Interesting beer choices, German food, pub food, friendly staff, and casual atmosphere. I have been here a few times and haven't been disappointed.
Terrific place to have a beer and a wonderful meal. The sausage sampler is awesome! Bier cheese soup and goulash are very tasty. Please bring your appetite, the portions are huge, you won't be disappointed. Also, between the rotating seasonal beers and their staples you will find a nice beer to cuddle up to. Highly recommended!
Kasespatzle. Served with Chicken and a Cool River Kolsch
Came here for Dinner and loved it!. We came to Pittsburgh for the night and didn't know where to go so we took a chance on this one because, hey it's a brewery, at least there will be beer right! Well, not only was the beer good, the food was excellent too. Next time we're sitting in the courtyard patio too. Come Eat here!
Eet Smakelijk!!
Awesome Beer, Great Food and Music!
Decent German food. If you want a fairly authentic German bierhalle, this is your place. Solid, though not outstanding, renditions of common German dishes. Very similar to fare in the region in which I lived as a child (near Zell am Rhein).
Having been in the restaurant on the exact same night as a couple other reviewers (12/23/11) I wouldn't have recognized the place from their description. We had very friendly service, & the beer sampler I tried didn't have a bad brew in the bunch.
Drink, Don't Eat. Penn Brewery makes great beer. The atmosphere here is really neat, especially if you're lucky enough to catch live German music.
Their food is very overpriced, the portions small, and the quality not all that good. Come for the beer, but if you want good German food, go to Max's.
Sauerbraten was the bomb!! Loved it. Perfectly prepared. Chicken tenders were not good. Cheese spaetzle was very tasty, very rich could only eat a few bites.
Chicken Wing Pierogis?. You have to order these! They are SO good. The beer cheese soup is to die for. That being said, the last time I went I didn't order it because it was so hot. So hot, in fact, that I had to order an extra raspberry Weizen. Poor me.
Ehh. Went for lunch and the food while good was a mess to eat. I do like the beer and will be back.
Sausage sampler was great. Do not attempt to finish yourself.
Like mac & cheese but better.
Traditional german food. I've been to germany several times and penn brewery's food is more authentic... wtf, right?
any ways, try the rouladen, and if you're there during oktoberfest, try the half-gallon of beer.
Hometown Hops. Penn Brewery is a Pittsburgh institution...kind of like Kennywood and the Incline. I will always appreciate the history and the nostalgic feeling that warms me every time I walk into the brewery. The people who work there are outstanding, because they do what they do with great passion. The beer is tasty and is made with lots of Steel City love. The food is a work in progress, as the menu could use a little love and some of the dishes need some inspiration. However, the classic staples such as the German potato salad are spot on and the red cabbage is mouth watering! I look forward to continuing to be a patron as the "Old and Improved" Penn Brewery evolves.
Worth a shot..... The menu is sort of a Pittsburgh obscure menu. The newer American Pale Ale was slightly hoppy and nice.
The appetizers were all good!!
The schnitzel was ok..nothing more.
The service was stellar and the staff was very easy to work with as we had a large group, some had Groupons, some did not, some had cash, some had credit cards. No problems at all.
We'll be back.
Awesome. Food and service was amazing! A must go!
Great place but know there are two different menus depending if you sit on bar side or restaurant side.
Guten Tag!. Enjoyed a delicious lunch today at Penn Brewery. Instead of my usual Kartoffelpuffer (Traditional German potato pancakes), I opted for the special pierogies of the day, which were Reuben pierogies (stuffed with corned beef, swiss cheese, and topped with kraut and Thousand Island Dressing). They were very good. Washed them down with their summer seasonal weizen beer . . . delicious lunch!! Prost!
Go here before Hofbrauhaus!. I am in love with this place.
I was a patron long before it's unfortunate closure, and I'm delighted that it has been opened up once again. The food is amazing, with the pretzels, schnitzel, and pierogies being my complete favorite. The pierogies that were available on my most recent visit were the buffalo chicken and the special of the day: Reuben. The creativity of the pierogies and all other dishes have ensured that I will be a patron for a long time to come.
Also, the beer is amazing here. I was new to try the Penn Summer Weizen, and it nearly knocked my socks off. It's similiar to Hoegaarden, but the clove notes are better and it seems a little lighter and more summery. Of course, Penn Pilsner and Penn Dark are obvious other choices as well. I loved trying the beers in the Biergarden before going in for my dinner, and I highly, highly recommend that you do as well.
Great atmosphere for a good beer and german-polish food. Had the Allegheny Pale Ale, which was a good balance of hops and malt. I was completely blown away by their featured appetizer, Reuben Pierogies. They should definitely think of adding that to their permanent menu. The only real downside was the parking, which was fine when we went at 9pm but would definitely be a bear during peak hours.
Good beer, abbreviated, but good menu. My wife and I had dinner here last week, and I enjoyed it very much. It was our first visit. We like good German good, and liked our dishes: Potato Pancakes for an appetizer, which I really like. We had the Sauerbraten and a Cabbage/noodle/apple/bacon dish, which were both very good. The atmosphere was great. The weather was perfect, and it was nice to walk through the cobblestoned gateway to the restaurant, and there were people eating and drinking outside.
I had the Heffe Weizen. I really liked that. My wife had the Weizen Bock, and that was really good, too.
We will definitely go back.
I noticed that a few menu items weren't available there, but they were listed on the online menu. No big deal, but they didn't have some things that we probably would've ordered.
Sad to see it go!. It's a damn shame that the Penn Brewery is closing! It is a landmark for the city and will be terribly missed!
Beer, German food and grown men in lederhosen.... Penn Brewery offers award winning craft brews and hearty German (and pub) fare. The brewery has a fun atmosphere that combines the modern brewery, historic surroundings, and often includes live music. The live music is often the best part. Where else can you watch grown men in lederhosen play music and sing while drink beer? Oh, and you may be sharing a table with strangers.
The beer was very good, and again, very authentically German tasting. I could drink it every day, but it was nothing I would tell a friend they absolutely had to try. Nor was it something I felt compelled to bring home a growler or a 6-pack of. Also, they only had three types of beer available when I went, so a type besides the Heffeweizen or the Dunkle Lager might be outstanding, but I didn’t get to try them. (And honestly, how does a place like that run out of their own beer???)
These buildings have served as beer breweries since 1848, and they served a historically German neighborhood with the most authentic experience you will find in the area. The microbrews are only part of the attraction; everything about Penn Brewery is authentically German.
Penn Brewery is unique. You go for the experience. The food was very good. The potato pancakes were excellent and unique. The beer on tap was average. None of the beer knocked my socks off. The service was quick.
One of my favorite spots in Pittsburgh. Outstanding beers, Penn Pilsner is a personal favorite. Traditional German fare is great. The potato salad is rock solid. I had lobster this time. It was awesome. You should definitely visit.
Overall a great place. Had plenty German style beers that were tasty. Wife had the lobster spatzle and I had the pork schnitzel. Both were very good. The lobster dish had plenty of lobster pieces. The schnitzel was tasty. Would recommend if you’re in the area.
Great atmosphere, awesome food and Beer. Met the owner and the brew master. He actually stopped a project he was working on Th find me a shirt and Hoodie. If in the Burg it's a must visit
I need to tell more people about the seasonal nut roll ale. It’s the perfect holiday beer in my humble and uneducated opinion. Just a touch of sweet, a little chocolate and cinnamon, and the slight bitterness of walnut. It tastes curling up by a cozy fire with a plate of grandmas cookies and a hot chocolate. I get what all the Hallmark movies were trying to tell me now. Please if you see it, grab it and save me one.
All of that food you see was eaten by two people and ordered by me! Obnoxious, but totally worth it! This was my treat to my best friend’s milestone birthday. Good beer too. Known as Pittsburgh’s Oldest Brewery, not only is this establishment a staple in the community, it’s a must! I just looked at the menu and it is a little different from 2016, but still amazing. I look forward to returning one day to dine in again.
If you love German food, this is your place! The pork schnitzel is a MUST try, and I definitely recommend the potato pancakes. The oven baked chicken with mashed potatoes and broccoli were my favorite. The perogies and BBQ chicken wings were perfectly cooked. Great beer selection. We got seated right away on a Friday night around 6:00 PM. Great service, clean place. They have an outdoor cave which would be great for summertime dining. Can’t wait to come back!
The building is beautiful. The atmosphere was lovely and dim. Our waitress was kind and polite. The food came out in a reasonable time and was delicious. Weinersnictzhel was crispy. French fries tasted fresh and savory. If I lived in the area, I would definitely come here again.
Missed Octoberfest, but learned why. Cool place, great food, awesome food, parked right out front. Had a blast 👍
Attended the Pop-Up Brick Burger event. Love the historic building.
This is our first time here & what an awesome experience! Very excellent staff, very delicious beer & food & beautiful architecture & ambiance. Highly recommended! Stefan Wolfgang Nitsch: We had a great time & we’ll definitely be back!
Penn Brewery is the oldest and largest brewery in Pittsburgh. I visited this business, though, not for their beer but rather for their food. Their restaurant has a German-inspired menu, and my husband and I ate lunch here. Our favorite foods were the pretzels, mashed potatoes, German potato salad, and apple strudel. We thought that the potato pancakes, wienerschnitzel, and cod sandwich tasted OK. Our waitress made friendly conversation, and the prices were average. Please note that this business has multiple buildings with multiple entrances. To enter the main restaurant, we parked our vehicle in a free garage, and then we walked down steps, past stone caves, and up other steps.
Amazing, hardworking & friendly staff !
Love watching football at the bar on Sundays with friends & ordering the delicious game day food.
Penn feels more alive than ever with all of the positive changes and good energy.
Keep up the good work ! 🍻❤️
