The entrance door gives no hint of the world inside. The crowds, the ambience, the old church architecture with stained glass windows were all a big surprise.
We had iced tea, Pinot noir wine, traditional pizza with basil, mushroom, pepperoni topping. The size, despite being a 6-piece small pizza was big for us,but most delicious.

Excellent pizza! There aren't many true authentic NY style pizza restaurants in the tourist areas, but this one of the best. Coal fired ovens make some of the best crispy thin crust pizza you'll find. This is usually one of my first stops any time I go to NY city. They don't do slices, though (which is not a bad thing....you always know your pizza was freshly made). Enjoy!

The pizzas are tremendous! Size of a US Manhole, a lot of sustenance at the cost, the main thing I would propose is ensure the cheddar on the pizzas are mozzarella since it's appears they utilize a ricotta kind of cheddar which is alright however ends up dull and filling the further through the pizzas you get. Tip: on the off chance that you arrange an expansive that is sufficient to share between 2 or 3.

We came to New York eager to try some authentic NYC pizza, and decided on John's. They didn't disappoint. Authentic style pizza's, really well cooked thin bases, and minimal toppings was what we were hoping for, and was exactly what we got. We didn't expect the garlic rolls and pizza dipping sauce to be so good but they were SOOO insanely yum. Great service, and a great dinner all round.

Stumbled upon John’s Pizzeria while walking through the theater district, in search of authentic New York style pizza. Somewhere between Shubert and Majestic, this beautiful building with its high stained glass ceilings and large murals used to be a church that was converted into a pizzeria in the 1920s. The enormous brick-oven pizza was delicious, thin-crust and lived up to the spectacular ambience. Excellent choice of toppings too. If you’re looking to take the load off after much wandering through the bustle of Times Square, John’s is the absolute best place to escape to, even if its just for an afternoon.

This place was fantastic. We had the margherita pizza, and it was simple, fresh, and executed perfectly. The crust was extraordinary. The wait time was far shorter than advertised. I had just flown back with my family from two weeks in Asia, and my daughter wanted to ice skate, so we went to Rockefeller Center, and hit this place on the walk back to Penn Station (took a train Upstate). It was everything we were hoping for out of a NY pizzeria. The garlic roll appetizers were terrific as well.

Think about pizzas in Times Square and I would strongly recommend John's pizza which has a brilliant atmosphere, mouthwatering aroma and delicious pizzas for a true American Italian experience😍😍.
Here they make fresh pizzas right in front of you in a wood fired oven.
The pizzas are huge, thin crust and have really fresh ingredients.
Service was good and fast.
It's not about eating a pizza but to feel the pizza.

Ambiance: this pizza place is massive! There are two floors for seating convenience. The lighting is dim, but romantic in a way. The aroma of freshly prepared pizza and other accompaniments lingers in the air which makes your mouth water!
There are four visible stations in which the food is prepared, so essentially there is no official kitchen I suppose. We can see the chefs prepare the pizzas very artistically and it is a treat to see dishes roll out of the cooking stations!
This place is so much in demand. The crowd is massive and people wait in long lines outside this pizzeria just to take a bite of their mind-blowing pizzas! Now you know this is a great restaurant!

Service: the waiter was knowledgeable in the menu recommendations and serving quantities. He had guided us choose the drinks, sides and pizza which were all extremely yummy!
He quickly took our order and had served the food at our table, straight from the hot oven!
In totality, this aspect of the restaurant is great.

Food: this is the actual highlight of the restaurant. The food served is just out of the world! There is just so much variety in the menu. Quality and quantity is not compromised here. They serve all dishes with the best of the best ingredients which are very fresh.
There are hardly any words to describe this food. Just brilliant!

We had:
*John's Garlic Rolls
*Marinara Pizza with all vegetarian toppings (Large)

The pizza was stupendous! It is a thin crust base with various yummy toppings. Each topping in the pizza has its own unique flavor and in each bite you can taste the individual toppings! This is what that makes this pizza so fascinating. It doesn't need any ketchup for accompaniment as it is delicious on its own.

This is hands down, the best pizza I have consumed till date!

Suggestion:
Try to get to this pizzeria as soon in the day as possible. This is because after about 6PM, there is a huge queue waiting to get in. We had arrived at this place early and hence got a convenient seat.

Would I come back for more?
--- YES YES YES!!

Overall, my experience in John's Pizza of Times Square has been awesome!

John's was recommended to us by a friend. Popular place near the Broadway shows. It is in a reconditioned church. Our wait was supposed to be 1hr, but they managed the tables very efficiently, but we were able to sit sooner than that. We ordered a large and small pie for four people. We also split a salad. The food was good, service was also good. Atmosphere could have been a little nicer. Because of popularity it felt a little cramped, but great for people watching.

We visited in May 2010, but I still can remember the taste and the joy I had at eating these extraordinary pizzas! The service and the ambience is also just awesome.
Being just two of us, we were not sure of how to go about ordering such that there is not much wastage, and yet we get to eat both the pizza and the garlic bread and try something else also. The waitress was helpful and solved our problem why suggesting how to go about. It was a Sunday afternoon well spent! ( no pun intended)

Holy Pies! We swung by John's after catching a Knicks game (partly because it was the only thing open that late) and not knowing what to expect we were somewhat surprised when we opened the doors to the “restaurant” to find that, umm, well, it’s a friggin Church!

I’ve never been to Church before but I could totally get down with the whole religion thing if they served pizzas as good as John’s in every place of worship.

Not sure if the whole illustrious ‘coal fired oven’ thing which John’s is famous for makes a huge difference but the pizza itself is quality and considering it’s located in Times Square prices are more than reasonable.

Amen.

We had the pepperoni and caramelized onion pizza... It was great and I think its better than Lombardi's!!!!!!! If you like them check out Capizzi's!!

The dining room is large and open, something unique in a city with tables crowded together. We were seated on the upper level, which afforded us a feeling of privacy. The room was decorates with a three-story mural of Manhattan from the NJ side of the Hudson. Four brick oven were distributed to the corners of the restaurant and were staffed with cooks preparing that evening meals.
I ordered Penne Arrabbiata and added sausage. We each ordered a salad, but the waiter pointed out that one salad feeds two to three. The salad was delivered quickly so we had something to eat as we awaited the main course. The ingredients were fresh and the oil & vinegar dressing was flavorful with a sharp tanginess.
The entrée was huge with three links bigger than a roll of half dollars! The pasta was cooked cooked well, the sauce was deep red, and clung well to the noodles. As I stirred the noodles, clouds of steam puffed from the pasta. It fogged up my glasses. The sausage had a dense texture as I crewed it. Still, I was easily able to cut it with my fork. It had a mild, satisfying flavor. I prefer sausage with a hint of heat, but it was appetizing. The saucer I ordered was suppose to be spicy, but I was rather disappointed. Although is had a good flavor, it definitely was not spicy. However, by the third of fourth bite, I found that my tongue was tingly. By the tenth mouthful, I was fully aware that my mouth was heated!
After I had eaten all I could, my plate looked like I hadn't eaten any thing because the portion was so generous. There was enough food left over to feed a small country! The only thing I regret is that we didn't order any garlic bread with my pasta.
Someone at our table ordered spaghetti and meat balls. The two balls were like baseballs. Two others split an order of Chicken Alfredo, and they couldn't clean their plate. I was told that the sauce was rich and creamy. They liked it even better than a favorite pasta place back home. We liked Johnny's!

Great Food!. Seeing the crowds this place draws I thought it would take over an hour to get a table.... Only waited about 25 minutes until we were seated (Saturday evening of labor day weekend). Really cool restaurant, great pizza and appetizers. We got the garlic rolls which had mozzarella in them and the bruschetta for apps, both GREAT! Got 2 small pies for our group of 4 which was a perfect amount of food. The pizza was cooked perfectly! Crispy crust and bottom... Great toppings too! Im not sure I want to fight the crowds of NYC ever again in my life, but I would (in theory) go back to Johns for some delicious pizza!

Dessert is yummier than pizza. I consider myself a pizza snob, having gone to at least half of the top 10 zagat rated pizzerias in NYC like Joe and Pats, Goodfellas and Spumoni Garden. Joh's pizza was a nice thin crust, but not crispy. They cheese on the traditional pie was double the amount I'm used to, especially proportionally to the thin crust. The dessert menu was one of the most delicious desserts I've tasted.

We are staying at the Marriot at TS, heard good things about John's. We decided to just order and pick up. We got a large cheese, garlic rolls, mozzarella wedges and a house salad. Ordering was difficult- the person sounded very disinterested, not distracted, just disinterested. Had to repeat three times. We picked up and got to meet the same person- and our phone idea of him was true. He picked up his cell phone more than once, ignored questions. Pizza was good, a little greasy but good flavor. The salad says it feeds 1-3, which is not true. The garlic bread twists were fantastic ! Other than the takeout server - satisfied.

Loved it. We loved the pizza. It was cooked exactly how it should have been. The cheese, sauce, and pepperoni were delicious and the amount of each was generous. I loved the sweetness of the sauce and the smokiness of the cheese. We also shared a Caesar salad and the romaine lettuce was fresh.

We went on Saturday, 7/10/10 around 6:00 p.m. The place was packed but we were seated quickly. The service was very good.

Let's Go to Church. Literally the midtown sanctuary of pizza, this former gospel church with stained-glass dome ceiling now boasts two coal-fired ovens as the culinary altar. Perfect before or after a show on the Great White Way, share a large pie along with their fragrant pesto fettucine. For value, location, and a proverbial New York pizza, why would you want to tithe anywhere else?

Perfect NY Style Pizza. I generally avoid restaurants near uber-touristy areas like the plague, as they have no incentive to provide even mediocre food, but I heard many good reviews about this pizza joint in the heart of Times Square and decided to give it a try anyway. I was so glad we did. We were looking for some excellent NY pizza on our recent visit, and we definitely found it here. It was reasonably priced, especially for the location, and I quite enjoyed our pizza and apps (calamari and pizza rolls). Would definitely recommend. Only downside is the rather uncomfortable wooden booth we had - they clearly do not want you to linger. Some might also not be used to surly waitstaff, but that's just NY for ya...

"HOW to DO John's - an Education". 1. This is considered, among true NYers and those who know what NY pizza should taste like, to be some of the best pizza in the city; if you prefer your Domino's or or gourmet (Two Boots), or Chicago-style pie, this is your issue, not John's.

2. This is NOT an expensive restaurant for NYC - especially for Times Sq. If you've checked out the prices at TGI Friday's just a few blocks away, you'd realize this. Yes, if you load a thin-crust-style pizza down with five toppings, it gets pricey, but that's unnecessary. Stick to 1-3 toppings and actually TASTE the pie: cheese, sauce, dough.

3. This is John's PIZZERIA, not PASTA or PANINIRIA. Yeah, there are other options, but they're known for their pizza, so don't complain unless you've really had the John's experience...the pizza.

4. Order a pitcher of soda, juice or beer if you're going to want more than one drink. You don't get free refills anywhere in TImes Sq. Split a salad, a pitcher and a pie and you've had yourself a bargain. The fried calamari is also excellent if you don't mind spending a little more.

5. The wait's long because this is a tourist hot spot and it's right in the middle of the theatre district. Get to John's for a late lunch (after 2pm) and any time before 6pm to avoid a long wait.

6. Some of the servers are amazing. Some aren't. This isn't fine dining. The restaurant is huge and these guys are racing during a rush. Customary tip in NYC is 18-20% for good service. If the waiter doesn't plaster on a fake smile and tell you their name like you're at Denny's, this doesn't mean they're not nice or not giving you good service; it means you're not at Denny's. Low tips are of course, the customer's right for poor service, i.e. mistakes that are the server's fault directly, blatantly surly attitude, or never checking in on you. If there's a problem with your food, speak up and let the server or a manager know so it can get fixed. They will fix it.

Take it from a true New Yorker, this is a unique and affordable experience if you know what to expect.

Good Pizza, Great Location!. The pizza is good at John's, not great. This is the kind of place you go to... just to see the unbelievable surroundings! It is a huge two level restaurant. (formerly a Tabernacle built in 1888).. the largest pizzeria in the country! It has a five story stained glass cupola and a huge mural of early NY. They bake the pizza in two large coal fired ovens... it's really a sight to behold! I think "Two Boots" pizza is better, but you can't beat John's location off Times Square!

Very good pizza, a little on the expensive side but still worth it. I wasn't impressed with the garlic bread but it was OK. Lots of tables but they fill up fast. The open space and stained glass ceiling make for a nice atmosphere. Service was fast and friendly.

Great crust and cheese but the sauce could be tastier and more abundant. Like it better than most in new York but still prefer mellow mushroom.

Miss this place. Used to live pretty close to John's but I moved away... and regret it. In retrospect, I should've moved directly into Johns. Directly into the ktichen, and hooked an IV up to the pizza sacue so I could mainline that shit. Awesome 'za, hit it up.

Great Food and Atmosphere. Food is very good and a great price for Manhattan. They don't do slices, so you must get a full pie-but totally worth is because you will want more than 1 slice! Penne al a vodka is a favorite. If you are in the theater district, you MUST stop here.

Fun place to eat in midtown. I love Johns Pizzeria. Their pizza is hot and gooey and perfect every time. Pizza not your thing? Their other entrees are delicious. I have had the eggplant parm several times and it was fantastic. For added pleasure, sit under the old church dome room. It is a large place with a great decor. My only complaint is that there is often a long way to get a table.

New York City pizza is, hands down, the best pizza on the planet.  Chicago natives will try to argue this, but I will stand firm.  MUST GET PIZZA, is my mantra when we travel there.  One of the best places to get pizza in NYC is Joe's Pizzeria.  Located on the edge of the theater district, on 44th and 8th, Joe's Pizzeria opened in 1997, in an old church and sports lofty ceilings and stained glass. We were seated on the second floor giving us an amazing view of the mural on the back wall done by Douglas Cooper.  It is breathtaking.  We also had a view of all 4 of the coal-fired brick ovens used to serve the in house and take out masses.  We started with John's Garlic Rolls.  You know it has to be good if it has the restaruant name in it!  And boy was it awesome!! Soft dough wrapped around garlic, mozzarella and olive oil!  They give you marinara to dip too!  My husband was so happy they left the remaining marinara for him to dip his pizza in. We got a ceaser salad next, that was gigantic! Glad we where sharing it!  The dressing was perfect, not to garlicky or fishy.   Now to for the  PiÚce de résistance, the pizza!  This pizza is absolutely fantastic!!!  Gooey cheese and thick pieces of meat on a crust so thin that the pizza bends when you lift it of the tray.  It is like magic in your mouth.  We happily had left overs that provided the best breakfast on the plane home.  I wish I had taken a whole pie with us so I could have some now!   I  My husband and I were very happy with our meal at John's Pizzeria and I know you will too!  Happy Eating!

Next time you’re in New York walking around Times Square looking for good pizza please do yourself a favor and hit up John’s Pizzeria. John’s is my favorite spot in the area and a must stop whenever I’m in NY. John’s opened this location in 1997 in what was once the Gospel Tabernacle Church. Don’t expect to order a slice here John’s is strictly about the pie “No Slices” will be coming out of the brick ovens in this tourist joint. But what does come out of the ovens are heavenly
The perfect blend of sauce and fresh mozzarella with a great thin crispy crust which has just that lil char we all look for in a great pie
The pizza is great here the only issues you will run into is the line to get into this joint lets face it you’re in Times Square and this place packs them in. My advice stand by the bar order a beer and wait for someone to get up and eat at the bar especially at night. The mozzarella is so good here make sure you order an extra cheese pie trust me! 2 fingers

I was a bit confused with the pizza menu at Johns, with two pizzas that looked the same, the traditional and the margherita and when I asked with the difference was, could not get a coherent answer. Once the pizza was delivered, I finally understood that the margherita had a LOT of basil included, so much in fact that it looked like a green pizza! After taking most of the basil off, the pizza was pretty good. The crust was thin and crunchy and the mozzarella was fresh and nicely melted, although there was simply not enough of the mozzarella on the pizza. My main issue with John's pizza, which really detracted from the quality, was the tomato base was a little bland, otherwise, this pizza would have been right up with the best.

Easily one of the most famous pizza restaurants in the city, John's sits in the heart of the Theater District.  It's located in a beautiful building that once housed a church.  Make sure to look up at the domed ceiling. The place caters to a theater-going crowd, and tends to be crowded just before and after shows.  We went on a Thursday evening around 8:30.  We were a large party but were seated almost immediately. The menu offers a variety of Italian dishes.  Garlic bread served as an appetizer was very pungent and topped with gooey mozarella.  A salad "for two" was easily shared by four.  I've always liked the pizza rolls, but was disappointed that this appetizer was not served until the entrees were on the table.  Chicken parm was adequate but not outstanding -- the cheese on top were overly-browned, almost to the point of being burnt. The specialty here is pizza.  Thin crust, brick oven pizza.  Served hot, crispy and delicious.  They don't sell by the slice.  You must buy the whole

The crust was good, crispy and not floppy, with a nice char. My favorite was the pizza bianca that fortunately did not have garlic. I also appreciated that both pizza had lots of cheese.

We visited John's of Times Square on the advice of my Sister in law, who visits when she's in New York City. The restaurant is housed in an old church, with four brick pizza ovens installed on the back wall on two floors. There is a nice bar up front when you walk in, and a nice large dining room in the rear of the building. We started with some locally made lager beers on tap and a big, beautiful antipasti salad. The drinks and salad were served promptly by our server. The salad was crisp and delicious, with lovely little pinwheels of Soppressata and mozzarella. The house-made dressing was superb... Tangy and tossed perfectly into the salad. Mains were two large pizzas...One was pepperoni, mushrooms and (according to my bride) "REALLY GOOD sun-dried tomatoes". My pie was meatballs and pepperoni. Both pizzas had crispy, flavorful crusts, robust marinara sauce and ample toppings. Do yourself a favor and make sure you get over to John's of Times Square, but don't try to pop in for a slice.. Only whole pies are sold here 😁

Amazing pizza and great atmosphere. The whole place looked stunning, with an amazing feeling. The staff were average and friendly. I got a salad which was good. It was fresh and refreshing, with a bit of spice which gave a nice contrast to the salad. The dressing was acidic and added great depth to the overall flavor. The pizza was amazing. The actual pizza was crispy but also soft. It gave an initial crunch, but was soft on the inside and the cheese mixed well with the tomatoes and basil. The crust was alright, not amazing but not horrible. Pretty average, maybe slightly above. It was too crunchy, more like a Olive Garden bread stick than a crust but it was still good. Overall amazing food and environment.

Who would think that in the middle of Times Square there would be a great pizza place in an old converted church. Well here it is. The owners renovated an old tabernacle church and are serving the best coal fired pizza. Everything is made to order so plan on sitting for awhile as you watch the pizza makers make your pie. Trust me
the pizza is the best and this is my favorite pizza in NYC.

The history of this place is what's so captivating. I highly recommend to go read about it on their website. The service here makes you feel like an important customer. Even when you order take out. They are fast and efficient. Ample, ample room especially for NYC. The pizza is delicious. The traditional slice has a subtle sauce which works together with the cheese. They went a little to heavy on the basil for the Margherita but I still enjoyed it. Takeout comes with Parmesan and crushed pepper. And let me tell you, the best Parmesan and crushed pepper I've ever had. NO SLICES btw

Had to stop in here. Stopped in on a Friday night, busy as heck. I was able to get a seat at the bar. All I wanted was a pie. The service was fast, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere and interior was beautiful. Absolutely stunning on the. The menu looked great but I was there for the pie. Straight up pie. The pizza was very very good. Love the lightly char crust and flavorful sauce. High quality cheese and pepperonis. John's of Bleeker is better. But this is still ultra delicious pizza. Definitely go to this place! I will be back!

The pizza was very good. It was not too soft or floury, the crust was so good, I usually don’t eat crust. Service was good, nothing extraordinary, but it is a busy place. It had a great atmosphere and inside a beautiful building. Don’t let the outside appearance fool you. I think it’s a must when in NYC.

Beautiful place! Only my third time ever. Good tasting pizza, but a little too much flop IMO. We asked for "thin and crispy" and server said "that's the only way we make em", but still came out too soft if you ask me. Calamari was very good. Good service overall. Host was fantastic, better than server. Pricey of course because of location. Beers are totally overpriced. Pizza toppings overpriced. Still, worth a visit at least once if visiting Times Square. I still prefer the Bleeker St. restaurant because the pies are crispier. I know technically they're not the same ownership because of the family split and lawsuits, but obviously there's a shared history and recipes. You say "whole pies", I say "no slices".

Apparently at one time John's on Bleecker and the John's on Broadway were part of the same store but they are separate now. Yet they use the same coal fire way of making their pizza. Went in for lunch on a late afternoon thurs. Not busy. Got seated right away. Great ambiance. Was at one time a church. Ordered a single Caesar salad that we shared. And one 6-slice half cheese/half pepperoni pie (they still charge full amount for a topping despite only having it on half the pie). The salad was phenomenal. Perhaps one of the best salads ever had. Fresh romaine lettuce Caesar dressing, croutons and parmesan. Incredible. I would have just come here for the salad. Pizza came out fairly quick, actually while we're still eating our salad. The pizza looked very similar to the pizza at John's on Bleeckers but didn't have the same flavor or char. This John's crust wasn't cooked long enough to get that classic New York char on the bottom. See pic. Cheese was flavorful but again not quite as good as the other John's. Pepperoni was excellent had a bit more spice. Despite these nitpick things the pizza overall was very good with Classic NY style flavor & texture. Overall I recommend stopping in and trying it out particularly if you're looking for a dining-in/ served experience. If you're looking for just a quick New York slice this isn't the place.
