Stumbled into this place accidentally but it was a really great lunch. The veggie burger was AWESOME, the beer selection was great, and it was a fun, cool vibe. Lots of young people and families so it was noisy in a good way.
On a recent trip to the Whole Foods on Callowhill, the GF and I stopped by Kite and Key for brunch. While Sabrina's is right around the corner, the huge lines are always a bother (unless you know how the proper protocol - wink, wink) and it's nice to know you still have a nice meal at this pub.
Fried Pickles ($6)
Chipotle dipping sauce
We started off with the 'frickles' and were surprised when they came out so huge! The ones I've previously tried at other places are usually thinly sliced and crisp like potato chips. But these were great in their own right.
The crisply fried batter provided a nice heft that wasn't the least bit greasy, with the pickles adding an expected vinegary tang. The chipotle dipping sauce was on point with a bit of smoky heat that didn't linger. In fact, I caught myself dipping my fork in the sauce. Sorry I'm not sorry!
Mixed Greens Salad with Chicken ($11.50)
Mixed greens, granny smith apples, goat cheese, roasted shallot & balsamic vinaigrette
The GF's salad was fresh and vibrant. The greens were well-dressed with a light vinaigrette. The grilled chicken was juicy and moist, with the tangy goat cheese and the julienned apples brightening up the dish.
Kite and Key Burger ($10.75)
1/2 pound ground Angus beef, cheddar cheese, bacon, fried shoestring onions, toasted brioche, fries
I requested the burger medium-rare and unfortunately, it came a bit over medium. Still, having previously had the burger here, I knew it would be well-seasoned enough that the patty would still be delicious.
The crisply fried bacon, the non-greasy, perfectly fried onions, and the abundant cheddar helped to added heft to the burger. The brioche housed the burger well despite the number of ingredients. The accompanying fries were lightly salted, thin, and crispy.
So if you're by Callowhill and were planning on heading to Sabrina's, don't hesitate to consider Kite and Key for brunch. And of course, if you're looking for some drinks and snacks at night, they've got you covered there as well!
I usually don't get vegetarian options to often, but I decided to go with the veggie burger. Overall it was pretty good. I did however have a great sour beer. I'd definitely go back for their draft list though.
I've never been here for food, so unfortunately I can't speak to that, but the beer list is pretty solid. It's a nice little neighborhood spot with lots of room at the bar and plenty of tables. Good for group hangs.
Love the diablo mussels and selection of craft beer. This small local pub is off the tourist path, but I've enjoyed coming here on business trips because it is a local joint. Makes you feel right at home. The beer menu is excellent and always rotating.
16 minute walk worth it. After a nice April day spent at Phila Art Museum, a 16 minute walk down Pennsylvania Ave to 19th then south to Callowhill was well worth it. Not far from the corner is the Kite and Key pub style restaurant. It was accompanied by my wife and our two preteen twin grand daughters. We were not disappointed. The menu offered nice selections and included a kids menu. The food was well prepared and the service was attentive and friendly. Personally, my favorite part was choosing which beer to enjoy after casual, relaxing day of art appreciation. The experience at the Kite and Key was enjoyable and well worth the short walk ( or $6 cab fare back ). vr
Sat Here On A Nice Saturday...TheRed DiAblo Mussels Are Awesome.
The menu wasn't the same as it shows on here. Basic pub food with maybe sometimes one or two flavors to make it a little more individual. I liked me food and beer selection. :)
SIDEWALK SPLENDER!!!. Driving down Callowhill St. last weekend I saw a huge crowd outside of this small looking store front. Slowing down and looking to see whats going on, I saw a number of small tables and chairs out on the sidewalk....full of people. I saw the name Kite & Key above the very cool bi-fold front doors and knew, I had to eat here soon. So....last night we had such an amazing visit to The Kite & Key. Impressed isn't even a close way to explain our experience. Our waiter was great and was so full of knowledge about the beers & the menu. We started off with the buffalo shrimp & calamari as our appetizers, both being very delicious and filling. I tried a beer that was new to me that was so tasteful, I had to have two...lol! The Goose Island - Summertime Kolsch was so rich and very cold, a pleasure to drink. After looking at the menu I knew for me there was only one choice for dinner. YES.....the MUSSELS, They have four choices of sauces in which your mussels are cooked and served. I choose the Sweet Thai Chili Mussels, this meal was 100% AMAZING! A huge bowl of mussels with 3 pieces of crusty bread to help soak up the luscious broth that accompanies the mussels. I am not sure of the count, but I know I had more than 30 in that bowl. This is a spot even though I don't live super close to the philly area, I will be making this trip again & again! Thank you Kite & Key for a wonderful Saturday night in the city!
Had the mussels red diablo - great! Had the bar man make us brandy old fashions sweet (from WI) and they did it justice.
Good value and nice selection of beer!
A Funky Menu. Awesome beer selection... I highly recommend the Thai mussles. The food menu is a little funky-- ie. a BLT with Pork Belly but when I inquired about skipping the pork belly I was told that it would be a very dull sandwich. I appreciate the server's honesty, but a less adventurous eater would have a difficult time creating a meal from this menu.
Kite and Key has a comfortable, modern, social atmosphere. With a very versatile menu of both food and drink, Kite and Key is quite able to satisfy whatever tastes you're looking for. Try the Tempeh Sandwich or Sweet Garlic Chili Wings.
A great Neighborhood bar...... A great place to sit outside, watch the game and just take in the sights.....
As an amateur local food blogger, on random occasions, I get invited to things. Trust me, it happens rarely, but when it does, sometimes I go...
On a walkabout in Philly and a local told me to try this place out. Pretty quiet on a Monday afternoon after the Eagles losing on Sunday… lol. Went with all their specials of the day- Pumpkin Sweet potato soup & grilled cheese, Road Mary’s Baby Pumpkin Ale, and finally House made pumpkin ice cream. All great and service wonderful! Love local places!!!
Great regular neighborhood spot. Bar is great for happy hour and an Eagles game. Fried pickles are spot on and the wings are solid.
Kite & Key was a great restaurant. I found this by googling some restaurants with outside dining. Wellllllll it was a good choice 👍🏽. The food was good. The service was great. The atmosphere was pretty safe and comfortable. It’s btw CCP (Community College of Philadelphia) and the Parkway. I enjoyed my lunch date with my baby girl. My daughter had a ball, too and she loved the place and the servant.
Wine down Wednesday’s is an awesome thing to do to get over Hump Day! Had an amazing time here, staff is friendly made me feel welcomed and at home. Food is on point the desert - apple empanadas OMG!!!! The Best!!!! Can’t wait to go back!!!!!!
Came here to get lunch on a Saturday. There wasn’t a lot of people there but the service and food was really good! I got the turkey BLT wrap and it did not disappoint.
this spot has so much charm! I moved next door recently and the wholesome and friendly vibes are out of this world. Not only that, but the food is delicious and the menu selections have a great variety for everyone!
I came here for a networking event between 5:30 and 8:30. I got the taco salad and it came with a taco shell, which costed $14. I also got a Truly, which was on draft and $1 cheaper for happy hour. It was a good experience, the bartenders were helpful and the people I met were insightful.
Good beer and cool staff. Very few vegetarian options. If you are an avid seafood eater I recommend steering clear of the fish and chips. Due to the price I was sure they would be made from fresh fish but definitely frozen and was not very appetizing. I typically eat everything on my plate and quick but today I only ate the fries. Which were just okay in taste. Overall the place was cute but extremely over priced for the quality of seafood
Good beer collection with some unique finds. Their outside setup is really nice for a large group, you just order at the window and pick up your drinks. They have one tv outside for games. Their food is just ok - wouldn’t come here to eat.
Spur of the moment decision to go to dinner with friends a couple weeks ago and, since I live up the block but hadn't been here yet, chose this place.
Good atmosphere with the open front of the restaurant and bar, with more seating towards the back (looked like there may be an upstairs but didn't venture there). Hostess and our server were friendly and very attentive. We all ordered the Blackened Chicken Sandwich; I also had a Magners. For dessert, we we're a little disappointed because they were out of the Bread Pudding and the Beignets, but the Chocolate Lava Cake was still good. Overall, good food and dining experience. I would come back to try some other items.
*Tip: for the Blackened Chicken Sandwich, you may want to tell them not to blacken it too much. One of my friends I was with order hers like that based off prior experience, so we followed suit and ordered the same way. Good thing we did, because it was just right and I couldn't imagine them cooking/blackening it more than that
Update: went for lunch last week with some coworkers since we were in the area. A decent reliable spot and I did really enjoy my Grilled Chicken Sandwich & Sweet Potato Fries
Hungry and wanted to quick bite and a drink and Kite and Key proved just the ticket. There was no other people dinning when we went so the service was second to none. Got the taco salad which can be a risky bet, but this one proved quite delicious. Everyone else in the party enjoyed their food as well, with at least two of them raving about the grilled cheese. Nice little bar that I heard can be lively in the evening.
Nice simple place. We went really early and was friendly and relaxed.. people started coming in as we left, and I thought it looks like a good crowd. Nice to eat somewhere that has good food, easy atmosphere, and priced both reasonable with food portion and beer choices. Worth a quick bite.
Love the Kite and Key. Their food is always on point and the management and staff are super friendly and easy to work with. As both a native(local) of the city, a tour guide and adventure leader, it's great having a place on the edge of Center City where we can gather with 10-15 people easily (though I recommend contacting them as far out as possible) that is both delicious and reasonably priced with a great drinks selection.
We were looking for something close to our hotel since we're not from Philadelphia. We walked by and the atmosphere caught our attention. Service was attentive from start to finish. I never have chicken strips (3) that you're full from one. I will eat here again if I'm ever in Philadelphia.
Nachos with chicken to start. These were really good. Thick crunchy chips, real cheese, good guac and salsa. They were also layered so even chips on the bottom were covered.
Kite and key burger. I ordered it medium rare. It came out well done, so it was a little charred and dry. The bun was a little denser than I like. Other than that the burger was seasoned well. Good portion of bacon and onion strings on the burger.
The fries were good. They were nice and crispy. However it seemed like our food had been sitting around a bit because the everything got cold pretty quick.
The beer selection was pretty good. They had a good selection of different types on draft. I had a terrapin Czech
Pils which was good. I recommend it if you want to drink a bunch of them
Service was good. No complaints. They took care of us.
Wow! What great service we received here! Food was delicious too! My friend and I chose different meals and then asked for sandwiches to be cut in half so we could share. They brought us each out two plates, having split the whole meals in two. It was an enjoyable experience.
