Hands down the best sushi experience I've had in NYC. Toshio is incredible. Oona is amazing. The sushi is just beyond compare as well. If you're not satisfied, sushi isn't for you.

Tanoshi is my favorite traditional omakase (chef's choice) sushi bar in the entire city. And that's a BOLD statement. This 12 seater sushi bar only has 3 seatings per night, and you need to make the reservation at least 2 weeks in advance, and it's SO WORTH IT. Each piece of sushi is specially prepared just for you in front of you. And then the next piece isn't prepared until you've finished the piece before -- seriously so fresh and such great quality, each piece melts in your mouth. I've been to Tanoshi at least 8 times by this point, and it has never disappointed. The Slightly Seared King Salmon, Amberjack with Cherry Blossom Leaf, Triple X (uni + ikura + quail egg combo) are my absolute favorites! The Seared Salmon with Ponzu appetizer and their super rich Miso Soup are amazing complements as well. 10 pieces of the highest quality sushi, half a roll plus a hand roll for ~$75 is pretty worth it in my books. Seriously in love with this place and already made a follow up reservation to try their "special" omakase for my birthday in two weeks. They say the special omakase includes fish ordered and shipped straight from Tsukiji Market in Japan!!!! CANNOT WAIT!

Favorites: Amberjack, Triple X

For a long time, Tanoshi maintained one of the most ridiculous reservation systems that I have ever heard of. Every day, a sign-up sheet was posted outside the restaurant for each of the three seatings. Simple enough, except for the fact that Tanoshi is located at 73rd and York Avenue - basically in the east river next to Manhattan. In all likelihood,

I know that NYC isn’t a gastronomic place but, this restaurant is one of the best Japanese that I’ve ever tried in USA. DEFINITELY A MUST! You should bring your drink and enjoy the meal. Just amazing

One of the best Asian restaurants in town. The lady behind the counter is always so nice and even though I treat myself here about once a month she remembers me! I always get the chicken Udon soup with a sticky bun and sushi rice in lotus leaf :) love you all a lot!

We enjoy to go out. Last night we came to this superb restaurant which we didn’t know before. We had a beautiful evening there with great meal and an efficient team and an impressive cook. We added this place in our phone list and we shall certainly visit again soon. We deeply recommend.

Hands down the best hand rolls around! I'd wait an hour to eat at this place. I've never been even slightly disappointed and everything always is consistently delicious. The texture of the rice, the freshness of the fish, the intimacy of the restaurant. Everything is perfect. Can not recommend enough! If you're in NY or even if you're not, make it a priority to go to Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar. Even if you see a line, just know it moves fast and it's worth it!

This may have been one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. For the price, especially when Omakase sets are 200-300/pp this is an incredible value. Just look at all the yummy treats Tanoshi Sushi serves. We will definitely be back.

This place is quite special. The sushi quality is absolutely amazing. Loved the omakase setup, chef was excellent at explaining what we were having, and the pace was good. Atmosphere was different, pop music and a lot of character. Very different from other sushi places that go for a sleek and polished look. Would highly recommend this place though. Am sure we will be back here! Special note, get the xxxl dish, it is the best.

Very different kind of sushi spot but it was great! They hand roll the sushi right in front of you and hand you the roll. You eat it immediately while it's crispy. They give you one by one. We are only in LA for a few days but we will be back!

Had a great omakase meal here and enjoyed everything from the varieties of dishes, the chefs, and the service. This is a small place seating 12 guests where chefs serve each piece of sushi as they make them. Reminded me of many of the restaurants in Japan. I liked the BYOB and then giving you a choice if a selection of drinking cups for it. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Make sure you're on time because serving starts promptly at the reserved time.
