Duartes is a MUST stop. Was on business/vacation trip in California, Went to this place, outstanding food, with tons of history.
Had the Calarmari Steak Sandwich and the Olallieberry Pie,
very tasty home style food, with the West Coast history.
Highly recommend this place in Pescadero, Duartes Taven!!!

Awesome Tavern Food!. Had seen this on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and figured we'd stop in on our drive up the coast for lunch.

The place is busy for sure especially on a Saturday. We didn't wait long and we're seated at the counter facing the kitchen. I loved the old country feel of this place and you could tell a lot of the older locals have probably been coming here steady for years.

The service was great, the waitresses were very friendly and attentive and the food came out quickly but not all at once. We started with their soup of the day which was sweet corn chowder and OH MY... If you ever stop in and they have it, TRY IT! Best corn chowder I've had in my life! We stuck to the basics and had cold sandwiches and shared a plate of onion rings. The turkey was unbelievably fresh on my sandwich and the Onion rings were definitely some of the better ones I've had in my time. There were lots of other things that looked very appealing and if given the chance to stop in again, I certainly will!

If you need to grab a quick bite on your road trip or are even just a foodie looking to try great little places like this, be sure to stop in!!

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ABALONE. 1 calamari appetizer and 2 soups- $23
1 sauteed abalone entree- $40
2 abalone sandwiches- $50
a special birthday with the family- PRICELESS!

what is there to do in pescardaro? not too much but i guarantee a visit to duarte's is the answer for most people. it's one of those places for me i unfortunately don't get to visit to often so any visit is a visit to remember. and lucky for me it's one of the few places i know of you can find fresh abalone. it's hard to find so your definitely going to pay but you will love every minute of it.

this time around we got there around noon to find the place fairly empty but the bar was pretty busy. from the looks of pescadaro the people who live here seem to be drinkers. but with this great bar and historic place in town i can't blame them. i guess it is a good thing i don't live to close. we made reservations but we really didn't any. at noon on a monday i imagine most people would be at work.

we started with the calamari appetizer and 2 bowls of the green chile and artichoke soup. we got both half and half so we could try both of their best soups. both soups are good but the green chile has more flavor to it and really enhances the artichoke soup. the bowls of soup are $7.50 each but i still feel it's worth it. these are some really good soups. the free sourdough bread that comes served to the table pretty much makes up for it right there. the bread is so fresh and has the crispiest crust i have had in a very long time. the girl that brought us the bread told us to ask her if we needed more and we called her back for more pretty quickly. the deep fried calamari was $8.95 and is very reasonable for what you get. it was served with plenty of lemon and a marinara sauce. it included the tentacles and steak and was so very tender and fresh. pretty basic calamari recipe but they got it exactly right and my mom loved it and she has never really liked calamari before because it had been to tough. definitely not the case here

the big no brainer for my entree would be to order the abalone. we came this far and it's been way to long since i have even seen abalone. i ordered the abalone sandwich and fries. my dad not being a big seafood lover ordered the sandwich as well to my surprise. it's really simple! just lightly breaded abalone served on toasted sourdough bread. the best thing about it being so simple was being able to taste the true flavor of this succulent meat. the only thing i noticed about the sandwich was they had the toasted side of the bread flipped over so a simple flip and i was in business. not sure what the chef was thinking with that little goof! the very first bite i took i swear took me right back to the very first time i had this as a child. i asked for extra lemon and some tartar sauce for the occasional added flavor. the fries it was served with were really good as well. they seem to almost have a light breading on them which gave them a really tasty crunch. i would say $25 may seem like way too much to pay for a sandwich but once you understand how rare of a treat it is you'll understand. i was very impressed with the quality, size and way the kitchen prepared it. i will definitely be back to try abalone here in the very near future. my mom ordered the abalone plate special. at $40 it's expensive but once again your getting what you pay for. 3 good size pieces of abalone sauteed with lemon, butter, artichokes, mushrooms, spinach, mashed potatoes and a side of cauliflower. she had so much she was pretty stuffed after all of that and even had more than enough to share a piece with me. now what she got was a great combination with the sauce and fresh artichokes and mushrooms. so in all we all made perfect selections with what we ordered.

we finished off by sharing a slice of ollaileberry pie ala mode. it was a fairly huge slice and more than enough for the 3 of us to share after all we ate. the pie had a great sweetness to it and was very good but i have just never been a big fan of berries with seeds in them and that berry is so full of big seeds!! WOW!!

we used a coupon i found on their website for 10% off the entire meal. i highly recommend printing out a copy if you ever plan on eating here. if your gonna go to duarte's go big. get the things they do well and don't just get something you can find at any other restaurant. duarte's is a 5 yelp stars and i will tell everyone i know of this place and keep on coming back for as long as it's open..

Had a good Irish coffee, excellent onion rings and a decent BLT. What I liked was eating in history, the place had been there since 1890. Pretty cool.

Head down to Duarte’s Tavern for lunch. You have to order two things: Artichoke Soup and Ollalieberry Pie. The Artichoke Soup is creamy yet flavorful and not too heavy. But the sourdough bread that they serve with your meal is the perfect partner for it.
