i eat at Nigels very often. they have too many good dishes to only choose one, and the customer service is par! i usually enjoy anything that involves a burger :)
I had the whiskey shrimp with sweet corn, potato and chorizo. The dish was saucy, came with a buttery toasted half bagguette and the whole lot was delicious. I washed it all down with some sweet tea and it was, oh my gosh good.
You know it's good when the kid's meal is delicious! Everything we had was fried but it was piping hot, crispy, and delicious! If we live here, this would be a regular haunt for us. Good thing for our waistlines we don't :) if you're in this neck of the woods, Nigel's is a great bet (and family friendly too!).
Great food, but I wish they would do pick up orders. I would eat from there everyday, but I don't have time for the long wait. There is a character minimum for reviews. Dumb.
My husband and I have been to a lot of places in the area and none can hold a candle to Nigel's. We had the fried green tomatoes and they were by far the best thing we've had in our vacation. I would recommend visiting this place if you're anywhere close.
Walked in at 6PM and there were only tables for 4 left. The hostess asked if I would like to sit at the bar. Went there and was almost immediately asked what I wanted to drink. Got the shrimp and grits for dinner along with fried oysters. Gravy was better than mine. Real good food, friendly attitude, doesn't get much better.
So good. We had the Geechie wings, low country ravioli, chicken and biscuits, shrimp and scallops, and meat (pork tenderloin chops) and three. We loved it. Definitely Southern comfort food. Fresh seafood.
Hotel clerk recommended this local restaurant, Zomato confirmed or we likely would have gone on. Lots of different dishes. We shared three, all good. Enjoyed the ample portions of low country ravioli, chicken biscuit (sort of pot pie), & tasty wings. A winner for local.
Love the geechie wings, shrimp & grits, seafood ravioli and low country ravioli.....the cool aid is nostalgic.....I most definitely recommend this spot.
My friends checked in at Nigel's... I just read and article on Nigel's... Hey, Steve is at Nigel's... Babe, did you know Nigel's is right by our house?? That's how it started. I saw a couple of friends checked in on Facebook then browsing I found an article or two. Then when I finally looked it up, they are right around the corner from us. Nigel's is tucked into the end of a shopping center on Ashley Phosphate. It's a small space packed full of good food and love! The first time we tried there was a 45 minute wait and we passed. The next time, we got right in. There is just something about basic, perfectly cooked no frills food. I Could have eaten every piece of fried chicken in the house! The service was wonderful and the food was like being at Granny's.
Great food, hearty and filling, real southern food without all the frills that just get in the way. Never had bad service despite showing with 12 close friends. The restaurant is small, but cozy. The foods the thing here. Want ambiance get a subway and sit by the river.
Wednesday night was music night with live music, just made the night better. My favorite restaurant in Charleston.
First time to visit Nigels. Will definitely dine there again. We did have to wait about thirty minutes. Well worth the wait! The staff were friendly. The owner, Louise, was charming and very attentive to her customers. My praise also goes to the chef's. The food was incredibly good. Thank you all for a lovely dinner. See you soon. Five Stars well deserved.

Dinner out. It was a late mother's day dinner and I picked where I wanted to go. The food was great! Our waitress was the owner's daughter and she knew the menu and had a great attitude. We had the geechie wings, delicious. Crispy and hot....and the sauce was Devine. I had the crab and shrimp ravioli and my husband had the seafood platter. Everything was cooked to perfection. My daughter had a corndog and fries. She loved them. We will be going back again, very soon. The atmosphere was really inviting and cozy. You won't go wrong eating here.
Southern Goods. The first time I drove past Nigel's I was uncertain of the quality of food that could be produced at such an establishment, but I have to say, it was not bad.
Times eaten there: 2
Average Seating time: 5 minutes
Atmosphere: Crowded and a little damp
Decoration: Rustic Tex-Mex molding, but painted over.(Tiny cheap pictures of Charleston mounted on walls)
Staff: Friendly, but overwhelmed
Food: 3.5 out of 5
Come hungry!. We wanted to share Charleston soul food with our visiting family, this is the place!! The dishes are tasty and servings copious. The fried fish wasn't greasy, the gumbo had enough heat, the okra soup, fried cabbage, grits, black eye fried rice all very delicious and not part of our usual cuisine but very much enjoyed by all, kids too. I prefer cooking at home because the cost/quality of dishes leaves much to be desired, but next time I go to Nigel's I will try the oyster stew.
Above average. Yum.. Reminds me of momma dukes house. Sunday dinners and home cooking. Food made with love. Excellent friendly service. A great experience.
Can't imagine why this place is recommended
Incredibly slow service on a Thursday night
Had to remind waitress what I ordered and ask where it was
They seem very pretentious
Hush puppies chewy and bland
Forgot my salad
Fish ravioli was good however
Had a three seafood combo with peas and carrots and fried pickled okra. The scallops, oysters and shrimp were perfectly fried, and not greasy at all. Okra was different, but definitely good. Give the peas and carrots a miss; they were mushy and not fresh. I had no complaints about the speed of service at all. If you're in the neighborhood, you must stop by.
Sorry about your experience. However I would like to take the time to address your claim. Yes I was upset about my employee not following our policy, but he was not mistreated. He told you that we did in fact tell you that we only accepted those coupons for dine in only. Even though my employee and I are good friends (which we played pool and drank a couple of beers that night) he understood what I was saying. He also stated the only reason he was trying to change our policy because of your situation. In fact even though it wouldn't let your coupon go through I assisted him so that it would even though your husband called in the order for you. You were very nice at the bar so I didn't think you were trying to get over on him so I won't say that but we have policies in place for a reason. My employees know what they are and they let the customer s know. Thank you but please don't paint part of a picture. Thank you
Great Soul Food. What a great place, The Chicken and Biscuits is to die for! If you like Southern one meat three then this place takes it to the max. I would go travel back to Charleston just to eat at Nigel's again!
Went last night after seeing there had been good ratings about this place, and was very pleased we did! First off, the waitress greeted us and was very knowledgeable of the menu and history of the restaurant. My husband ordered the chicken and bisquits (which was described as an inside out chicken pot. It was to die for!! I had the country fried steak with collards and mac and cheese. The steak was so tender and juicy with a perfectly crisp breading and gravy. I definitely recommend this place to others craving amazing soul food!
Thank you for the great service and amazing food. I had the pork chops and my wife had the country fried steak. Don't tell my mom but it's better than her's. Please everyone, do yourself a favor and come here.
Food was great but the service needed improving
This place is absolutely amazing. The food is great and so is the service. you have to go to Nigels.
OMG I travel all over and have eaten in many 5 star restaurants. The food & the service in this place is ubelievable. I will be sure to come again next time I am in the area!
This is one of the few places where the food AND service are excellent! The geechie wings are the bomb!
Nigel's is a great little restaurant and truly is a diamond in the rough. All of the food tasted fresh and made to order. It is kind of hidden but they had great food and service and I reccomend it to anyone who wants some southern soul food. We had the gumbo and a burger which were both phenomenal.
Fantastic Find!. My husband and I were travelling through the area and saw this place well reviewed on Urban Spoon. We were not disappointed. Seated quickly. Friendly wait staff. Great prices. Delicious food. My husband doesn't even like grits and he went for the grits 'n gravy and loved it. I had mac 'n cheese, bacon flavored lima beans and crab cakes. I even ordered up some superbly mixed fruit punch Kool-Aid that brought me back to many a fun summer as a kid. If this place was anywhere near where we live, we'd be eating there constantly. Don't miss it!
True to their word. Wow, what can i say!!! The food and the people are great. The owners take the time to every table and ask you how is everthing!!! That. Says alot about owners and the ppl that work for them. I/we highly recommend. Them. If u go u will not be disappointed. You will just come back to try more of their good food. Live jazz on Wednesday s to boot. Try it you'll like it!!
This was an unexpected delight. We found this incredible place on Urban Spoon. The service was great, the food was better. If you love HOME cooked food this is the place to go.
Perfect food that hits the spot just right, no need to go downtown, local gem that's close to pretty much everywhere.
Thank you. Thanks once again everyone. We here at Nigels take pride in every thing we do. Yes we are far from perfect but we try our best to be. Every dish is pepared fresh and with love, so when we get busy it might take a little time. I know me myself would rather have fresh hot food with a wait rather than fast food thats been sitting all day. With that being said to anyone who loves fresh hot food come and see us anytime. To those who like to rush, there are fast-food restaurants that would love your buss. cause we don't want it. Thanks once again to everyone and we here at Nigels love you.
Loved It. I'm a marine that just got home from Uganda. I've been to Nigel's 3 times in the last week. I also was there when the group of 12 came in. Come on guys give it a break. you didn't wait 20 mi for drinks. The server (the tall young lady) waited for the rest of your friends to come in to get your drinks. Your food didn't take that long maybe 45 minutes but noway 1 hour and a half. You all ate your food and the only reason any of you complained was because of the tall guy acting an ass. The wait was not that bad, I had the porkchops, mac and fried cabbage. It was way better than any I have had anywhere else. I have been around the world. If you all ordered when you came in instead of slowly adding people bit by bit, your food probably would have came out in a descent amount of time. Grow up and also everyone could see that your getting your friends to join urbanspoon to trash this great establishment. It's a good restaurant with really good food so stop acting childish and give it another go. That's why good food places are hard to find because idiots give bad reviews because they didn't get their way so they look for revenge. I have a feeling you and your friends won't be able to do anything to this place. I heard about in Uganda and another friend talked about it and he just came in from Afghanistan. Some other friends who where stationed in Langley who are in the Air Force also recommended it. Its a winner. I loved the atmosphere, the food and the service.
Amazing food, great atmosphere, and did I mention the food is amazing? Service is great - servers are very friendly and welcoming. Food will take a little longer than some other places, but that's because it's made to order, not sitting under a warmer all day. And guess what? It's well worth the wait. Proud to have such a great local restaurant so close to home!
I personally love the Black and Blue burger, but have liked everything I've tried there so far. Check them out!
Nigel's is great. Family owned and the kind of place you love to see succeed! Locals making food for locals! Seafood platter rocks and portions are huge. Collards are a must.
GREAT FOOD, GREAT SERVICE. I discovered Nigel's Good Food about a year and a half ago...about two months after they opened their doors. Without exageration, in the year and a half since I discovered their existence, my husband and I have dined at this establishment no less than once per week. If we dont stop in, it means we are out of town. Nigel's is THAT place.
The food is outstanding. I live for their shrimp and grits. The turkey wings are delicious, the cabbage is outstanding, and my husband LOVES their ribeye steak. The Geechie wings are to die for, and if you ever get a taste of a Thelma's you're hooked for life!
While the food is outstanding, the thing that has kept us coming back to Nigel's Good Food is the outstanding service and their committment to quality. As a business owner, I understand the importance of treating both customers and employees well. When employees and customers are happy, business thrives. Upon discovering Nigel's my husband and I did not know Nigel or his wife Louise from Adam's house cat. We were immediately impressed with how personable they were. They would sit and talk to us EVERY time we came in, and a year and a half later, no matter how busy of an evening they are having, when Nigel and Louise walk in the door and see us having dinner, they stop to talk. Not just wave hello, but they stop to TALK.
I can HONESTLY say that I have NEVER had a bad experience with service at Nigel's. NEVER. The staff at this restaurant has GOT to be the absolute best in town. Many of them now know our order without us having to give it, and Dell, Jermaine, Mr. Bill....THE ENTIRE STAFF treats us like royalty when we are there. We even have a special table (they will laugh if any of them read this), that they try to seat us at whenever we stop in. The staff here is phenomenal!
Prior to posting my review, I read a negative review from a customer who complained that it took 20 minutes for him to get his drink at lunch time, then his order took forever, causing him to be late returning to work. While this is really unfortunate (if the situation did indeed happen as he described), I have to just say that this has NEVER happened to us, and I've never witnessed it happen to anyone else....and my husband and I dine at Nigel's ALOT. I guess I'm confused at this person's post. Most lunch breaks are an hour. If it took 20 minutes to get your drink, wouldnt it make sense to pay for your drink and run across the street to Burger King and grab a whopper so you could make it back to work on time? Use better judgement.
Anyway....I just wanted to say....if you live in the area or if you are just visiting Charleston, GO TO NIGEL'S (I HIGHLY recommend the shrimp and grits)!! It is a must have, and you wont regret it!!!!
I've eaten there.. food Is delicious.. The wait is a bit of problem.. Nothing I can't fix thou.. I'm a chef at a high volume hotel..I've been doing it for quite some time and I'm more than willing to lend a hand or even sit in on a busy night and show you guys some tricks of my trade.. Not looking for any compensation.. I'm just a great guy like that.. And don't mind helping out .. And would hope somebody would do the same for me should I ever need.. If interested contact me juancee1197@gmail.com.. Good luck and God bless
We thoroughly enjoyed Nigel's. There were six of us, two waitresses that's served us so well. Very clean and kid friendly. Shrimp and grits-yum! Shrimp
Po-boy-Yum! Hush puppies and Geechie wings-yum!
Good food but took 30 mins to get a togo order
Great food, great service. Had the shrimp & grits and it was excellent and priced reasonably.
Visted this place a few days ago and the shrimp and grits were awesome! Will be returning
AWESOME!!!. My husband and I had a late lunch at Nigel's today. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious! The fried items we ordered (seafood and chicken) were perfect. They were seasoned perfectly and crispy. I ordered macaroni and cheese and although I wouldn't tell her, it was almost as good as my Mama's! The french fries were big, skin on, and hot! The service was friendly, very efficient and sincere. We cannot wait to go back and try other things on the menu.
The name says it all.... The name says it all... I went tonight for the first time based on a recommendation from a co-worker. I had the chicken and biscuits which was listed as a "new" item on the menu... Large portion, reasonably priced, and was absolutely delicious... I will definitely be returning and am looking forward to trying some of the other menu items.
Good food, huge portions and excellent service. Nigel goes out of his way to make sure you have a great experience.
If you haven' t gone, go. You will not be disappointed.
Fantastic food, DELICIOUS She Crab soup, a nice atmosphere, and a friendly courteous staff all combine to give North Charleston the best restaurant on Ashley Phosphate. I can't wait to go back. I really can't say enough good about Nigel's Good Food.
Amazing!! Our server, Telayah, was great and the food was spactacular. The Alabama pulled pork sandwich is possibly the best on Earth. This is a definite repeat!!
Fantastic Food and Service!. Finally a quality sit down restaurant in the North Charleston corridor of Ashley Phosphate and Dorchester! My first trip was lunch with some co-workers. I had shrimp and grits with a side of collards. Out of this world good on both dishes! The collards were still a bit crisp rather than mushy which is just the way I like and seasoned to perfection. The shrimp gravy was to die for and the grits were the creamiest of all I've had in this area.
I was so happy with my first trip that I took my family the very next evening for dinner. I chose the meat and three which allows you to select a meat from a list of options and three sides of your choice. I picked fried chicken, mac & cheese, hush puppies, and okra stew. The fried chicken was light and crispy, not too heavily breaded so it was divine! The sides were all fantastic, especially the okra stew which was the best I've ever had!
The service here is top notch, very friendly and inviting. Nigel, Louise, and team have me hooked -- will definitely be back many many times!
DELICIOUS Southern Soul Food, as in the cuisine, but more importantly, actual food for your SOUL! Nigel's Fried Chicken + Mac & Cheese + Cornbread + Collard Greens is the perfect Meat & Three combination. Definitely a top 5 local gem in the greater Charleston area.
Omg!!! This. Place. Right. Here. I can't even describe how great the food is. Better than home cooking. No joke. I couldn't get a pic before the food was just about gone, lol. The ribs were sooooo good. Pork chops off the chain. All the sides were to die for.... And VERY affordable. Forget the high dollar restaurants downtown, Nigel's is where it's at!!
We got delivery after hearing raves about the good ol' Southern Home Cookin' here. I want to dine in to update later but for now I base it on our delivery. The chicken-fried steak was momworthy. Good gravy on it and the potatoes. A little skin in the potatoes lets you know they're real. Creamy, buttery, and perfect. The mac'n'cheese is better than assembly line but not as good as home-baked trays. I was missing the cheesy char on top. The sauce was tangy with Cheddar and quality cheeses, not just canned. Good, not great.
The red rice was the big disappointment. It was about an hour before closing so I have to guess it was the last of the batch, but it was totally dried out, almost but not quite burnt. The smoked sausage was all smoke, no sausage. The rice was so dry it fell into individual pieces. It was a lot, they filled the giant area below the steak, but more is not better when it's not good.
That said, the Geechie wings were spicy-sweet, sticky and saucy and well-cooked. And the lemon tea was bangin' with tangy flavor and is a must-order! The two together are a perfect lunch.
Pleasant atmosphere, bomb Pandora playlist going, and delicious soul food. The red rice is on-point, as is the fish sandwich & chicken wings. The waffles in the chix and waffles truly Belgian style, the sweetness is in rhe batter so you don't need syrup. Cornbread didn't even need butter.
The service is excellent, and our server was attentive, no matter how busy the place got, and there were a steady stream of customers
My first visit and the food was amazing!!! We all enjoyed it so much & our waitress which I forgot her name, but an older woman who was so nice and pleasant. The food was good & fresh. I will be back.
Food was piping hot when served. I ordered the Fish & Chips and got a real piece of fish not some breaded, battered and fried imitation fish. Service was good👍🏽Our waitress, Giovanni, was pleasant and she checked on us frequently. This is the place for some good down home cooking. Food is GOOD 💯😋
Drove in for a graduation from the Naval Nuclear Program from Texas and this place is off the hook good. When we come back we will be getting the fried pork chops again.
If you want real soul food cooked to perfection, look no further than Nigel's. Everything is well seasoned with being over salted. Fried chicken is a must. Crunchy and moist. You can't go wrong with any of the sides. Slap ya mama good? To some yes, but I do not have a death wish. 10 out of 10 will be back again. Ordered DoorDash so couldn't rate the service or atmosphere.
The food was excellent. Very few complaints. The side of collard greens didn't appear to be seasoned enough. I added some salt and pepper. Our party of 8 was well served, thanks to our server Casey. Everyone was satisfied with their food and the presentation was awesome. Too much to eat in a single sitting. The ambiance was great. Visiting the city and loving the food culture. The geechie wings was the family favorite😋🤌🏾.

It was pretty good. I had the whiting and they really give you a nice piece of fish. One of my friends had the chicken fried steak and she said it was very good but the potatoes were very thick when she put her fork in it. It almost crumbled like cornbread. Other than that the food was good. We did taste the wings which I liked. They remind me of KFC's honey barbecue wings which I loved place was very crowded. They do a good business. Only thing is they're not Open on Sundays and their meals just seems like a nice Sunday meal
Incredible food, friendly service, and great music. Everything was phenomenal, but I’ll be dreaming of the corn bread and chicken wings for the rest of time.
Nigel's Good Food has great food I'd say! This black owned restaurant gets my “food for the soul" stamp of approval! When I am in Charleston SC visiting, this will be a spot I'll be sure to have to visit!
-The fried shrimp and fish were cooked to perfection with great flavor.
-Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes were on point!
-Gumbo had very good flavor, plenty of seafood/sausage/chicken/veggies
-Hush Puppies were moist and seasonsed well
-The service was great and the staff was very friendly. There is good seating and a nice bar as well. Dine in and carry out as an option.

I am actually reviewing Nigel’s new space in Hanahan, SC. This is my first time trying out any of Nigel’s restaurants. What can I say? It didn’t disappoint. I went during the soft opening and it was ahhhmazing. The food was absolutely delicious. Full of flavor and it took me back to my childhood of eating my families cooking. The only negative thing I have to say is that I didn’t try this place earlier. Please, please do yourself a favor. Don’t hesitate in giving Nigel’s a try. That man puts pure love in his food and you can certainly taste it in every bite. His wife, Mrs. Louise came by the table to ask my friend and I how everything was. She was very kind and sweet, just a final touch to a wonderful experience. Thank you Nigel and Louise, you truly have something special.
Pictured is boneless pork chops, Mac & cheese, rice and gravy and of course corn bread which was to die for! 😋
Start your meal off with the whisky shrimp, you’ll thank Nigel later.
Our visit to Nigel's didn't disappoint at all. When we come to Charleston, we make sure to make a stop here. The service and food was exceptional today. Our server, Tim was excellent! He was very courteous and attentive. We had the pork chops with macaroni and cheese, collards white rice and gravy and red rice. Everything was seasoned properly. Can't wait to visit again.
Food here was excellent. Our server, Sheree was phenomenal. She was very attentive but not intrusive. We ordered the gechee wings to start. They were crispy and covered in a unique and flavorful sauce. Our food arrived shortly after and was hot and appealing. We ordered yams, corn bread and rice with our chicken. Needless to say, we had very little left over. We will be back here soon!
