One of the best Creole food I have ever had. Crawfish etouffe’, gumbo and jambalaya were just incredible. We had take out so I cannot rate the service at the table. However my order was prepared really fast.
We were with a student group, and were given $15 to eat wherever we wanted. I got the chicken gumbo, which they claim was voted the best in the city by locals, and it was incredible! The wait staff were really good. Most of us were able to eat well under the $15. I highly recommend this restaurant!

The food was top notch. Remember in the movie Ratatouille when Ego, the food critic took his first bite of his life changing meal? Yes, my first bite of dinner at the Gumbo Shop had the same effect on me. It took me back to joyful memories.

This place was recommended to us and we couldn’t have been happier. There was a line out the door which we only waited in about 10-15 minutes. We sat in a nice spot outside. We got the gator sausage and BBQ shrimp for appetizers. Both were delicious but the gator sausage was absolutely amazing. Our entrees we both got the creole sampler with the crawfish etoufee and it ALL was amazing. We may stop in again before we leave town!

We went for gumbo and sides during our holiday last week. Beautiful dishes, excellent service, very reasonable prices, very picturesque location and brilliant atmosphere. We'll visit again next time we're in New Orleans - best gumbo in town for a reason :)
I absolutely LOVE this place. I highly recommend... the gumbo. I always get what I call “The Trifecta” seafood, chicken & sausage, & spicy turkey! Add the garlic hot sauce to top it off!
This is supposed to be voted best gumbo in New Orleans. I like the ambiance here over other restaurants in the area by far. Less heavy dark wood chairs and low lighting typical of the French Quarter, but a bright, wide and airy European Cafe feel. Great service, great crawfish roumelade.
One of the must visit Cajun / Creole restaurants in French Quarter. always crowded during day and night. Chicken Jambalaya was good. Gumbo and Shrimp Creole are OK but taste a little too fishy - perfect if you like it that way. I tried them all by ordering only side dishes. Must pour a little hot sauce over all of them for better taste.
Authentic Creole & Cajun in the French Qtr. Great setting in a historical building. Tim was very attentive and amazing as our server. Complimentary French bread served. Eater beware: the Po Boys are huge! I had the jambalaya and was slightly disappointed on the serving size and lack of spice (easily patched up by the sauces and spices at the table). Not easy to get to by car...plan to park and walk. Only “beef” was the line to the 2 small bathrooms is nearly always present.
I've already had gumbo at least twice in New Orleans so far, but I stilled wanted to check out The Gumbo Shop. New Orleans is a Mecca of culinary temptations and as a native I wouldn't want it any other way. Temptation and atonement are part of our culture. With religious roots that are primarily Catholic, thanks to our French founders, the church affects our calendar in a rather unique way: we celebrate Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, the final day of feasting before 40 days of Lent. The traditional abstinence from meat during this time leading up to Easter means that we have to "sacrifice" by enjoying the bounty from nearby waters: fish, shrimp and oysters from the Gulf of Mexico, crabs from Lake Pontchatrain, and crawfish from area swamplands.
Hadn’t tried any gumbo before but I found it very interesting, enjoyed the seafood taste and the little pieces of crab that came with it. The consistency was gluggy like but nonetheless was quite nice and full of flavour.
Next I tried the hot roast beef Po boy and wowee I really enjoyed that! Tender hot roast beef with hot gravy in a warm,soft buttery bread.
All in all I’m glad I finally tried New Orleans infamous Gumbo and Po Boy
Great place. Always packed. It was nice to have a vegetarian option for my Indian friend. He said he has the same dish (black beans and rice) back home. Prices are great.

They have vegetarian, cajun and a lot more varieties of Gumbo. They taste delicious. Try the small plates and pick your best one for your big meal.
The restaurant is very southern in it's ambiance and the service is nice and quick. And request for a vegetarian menu and they have some really interesting menu for vegetarians.
On our vacation to New Orleans we visited this place in the French quarter. It is a very small place with very good food. My wife had a roast beef po-boy sandwich with garlic mashed potatoes. She said it was pretty good. I had the sausage gumbo and the jambalaya. The jambalaya was pretty good. The gumbo, on the other hand, was another story. It was not good, it was fantastic! On a 1 to 5 scale I would rate it a 13. It was so flavorful I did not even add any hot sauce to it. My wife was in shock that I did not add any hot sauce like I always do. There is a reason they call this place The Gumbo Shope, they nailed the name. If you get a chance to come here, definately try the Gumbo. Very reasonable prices, very good service and out of this world gumbo. Honestly, give this place a try.

Service was great , I had the fish in the hollandaise sauce and creamed spinach !! Yummmmm , very rich but that's what's expected I guess. He had the steak and it was cooked to perfection, as was the fish . Worth a visit . Loads of staff
Quite the find... great creole dishes. The crawfish remoulade salad is an excellent way to start the meal. The wait staff is friendly and efficient, and always willing to explain and answer questions. The Gumbo is by far the best we have had in town. The combination platter covers all the basics and will leave you wanting to come back. They were packed and had a line out to the street both times we went. They seem to have a 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 seatings (roughly). They don’t take reservations so come prepared for a wait, which is more than worth it!
Expect a line up on the weekends. We waited about 15 minutes Saturday night. Our server was helpful and explained to us the specials and questions we had about the menu. One of the specials was linguine with shrimp. Did not really like the taste of it... was expecting more of a tomato base than what we got. The jambalaya came with shrimp, sausage, chicken and crab and was delicious. Wasn’t spicy but they give you different hot sauces on the table.
Absolutely loved it. Great atmosphere on patio and the blackened catfish with crab cake and cream shrimp sauce was amazing! Glad we came early because there was a big line when we left.

What looked like a long queue to get a table moved quite quickly. The staff are very friendly and we were seated at a table in a mini courtyard. The look is rustic and cosy and has a lovely charm to it.

Really enjoyed the crab cake, red beans and rice with sausage was delicious. There was a line but it probably took us about 25-30 minutes to get in but it was a Monday evening. The creole combination was excellent especially the jambalaya. Would definitely recommend this place.
The food were great we got the crab cake which is not on the menu it is filled with crab topped with shrimp and white sauce and creole shrimp it was delicious and flavored . This is the only place beside acme I love to dine in
The decor and atmosphere were great. We sat in the mini-courtyard outside which was adorable. The servers were so nice, and gave us a seat under the large umbrella for the better considering it started raining during our meal (but we and our stuff remained dry)!
The coffee is delicious, if you trust the waiters, it comes with a special sauce that is made of rainbows and unicorn tears.
They gave great suggestions on what to eat as well. The crab cakes are absolutely delicious! And so were the alligator sausage!

Great little place and extremely popular. When we got there the line was down the street and was still just as long when we left. We had the sampler and jambalaya. Everything was very good and well worth the wait. Staff was very nice and helpful. We also had the crab cake which isn't on the menu but is very good and should be on the menu. My only complaint was no sweet tea. Lol
Appetizers are great here.They make a fantastic crab cake ( which strangely isn't on the menu and you have to request ) and the boudin was also great. We tried the sampler which had small servings of jambalaya , shrimp creole and crawfish etouffe which were all , to my dismay, very bland and needed serious spicing! Try their bloody Mary and daiquiri, although they have a good wine collection too.

We tried both the chicken andouille gumbo and the seafood gumbo. I loved the former, my husband liked the latter. Both were delicious and they didn't skimp on ingredients!
The crawfish etouffée was pretty good. First time I have tried this dish, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but once again, the seafood was generous and it was well seasoned.
Both our desserts - chocolate brownie pie and bread pudding with whiskey sauce were amazing. The chocolate one is dense, rich and perfectly paired with vanilla ice cream. The whiskey sauce is strong and a perfect complement to the cinnamonny, apple-raisin goodness of the bread pudding.
We sat by a New Orleans local who has been a regular here for years and I understand why now, after the great experience we had.

One of the best gumbos in the city of gumbo. Atmosphere is classic NOLA, margaritas are to die for..esp with the right bartender, ask for extra fresh lime instead of mix. We get them to go, thats how good they are. The bread is awesome, you will ask for more...ask early and ask for more butter, you'll need it because you will want to swab up the juices of you're gumbo. Aligator sausage is great when they serve it. Service can be slow, but its a popular place.

Small, crowded, and loud. The food was good yet not outstanding. I was looking for the best gumbo in New Orleans and while this was good, it just didn't have the depth of flavor I look for in gumbo. It wasn't bad by any stretch but it wasn't as good as I had let the hype lead me to believe that it would be. I want to visit again and see if my first impressions were faulty.
This was my first time ever trying Gumbo and it was amazing! My husband and I stopped in for lunch in their beautiful mini courtyard. We both had the seafood and okra gumbo which was absolutely delicious! We also tried the boudin and the shrimp salad which were both very good. The staff are very friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back!

The Gumbo Shop, down an alley & just behind St. Louis Cathedral, is apparently regarded as a paragon of its titular dish to tourists, foodies, & natives alike. I stopped in b/t meals for a sample of their seafood specialty, & was very pleased w/ the service, the watermelon daiquiri, @rrthe perfect French bread , & the main attraction. It was rich & hearty, but the only outstanding feature was the pair of teeny crab claws sticking up from the milieu, as if inviting you in to the dark abyss. Well, just a small bowl really. And if you can procure enough meat to taste the crab from one of these Darwinian weapons w/o drawing your own blood, then a master crabber you must be. One big strike against the Gumbo Shop, for me, was the prevalence of flies in the dining area. There are several dining rooms indoors, but as w/ many older buildings in the Quarter, serving any purpose, there's an open central courtyard. All doors are left open, so in the summer, mid-afternoon heat w/ garbage piled up in every alley, all are lucky they're not much worse. I would return to TGS for the gumbo, but likely only after dark.
Stopped in here 2 days in a row for lunch on my last trip to New Orleans, and ordered the same dish both times. Their Shrimp Creole was so delicious that I just had to go back for more.
The Gumbo Shop has been one of my favorite restaurants in the Quarter thus far. Their gumbos are outstanding, the shrimp creole is one of the best I've ever had, and their desserts are fantastic as well.
Service was ridiculously polite and quick.

The Gumbo Shop was a great place to stumble upon in the French Quarter before hearing Preservation Hall Brass Band change my whole perspective on the world (you must go). I really could not believe go delicious the crawfish étouffée tasted. I thought the Jambalaya would win my heart, but no. Not a chance. Get the étouffée!!

The Gumbo Shop is always busy but somehow I've never had to wait for a table.
Service was fast and efficient. We started out with a crab cake with creamy shrimp topping, which was really good.
It's my birthday so I treated myself to the complete creole dinner: shrimp okra gumbo, crawfish étouffée, creole creamed spinach, and a praline sundae. I was especially partial to the warm, crusty, soft French bread that comes out with dinner. My wife had blackened chicken, garlic mashed potatoes and creole creamed spinach. We weren't impressed with the spinach but everything else was really good. We filled up on the bread before dinner so we ended up taking quite a bit of it home with us (perfect late night snack haha).
The bathroom had no toilet paper when I visited but I let the hostess know and she took care of it right away. I'd definitely love to visit again!
Wow, this is a great place! The food was wonderful and the service was even better. Our waiter, Micheal P. was spot on with his recommendations. Crab cakes- Banana daiquiris- alligator sausage... Several in our party ordered the special (Catfish St. Peter), and they loved it. The Crawfish and pasta in Tasso Cream sauce was everyones favorite. The shrimp creole was a close second. I would definitely go here again. No complaints at all!!!
I tried as many of the popular restaurants as I could during my stay here in the French Quarter. The Gumbo Shop ended up being my all-time favorite stop. They serve a traditional Creole menu and are located in the heart of the French Quarter. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and have a online shop that you can order many of their food items from. The Gumbo here is amazing. I can see why it wins many awards. But my absolute favorite was the Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage. I just couldn't get enough of it. It was so flavorful and it ended up being my favorite dish I ordered all week. I had pretty good service too. I plan on ordering their cookbook so I can try and reproduce some of these yummy dishes myself at home.

Authentic cajun food that is vegetarian friendly!. My husband and I popped in for dinner during Mardi Gras, and the place was very busy. However, that didn't stop Patty, our waitress, from taking the time to give some fabulous recommendations on dishes. My husband had the creole/cajun sampler platter, and I had the vegan gumbo and a vegan po' boy: both delicious. The food is not spicy, but it is flavorful, and there are many options for vegetarians. I originally ordered the vegetarian plate of the day, a beans and rice dish, but I soon learned that they had an additional pasta and po' boy option available for vegetarians, and since the latter is so hard to find, I had to go for it. The vegetarian po' boy is massive and filled with sliced/grilled zucchini, red pepper, and onion. I also had a bite of the husband's dessert- bread pudding with whiskey sauce: simply yummy. A final word: this is a tightly seated restaurant, so if you are claustrophobic, try to stop in during an off time period, but rest assured: there is a full bar to relax you as well. Margaritas were a big hit! We'll be recommending to everyone we know who visits the Big Easy.
I just went to New Orleans for the first time during this past week. My favorite meal I had during my stay was at the Gumbo Shop. I had the Crawfish Pasta with creamy Tasso sauce. It was wonderful. The food was decently priced and delicious. The servers were not the greatest and they all seemed like they were not enjoying their jobs, but it was during Mardi Gras... So it's understandable. I would definitely visit again.
Great Red Beans and Rice. The staff are great, and if you are looking for the real deal when it comes to New Orleans cuisine, this is it. Sit in the outside courtyard if you can, the ambience is great.
Excellent Dining. I had the Okra Seafood Gumbo Appetizer, Combination Creole Platter with Creole Shrimp, Jambalaya, and Crawfish Etouffee with cream spinach and Chocolate Brownie. Each course was delicious, my least favorite was Shrimp Creole but that may be because I dont like red gravy/roux sauce. I highly recommend the Jambalaya if you aren't willing to try crawfish. The prices were very reasonable compared to other casual dining restaurants in the area. Excellent service and courtyard dining, well worth the price.
Great lunch and the place lived up to the hype. Our server was very polite and attentive. The seafood and okra gumbo was delicious, though my wife's BBQ shrimp and pasta dish (which is like a creole scampi) was on a whole different level. We really enjoyed the alligator sausage appetizer as well. Bought some of their creole seasoning to bring back with us to the southwest.

Good Enough to Travel from DFW just for the Gumbo. Best Gumbo at the best prices in town. Small and quaint but reasonably good service. Tight quarters as they have maximized the number of tables. Really apparent this trip because it was raining and their courtyard was closed. Got the Chicken and Andouis Sausage Gumbo adding the appropriate amount of the house Garlic Hot Sauce and didn't leave a speck in the bowl. I also had the Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage and it was phenominal with nearly a pound of the perfectly spiced and smoked sausage along with well cooked and silky smooth beans and well cooked rice equals ambrosia. I asked how much the Garlic Hot Sauce was and the manager had the waiter give me the sauce to take home for free. This has been and always will be our first stop whenever we are within 300 miles of NOLA. Best value in the French Quarter.
Great First Experience with Creole Cuisine. I love these passageways that open to beautiful courtyards and even better when its a good restaurant. Our friends brought us here to try traditional creole cooking and it was wonderful. My husband began his meal with seafood okra gumbo followed by a crawfish pasta. The gumbo was large and the warm break that accompanied it was quick devoured. The pasta sauce was rich and contained lots of crayfish. I tried the special - blackened catfish stuffed with crab meat and covered in shrimp sauce (how could anyone pass on that option?) with collard greens on the side. It was delicious! The fish would wonderfully cooked, the crab stuffing was generous and the shrimp sauce was just enough to accent the meal. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and my husband his. I would definitely recommend this place and return for another meal.
Great Lunch. The shrimp po boy was different but excellent. The jambalaya was excellent also. The blackened chicken salad came with a pecan vinagrette which was wonderful. The place could of used some music. Overall would go back.
Good feed, but smaller portions. The gumbo shop was a very nice place to eat. But every plate except for the pecan brownie dessert (which was utterly exceptional) was a bit on the meager side for my personal gastronomic propensity. Even the cocktails were a little on the small side. The food itself was delicious and the service was great. They also cater well for vegetarians which was very much appreciated. Just note though that if you're really hungry and used to US portion sizes you might have to spend a little more to fill up than you bargained for.

New Orleans Classic. This past week I was in New Orleans for a conference. After trying a few different restaurants throughout the week, I have been convinced that New Orleans is my new favorite “restaurant city” or “favorite city to go to restaurants.” There are a few staples in the New Orleans diet, but each restaurant is unique in its own right. There is spicy food, seafood, creole food, and french food, but if I had to sum up New Orleans cuisine in one word it would be flavorful.
The first night I was in New Orleans our group went to the Gumbo Shop. The Gumbo Shop is located in the French Quarter and is well known for its creole food. We stopped in on a Monday night and the place was happenin. Our group of eleven was seated in a back room that had an older New Orleans vibe to it. You could feel the energy in the restaurant and made for a pleasant first evening in the city.
Trying to decide on a dish was a difficult task as many of the options looked really good. Personally, I am partial to seafood, so I knew I had to start my week off right by ordering some fish. After a few minutes of looking at the menu I decided on the Fresh Fish Florentine - Catfish served with spinach covered in a warm hollandaise sauce with a lemon garnish on the side. Since this was my first meal in New Orleans, I had high expectations going in and this particular dish delivered in the clutch. The flavors mixed beautifully and the hollandaise sauce was particularly flavorful. Our table was also provided with several loaves of fresh bread, which added a nice touch. Others at the table ordered things like crawfish, red beans and rice, gumbo, and jambalaya. I think everyone was pretty satisfied with the food and the service was excellent.
One thing I would like to point out is that New Orleans has some of the nicest people you will ever meet. This makes the restaurant experience even better because you can expect quality service. Our group went to over a dozen restaurants and not once did we receive poor service (just a side note on New Orleans in general). As for the Gumbo Shop, you can expect great food, amazing service, and a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in the French Quarter!

Hit the spot. Back in NOLA for the weekend, we decided to stop by the Gumbo Shop because they were the only place without a long line at 11 AM on Sunday. It was a good choice. I ordered a bowl of seafood gumbo, a shrimp po-boy and a Cajun bloody mary. The rest of my party ordered various things and they really enjoyed them when it was all said and done. The gumbo came out first and it was rather bland. Some hot sauce added to it spiced it up some. The French bread was awesome with it, however. The bloody mary was excellent and much needed that morning. My po-boy didn't show with the rest of the meal and the waitress felt terrible about it. When it came out, she included a cup of beef gumbo on the house. That turned out to be my favorite part of the meal. All-in-all, we had a great experience at the Gumbo Shop and I could see myself returning next trip.
Creole food at it's best! Food is classic New Orleans comfort food in every bite. Service is above and beyond! It's no wonder The Gumbo Shop has been a New Orleans Landmark since 1945!

We were seated quickly & the service was excellent - thanks Babette! We had the BBQ shrimp, chicken espagnole & catfish florentine. Everything was served nice & hot. The creamed spinach had just enough nutmeg. Bread was good. Would recommend.

Ok gumbo. I went there for the Seafood Gumbo, it was just OK, I've had much better in California! The gumbo was bland and not flavorable, i had to add hot sauce to make it just ok. The service however was awesome, friendly and quick. The bread was fresh and crust was crispy.

Just ate there. My wife and I split the 24.99 sample meal. We had chicken andouille gumbo, the combo platter(beans and rice, shrimp creole, and jambalaya) mocque choux corn, and bread pudding. We are from New Orleans and I still say that this is the best shrimp creole I've ever had. Everything else was excellent as well, but the shrimp creole is better than anyone in my family makes (and we are serious cookers). I highly recommend this sampler to anyone curious about how these dishes should taste. So many places have mutated the recipes to something different. This is how Grandmaw makes it!
Consistently hits the spot year after year. Been going to The Gumbo Shop for at least 17 years, and my last visit was probably my best. Atmosphere is cozy, friendly, classic New Orleans. Our server was helpful and knowledgeable. He kept imitating Schwarzenegger's "Get to the chopper" but he said "Get to the kitchen"--hilarious. Had hot apple cider w/ a cinnamon stick, Christmas in a cup; tasted and smelled divine. I ordered the house pecan vinaigrette for a side salad; no other way to describe it except pecan pie filling made into a vinaigrette--wickedly delicious. I always get seafood and okra gumbo and it is always delightful, with French bread and butter. And finally we go home in a food coma.
Good food - loud staff. Great and flavorful gumbos. The best shrimp creole I have ever tasted. Velvety smooth red sauce with incredibly rich shrimp flavor. Great New Orleans feel in the heart of Quarter. Decent values to locals and tourists alike. Only issue here is staffing. Kitchen was constantly yelling at each other and it was like a PA system at your table. Service was slow and lacking and employees hanging out in the closed section were also loud and intrusive of the dining experience.
LOVED THIS PLACE!! It's nice and quiet which was a good break from
the city. Prices are reasonable and portions are big. The food itself is amazing and they get their shrimp in everyday so it's nice and fresh and never over cooked. Come here! You can even take some home frozen!
TRY THE CREOLE COMBO PLATTER. When in New Orleans, you have to have three dishes to say you have had Cajun/creole cuisine. They are jambalaya, shrimp creole and red beans with rice. The creole combo platter includes all three and each was nicely prepared and presented. They were all tasty and not overpoweringly spicy, so I really did not have a favorite.
I LOVED the andouille gumbo and boudin appetizer. If you're looking for authentic creole cooking in a classic NoLa restaurant, this is it.
My favorite lunch of the week. While in NOLA, I had lunch here. Po boy and gumbo. This place was really good, the staff were friendly and because it's on a side street it wasn't as busy as other places. The only down side was the washrooms, an outhouse is a step up.

French Quarter Favorite. The gumbo is delicious. Yes it is a tourist favorite and so the prices may be a bit high for somethings but overall great food red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, and bread pudding. For visitors who want a taste of classic staples of cajon creole foods New Orleans is famous for this is a nice accessible place to stop.

Visited here to get the authentic Cajun experience. My family ordered the pasta in white sauce with the crawfish and the blackened catfish with shrimp criole. I ordered the sampler platter for 13 dollars. Firstly it was not a large portion ( and there are little to no vegetables on the menu unless you want to pay 5 dollars for a side) it was very bland and I found myself sprinkling a lot of seasoning on it to spice it up. However that could not mask the taste of mud especially in my shrimp creole. Tasted like river water. The étouffée was pretty good and the jumbalaya was yummy but I had the taste of heavy mud in my mouth the whole night. The pasta dish my brother and mother ordered was delicious and the blackened catfish my father got was light and yummy and the creole he got wasn't muddy tasting at all. Maybe I got a bad batch or maybe I just can't appreciate true Cajun.

My little family of 4 ate here last night. We were sat immediately and had a really nice waiter! The shrimp creole was great! I also had a banana daiquiri...probably the best I'd ever had! Great hurricane too. The chicken and sausage gumbo was very favorable with a dark roux (the way we coonasses at home cook it). My 8 year old son ate the whole bowl! Great atmosphere.

The Crawfish Etoufee was delicious, as was the bread pudding. The gumbo was very flavorful, but I have to say that the crawfish was the best I've had in the Quarter.
Quaint little place. Awesome find in the Quarter. The courtyard here is very intimate, very nice. Much more than we expected. We were seated immediately on a small two top in the courtyard. The seating is very cramped as though they got as many tables and chairs as possible into the little space but it was great. Our server outlined our specials and I immediately eyed the Chicken Espagnole with rice. A half chicken smothered in an amazing sauce. The chicken was juicy and full of flavor. The rice was cooked perfectly and the accompanying turnip green were a wonderful surprise. My girlfriend had a blackened catfish which she thoroughly enjoyed and then it was time for dessert. We had the bread pudding and I paired it with a grand marnier. We enjoyed the perfect weather in the courtyard. Our server Catherine took really good care of us. It was a great dinner date.
We are locals and the wife and I have not eaten here in many years. We were walking by and decided to go in and get a bite to eat. The gumbo was not Good. Although it wasn't spicy there is plenty of stuff on the table to adjust the seasoning. My wife had the crabcake for appetizer and liked it. Lots of crab in it. I ordered the combo with shrimp etoufee jambalaya and red beans and I thought it was very good. The wife has the shrimp and corn bisque which was the special and although the waitress said nothing was spicy the chef that night had spiced it up and it was just right when I tasted it but too hot for the wife although she still liked it. Not bad at all and reasonably priced
I Agree. Touristy, but Worth It. This is the place you have to take neophytes to NOLA for a yummy sampler of New Orleans food. It's also the place to go when no one can make their mind up on where to go. Food has always been good; the service is friendly, if not always fast. This is a staple.
Definitely a good spot...will be back!. The Gumbo Shop was my final place to eat this Saturday and it was by far a great experience.
The service was great and the seafood gumbo and the chicken and sausage gumbo were superb.
We ordered the special cajun combination dinner which had jambalaya, crawfish ettufee and shrimp ettufee.
While my girlfriend did not like the crawfish ettufee, we both agreed that the gumbos and the shrimp ettufee and jambalaya was well worth the price of admission.
Would definitely go back again.

Great Jambalaya. It was my first time in New Orleans and after viewing the mouth watering pictures on Urban Spoon, I decided to check this pace out. Even though they are known for their gumbo, I went with the Jambalaya which was fan-friggin-tastic. I also paired it with an Abita amber ale which was also phenomenal. In addition, every meal is served with warm french french bread.....Great additive to the overall meal.
Nice Value. Walking around the Quarter, I've always been intrigued by this place by looking through its window, but had never gotten around to trying it. Finally did the other night and discovered it was unlike what I expected. The murals on the wall are beautiful and very New Orleans-esque. The place is very tightly packed and thus very loud, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic dinner, maybe check out some other place. However, if you're looking for a nice sampling of typical local dishes at a so-so level but good price, this is a good place to come to. The hostesses that evening were very friendly, but our waiter was not very attentive and a pretty sarcastic guy. All in all, I'd give it another whirl.

Shrimp Po Boy rocks. Don't believe the negative remarks here or anywhere else, I go here every time I am in New Orleans and I always get a good meal for a very reasonable price. The Po Boy is a big piece of French bread, they dig out the bread and fill it with seasoned shrimp and sauce and it's just excellent. Service is great, always a busy place, usually wait 10 minutes or so. It is on St. Peter about a block south of Bourbon on your way to Jackson Sq.

Brought a friend from out of the country here.... The experience was close to perfect and I'm not really that big on 'touristy' places, but I understand their purpose, and even though I'm not from here myself, I thought it was perfect timing for me to go. It was a terribly cold day, and walking around the quarter, no idea where or what to eat, my gf suggests the Gumbo Shop. We sit, and the server tells us that the special drink of the evening, because of the severe weather is a hot rum drink (I had no idea what it was or what it was mixed with), with a cinnamon stick in it. This thing was glorious. This is one of those drinks I will never forget, because if winter has a remedy, it was that drink.
The food? Just classic creole, we tried the Jambalaya, and the Gumbo, and it tasted great, just add some hot sauce and walla! Extremely friendly service, and from judging the food on other tables (I know, I know, this can be rude), I would like to go there again just to try their creole pasta dish which looked amazing.

Affordable in the French Quarter. I chose this place based on the reviews here and I was not disappointed. We came in for lunch and had a seat in the courtyard. I can't remember what name they gave it, but what I had was basically a half chicken with a couple sides. Pretty good. Also cheaper compared to other places.
Good Gumbo!. After a terrible meal at Pere Antoine, Gumbo Shop was SO good! I asked the waitress so many questions about the recipes that she brought me their cook book to look at. I used their gumbo recipe (online) to make turkey andouille gumbo after Thanksgiving, and I'll never go back to my old recipe. My my my, good place to eat! I think I'll order the cook book too.
Looks and sounds like tourist trap but isn't. Of all the places in the Quarter, if you would have asked me to name a tourist trap, I'd name it Gumbo Shop. On the outside I'd have a big wood sign with a gumbo pot filled with Creole delicacies. And if I were to warn you of such a place, I'd look at the surface of Gumbo Shop and say watch out!
But the Gumbo Shop is very good. The last time I ate here in Sept 09 I got the fried shrimp platter. There were about a dozen very plump and perfectly fried Gulf shrimp waiting for me to devour them. It was about $15, which was a little high, but those are Quarter prices and for Quarter options, it was actually a good deal as ACME wouldn't have as good shrimp and is more. Deanies is good, but you wouldn't get as many and they wouldn't be as big.
I haven't had anything else, but I can give my seal of approval for the fried shrimp platter.
I LOVE the gumbo here. With so many places that offer gumbo in the quarter - this truly is the best out there. It is flavorful with a dark roux and spicy kick. The Gumbo Shop hot sauce on the table is a great addition to the gumbo as well.
The atmosphere here is spectacular. With old murals on the inside and beautiful courtyards, every table has something special to look at.
As other mentioned, yes the lines can be long at times but it is worth it. If you'd like to avoid the lines head in there around 3 pm. No lines at all for my family and I on a Saturday afternoon.
Lovely. Definitely loved this place!!! My friend and I went there after reading the positive reviews. Loved the atmosphere. **FOOD WAS AWESOME!!!!** I had the Penne Pasta with Tasso sauce. So damn good. My friend had the some kind of platter with gumbo, red beans and rice and shimp creole. She loooovvved it. Her Hurricane was well made too. Our waitress, Lisa, was so nice and took good care of us. We sat in the patio and it was so nice. Totally wished I could go back.
Great service. The best redfish I've ever had. Gumbos are full flavored with the right amount of heat. A basket of their custom blended spices and sauces along with hot sauce are on every table. The bread is classic NO...crunchy crust with fluffy centers. And refilled without asking. Great turnip greens; smoky but still with a bite. Abita turbo dog on tap and the best bread pudding for miles completed an excellent dinner.
If you're going there, you have to try the Gumbo. I mean really. I come here every visit and I am alway satisfied. I am picky about Gumbo. It should be dark and somewhat thick, not see though and watery. They do it right. Other than the Gumbo though I cant really say if there is anything else that stands out. I had the seafood gumbo which was good. For an appetizer I had alligator sausage now that was awesome- full of flavor :) staff was friendly and atmosphere was comfortable and more on the quiet side compared to other restuarants in that area
Beyond Awesome!. My husband and I were newbies to New Orleans and cajun/creole food beyond what you buy in a box and make yourself in the midwest. We wanted to go where the locals go, so our hotel manager recommended them (along with Urbanspoon). My husband had the chicken gumbo, which was good, and I had the combination platter with crawfish ettoufe(?) with jambalaya and shrimp creole. The jambalay and shrimp creole was good, but the crawfish ettoufe was spectacular! I am so glad I ditched the comfort zone for this dish!
OK gumbo at a reasonable price. Service was OK. Ordered some boudin and the waitress couldn't even tell me if it was boudin blanc or noir, she just said it was brown! My chicken and sausage gumbo was good but it just didn't do it for me. It was a nice average lunch at a very reasonable price.

What's a PO-BOY??. I uttered this as we entered our first restaurant after landing in NOLA. Being assured my my wife that I would love it, we ordered the Hot Roast Beef PO-BOY. It arrived, and hand-to-my-heart, was the best sammich I've ever had! It is my No. 1 place to eat when I get to go back for a honest to goodness PO-BOY! Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Good Gumbo, So-So Service. I had the Chicken and Andouille Gumbo and it was really good. The roux was dark and gave the dish some depth of flavor.
The service on the other hand was less than average. The waiter seemed annoyed when my wife asked for a side salad (not on the menu). He brought us each a salad, even though I hadn't ordered one. I went ahead and ate it rather than irritate the waiter even more.
I'd definitely go back, but hope I don't get the same waiter next time.
Very good!. We went on easter sunday and it was pretty busy. service was a bit slow but that was fine with us because we were in no rush at all. the bloody mary was good and so was the fresh fruit daiquiri. gumbo is a MUST order. i had the crawfish pasta in a cream sauce and it was to die for. hubby had the 1/2 chicken in a mushroom sauce and he said it was pretty good.
Ya Ya. Started with a cup of seafood okra gumbo. The roux was dark, just the way I like it. I used the french bread to soak up every last spicy bite of it. The grilled boudin went really well with the creole mustard. I had the shrimp creole as my main and it was alright - could use a little more fire, so I added some tabasco. Finished dinner with the pecan pie. Definitely do it a la mode.
The service was good and friendly. The server also brought extra bread without being asked. I noticed a section for vegetarians on the menu.

Fun place. Good food at a great price..you know your in new orleans when you try teir awesome gumbo and boudin. It is a good place to bring yor kids without breaking yor wallet.
Good, not great. There are so few decent restaurants in the FQ in this middle price range that it is hard to knock one of the few good ones. Food is good, though far from incredible....but by FQ standards it is very good for what you pay. And the food is good and consistent. Drinks are very nice and service adequate. As a lunch place in the FQ, I think it holds up extremely well. For dinner it is fun to bring a group, especially if they are from out of town and want to go to the Quarter but not spend a ton.
Good food...so-so staff. I have been going to this place for years. I absolutely love their crawfish in tasso cream and their ettouffee. I do have to say that the last few times I've been there the hostess was difficult and rude to my friends whom I convinced to go. Still, the food is worth checking out.

Tasty food, great drinks and fun waitstaff. Mom and i went on a rainy Saturday and had no wait. Mom wasn't wowed by the gumbo but I loved my red beans and rice.
Recommended. 9/10 point Review. Don't go for lunch. That is if I'm in town. I don't want the line to be too long. The very best gumbo in the world! One of the best spicy bloody mary's in the world. Atmosphere is small and cozy and location is perfect if you're in the quarter. Don't go here for perfection of service, fancy linens, or an unusually creative and artistically plated dining experience. Go when you are hungry, and you don't want to be disappointed and you aren't wearing your coat and tie. Unless, you are dying to sit outside, I wouldn't sit in the small courtyard, bathroom lines tend to form out there and sometimes the sewage smell can permeate through the air. I am the restaurant snob, so greasy spoons, diners, and the like aren't my thing, but I love this place.

Great Gumbo. This place was recommended by the front desk at our motel. The Gumbo was one of the best I have ever eaten. The fried alligator was not so great.

I usually don't like waiting in line in order to eat, especially in a place with so many great restaurants, but it is a travesty to visit New Orleans without Gumbo Shop for lunch. Service is friendly, but mediocre at best. Dining room and small courtyard is crowded and cramped. Great Prices and Great Food. Seafood Gumbo is the best, hands down, anywhere. Shrimp Remoulade salad is worth trying too.

Great Casual Place. Gumbo here is, big surprise, the show stopper. It is the best. Everywhere else's gumbo is compared against their's. Always busy, so go early. Service is friendly but very casual. Perfect lunch spot in quarter. Also try shrimp remoulade salad and Spicy Bloody Mary.

Long line but was seated fast because. We took an outside table on hot day. There were fans on us and sufficient shade. Food was very good as was service. Strong bloody Mary's. Vegetarian choices. Worth the stop! Great food and good prices.
A Visitors Tradition. Whenever we have visitors in from outside of Louisiana, we try to take them to two restaurants, neither of them fine dining: Boutin's in Baton Rouge (where we live), a Mulate's clone that does very well with the cajun music, and The Gumbo Shop. The Shop does a fine daquiri, and is a good start for any of the traditional creole dishes. It is a pleasant courtyard, and the d'Zerbes is a good introduction to gumbo for any of the squeamish who might pay TOO much attention to what goes into their bill-of-fare.
Regular Haunt. One of the most consistent places that I've been visit after visit.

One Local's Fallback "FQ" Tourist Restaurant. The Gumbo Shop is a big, airy, busy dining room serving well-prepared, tasty, and affordable NOLA comfort food. It offers a broad menu friendly to many dietary needs and preferences. It is my fallback mid-range FQ tourist restaurant.
I ended up at The Gumbo Shop most recently in late 09/2008 for a 1 pm Saturday lunch with a group of 7 local college froshwomen on a lit class tour of the French Quarter. We found ourselves hungry and indecisive after finding the wait for the Napoleon House patio excessive.
Right there on the sidewalk, I pulled out the Urbanspoon iPhone app to assist in the pressing command decision in re Plan B for lunch. The Gumbo Shop! Yes!! We were all so hungry at this point, and the students wanted "New Orleans food."
My subcommandante swooped in ahead of a large challenger pack, and secured our table. Everyone ate well for a reasonable price. The lactose-intolerant ate. The vegetarians ate. Some people ate fish. Subcommandante ripped through a respectable+ roast beef po-boy. Several students enjoyed very good gumbo for the first time. The bread is crispy and generously-served. The service overall is competent and friendly, even in a superbusy room.
Everyone left stuffed. I can't quite remember, but I think we shared desserts. My boudin and mustard, cup of greens, cup of red beans, and cup of chicken andouille gumbo were well-prepared and satisfying.
The more adventurous tourist in search of New Orleans neighborbood comfort food should jump on the bus and go try Ignatius at 4200 Magazine Street at Milan Street (Uptown).
The Gumbo Shop also does catering off the same sort of New Orleans menu from Front Street location Uptown. Red beans, greens, and rice express to you in cunning heatpacked containering!
One thing I would like to point out is that New Orleans has some of the nicest people you will ever meet. This makes the restaurant experience even better because you can expect quality service. Our group went to over a dozen restaurants and not once did we receive poor service (just a side note on New Orleans in general). As for the Gumbo Shop, you can expect great food, amazing service, and a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely check it out if you find yourself in the French Quarter!

We were in New Orleans over the weekend for a friend's wedding. On Saturday, we rode bikes through the French Quarter and stopped for lunch at the Gumbo Shop. I'd flipped through the (local alternative newspaper) Gambit's "Best of" issue and the Gumbo Sho
I started to get hungry while wandering around the French Quarter in New Orleans. This meant lunch was happening soon, and the winning restaurant turned out to be the Gumbo Shop. Gumbo Shop is located in a historic building on St. Peter Street. They had indoor seating or outdoor seating in a nice looking courtyard behind the restaurant. I had the Seafood Okra Gumbo. According to the menu, this was okra, onion, bell peppers, celery, and a tiny bit of tomato sauteed and blended with shrimp and crab into a thick brown Creole soup - served over rice. This was a very tasty okra. There were plenty of good sized shrimp floating around in there, as well as half of a crab. The gumbo had just the right amount of spice. It was very flavorful, and wasn't too spicy or bland. I liked it! Bread was served on the side. I enjoyed Gumbo Shop. The food was good and the prices were much more affordable than the surrounding restaurants that I looked at. I'd return!
We had an amazing visit at the Gumbo Shop. Everyone was super friendly the moment we walked into the entryway. The inside had two wall paintings that looked old, but unsure of their age. There was a courtyard as well. I felt I was in Europe.
The food was also very good. Everyone, including our two teens ate everything. The bread was fresh, and our server was really nice and very attentive.
What to say? The jambalaya, shrimp creole, and gumbo were stand outs for me. I would skip the mint julep if I were to go again. It just didn’t live up to my expectations and didn’t taste good. The best part of the meal was the pecan pie a la mode. It came out warmed up, which was nice. The bread pudding was also covered in condensed milk and was quite sweet. These desserts were the best part of the meal for me. Our server was polite and attentive to our table and the food came out quickly. Would stop by again on my next NO trip!
Came here after a long day with my friends on a girl’s trip and wandered in even just for the name. Knew we wanted something hearty and comforting and this was it. It was a little cold when we walked in, maybe they had the AC blasting? But we were seated quickly and brought bread promptly. The food was great, warm and seasoned well and all the New Orleans must tries in one place, which is exactly what we were looking for. All of the varying stews and beans and rice (I don’t want to butcher the spelling) were cooked well. My friends and I were hungry and thought we ordered well but it’s heavier so we didn’t end up finishing everything on the table. But we wish we could!
Came here because all of the good reviews for gumbo and was not disappointed. Wait staff was very friendly. I ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo and it came out in less than two minutes with a bit of rice. Had a cold beer to wash it all down. Definitely recommend.
Came here on a Saturday night around 9pm and it wasn't too busy. We got seated promptly and was attended to very quickly. I got the Chicken Andouile gumbo, and my girlfriend got the jambalaya. The food was very flavorful and delicious. I devoured my food in a short period of time. Highly recommend this place if you're visiting the area.
We came here for lunch and needed a place that had vegan options and we hit the jackpot.
We got all gumbo options - Seafood, Chicken, and Vegan - all were delicious. Note - they have okra so they have a more thick texture, but it was delicious. Perfect portion, not too much.
We also had the bread pudding - phenomenal and very sweet. It was my mom’s birthday and we got a second dessert - brownie with ice cream - also phenomenal and huge!
Special shout out to Sam, our server, who was so nice, attentive and made each of us feel super special and taken care of.

This was a great place to stop in for appetizers. Gaynell was the biggest sweetheart! I had the crab cake appetizer with a hurricane drink. It was delicious, even the bread for the table came out nice and warm with butter. The location itself is pretty small, but the area doesn't call for much space anyhow. Would recommend for sure.

⭐️The service is great and food comes fast.
⭐️Drinks are strong & very refreshing in the heat. There’s a huge choice of frozen daiquiri flavours, I had melon and would recommend it here! 🍹🍈
As for the food… I had a cup of gumbo as a starter and creole shrimp for main. It’s not a high dining place and there is definitely better quality food in New Orleans, but will do the job if you’re hungry and want not fast food, fast. 😊

Gumbo Shop was a great place as a tourist to get a taste of New Orleans. I went by myself and was seated right away around lunch time on a Friday. The Jambalaya was delicious and I had actually thought about ordering another portion for takeout. The Seafood Gumbo was great but I think next time I'd rather just gumbo without seafood as there was minimal seafood.
Amazing local food in the heart of the French Quarter. You can't go wrong with this restaurant. Food was delicious - we had the 3-course dinner with gumbo bowl, combo, the espagnol chicken and bread pudding for dessert. Service was very fast (maybe a bit too fast for me). The only problem (for me) was: NO RESERVATIONS! You have to wait in line to get your number called. My wife and I waited for 20ish minutes. Still worth it though.
We got there around 5PM and didn't wait long to get our table.

My wife and I enjoyed a nice dinner at the Gumbo Shop. For apps, we had the blackened fish bites, and spinach and artichoke dip the fish bites were melt in your mouth buttery with the sauce. The artichoke and spinach dip was heavy on the spinach with store bought chips. I would not recommend it.
For the main event, I had the red beans and rice with smoked sausage and my wife had the Chicken and Andouille gumbo. The Red beans and rice were well cooked and were perfectly balanced with a lot of flavor. The sausage was a great addition adding a smokiness and juiciness to the dish. The Chicken and Andouille gumbo was delicious, well balanced with a hint of spice and not over powering.
Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, attentive without being over bearing.
In fairness when we dinned it was not a full dining room so the sound of the daiquiri machine was loud and we needed to pause our conversation until the machine was off.
Best gumbo I had in New Orleans, hands down. The atmosphere inside is perfect, with an open courtyard inside and intimate seating arrangements, really felt like a hidden gem walking in here. Service was quick and helpful and the food was simply amazing.
If you're anywhere in the French quarter, you must make the gumbo shop one of your stops.
