Fantastic uber-fresh sushi 🍣 and wonderful efficient service make this place my #1 for sushi! Excellent quality!
I got here when it opened and within 35 minutes, the restaurant was completely filled. I highly recommend Japonica!
It was very good I went on Halloween with my brother and the service was great and the food also great It was a great experience
This was a restaurant my family and I frequented in the 90s since we knew the Japanese owners. It is very nostalgic. Happy to see it’s still thriving in spite of all of changes in the neighborhood. I dine here when I’m in the NYU area for events and the sushi and sashimi pieces and assortment are still as superior as I remember it.
It is very old school but that’s not always up peoples alley with all of these new trendy Japanese restaurants in nyc.

The fish is always fresh here. The technique for making sushi and other Japanese food itens is pretty much as good as it gets. Highly recommended
This was our first time coming to Japonica and it was a mother's day lunch/dinner for 4. The seating was intimate, the service was excellent & the food perfect. There are seasonal options and regular favorites when you think of sushi/sashimi. This location is ideal for small groups (2-6) or if you're on your own. From appetizers to dessert, we were absolutely pleased. I look forward to returning.
The food was great. Sushi was very fresh and service was good. I got a Bento box and every item was delicious and fresh. If you care about the atmosphere for a Saturday night, it was missing a vibe. Even though closing time was at 10, they were wrapping it up about 9:20.
Friendly service. First visit in quite a while, ate outside during the pandemic and they have a nice set up, sturdy shelter and electric heaters. I had the sushi deluxe which was pretty good and my friend had the bento dinner, which he enjoyed. I will definitely be back to give it another try.
The sushi is really amazing here, it’s just that it’s very expensive. It’s a cute little place and I would recommend it. For lunch they have lunch specials not the cheapest lunch special you can find, but I would definitely want to go here again because everything looking beautiful and fresh. There’s some things on the menu that I’ve probably never seen before in a Japanese menu that’s what makes this place unique, and authentic.
Amazing small restaurant who do not take reservations, walk-ins only. I have been here with my girlfriend, sat at the sushi bar table. The overall experience was fantastic: great food and great service. Paid 110$ + tip for two persons with hot sake and a lot of sushi, rolls and a snow crab roll. Note to the owner: give Mr. Alex a raise, he deserves it!
I've been eating here since the early 90s, it was unbelievable quality for 30 years. Since then, they have gotten new owners and the quality has dropped quite a lot. But it's still one of the best Japanese restaurants in New Your and certainly the best in the neighborhood.
Nice, chill spot for reasonably priced sushi given the area. I would recommend this restaurant to someone looking for all of the above.

I've been eating at Japonica since the early 90s, it was always outstanding in every way, they were always above and beyond. But now they have new owners and I'm sad to say I can't say they are above and beyond but they are still far above most Japanese restaurants. There chirashi was legendary, but now its just ok. They still have some other amazing things to offer but you have to discover them for yourself, sometimes it's hit or miss. Overall its still a nice place to eat and one of the best in the neighborhood.
Had a lovely meal here ! I got the dinner set with tempura soba and yellowtail roll that came with a delicious assortment of vegetarian sides. Love the straightforward service and simple, classic interior as well. Cant wait to come here again :)
Amazing place the food is delicious. I enjoyed the California roll sushi and the broiled eel on the bed of rice. Will come back for sure.
This is the friendliest sushi place you can go to. Reasonably priced for the food they offer. Sushi is always very good. We love their tomato-salmon and Snow Crab Hand roll. Ultra sushi is the best value chef's choice you can get.
Portions were rather small for the cost. Don't be fooled by bowls of edamame and rice. Sushi restaurants are about the fish, and that's what you're paying for.
