Look, when it comes to good Mexican fare Portland has choices. When your talking about great Mexican fare there are a few. But if you want amazing, hand crafted, and top level flavors of Mexican food that’s consistent, it’s at El Gallo!
The other few better take notice, these cats are on top of their game, and better yet, there game is on every day.
Best food I've ever put near my mouth hole ! You will have dreams about these tacos .
I've eaten tacos at every wagon from here to the border and these are the best. I usually don't care for burritos but I couldn't stop eating the one from El Gallo! Staff is great too.
The Carne Asada El Gallo Burrito (the one without rice) is the best shit ever. I love the Melt Your Face and Jake has been an awesome member of that neighborhood for a long long time. Blows Super Torta right out of the water.
Awesome staff. The food was top notch. I'll be back.
I don't ever write reviews, but El Gallo is worthy of my time. What a great joint! Amazing food, everything cooked perfectly, and friendly staff. I never need convincing to stop in and grab some tacos that's for sure. Thanks for being in the neighborhood!
This is the highest quality of Mexican food I've ever had. All local/organic ingredients. I try to eat here at least once per week. Sometimes everyday. Their breakfast burrito is by far the best breakfast burrito in Portland.
El Gallo Taqueria has the best tacos in Portland, Oregon. Carnitas, asada, local, down home, good Mexican food from great people in SE Woodstock.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for adding the Mexican Blackbird Burrito to the menu! I know not much can spark a foodie debate like black beans versus pinto...so I won't go there, but I will say this was so rich and flavorful and satisfying. I had mine with Carnitas - it is now my favorite burrito ever!
One word: Delicious!
Authentic, cool staff, great location, neat little cafe, good music, and did I mention delicious?
Outstanding customer service at this place, the food is to die for spot on way to go boys
Carne asada super burrito is awesome! Hands down the best burritos in Portland.
El yes.. This place is awesome! Love, love, LOVE the fish tacos. Best hand-made tortillas, good quality meats used, friendly service, awesome prices. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that being a 1 man show, Jake isn't always open during his posted hours and I have on more than one occasion had to satisfy my craving elsewhere. Oh, what the hell, 5 stars it is cause 4 isn't enough! I've tried much of what's on the menu and always go back for the fish tacos.
A good thing going.. We will just be repeating what everyone else says about freshness, quality, and care.
The corn tortillas hand pressed to order are like everyone else mentions, a beautiful artform that evokes a wonderful feeling of satisfaction. It has this density and softness that a usual corn tortilla lacks.
The simplicity is the best part. No special effects or quirky northwest endeavors.
We finished our tacos and looked at one another in delight as our faces melted into absolute bliss.
The Face Melter Salsa is Scoville Scale Approved.
No other burrito compares. Hands-down the most flavorful burrito PDX has to offer. Chicken, steak, pork, seafood, vegetarian--all and any of these options are worth a try. Freshly made tortillas (yummy!). Reasonably priced. Great service. Good location. Also, homemade sauces offered, ranging from green chile, mild, hot, and 'melt-your-face'--again, very well-made and tasty. Other menu items available, but the burritos are out-of-this-world good. Really.
Great. Was tired of hearing how great the Portland area food carts were, so I thought I'd finally give one a try. If the rest are like this, I'll be hitting up some more real soon. I had the Asada steak taco. It was excellent. Fresh of the grill with just the right amount of spices. Very tasty and only $2.00. The owner was friendly and helpful with the menu items. All the prices were very reasonable. It also has a nice little covered front porch. It came in handy, since the temps were pushing 100 degrees. If you are ever in the Woodstock area, it's worth a visit. The well reviewed Yolk breakfast cart is right next door too.
The Cats PJs. Me and my old lady have been wanting to try these guys for a while and finally got the opportunity this last Wednesday. I had to force myself not to get a burrito, even though I am the King of Burritos. The reason? These guys make their own corn tortillas and theyre supposed to be the shiznizzel. So we each ordered a Pollo, Carnitas and Asada Taco. After I paid we realized we'd forgotten about their Fish Tacos. I slowly began to weep like the forgetful cretin that I sometimes am. Next time you dumb bastard, next time...
After a while, I managed to move on and a few minutes later we were awarded a bag containing the objects of our desire, followed by a sauce inquiry: Face Melter? Medium? Mild? Yes please. All of the above. We wandered over to the Lutz, ordered a couple of Margaritas and got down in it. I tackled the Carnitas first and that was probably my favorite. Face Melter was cruel but needed a little more going on than just sheer destruction. So I mixed some of the super delicious Medium in with it and voila! Perfection had been achieved.
I love taco trucks but most of them do a dicey (but somewhat, necessary thing). That thing is that they cook all the meats in the morning, chop them up and throw them in a bin to be reheated once you place your order. If both steps are timed out perfectly, you can sometimes get away with it because the meat isnt dried out. But unfortunately, a lot of the time, you take a bite of one of these and are left cursing, chewing on little rocks. If the folks over at El Gallo are taking this shortcut then they have it down pat. I forgot how tender and delicious these kind of tacos CAN be. When theyre prepared properly. The Chicken and Steak were equally slobber, drool inducing offerings and the thick and hearty tortillas were more than up to the task of keeping everything in place. Have no doubts, these gringos make some Mexican grubs that would make Abuela sigh in defeat. The best thing is that I still have the Fish Tacos (which are supposed to be fantastic) and Burrito to look forward to. Life is good, even though the weather is usually not.
Grade: A ( oh yeah, forgot about my wife. she got tuned out along with the rest of the world once I began unscrambling those flavors. Once we both came back down to earth I was completely unsurprised to find that her own experience mirrored my own, that is to say, she thought it was the cats pajamas)
Best asada taco ever the green sauce was great, wish I lived near it to go to everyday, way to go jake! Great food
Authentic, made-from-scratch Mexican fare made with local, all-natural ingredients -and it shows in the taste!. El Gallo has the best Mexican food in town! The owner, Jake lives in the SE Portland Woodstock neighborhood and is happy to create his delicious cuisine in his SE hood.
El Gallo uses all natural, local ingredients to create the simple but delicious menu, and it shows in the taste. The dough for the hand-pressed tortillas is made fresh every day as are all the meats. Everything comes from local purveyors and in the summertime farmers can frequently be seen delivering baskets of their fresh herbs and veggies.
All three of the amazing salsas are also made fresh from scratch and include a mild green (my personal favorite), a medium salsa roja, and the insanely spicy melt your face which consists of too many chilies to list and is not for the faint of heart.
The burritos are a scrumptious full pound of food which include El Gallo's amazing beans which are seasoned to perfection and delicious all on their own, cabbage, pico de gallo salsa, pickled onions, pepperjack cheese, and your choice of meat, fish, or nada to make it veggie friendly. My favorite part of these burritos is the cabbage which adds a unique crunch saddly absent from most burritos which are often weghted down by watery rice and beans. Avocado can be added for extra deliciousness!
The Nevada Tostada is easily the most unique menu option and the combination of flavors involved in this dish are awesome! It basically includes all the burrito fixins atop a made-from-scratch piece of fry bread made when you order. The bread is delicious and compliments the carnitas perfectly. It is also quite tasty as a vegetarian option as well.
Need more carts like this!. Hoping they expand! Excellent food choices and especially for those who are looking for value. My fiance and I are saving money for our wedding so we are looking for quick places that offer delicious food that fits within our budget. This place is one fabulous little cart. Only hoping they expand since we live across town.
Fish taco is great and so is the crunchy taco, the house made tortilla is a little doughy for me but was still good, I will be coming back and bring family and friends. It's a small place so I hope you're not claustrophobic lol but over all services was great and so is the food.
Excellent burrito 🌯. I had the El Pastor... The meat was as tender as your grammas behind when she was 20. Eat here. It's so good.
Flavors were top notch. I’m not a huge fan of shredded cabbage in the burrito though. I kept hoping it would end, but it took up half the burrito the entire way. Would sub out for rice next time.
First impression was small and a little hipster - not sure it was going to pass our test of love for cheap Mexican. The hand pressed tortillas were great - didn’t crumble and fall apart, thick, delicious.
Fish taco = would definitely order again. Good, perfectly battered fish.
veggie: standard taco, great option, nothing extraordinary (but would order again if vegetarian)
Carnitas = good! Had this in burrito and in a taco, both tasty!
The Al Pastor was already divine. Then the lingering taste of the homemade corn tortilla killed it. Excellent taco. Great choice of sauces. Clean. Wonderful service at the register. Will definitely return. Highly recommend
El Gallo has some of the best tacos around. Love their street tacos and burritos. The tortillas and meat options are very tasty. Staff is always friendly. Small dining area so may have to get to go but great spot for a meal.
Freshly made corn tortillas and delicious street tacos. They have something for everyone!
Super fresh, wonderful flavors, LOVE that they put cabbage in their burritos instead of lettuce - stays crunchy and doesn’t get wilted with the heat of the food. Super bummed their hours are so restricted though! Rarely open when I’m scouting a meal. Like in this very moment for example. :’)
One of the first places I ate at when I first moved to Portland. The space seems a bit small at first, but there's a few more seats farther back as well. As long as you don't come during peak meal hours, you'll find seating. There's a reason why it gets busy, and it's because people know it's good!
The food is amazing! This is the only place in Portland that I like going to for tacos or burritos. It tastes genuinely good, and it reminds me of food I used to get in Texas.
A note to people who haven't been here before: the tacos are small; you might even call them snack sized. There's a reason why they're $3 each. For reference, I usually get two to three tacos when I come here to eat. Some of my friends with bigger appetites will occasionally get four tacos.
This place is one of the best burritos ever! I really like their varieties of choices including brunch and vegan burritos. I'm new to town but I have to say the food here is way better than Chipotle. I really like how creative they are to use a deck of cards as the calling number. They don't have obvious signs sticking out of the restaurant, but this place is easy to find really. Ample of parking nearby. Highly recommend this place!
