You know a restaurant is beyond great when you can take your 100 year old grandmother for her first Japanese cuisine experience and a father who is an extremely picky eater and they both devour everything on their plates. Our server, like a master surgeon, was able to quickly provided a great introduction to the world of Japanese cuisine by cutting away items off the menu that he new would not be pleasing to my families tastebuds. I am extremely glad we decided to celebrate my dad's birthday here and I can not wait to go back.

Not your typical Americanized Japanese. Really good food with excellent service!

Atmosphere was elegantly classic Japanese but not pretentious. Service was friendly and efficient but not obsequiously so. Food was beautifully presented and scrumptious. The wagyu beef was tougher than expected. Tasty though. The homemade tofu was really something to try. The sashimi was excellent. Pricey no question. But beautiful and delicious. Go try.

We had a meal here the evening before our wedding and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The restaurant was very clean and the staff were great. One guy in particular served us on the 3rd June around 7pm(ish) and he was great. So sorry we can't remember his name. He gave a good clear breakdown of the food and what we would perhaps like. I asked if there was chicken Teriyaki and he advised no and served me Yakitori Ju (which was AMAZING!!!). When ordering drinks he gave his opinion on a cocktail which ultimately was exactly what I liked. Quality food and service, thank you for having us!. Arigato (^_^)

Took my cousin for her birthday. We both had the mini Kaisen don set and split a large homemade tofu. The tofu texture was almost like custard. It was so delicious! Our Kaisen don set was also so delicious, from the creamy egg custard, just right soba and the sashimi pieces were all so tasty and delicious! Will definitely go back again! Our server, Freddy, was a terrific waiter! FYI, this is a no-tipping restaurant!

Their food is delicious.. Raw product is fresh, such as salmon from Alaska, Chimahoke fish from Baring Sea... Their service is good.. The only thing which I don't like in Ootoya is to wait a long line....

Best authentic Japanese comfort food - dishes have unique flavors and ingredients that are truly crafted with genuine Japanese touch. This restaurant exemplifies what a real Japanese meal should taste like. Their handmade sauces, tofu, soba can't be beat especially for the price.

After reading many reviews, my expectations for Ootoya were high...could I get a seat right away at the bar at 6PM on a Friday? Would the food, service, and ambiance really be as fabulous as I hoped? Yes! and then some. I like to think I know my way around Japanese restaurants, and Ootoya is now my go to place when I'm in NYC. <3

This is a better Ootoya location. The service was wonderful as the other locations in the City although they forgot our credit card for a very long time. The place offers omakase at this location, which has a location only menu. There is a counter seating all the way in the back which is fun for after work. Food is decent, and I will not brag about it.

This place is my go-to comfort Japanese food. You can't go wrong with anything you order here. I especially liked the salmon nabe soup and the pork katsu. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, try the matcha curry with chicken thigh! The matcha curry is mild. Not your typical curry but the chicken thigh was cooked to perfection. Crispy skin and tender meat. Highly recommend!

Always loved Ootoya but they have kind of slipped recently. Service was a little slow. Miso soup was cold and bathroom wasn't as clean as it usually is. Surprising for a Japanese restaurant. But will come back.

Will definitely come back!! I loved the dessert! Not too sweet. Perfect miso soup. First time eating crunchy sushi. They kept falling apart but that was ok. The yuzu cocktail was a very pleasant surprise. I loved the politeness of the stuff, it felt like the authentic Japanese service.

In summary: we loved everything we ate. We also ordered too much and ate a bit too much. But, too much of a good thing isn’t bad. We strongly recommend the cod.

I had the Bara Charashi Don which I really enjoyed. The fish is decently fresh. Some items on their menu seemed overpriced, for example, their crispy rice nigiri. For appetizers, we tried the Karaage, Signature Chili Shrimp Gyoza Dumplings, and some torched salmon nigiri. The appetizers were all good and tasty, but nothing too special. Of the ones we tried, our favorite was the Chili Shrimp Gyozas. Their dessert is pretty food for the price, and if their mochi is on the menu, I highly recommend you try it if you want a dessert that has a subtle sweetness. Their alcohol menu also has some great options. We loved all the drinks we tried!

An exceptional meal. We came in for a casual lunch and were wowed the moment we stepped in. Great service and ambience. The Japanese butterfish bento I ordered was aromatic and delicious - I added on the chawanmushi as well. Super delicate. Highly recommended.

Ootoya Chelsea provided a wonderful backdrop for our mixed group dinner. The service was commendable and the food arrived hot and swiftly, a sure sign of well-synchronized kitchen magic. The star of the show was their fresh sashimi. My friends were simply enamored by the array of beautifully cut, melt-in-your-mouth morsels of seafood. It was clear Ootoya Chelsea didn’t skimp on the quality of their ingredients. For me, the standout was the hot pot, specifically the Kaasan Ni. Picture a breaded and deep-fried chicken cutlet and onion, garnished with Japanese grated radish and a poached egg, all swimming in a delicately flavored soy sauce broth. It was akin to a Japanese version of a hearty onion soup and left me satisfyingly full. Ootoya Chelsea offers a delightful dining experience with delicious food and good service. It's a perfect place to satisfy your Japanese cuisine cravings and share a meal with friends or family.
