Craving my once a month natural protein fix, I chose to visit St. Charles Tavern's $11.99 Thursday Steak W/Loaded Baked Potatoes Night. A friend and I went early because there Special is all day and we wanted to catch Happy Hour 2 for 1 wells. We were greeted by the Bartender/Server. immediately upon entering the Tavern. Yeah the place was practically empty. I started with A delish well margarita and my friend had a domestic beer and Boudin Balls, Which were delish. Next we had the Steak Special, The Ribeye was a total surprise for me because the "Port of Call" lack luster $35 steak doesn't even measure to this Steak by far. The Ribeye was tender , moist, & Grilled to perfection. Overall Great Experience, I will be back for sure
Loved the sass of our waitress. The $11.95 Ribeye Special on Wednesday/Thursday is so totally worth it! Can’t wait to try the Chicken Fried Steak!
I absolutely LOVED the boudin balls & crab cakes, dipping sauce was perfect fit. The gumbo was awesome , with a nice dark roux. Friendly bartender! Totally must go !
The food is amazing, I recommend the gumbo great late night eats.
Amazing food, amazing service, awesome experience. This is my first time in New Orleans and this place set the standard ridiculously high! Some of the best food I've ever eaten, definitely some of the friendliest folks around! You owe it to yourself to experience this place! Shout out to "J" our server all around awesome guy go and see these guys!!
My first night in Nola and we went here. I had a salad and gumbo. Trying to watch my weight. I had a great time and it was good food. Stop by. You won't regret it.
Cool atmosphere and great Amber beer. We didn't eat, but enjoyed it the place.
Best scrambled eggs I have ever had. From traveling to California to Florida that was the best place that I had ate at the entire trip.
Love this place. Been going here since the early 90's Always stop by when I'm in New Orleans. Red beans & rice is awesome and love their breakfast, especially the muffuletta omelet
Great little dive bar with friendly servers and good Sunday morning mamosas.
great food for a great price. friendly service. treated my taste buds to their seafood platter one night w/ their speacialty drink "street car" one night; and the soft shell crab po boy w/ a bloody mary the next. yumm-O!
Open all the time makes the Tavern a welcome beacon late night. The food is a fairly straightforward diner selection, with strong coffee and a full bar rounding out the spot. The food won't win any awards, but will fill you up for a fair price. Love the vintage toy crane in the corner!
I got a recommendation to try the St. Charles Tavern in New Orleans from someone who was staying in my hotel. Not having any dinner plans, I walked a couple blocks down the street and gave them a try. I had the Boudin Ball Po'boy. I tried boudin balls for the first time at Jacques-Imos Cafe a couple nights earlier... These boudin balls were different from the ones I had a Jacques-Imos Cafe. These had less of a batter around the meat inside and were a bit more uniform in their consistency. Different, but also good.
Yum!!!!. Hearty breakfast w/ prompt, great service!!! Wish Id had time for lunch as it looked amazing!
Nice price. Good blackened catfish and red beans. Rib Eye was OK, but not great.
We come here every time we come into town. We love it! Great cocktails, great food, comfortable servers...it's like hanging out with friends.
Breakfast was amazing! Not expecting the quality of food we got, very nice presentation too. I can imagine if they're busy it might not be the best service, but at 9 am it was great.
The food is overpriced but it is located on st Charles so I can understand why. Food is very fresh and always great. Friendly service.
For what it is, it's good. The 24/7 breakfast was nice and in decent portions - better than your chain Waffle House/Denny's alternative.

An update: still as good as before. Last night's dinner was an overstuffed shrimp po-boy, lightly dressed and served with well-prepared fries. I would have liked the baguette to be just a little crustier, but it was certainly good enough to pass. Even tried a piece of cheesecake on a whim (a constant whim, I admit, but a whim nonetheless) and it was as authentically New York as the sandwich (and the ambience) was New Orleans. Excellent service once again.
THE CURMUDGEON’S RATINGS (explained, sort of, on the Curmudgeon-About-Town blog):
FOOD: 4 chili peppers (out of 5)
SERVICE: 4 chili peppers
AMBIENCE: 3 1/2 chili peppers
VALUE: 3 chili peppers

Surprise!. We picked this place just because it was close; we had very low expectations of it. But first we were surprised by the interesting menu, with lots of traditional New Orleans dishes and several we wouldn't have expected to find in a borderline-sleazy tavern like this. At our table we had a Cobb salad, made large with fresh ingredients, though the bleu cheese dressing disappointed; a boudin po-boy, also large, with four big balls of deep-fried something that was vaguely like boudin (and was really tasty, whatever it was); a good meatball po-boy (again, four large meatballs & a good helping of mozzarella cheese); and a soft-shell crab po-boy that pleased the guy who ordered it. The drinks were well made -- that's what we really came for in the first place -- and the service was excellent. The prices were a little on the high side, but most surprising of all was the warmth of the ambience. We expected, as I said, borderline-sleazy, and found instead a long-standing neighbourhood tavern. I'm sorry now that I avoided this place when I lived Uptown. I'd recommend it to people who don't require a pretentious restaurant.
Been here many times for lunch. Food has good taste and the portions are large.
Late night only. I would probably not dine here during normal eating hours, but at 4AM it is great.
Great little Southern bistro. Very well priced.
For 2am i couldn't expect better. Went after a Saturday night out to Frenchman, on my home was feeling a little hungry so we stopped in. I had french toast: it was warm, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside plus it had a good flavor. Boyfriend had the mushroom burger and finished it all. The service was not quick, but I was ready to sit and relax. It serves its purpose of providing either a decent breakfast or dinner for the late night meal.
Okay folks. It's not galatoires but then it ain't McDonald either. It's get down grub and you can get breakfast 24/7. The roast beef po'boy is for eating but also you'll end up wearing it.
Great service, great food!!
This is by far the best restaurant I have been to in new orleans! The service is fantastic and the food is amazing! We have been everwhere from hole in the wall restaurants to emerils and this place beats them all!
Midnight fare. Surprisingly good food for 2 am; large portions, very friendly service, low prices, I didn't get a drink but their specials look quite good (once they get their liquor license).
Surprisingly decent bar food. Neighborhood diner. Open 24 hours. Someone described this as "eating in a Tom Waits song." Gritty, and not hip, dive. Décor is as standard as it gets: brown wall paneling and all. Sign over the big bar reads "Staff is trained to kill." Obviously, I did not expect much. I was very pleasantly surprised. The lunch buffet included marinated jumbo mushrooms, artichoke hearts in oil, fantastic dirty rice with large pieces of chicken, decent fried chicken, and a truly excellent pot roast - tender, moist, juicy with huge chunks of beef, whole baby carrots, giant celery, various whole potatoes. ONLY $8!!!! I stand by the B score. This day it deserved a B-plus actually. I have heard and read only mediocre to bad reviews about this place. But remember - its being graded as a dive. I wonder if it's just the buffet that is good. I need to go back. Waitstaff, BTW, was pleasant and cheerful. Two nice sized flatscreen TVs over the bar. 3/09.
Definitely several large steps above bar and diner food, St. Charles Tavern definitely puts out some delicious dishes available around the clock, 24/7. Blessed be. If you think IHOP is great at 4 in the morning after a night out, be ready to have a shuddering tastegasm when you have St. Charles Tavern at 4 in the morning!
I really like the place. Brought to kid in with me for a quick bite to eat and we weren't disappointed. I ordered the shrimp po boy, and my kid had the bacon cheese burger (which was bigger than her face!). The shrimp was seasoned just right, and my kid loved her burger. The lady that served was nice and personable, and so was the cook. It's a bar/ tavern, so I don't think I'd recommend bringing the family in after a certain time, but any time before 6 should be fine. We were in around 5 in a Saturday with no issues. It was surprisingly slow and quiet, but I was ok with that.
We just recently ran across the awesome restaurant .
The staff was very very nice. The food is awesome . They have a steak night special that can't be beat. Wed and Thur night 14 oz ribeye with bake potato for 11.95 I ordered two of them.
The shrimp poboys are awesome. You get great food at a great price. The crawfish pies are the bomb. I highly reccomend this establishment.
This place is a diamond in the rough. The food was AMAZING even at 1am. My husband got a breakfast plate with chicken and andoullie hash with eggs. We both had their DELICIOUS Gumbo and I had a Muffaletta sandwich which was uniquely different than most but in a Very good way.. My old fashioned was just how I like it as well. You will not regret eating and having a good drink there.
The gumbo was delish! The platter I had was also tasty! I was visiting from Virginia and this was my first time having gumbo! The bread was also nice, buttery, and crispy! My only pet peeve was the waiter, which I felt was condescending and a bit rude. Other than that, the food is yummy😋😋
Great Little spot for a home style meal.
Soft shell crab po-boy, roast beef w/fries, crawfish patties, seafood gumbo.
Awesome food for a late night bar. Don't miss the crab cakes, all crab, nothing else!!! The fried catfish is yum as well
Great food, especially for a dive! They're a bit understaffed, but the service is still good and being open every hour of the day certainly doesn't hurt.
Great bar for food and drink especially on a steak night which is Thursday, when you can get a $10 steak instead of $17. It was very tasty. Staff are friendly and it has a lively vibe and screens for those who need it!
First meal in Nawlins and didn't disappoint! Those deep fried bits and hot sauce had me
Ok ok ! The food was good ! Very Tavern feels!
My only complaint is how loud it was and the a/c obviously was not working great . It’s a bar atmosphere so that explains it all . Lots of locals!
Amazing food! It's topical breakfast foods cooked in interesting ways.
Best food for the price. One of the few places that wasn't a tourist trap around here.
Really liked the laid back friendly atmosphere and timely service. And, the marinara sauce on the meatballs and spaghetti was just the way I like it!
Great friendly service! Food was wonderful!!
Cozy 24hr place. Good food and staff.
Good food and very friendly wait staff, open 24h for late night cravings. All day breakfast.
Great food and excellent service!.. The Rum Punch was Greay as well!
Yes this is a local "Dive" bar. Very clean and very simple. Most times it is filled with locals, if you quiet however go early in the afternoon. We showed up and were the only ones (other than staff) there. That however quickly changed. One of the two cooks greeted us and was very nice and funny. The waitress was the only other person there and also was running the bar. She was patient and very nice, giving us good suggestions for drink specials and food, both which were excellent.
My Only reason for 4 stars it regarding a staff member that showed up a little later to hang out. I guess he thought he was funny and wanted to "shock" us by playing some hard rock on the jukebox. That didn't happen, he looked a little disappointed and our waitress looked like she wanted to kill him. lol
Oh, and probably the best shrimp Po-boy I have eaten in a long time.
The crab cakes were delicious as well.
