Had dinner here during COOLinary month. I ordered the white gazpacho, squash blossom and burrata pizza, and the pot de creme. The gazpacho wasn't bad, but it was odd; the bites with the grapes and/or almonds were pretty good, but the white base by itself was kinda meh. The pizza was good. I'd never had squash blossom before, and the burrata cheese was tasty. The pot de creme was amazing; like light, mildly coffee-flavored pudding.
I had no problems with the service. The parking was a bit chaotic during the prime dinner rush, but there's plenty enough around. Overall I'd recommend, especially for a chance to try the more unusual offerings.
I prefer the bar atmosphere here as a pose to the main dining area. The small bites are wonderful and entrees are equally tasty. I'm a huge fan of Asian inspired dishes, apparently so is Susan Spicer.
I usually don't care for happy hour... Cheap drinks, crap food. Against my better judgement I checked this happy hour out. I had a wonderful Moscow Mule (@full price) and settled for a warm Gorgonzola app....bleh! There was nothing good about this. Like I said, I hate happy hour- unfortunately the regular menu isn't available until 5:30. For you happy hour lovers- from 3-6, 1/2 off house special drinks, house wine, & tap beers. As for me, I'll only be back during regular dining times.

love the spot. family oriented but can also enjoy a cocktail or two. great menu that doesnt change unnecessarily. fig pizza a must and solid wait staff. look forward to susan's new spot areal sleeper for a great cheeseburger and very nice wood fired pizzas. cant miss on either
Fantastic food and for the price one of the best deals in town. No matter what the soup of the day is get it. Open fire pizza oven just adds to an already good atmosphere. Will be back as often as I can. I give it a 5 because that is as high as it goes.

Delicious food. I love that they are always changing the menu. This is one of the better restaurants in Lakeview. We usually get to go but have dined in a few times.
Lakeview girl here and have been going to Mondo for years. Love that Lakeview has upscale and classy. My visit last week was as good as ever. Pisco cocktail was great - the first time I've seen Pisco outside of trips to NYC which is nice. My table had the special pasta, peppers, pate, burger, pear and teleme pizza among other things. All were delicious. The special pasta was an appetizer size but I had it as my main and the richness of the dish allowed for that. The pizza was perfect and something I could eat again and again with no complaints. Will absolutely return.
Lamb. Fall off the bone delicious!
Adequate but not Stellar. This was a decent quality burger, and the flavor of the cheese and onions were very good. This is one of those cheffy burgers that leaves you feeling overwhelmed with fat; the meat might have been fine on its own, but there was a greasy feeling (butter?) on the top of the bun that it was too rich of an experience. The fries were fantastic though.
Great Casual Spot in Lakeview. If you feel like getting out of the city center for a fine meal in a casual atmosphere, I recommend this spot, which was recommended to me by a restaurateur friend. We arrived toward the end of their seating for a Monday night, but no one was anything less than hospitable. We began with devilled eggs (don't bother), ceviche (superb!) and gumbo (so-so), but we were very pleased when the stars of the evenings were our entrees: a hake fish-of-the-day with asparagus for my friend Pierre and a pork shoulder with black beans pour moi. Both were excellent. I loved the simplicity of the black beans with the rich, well-cooked, properly seasoned pork shoulder. The wines were acceptable. The waitress was perfect: very hospitable and handled all my pesky questions and requests with aplomb. We decided we had to try the house-made espresso and zinfandel ice cream (good but mostly just an experiment for us) and the limoncello and a California port that was very tasty (I found the limoncello slightly too sweet). We had a very nice evening when we didn't feel like dressing up for the downtown spots. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Ate a late lunch so restaurant was not crowded and mood was very relaxed. There was not a single thing on the menu that didn't look like a yummy adventure but I finally settled on a Cuban sandwich with a watermelon soup. It was as good as I hoped it would be. My wife had fish tacos which were served with an apple/carrot/onion/cilantro salad which were spectacular. My son had a pizza fired in their brick oven which definitely hit the spot. Overall it was a great experience.
Always a Treat. Being from Lafayette, I don't get to come here often enough. I have a brother who lives in Lakeview and introduced me to Mondo. This visit was for lunch, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I started with an appetizer special- salmon beignets. I thought they were yummy and smokey. My dining companion hated them, but he did enjoy his beet salad. I don't eat beets, so I can't comment. I had the fried shrimp bahn mi as my main. Delicious! Perfect shrimp, perfect baguette, loved the Srirachi mayo. My friend had the BLT to which he added oysters. He said the bacon was too much & overpowered the oysters, but he loved the bread. I'll definitely be back again & again. I love this place!
Tasty. Great experience. Mussels were excellent, Burger, Lamb. Good service. All around enjoyable experience.
The place rocks. Wish I could eat there every day. I've been through most of the menu. The specials are always are great. Glad it's in da hood.
Great ceviche!. This was my first time at Mondo and it was fantastic. The atmosphere was comfortable and elegant. The menu had many interesting offerings and there were also many specials that I would have liked to have tried, everything sounded so good. The white sangria did not disappoint. I LOVED the ceviche, so fresh and light with tons of flavor. I was able to add shrimp to the curried cauliflower with naan entree which was delicious. Will be back for sure.
Just had dinner. The pork shoulder was delicious and perfectly cooked. My husband's steak frites came with hand cut fries. He would have liked more sauce but he enjoyed the dish. We were too full for dessert. Great value for the price.
Delish!. Went here for dinner and I really enjoyed the pork shoulder with plantains and black beans. The piece of pork was generous so it would be a good dish to get if you go there with someone who likes to share different things. However the highlight was the dessert - sticky toffee pudding! Words can't describe how perfect this dessert was. The white sangria was not special, it just tasted like pineapple juice. I'll try it again next time, maybe it was that particular batch. The presentation of everything was great. I would highly recommend Mondo and can't wait to go for lunch.

Loved it!. My wife and I went for brunch, and it immediately became one of my favorite spots in the New Orleans area. We had the Thai shrimp and pork meatballs, silver dollar sweet potato pancakes with caramelized banana butter, fried chicken livers with poached egg and onion jam, fresh fruit plate with honey yogurt and homemade granola (which was amazing), and the grilled pimento cheese and andouille sandwich with crab boil potato chips. Everything was great, and I washed it down with an excellent Regatta ginger beer. I'll definitely be returning!
Can't get enough. Every time I meet anyone for lunch, I convince them to go here. Every person has loved it! Pizza's are great, muscles are spot on, and love anything done with the buckwheat noodles. If they have the watermelon basil sorbet, it is a must.
Chef Spicer does it again!. Chef Susan Spicer has a talent for great food and amazing restaurants. I've been there many a times and have loved it every time. The menu is beautifully eclectic ranging from wood fired oven pizzas, Kobe beef with Bearnaise sauce to classics like ceviche and steak tartare. As a chef I also happen to be a fan of the drink menu and trust me they have some of the best house made cocktails I've ever had! (try the house made white sangria!!) Yes it can be pretty noisy in the dinning room when its full and sometimes the food can take some time but that's what a classic New Orleans neighborhood restaurant is all about! (plus have you seen how small their kitchen is??) And the fact that they make almost EVERYTHING in house and use as much local and organic products as they can is a big hit on my charts. Overall even with some minor faults I still love this restaurant.
Eat at the bar. I've eaten here several times and have to say, I don't get the criticism. Table service was quite good on my initial visit soon after the restaurant opened. Since then I've eaten at the bar several times and things couldn't have been bettter. A good crowd, excellent food and a very friendly vibe. What's the problem?
Food is pretty good, service abysmal... but seems to have improved substantially since opening. Critics seem to miss the idea of the place is to be really casual but with better food. Noisy, sure, but you are in NOLA baby!
Very good and kid-friendly to boot!. We (seven of us including two small children) had dinner here for the first time this evening. We all loved the bread (they pass it out in small slices and we kept stalking the guy for more). My dad and I both had pizzas and we enjoyed them a lot, especially the crust. I asked the waiter and he said that Susan Spicer's bakery, Wild Flour Breads, supplies the bread for the restaurant. I have seen this bread for sale at Langenstein's; now I will be buying some! My husband had a pork shoulder dish with black beans and plaintains and he liked it a lot. My sister ordered a steak dish with fries and she liked it although she said the portion was quite small. My mom got the redfish and she also enjoyed it very much. The kids were happy too and the place was noisy enough (in a good way) that we didn't have to worry about them being disruptive. One thing that particularly impressed me was that, although there were LOTS of people waiting for a table, the restaurant itself is not crammed full of tables. A couple more tables could have been squished in but that would have made things even louder and it would have made for a less comfortable dining experience. I appreciated having a comfortable distance between the tables....We'll be back!
Bread baffled. I love Mondo. It is a great addition to Lakeview. The food is delicious and I like the modern atmosphere. I have to ask though, what is the deal with the bread? The first time I went, the people walking around with bread avoided all eye contact and would never give us any. The second time, we had to ask but finally did get one piece. The last time, we ordered an appetizer that actually came with bread to spread the cheese on. It only came with four small pieces, not enough for the content of the app. When we asked for a few more pieces, the bread person acted like we just asked for ketchup to put on our steak. I am confused about the bread thing. I will keep going to Mondo and loving it and trying to figure out the bread situation.
Awesome place!. I have to admit, I was a little nervous about dinner after reading some of these reviews. We went with a group of about 10 of us for a birthday. As we waited for our friends to arrive, we sat and had a drink at the bar. The manager greeted us right away and asked if we were first timers. He introduced himself, shook our hands and proceeded to tell us a little bit about the menu. The bartender was slightly witty and very polite. We were seated promptly as soon as our party arrived. We are all naturally loud anyway so we LOVED that it was loud in there! It made for a much more comfortable atmosphere, to be honest. We ordered about 12 different apps and snacks and everything came out timely and delicious! Our waiter, Marcus was awesome. He was extremely fun and helpful. I also thought the portions were very decent for the entrees. The food was wonderful, aside from a couple dishes being slightly undercooked, but the flavor was out of this world! We will definitely be back hopefully sooner than later! Thank you, Mondo for an all around excellent dining experience!
I just got back from mondo which i delious very nice service ot fills u up very good roasted chicken very loud though medium temperature i would of liked it colder but overall i recomend it for everyone
Great addition to Lakeview - superb burger. Started with the thai shrimp/pork meatballs. The other Lakeview reviewer who said the appetizers were too small must not go out to eat a lot besides Applebee's & TGIFridays... Would you prefer a plate of Irish Nachos? There were three (2-bite size) meatballs with cucumbers - the appropriate size for an appetizer. The cheeseburger is delicious; ordered it medium with cheddar. The pickles are made in-house. Tried the jicama-apple salad in place of the fries since my sweetie got the fries. Jicama had a hint of cumin that was nice. Food was presented about 15 mins. after ordering, which was great since there was a large holiday party going on in the main dining room. We ate at the bar and the bartender was very cool, quite friendly - not over-bearing and not at all snobby. Another nice feature is the beer selection. Nola Brewery's 7th street wheat = yum. Hope this isn't seasonal.
Went to Mondo for my birthday. Had heard about the crowds so we went early. We walked right in. It was delicious. Everything we had was yummy. There was a special salad with beets, blue cheese and apple and pear. The appetizer we ate was also a special. It was fried oysters over an artichoke bread pudding. The oysters were amazing. The artichoke was good but not outstanding. I had the lamb chops. They were out of this world. I loved the mint jelly sauce. For dessert we split a lemon tart. The meal made a great birthday celebration. The portions however are small, so if you are hungry an entree will probably not be enough for dinner. Service was excellent.
Katie G. Service was EXCEPTIONAL!!! We live near by and are so happy to have this restaurant in the neighborhood. We ordered the thai shrimp/pork meatballs and civeche appetizers then had the gulf fish (red fish), and the blue cheese burger. Lastly we had the beignets for dessert. The burger was nothing less than amazing, and the fish was delicious. I will be back and can't wait to bring in friends and family. Thank you Chef Spicer for helping in bringing back our beloved Lakeview :)
Pretty good, but..... You will leave hungry. I enjoyed the Ceviche appetizer and the main entree was the Sauteed Gulf Fish (Flounder) with Almondine sauce. For dessert, I ordered the sweet potato pecan pie. The service was exceptional! With 2 beers & gratuity, the bill was $55 for one person. Being in the Lakeview area I would not expect French Quarter prices. The portions did not justify the price. Decor is modern with an outdoor patio.
Delicious!. You did it again Susan Spicer!
Food-amazing
Ambience-great
Bar-fantastic
Service-friendly and professional
Unworldly loud. This place was bustling and I waited roughly thirty minutes for a booth. Nice contemporary setting but it was really noisy. Not off to a good start as the water runner looked unhappy and the server, though courteous. disappeared after presenting the menu. The Negroni was bitter and very strong. I like the deviled egg trio, especially the one with curry and fried scallions. The eggplant is fried fluffiness and the gorgonzola on toast came with an unexpected sweetness. The buckwheat noodles were underseasoned but thoroughly enjoyed the cheviche guacamole. Onward to desserts! The sweet potato pecan pie was not sweet enough. Love the beignets with yogurt though, fluffy just like the eggplant. Some of the dishes came with brown paper underneath as if they were placemats.

Nice. Great neighborhood hangout!! Always, packed with people.. Good food too
It's one of the finest rest in NO service is great& so is the fopd
Pretty good.. I can see some of the other complaints here having merit. The food was small (that did not so much bother me because I think restaurant's portions are out of control these days. But, I know many people would disagree with me and enjoy larger portions). It was also a little warm in there.
However, I thought the two things I ate were really quite good. We orderd the steak tar tar for the table and I thought it was amazing! Some of the better tar tar I've had in the city. I also had the tripple tail served "muddy waters" style with smothered greens. It was great. The wine selection was also fairly decent, though I would prefer if they offered more than 2 wines by the glass.
Great food--but I'm still hungry. Food was excellent, service was excellent but after 2 appetizers (shared between 2 people) and my entree I was still very hungry. I even had dessert and I am still hungry. Maybe the food was sooo good my belly wanted more--all I know is I am still hungry. I am 5'2" and 120 llbs after 3 courses and a combined bill for 2 @ $100 I should NOT be hungry!
Cons: expensive, but it's a high quality place.
Neutral: small bathrooms.
Pro:
the waiter Kevin, he knows his beer and the menu well. A personable and friendly waiter, with some great dreadlocks. (Pictured)
Pictured: Potato leek soup with pork shoulder. Utterly fabulous, rich and creamy with a great flavor, and a fabulous starter.
Pork shoulder on black beans. Spicy, smoky, and utterly delicious. The pork was slightly dry, but hardly a problem with the beans and the sauces. This was a fabulous dish.
And desert: the "Persian Love cake" rich, well flavored, and marveously carmelized. Everything about this dish worked, and it was truly fabulous. The mint harnish on top made a great palate cleaner but didn't do much aromatically since the figs and pistachios took the forefront on that.
Eat here but be prepared to spend.
Dietary note: call ahead for gluten free, they can accommodate, but it is easier with notice.
Amazing! I rarely review, but just had to this time. As I sit here enjoying the braised beef short rib I'm hard pressed to think of anything I've ever eaten that tastes better. EVER! Just wow. You have to try it!
Amazing Good!!! First time here and enjoyed every minute of it!!! Fish Tacos and Brisket were to die for!!! Great prices, great atmosphere!! Will definitely be back!!!
I love a good pork shoulder and this one was fantastic. The meatball appetizer was delicious as well.
Love Mondo alone with my wife or the family. Our daughters take over the pizza bar with grand enthusiasm. Every Chef working the oven has been wonderful to the girls and created some great experiences for them. The menu is great and relaxed, the hanger steak is always good and you can never go wrong with the fish.
The food is consistently good. They have a large Woodfire Pizza Oven. It's a nice Hideaway that is surprisingly large.
Lost a star due to the dinner being slow. We were seated right at 5:30 with no others in the dining room until after our order was taken. Even then there was only one other table of four. Appetizers came out quick but the wait for the entrees was too long. Thankfully, the food was good.
I've been to Mondo several times. I've never had a bad meal there. One of our guests tonight was a vegan and the chef put together a wonderful vegetable plate for her. I had the ceviche and the burger and both were excellent!
Hands down.. one of the best places I've eaten in Louisiana. It was super busy, but Our server was a sweetheart and was very patient when I couldn't make up my mind. First off... ORDER THE PIZZA. We chose that as an appetizer and I was so mad I wasnt able to eat it all! Next... the burger. It was seasoned well. Cooked well. Best burger I've had. A must try place!
We've always had good experiences at Mondo and tonight was no different. Our server, Kyle, was kind, professional and attentive. We ordered the bouillabaisse, which was perfectly fresh and flavorful, and a couple of wood fired pizzas. LOVE that the kids get to make their own pizza. Mondo is a local favorite for good reason.
