This Texas girl Loves it. I love love love the hot sausage po boy and they made me like roast beef. Try the roast beef or the Hot Sausage po-boy! You won't be disappointed and you will get really full. So what if you catch someone with a bad attitude, most places are packed with attitude. I'm just saying I will take the 'tude to get the food. :)
AMAZING !. Most of the reviews on this place are luke warm at best...WHY???? This place is CLEANER than most of the spots we hit in NOLA......Fresh paint, clean floors, etc......Dive in a Bad Hood???? What????? No problems here..This is NOT in a "bad hood" just old school which is refreshing in this age of gentrification...This place was SUBLIME...Hot Sausage Po Boy was fresh , warm and tender...roast beef was tender and flavorful ! Friendly folk inside.......Sometimes if you have a preconcieved notion about a place and you keep your guard up, you'll get a poor response in return.......I'm not a local but felt at home in this place !

Stick with the hot sausage po boys. I am a New Orleans native and have been frequenting Gene's for many moons. I see alot of people on here giving Gene's flack. 1st off, YES, it is definetly a dive in a sketchy part of town and NO the workers are not particulary cheery. However, they are open 24 hours, (very few places in New Orleans are). At this place the hot sausage po boy is the star of the show, the french bread is crusty on the outside with just the right amount of chewiness, the patties are spicy but not too spicy, if you ask for it dressed you will get mayo, lettuce and pickles, they do not serve tomatoes and never did from what I remember. I hear the hamburger po boys are good too. Don't waste your time with that other stuff on the menu such as the Philly cheesesteak, you WILL be disappointed. I have heard that they have decent breakfast, can't say for certain b/c I have never had it. Also, CASH ONLY.
Pros: Open 24 hrs, good hot sausage po boys. Cons: Bad area, WWA (Workers With Attitudes).
Hubby had 1/2 burger 1/2 sausage w/ chz grilled onions! Loved it!!! But be forewarned: if trying to lose weight or stay away from greasy foods, skip Genes! This dive is great for "cheat" days! Greasy but good!!
Hot sausage Po-boy...enough said. My wife and I absolutely 100% love the hot sausage patty po boys from Gene's. By far one of the best po boys NOLA has to offer. The neighborhood isn't the best, but honestly who cares...in the end it's all about the food. Needless to say Gene's hot sausage patty po boy with cheese, lettuce, pickles, and a drop of mayo will have you rushing to chew and swallow your current bite so you can get another one in. It's spicy, but not to spicy...the amount of flavor the patty's put out is outrageous! If your ever in the French Quarter and want a awesome po-boy go to Gene's...just make sure your CASH is in hand and your ready to order as soon as you walk in the door, because they don't play around.
Hot Ssssssausage!. The best thing on the menu is the Hot Sausage w/cheese, dressed, add a lil grilled onion too! It's gonna hurt later though, really hurt! Always hits the spot
Had the sausage po-boy as recommended. Slightly spicy and hit the spot. As a tourist from ca, I've got to say the quality isn't surprising for a cheap, semi-fastfood place. If you remember this, you'll get what you expect.
Same ole Same ole.... This place has been around forever, I'm not a fan of the location (corner of St.Claud & Elysian Fields on the outskirts of the French Quarter- By-water area, ABSOLUTELY in the HOOD :) or the decor (hot mess #1) or the staff (hotter mess #2), but I am a fan of the Half burger & Half hot sausage poboy, it is really good and no other restaurant in the city will serve this combination for you. I'm so sorry you didn't order one of those Ray, It's the only thing I would ever order here (cheese burger or hot sausage)! The other 6 or so poboys on the menu are not even worth the effort. The Breakfast poboys are pretty good as well. I also think them being open 24 hrs. helps there business. Next time Ray (if your willing to give them a chance LOL!) try one of those...
Poboy is a famous local New Orleans food. We are attracted here since this store get the number 1 rating for poboys. The restaurant environment was sketchy. I cannot believe this is so called number 1 poboy restaurant. But tasty is tasty, we ordered chicken, catfish and shirmp poboys. They are all delicious. I will recomment chicken poboy. To me, the poboy here are a little bit pricy.
The best late night dive and so incredibly delicious. That NewOrleans flavor. And with the addition of the street car everyone will be chasing this small window of Nola Soul
Literally best poboy I've EVER had. This place is like what defined a poboy. It's luke 1920 when Budweiser revolutionized the beer industry, this place set the standard for what a poboy is. I've never really liked poboys that much, but after this, omg, amazing!! Will be back!!

We saw Gene's poboys on tv, had to try it, it exceeded our expectations, the shrimp poboy is a must have, loaded with shrimp, hot, and freshly made, and the roast beef philly didn't disappoint.
Went here to grab a daiquiri for lunch and the prices for the size of the cup was fair. I would recommend this daiquiri shop to any one here in town!

We anticipated visiting Gene's for a few years and finally got our visit. We were not disappointed! We ordered a Shrimp Po Boy, Hot Sausage Sandwich, Cheeseburger and a Philly Sandwich, small fry which were enough for 3 of us and a couple of drinks. While we were not crazy about the Philly, it was still good. However, all the other foods were absolutely as delicious as we hoped. Can't wait to visit again!

Never had a Po Boy until yesterday and man this place delivers. Great air conditioning in a small restaurant on a hot day. But the food was done right great!! Shrimp Po Boy was hot, and tasty. Recommended!!
Another great place. About a mile from where I live. No matter what time of day or night the food is always good. My only complaint is with tables and chairs not present all the time. I like to sit inside and eat. The place is clean and the staff is very friendly. All the makings of a 5 star place. I hope the owners will decide to decorate the restaurant to reflect how they are better and different than the po' boy shops down the street.
Found this great dump by accident! I was disappointed (at first) that the roast beef poboy was sliced and not debris; HOW WRONG I WAS!!! DELICIOUS!!! Amazing bread, terrific gravy and perfect texture between the beef, "dressing" and cheese. Cool staff as well.
Been there twice and will be back on my next NOLA trip.
I had the bayou burger and it was excellent. You will have locals and tourists stopping by, cut-off jeans and three piece suits. Based on past reviews, some people may have been offended by the clientele. If you don't mind mixing with everyday folk, and want a unique experience take a chance.

I had the hot sausage with cheese po-boy and it was life! The bread had a slightly crunchy thin top, and was so super warm and soft inside. The hot sausage was the absolute best! Very good quality and the portions were huge!
