I had never had korean food before but I can confirm that it was delicious! The uniqueness of the food/the unique seating and the ambience of the restaurant were exquisite! As a vegetarian it is often hard to find decent food but this place really hit the top spot!!! If you're visiting new york definitely stop by this restaurant!!!
It's so exciting to find this beautiful vegan korean restaurant. The space itself is cozy and traditional looking. The tables are low, you have to take your shoes off before going in. Every time the servers bring you a dish, they provide an intimate experience. I mean, they prepare the noodles carefully on your table with different sauces and ingredients. Just the way they serve the lemonade is special. The food was delicious, really worth the price.
In New York, a Korean restaurant, in China Town, serving Vegetarian food, and its YUM! Uncanny, but true. A small restaurant with a limited menu but enough variety, extremely helpful servers, and impeccable service. A must visit for all vegetarians!
Fave place for korean in the city. Love the avocado bibambap. Half a point taken off for the sometimes snooty service from the people at the front desk.
Best meal I had in NYC on a recent trip. They have these rice cakes that are just addictive in a hot pot dish. Never thought one could do vegetarian dishes with Korean food but they proved me wrong. They did it and did it spectacularly. Was surprised that even the lightly fried mushrooms were delicious. Traditional seating and tight quarters but worth it.
My first experience to this Korean place has been outstanding... an awesome vegetarian and vegan place I must say ... we did make reservations as this place always has waiting or sold out ...
1. Sweet Corn and Spinach Soup - was just like baby food, served hot and just had some salt - 3/10
2. Appetizer - Combination Pancakes
Which was leek, kimchi mushroom & kabocha pumpkin with mung beans - overall very bland and not very tasteful - just tiny bite size pieces - 5/10*
3. Tofu Kimchi Hotpot - tofu with Korean cabbage and veggies in a hotpot was delicious - very soupy and flavourful- 9/10
4. Spicy Chili Mushrooms - was super delicious ... 4 different types of mushrooms were cut and perfectly blended in a spicy chili sauce - 10/10
5. Purple Rice - very well made which went perfectly well with the above dishes - 10/10
Do order the spicy and regular kimchi - best Korean cabbage!
The best part is you got to remove your shoes and sit down and enjoy the meal ... a little expensive to ones pocket but definitely not a miss !!
A haven for vegetarians and vegans. Even the meat lovers won't miss the meat. Lychee Mojito, Stuffed Shitake Mushrooms, Bean Curd with Kimchi and Vegetables in Spicy Sauce, and Tofu Chocolate Pudding were some of my favorites.

Hangawi is by far one of the coolest Asian dining experiences I have had. A very nice, Vegetarian Korean restaurant that serves some great food.
But what makes the experience different and special is how the restaurant follows their traditional seating culture. First off, you are requested to take off your shoes before you enter the dining area; they give you a pair of slippers for use within the restaurant. Then you sit on the floor with a cushion underneath to make your seat comfortable. Also the way they have designed it, you will get to hang your legs down, as its raised seating. I suppose they figured not everyone is comfortable in the yogi style seating ☺.
The ambience is very nice and soothing with low lighting and dark wood fit out. Some cool art of the walls. The staff and service are excellent, giving you a Zen feel. Loved everything we tried from the menu.
If you enjoy Asian cuisine then this place is a great spot in NYC!
Super place! Super food!! Super staff!!! Super service!!!! Everything about this place was picture perfect. Food was cooked, served & presented in style. Loved everything that we ordered. The staff was very friendly & helped us decide on the menu. An ultimate experience for vegetarians who would want to try their hands on korean food. Highly recommended..
Amazing. The best part of my entire NYC trip. Plant based whole food diet friendly. Atmosphere was killer. Wear clean socks as you will be removing your shoes.
If you want to take someone out for an interesting dinner, this is definitely the place. We had an authentic Korean cuisine experience.
As soon as you ever, they ask you to remove your footwear and get in. With a low flooring seating, it really is gives you an authentic experience. The staff were really courteous and the place has a really good ambience to it.
The food was excellent. The prices maybe a bit high, but it's totally worth it.
Was surprised to see a vegetarian Korean restaurant in New York. It was very aesthetically done and had low floor sitting.
The food was interesting and d spicy soy sauce was out of this world. I had the cylindrical rice cakes. Korean glass noodles. Soup. And so much more. Everything was interesting and also the best Korean I have eaten till date. That too vegetarian. !!
Worth a visit.
Last week, I met up with Sanne aka Mitzie Mee for a blogger lunch date at Hangawi... Love how blogging brings people together!.. We started with an order of the Spicy Kimchi Mushroom Pancakes ($13). This was not on the lunch specials list, but how can you pass on kimchi pancakes? I really enjoyed all three of the dipping sauces, and the pancakes had great flavor and texture... I’m glad that my Monoglian Hot Pot ($13) had a milder spiciness, which allowed me to sip on it like a soup. It was really comforting and warms the soul. My hot pot was loaded with tofu, wild bracken shoots, mushrooms, and many other tasty veggies.
Worth the Trip. Excellent cuisiine. Maybe not as good as described in Zagat. A little pricey, but this is to be expected in NY for something unique. A must try for vegetarians. Mmmm--smooth silky mushrooms!
Amazing. This place was fantastic, from the food to the atmosphere it was simply amazing. Be prepared to leave your shoes at the front door when you come here to eat.
Pricey and a little stuck up. The restaurant is originally Korean - decor and staff are all neatly "ethnic" and the menu is great for vegetarians. The food was great, the atmosphere is excellent, but the prices are really up there and the staff was a bit stuck up especially with their idea of what you should spend. When we only ordered one appetizer and two main dishes, no wine, no extras and no desserts, the staff indirectly showed us their disapproval and at some point even pointed out that we were not giving enough tip - they recommended 20 % and actually came back with the cheque and ask for us to revise. They serve great food but their attitude needs to change.
September 14, 2013 by Cobi | 0 comments One of the best meals on my recent trip to New York was the prix fixe lunch at Hangawi . The moment you walk in and surrender your shoes before entering the dining room, you know you are in for a different type of experience.Wear something comfortable on your lower half, as you will have a seat on a floor cushion and enjoy your lunch service on a low table. Order a soju mojito and get ready for some superb vegan Korean food. My pal Ali split the Mini Emperor’s Lunch with me,which consisted of pumpkin porridge, jap chae, bi bim bap, and petite scoops of chocolate + vanilla almond soy ice cream. We also ordered a Hangawi salad with mixed fresh greens, shredded pear, cucumber and crispy taro in a special sesame dressing. I didn’t feel guilty about the additional order of GF kale pajeon because hey, there’s green stuff in it! The cost: (1) $22 prix fixe lunch+additional salad+appetizer + two cocktails = about $60 before tip © 2013, Veggietorials . All
I owed my friend a dinner for her birthday and we wanted to go somewhere near Kips Bay where we were going to a movie afterwards, so we decided a trip to Koreatown was in order. I asked my friend for her recommendations and she went through a list of great restaurants, but her eyes lit up when she mentioned Hangawi , so I know that was the one. Right away, we were impressed. When you walk in the door, you must remove your shoes and then the tables are a couple feet above floor level, but underneath is cut out so that you are sitting normally.

Though on the edge of K-town, you won’t find communal BBQs at Hangawi, a Zen temple of vegetarian Korean fare. When E suggested we try a Korean vegetarian place he had been to for lunch, I did not expect this level of elegance. After some jerky driver beh
I went with my non-vegetarian mom, and we both enjoyed the food! We got the vegetable fritters, black truffle dumplings , pancake platter and Zen Stone Rice Bowl.
I would highly recommend the pancakes and will absolutely get them again! I liked the stone rice bowl a lot too, and the dumplings were a great dish to share.
In terms of vibes, HanGawi is a cool experience. You take off your shoes when you arrive, and the seats are cushions on the ground, with openings under the tables so you can still sit with your legs hanging. The tables are kind of close together and the waitstaff may have to lean over/around you to serve food though.
When you come inside you take off your shoes. You're seated at these comfortable low intimate tables. I wanted to try everything on the menu.
The cocktails were good with suju, try the Lychee Mojito (sweet) or Purple Lotus Tea Martini. (Not that strong but tasty).
Highly recommend choosing an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The recommendations I asked for from our server were on par. Everything he recommended was 10/10.
Such a treat every time! My third time going here - my friends and I split the pancakes platter, crispy mushrooms, kimchi bibimbap, and spicy rice cakes. They used to have a black sesame cake that was amazing, but the chocolate cake was very good as well. My friends also enjoyed the teas. $50 for each of us split 3 ways. Truly worth it given how much we enjoyed each dish. My personal favorite was the spicy rice cakes (not spicy which may disappoint some, but very tasty). I’d recommend splitting dishes family style, you won’t regret the trip!
This place was such a great finding! The food was terrific, and filling; the ambience was unparalleled. Overall, excellent value. Each course in the prix fixe a surprise and a delight. The Japanese decoration created perfect harmony and gave me a very relaxing time.
Where to begin? Having lived in Korea for three years, I'll say: this is as good as it gets! Food is absolutely outstanding. The vegan spin on crispy pork in sweet and sour sauce (탕수육) was the showstopper for us.
The set menu looked fantastic, but everything à la carte was equally appetizing. We chose the latter for time constraints. Can't wait to come back for the seasonal prix fixe.
An excellent restaurant for fantastic Korean food. Completely vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant.I loved the Hangawi Stone bowl for the main course meal. Vegetable dumplings were great appetizer option as well. Ginger tea is fantastic and recommend to get it.
I spilled a cocktail by mistake and they were so kind to replace it and I was very impressed seeing their response. Thank you to their staff for their kind gesture.
The atmosphere was great, food was fantastic and people are awesome at the restaurant.
Must visit place if you love and appreciate amazing food options
The absolute finest meal and dining experience we’ve had in NYC! With traditional seating, attentive staff and amazing food, we binged to the point of overeating! Would highly recommend getting reservations well in advance. And do try their stuff mushrooms, as well as their refresher beverage (non alcoholic).
Would highly recommend coming to Hangawi if you get the chance. The ambiance is very pleasant and the service is great.
We ordered the spicy baby dumplings and the rice cakes, which we would recommend getting. The crispy mushrooms were crispy and savory.
We also ordered the plum tea and the shissandra chinesis tea. We both liked the shissandra chinesis tea more, but both were sweet and delightful.
We ordered the noodles with matsutake, they had a very mild flavor and it was a very large quantity. Because we had lots of flavorful food beforehand, we weren't able to taste it. But if I went back and only ordered 1 thing, I would order it again.
We ordered the spicy kimchi and tofu bowl. It was a nice way to end the meal. I would order it if you like kimchi.
Having a reservation here is recommended. Loved the food and service. Staff were attentive and friendly. Before being seated, shoes must be removed and staff will take care of them. Dining experience is one of a kind. We ordered Spicy baby dumplings, sesame leaf covered tofu, and tofu hot pot. All the items tasted fresh and to our likes. We will be back to try more items. Recommend this place.
By far one of the best restaurants i have been so far in nyc. Great food, great staff, great atmosphere- everything was just up to the mark. The place was very clean and had a unique concept of sitting similarly to the japanese style of dining. Everything is vegan in this restaurant. Recommend getting a reservation prior visiting this restaurant. I loved the bibimbap and its red beans ice cream. And would definitely recommend the spicy baby dumplings - though it says spicy but it was quite mild.
I was planning a trip to NYC and on tiktok someone mentioned this korean restaurant, which was vegan and/vegetarian so decided to check it out.
the ambiance was really nice and the service was good in explaining the dishes. the food was incredible
we started with the sushi platter which provided a variety and each had a unique flavor - my friend said it was some of the best sushi they’ve had ever. we then got a salad which was also good and for the mains we got different bibimbap — both of which were plentiful in size and flavor
overall great food and excellent service
My husband and I ate here for the first time recently. The food was amazing, I especially loved the Korean Pancake Platter and my husband really enjoyed the Kimbap sampler. The service was so great—they really anticipated all of our needs. And the whole restaurant was so cozy and comfortable. I can’t wait to come back and try more!
I came here with my wife and my mother-in-law because both my mother-in-law and myself are vegetarian. This place is by far the best vegetarian dining experience after the Japanese Michelin star restaurant which was closed last year.
We ordered a three-flavor pancake, fried cauliflower, plant-based bulgogi, kimchi stone bowl, and avocado stone cold. Everything was super delicious and I think it's one of the best Korean restaurants in the city (for vegetarians).
The service was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and mixed with a little bit of Korean traditional colors and decorations. However, I wasn't impressed by the cocktail (I had reincarnation), compared to how good the food was.
The big surprise that night - they do something different for the birthday song! Please do let them know if any of you are celebrating your birthday!!!
fully vegan Korean restaurant. The vibes are amazing, and you have to take your shoes off to sit. The food is 4/5. Our favorite was the pancake set! The soy protein bulgogi stone pot is okay, as good as it gets for imitation meat I feel like (as a omnivore lol) I recommend🤩

Really ambient atmospheric conditions indoors for a Sunday Afternoon Brunch. No timed limitations for a party of four. Very exceptional menu items and purely vegan too. The Bulgogi vegan version with its own plant-based meat was superb! Definitely a must if you have a chance to try it here. All the entrees are terrific and the appeal of just appetizers alone is amazing too.
Everything about this restaurant is amazing! The food is to die for, and the servers are so sweet and attentive. Hands down my favorite restaurant in NY, if your in the area, please go…you will NOT regret it
From the moment I stepped into Hungwai, I felt an inviting ambiance that promised an unforgettable culinary journey. Located in the heart of NYC, Hungwai is a gastronomic oasis that stands out in the bustling food scene.
The Hungwai rice bowl was a delightful combination of textures and flavors. Every grain of rice was perfectly cooked, complementing the toppings which were both generous and fresh. A bite into this bowl and you're immediately transported to a world where culinary passion meets art.
The Tofu Steak was sublime. Soft and delicate on the inside while having a beautifully seared exterior, it was seasoned to perfection. It's not often that tofu is elevated to such gourmet status, and Hungwai has mastered it.
A special mention must go to the Vermicelli. Light, flavorful, and with just the right amount of bite, it was a delightful accompaniment to the other dishes.
But the star of my meal was the Crispy Cauliflower. Perfectly crispy on the outside and succulent within, it was a testament to Hungwai's dedication to elevating every ingredient they touch. It's a dish that will linger in my memories, beckoning me back for another taste.
Service was impeccable, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who added to the overall wonderful experience.
In a city renowned for its vast array of eateries, Hungwai sets itself apart with its unique offerings and unwavering commitment to quality. I'll be raving about this meal for a long time and eagerly anticipate my next visit.
Great vegetarian Korean restaurant. The dumplings and cauliflower bites were amazing, I really liked the pancakes and the rice cakes. The waiter Nobu was amazing and highly attentive. Highly recommend.
