On my continuing adventures and was looking for some place different...found it! Service was pretty good and the food was excellent. I can’t even spell or pronounce what I got, but it was basically a flour tortilla shaped like a sandal covered in cheese and a load and a half of cut up steak with two eggs on top. Delicious! The wife got a smothered quesadilla (lots of gooey cheese) with the pulled chicken and she enjoyed it. The grandkid got chicken tenders...a fairly common thing on any kid’s menu, however, these were NOT a common chicken tender. These are made in house and they were “yummy” (her word). Over all experience was excellent start to finish.
Admit I saw them on DDD, had to try and definately not disappointed. Had lunch first, tried the Huarache Chilango, the signature bean and cheese filled tortilla with asada and chorizo, smothered in queso. To die for. So full of flavor and well prepared. Came back a,few days later, for breakfast and the breakfast burritos were large and very delicious. Picked up a dozen, pork tamales to go (amazing, large, and very full of filling with a nice kick in the meat), plus so pan dulce and mixed pastries to go. Will be a regular stop now when I am in town, and definately my stop before heading back home.
This place is the real deal when it comes to Mexican Cusine. They consistently exceed my expectations for Mexican food in Hampton Roads. I love that it is not an upscale dining atmosphere, yet the food is excellent. Their Chipotle Guacamole and house hot sauces alone are worth the trip to OV. The Chile Verde is top-notch.
Best Mexican Food I’ve ever had on the East Coast and every time I visit Ocean View a trip to Jessy’s is a must. They have the best menudo I have ever eaten at a restaurant. If you’re in the Norfolk area, you must eat here!!
I have some objective opinions. The food was authentic and delicious! Didn't know until now that they were on DDD. Oceanview: No one greeted us and we had to wait for a hostess quite a while. The patio had a very strong cleaner odor that was initially hard to get over. Without saying much more about all that it was after all a dive and yes we are going back. Today we are headed to the Ghent location for Tamales to go!
This is a breakfast and lunch place. The staff is very nice and the food was very good. A real gem on the Norfolk coast.
Been to Jessy's ocean view twice. Excellent authentic mexican food. Start with chips a s salsa, not ordinary out of the bag chips
These are made fresh daily and they are crunchy and delish. Have had the chicken enchiladas, fantastic. Posole, thats a soup so delicious and comforting. Have the house Margarita, made with high end liquor a little pricey but sooo worth it!
my Navy daughter has been stationed here for almost 4 yrs and came across Jessy’s by recommendation of co worker- during our visit from Arizona we not only shopped the store but had some delicious food & very friendly service. Only thing I can recommend would be fresh flour tortillas.
I gladly drive from Williamsburg to go eat at Jessy's. If you want a fancy place go elsewhere. But, if you want outstanding Mexican food and genuine hospitality, give Jessy's a try. I bet you will go back if you do...
Both times I've been here I left happy:-) First time I had the Chile Verde and the second time Carne Asada Huaraches! The fresh corn tortillas are a plus. Not to many spots in the area do them. The Green and red salsa they have are bangin! Wash everything down with some Bohemia :-)
Ive veen here several times. I try to order something different each time. I'm no expert in Mexican Cuisine but I've always loved what I've gotten. This place stays packed during lunch time so get here early. The portions are large and I have a full belly everyone I leave. The prices are great too! I love stopping on the way out and getting a sweet bread.
This place overall has great food and is very authentic compared to most other restaurants of this type in the area. I'm not a big burrito fan but theirs are great. The only bad thing I've had was the quesadilla, which I hate to say, but it was one of the worst I've ever had. The tiny amount of cheese was a tough, hard lump.
Talk about the REAL THING! this place isn't fancy but the food is the best in 23518, the service is plenty friendly and the margaritas are awesome. HUGE portions, too. the best the best the best!
For the past several months, either my husband or mother or friends and I have gone there for either dinner or lunch and every, single time, excellent food with excellent prices. You also have the small "general" store, seasonal, out door dining, beer/bar drinkies & decent service. AND, the aroma as you walk in the place and you see the fresh baked goods for purchase and carry, love it!
If you want some authentic Mexican food, this is the place! It is truly hard to find excellent true Mexican but Jessy's has it! I have yet to order something I did love. The prices and service is excellent.
That isn't even the best part though! There is a market within the restaurant that has an excellent selection of Mexican foods and snacks. There is also a great selection of dried peppers which are usually very hard to find in standard grocery stores. They also have a butcher in the store with excellent prices and Mexican sausages!
I strongly suggest this place for the restaurant food and the market food!
The best Mexican food in the 757. This isn't an overpriced Taco Bell (like Plaza Azteca), this is serious food. They have everything you'd find in Mexico. The service is hit or miss, but whatever, the food is yummy. I have been going for years and I will continue to go back. Try the shrimp taco or the cheese enchiladas. Perfecto!
Delicioso. Being here in Norfolk for about 4 months, it is the first time I have encountered a Mexican style cuisine. It is very delicious and I would recommend it to any one who might be a little San Diego home sick. They also have a little store that has many Mexican brands and items that I thought I would never be able to find, and as an added bonus they also have pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread).
Ovdw. The foods great atmosphere terrible. They need a better heating system freezing inside.
Their fish tacos and queso guacamole are AMAZING!
UNDESCRIBABLY GOOD..... ...AND AUTHENTIC. I loved it, nothing in HR compares to this place, There's so much to see and try between the store, the bakery and the butchershop next door which you can visit while you wait for your food. Food was out fairly quick though, waitress came and found us......can't wait to go back, the baked goods we brought home never saw the light of day.
All true. Great food...go get some now.
There isn't a Mexican restaurant anywhere in Hampton Roads that even comes close to this place. Extremely fresh and as authentic as it gets. You will not be disappointed, unless of course you think Guads and Azteca have authentic food. You're not going to find a fancy light up bar or gaudy decorations ; but instead a well kept , low key joint that cares more about their service and most importantly their food.
Excellent!. The food is delicious and fresh, not a tex mex at all. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful especially for those not familiar with authentic Hispanic foods, such as myself! The prices are very reasonable. I would eat here 7 days a week if I could!
The real deal. I grew up in Arizona and have been to Mexico numerous times, and this is the real deal. You know that this place has the goods because when you walk in it is an eyesore with Univision playing in the background but the joint is still packed. The service is amicable enough and the space is functional and the food is presented in a straightforward manner. Never mind all that, this is where you go to chow down on amazing Mexican food. The portions are so generous that we always have take out. The fresh varieties of guacamole are a party for you mouth. If you want food that is authentic it doesn't get any better than this.
Amazing!!!!!! They have the best guacamole.
This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE place to eat. My husband and I have been here so many times it would be impossible to count. I've never had better Mexican food anywhere, and the queso guac is especially good. My husband thinks their steak and cheese tacos are the best, while I always get the chicken tostadas. We both agree that the fresh made salsa is better than anything you could buy in a jar or make at home, and what makes it better is that it's unlimited refills! I noticed some reviewers commented on the 'sketchy' atmosphere/hole in the wall ambience. I am a white female and have never felt unsafe here. If you don't like it, don't come--more food for me! It's OV, what do you expect? And honestly, they've recently renovated the place, and I think it's perfectly fine. If I had kids, I wouldn't think twice about taking them to Jessy's, even at 9 pm! Overall I am SO GLAD that we found this place, and we will continue to go and to recommend Jessy's to everyone we know.
Closest to SoCal Mexican Taste. Yep, this was pretty close and by far the best tasting mexican food we have in the area so far. Had the carne asada chimi, wife got the carnes asada burrito, shared the chips with guac/cheese. Even the shopping center felt like National City. Everyone was friendly and even the store next door felt like home. Place was full and understandably so. Good job!
I had the beef tounge beef cheek and chicken tostadas. All three were amazing. Simple and delicious, I will deffinitly be going back for more
Best Guacamole in Hampton Roads!. The VA Pilot awarded Jessy's the best guacamole. I had to try to see if they were correct. They definitely were on point on this one! What a filing lunch with quality food. I had the Cuban torta and it was loaded. I'm not mexican but I know what I like and this I like! Worth the drive, you will not be disappointed. Friendly staff that will not steer you wrong. Highly recommend!
A Guacamole Gem!. If they sold their guacamole by the tub, I'd still have to go back once a week. I love Jessy's Taqueria for their excellent food and the fact that they're tucked in a corner of my neighborhood, right across my favorite Italian restaurant. Their proximity helps when I always have a craving for guacamole. This will be a wonderful spot to go to once the months get warmer. Or, go all year round. That's what I do.
Holly crap. This the best Mexican food in the HR area. I had the chimichanga with steak, it was very flavorful. They use fresh ingredients. They rice and beans are excellent. You can't beat the prices. Don't miss this place. Coming soon: The Mega Burrito.
Love It. I am always hesitant to try resteraunts in ocean view ,well because it's ocean view. A friend told me about Jessy's and now we go there once/twice a month if not more. I usually get the shredded beef tacos and guac (the guac is awesome), but my husband has tried a number of things and we are both always satisfied. It's not that tex-mex crap but more authentic. It seems as though they actually care about the food they serve! The employees are always super nice and the place is always clean. I've never gone there to watch football on their nice tv's but probably will consider if we don't get nfl ticket. Plus for the time being they will give you 10% if you give them a review on yelp, not that it is expensive in the first place.
This place is amazing. It's really the best! Anyone who argues that any other place is better is absolutely ignorant. I uploaded a picture for what I think is every menu item. Enjoy. I hope the menu helps.
We have lived in the area for 3 years and could not find anything close to the food back home (we are Mexican and lived in South Texas) but Jessy's really took us back home.
The real deal!!!! I moved here from Chicago about 4 years ago and I tell you I have seen it grow to the place it is the place it is today. I am Mexican and this is the real deal. It is a treat for me when I go in and eat their food. I have told so many people about this place and will continue on doing so. Amazing Amazing Amazing!!!! No other restaurant like this in Hampton Roads.
Amazing!!!!!!!. First off, if you want "real" mexican food this is the spot for you! I have never wrote a review before but stand by this place enough to defend it! Now it is NOT fancy nor getto! The menu isn't large but every must have is there! The staff is very friendly and speak fluent english! Also it is have a store for seasoning, breads, and authentic carne asada and cheese that you cannot get from american stores!!!!! So if you are looking for that this is a plus for me! The food is perfect as is their guac!!!!! I eat there ALOT
Good food. Freshly prepared from good ingredients. Friendly folks and good value. Good iced tea!
Interesting.... I really liked it. The place really does make you feel like you're in another country. It's a straight-up hole-in-the-wall, but pretty cool in it's own way. Great happy hour prices on the coronita's. Really good guacamole, pico, and salsa. The enchiladas verde were very good, the lamb flautas were good but only slightly warm inside, black beans were really good too. Took some tres leches cake and flan home that were both delicious. They were out of the fish tacos when I was there, so I'm planning on returning to try those.
I'm not typically a fan of Mexican food at all but after hearing great things, I gave it a try. The food is amazing- fresh, authentic & delicious! Great portions, nice staff...it's the only Mexican I'll eat now!
I am a SD native but have lived in VB and Norfolk for three years now -- I am happy to announce that I done being disappointed by HR Mexican food - finished! I have found my fix. Jessy's IS THE REAL DEAL.
HEAVEN. Anyone who says this isn't like a Mexican restaurant must stay in the posh resort cities. This is exactly like the cantinas and taquerias over the border (minus the spits of adobada but I'm not complaining.) First...they serve TORTAS! What Americanized Mexican restaurant around here serves those? The bread is AMAZING. This is the real deal. Anyone from California who is missing the local taco shop should come here. AWESOME. AWESOME. They have homemade Horchata, breakfast burritos. The only thing I didn't like was the salsa with the chips and salsa. Other than that, perfection. I ate a whole plate of carnitas with fresh-made guacamole. The carnitas had the pork skin and all.
Afterwards, i went to the market next door and they prepared Carne Asada meat for me and had the full range of spices for a reasonable price.
I'm never eating Mexican food anywhere else in this area.
Great Place, Great Service. The food at Jessy's is not only fresh, but sooo good. They service was fast and great. I will be a return customer.
Best Mexican Food in Hampton Roads. Not fancy, but authentic, fresh, outstanding food.
Not the typical Hampton Roads Mexican restaurant, where everyone has the same exact menu.
Great flavors. Hearty portions. Unique menu items.
Great customer service. Staff is very friendly, and helpful if you have questions about the menu.
I recommend highly for a relaxed, very casual outing where the focus is the quality of the food in a friendly setting.
A real find in the view. We LOVE this place, I esp love ANYTHING with the green sauce usually opting for the enchilladas verdes or carne asada. The salsa and drinks (aguas or latin beers) are also delish. They also have a grocery store in the back that includes a bakery, butcher shop and a ton of kitchy gifts (lucha libre masks or mexican soccer jerseys anyone?) If you are tired of fake mexican and mediocre food head to Jessys and get an authentic taste of mexico!
Great place.. Truely Awesome. A treasure in OV . Who would of known?
Seems Pretty Authentic. Good stuff here, even the menu is in spanish.
SERIOUSLY, THIS IS THE BEST. Jessy's is straight up REAL Mexican food...they are not playing. I do wish there were a little more "ambience" because then I would eat there CONSTANTLY. However, I swear that this is the best Mexican food if you are interested in true flavor not the random lame Mexican food you get elsewhere. My husband would like for me to say that this is very different from your "Tex-Mex," Taco Bell so leave your expectations at the door and prepare yourself for a culinary voyage into something even better. I'd love them to doll it up a bit but not at the expense of the delicious sopes, arrachera, chorizo tacos, and more.
Buen provecho!
For Norfolk, this is Mexican food nirvana. As the state of Mexican food in HR is generally awful, I am always on the look for a solution to my TexMex jones. Jessy's fits the bill perfectly. Great menu, with a full range from breakfast (huevos rancheros, chorizo con con huevos, all served with hot flour tortillas), tortas (hot sandwiches with a variety of fillings -- steak, pork carnitas, milanesa) and a full range of enchiladas -- mole to green. I chose the green -- house made corn tortillas, wrapped around shredded stewed chicken, and covered with a tomatillo based green sauce, grated queso asadero, and mexican crema (halfway between sour cream, and creme fraiche). Drinks include the classic mexican choices -- jamaica, tamarindo, and horchata. Everything in ths place (except the flour tortillas) is made here -- including the salsas, a fairly mild jalapeno based sauce with no tomatoes, and a spicer chile arbol. Even the excellently flavored frijoles refritos are made from scratch. Jessy's is food prepared with love and passion, and if comes through in every mouthful.
