We were just driving through on our way from New Orleans to Dallas and my boyfriend wanted one last taste of Louisiana. We stopped at Palace cafe and were greeted with a smile and some cornbread by Dee Dee, a wonderfully sweet and pleasant server who could tell we were't from around here. She guided us through the menu and recommended the calf livers, onion rings, and chicken fried steak. She said whatever we ordered would be good though, the chef had been cooking in that kitchen for 25 years. She was right. We had the chicken fried steak poboy, onion rings, side salad, and oyster and shrimp gumbo. All were simple, fresh, and delicious. Nothing fancy, just good food that tasted home cooked. And Dee Dee probably made everything taste better with her small town southern hospitality. We will stop here every time we drive through to say hello.
Great burgers and fries. Red beans and rice is excellent. Service is spotty sometimes. You may have to wait a little longer than you'd like but it's worth it.
Fabulous!. I have been stopping at The Palace for years. They have the best crawfish ettouffe in the world!
If you enjoy dining at chains, where the food is pre made and delivered on a truck to the restaurant, you may not understand the uniqueness and charm of this restaurant. I sugeest you eat elsewhere. But if you like relly good, old fashion hand prepared food, you MUST go to The Palace!
Classic and comfortable. You can't beat their club sandwich and veggie soup, it's also the only place I will order calves liver
The palace cafe exceeded my expectations. When you walk in its small and dark. The menu had a good variety. I got the crawfish platter. It came with fried crawfish tails, crawfish bisque, and crawfish étouffée and a salad. The service was great the food was great. I also had a piece of praline cheese cake for dessert which was also very good. I walked out of there stuffed. When you visit Opelousas Louisiana you have to visit The Palace Cafe.
Worth exiting I-49 at Opelousas to eat at the Palace Cafe. Not only is the food very delicious there is a lot of history associated with this restaurant. Third generation is now in charge. Several varieties of gumbo are served; I had the shrimp & okra which really hit the spot. This place is the real deal; get off the highway and get yourself some good home cooking.
Lovely Hometown Place w/ Personality. I had the pleasure of getting some chicken & oyster gumbo at teh Palace Cafe after Miss Tina chatted with everyone in the joint. Being from the North, we normally get irritated when not waited on within seconds. Miss Tina dispersed those thoughts completely. She chatted with my co-worker and I as if she'd known us all our lives. We learned the history of Palace Cafe saw baby pictures. This establishment is so unlike WDC and NYC places we are accustomed to. I wanted to stay there. A few more minutes and I would've taken off my shoes.
Miss Tina served us gumbo and recommended a spot for some boudin (it was good). I promised to send Miss Tina some scrapple ( I don't know what it is, but we eat it for breakfast up here in DC)
Opelousas is far away from my normal BTR and NO jaunts, but I have got to get back there,

Pretty good. I went there for breakfast. The service was excellent. I was impressed by the biscuits-I got a bacon and cheese biscuit (I am not an egg fan so I had them leave that off). As I am a carb fan I also got a side of grits-they were a little disappointing-kind of bland and there were a few lumps. Also got a side of hash browns and , at the suggestion of our waitress, added cheese to them. They were the shredded kind (I am partial to the chopped home fries kind) BUT, I have to say that with the cheese they were pretty darn good. My boyfriend got an omelette (he cannot remember what kind) and he said it was "all right". He is not quite as descriptive as I am. All in all, I would eat there again and I would like to try their lunch and dinner.
Really good chicken and sausage gumbo! Brisket is good as well as the ham or turkey swiss. Friendly service. Clean. Only reason I did 4 instead of 5 stars is ventilation it was just a tad smoky inside. Very easy to get to off I-49 - if you are passing through and looking for a local joint this would be one to put at the top of the list.

Such a great experience! Our server Alyssa was so friendly and the food was absolutely delicious! We had the fried catfish dinner with fried catfish, mashed potatoes, green beans and a dinner roll and the fried chicken cordon bleu sandwich with fries. I've never had fried catfish nearly this good EVER and the fried chicken cordon bleu sandwich was jam packed with so much flavor! We also had the St. Charles white chocolate latte which was also super amazing!! The atmosphere of this fine establishment was very relaxing and reminded us of New Orleans so much. We only wish that we could give more than five stars! Will be returning soon!
Also the little mason jars for the drink glasses were so adorable!!!

Older neat restaurant... excellent service and food, good price. Had the gumbo bowl... outstanding flavor. Definitely a small town feel like you are a neighbor... even when you are not.

Fantastic food! Absolutely love their Boudin, Egg and Cheese Biscuit they serve for breakfast; the BEST! So fresh and delicious! Get that with a cup of their delicious coffee and you will have a DELICIOUS breakfast to remember!! And the kind owners, especially the handsome young man, are always so friendly and appreciative of the business!!
