This is a no-ketchup establishment. For me, ketchup is synonymous with hot dogs. But their chili is good enough to make up for it. I don't usually add raw onions to my hot dogs, but the flavor pairs well with the chili. I normally like slaw on my chili dogs, but the raw onions was better!
The best local grilled wieners in town with delicious home made chili and authentic Coca Cola bottles. You won’t find ketchup at this place! Tiny adorable place with such warm owners, George and Mama Freida! Family owned since 1940! You won’t want to miss this gem ! Open 11-4. Mmmm mmmm good!
We were visiting from VA Beach for a few days and looking for some of the local favorite places to eat. The Roast is a must eat place if your in town. The food was awesome and the owners and friends there were delightful to talk to. They shared some of the local history with us. Great food and great people. Go check it out.
Greatest thing we did in Raleigh! This place is the real deal the bomb what sweet people and what an amazing time we had. Do yourself a favor and go patronize the best place in Raleigh, we love their wieners !!!!!!

It's like a step back in time. Cool place, great dogs! George will even "char" them for you!
These will be the best dogs you have ever eaten. I miss them so much. I always get Four when I go. Three for lunch and one for dessert
Best hotdog place in the world George and his mom are the best
The food and the place are perfect in every way and the owners are adorable! Bring cash and your own ketchup...
Mustard, onions, chili, slaw.
Great old fashioned hotdog joint. Mustard, onions, slaw, chili.....my choice was the burnt dog. Front door is a screened porch door. Coke in the bottle as a chaser. Eat at the bar. Always ask for catsup....just kidding as they would NEVER put catsup on a dog. A+
Brought my kids here every Saturday when they were young. Now they’re all grown up, but they still cherish the memories and they never ask for ketchup on their hot dogs.
Best grilled dogs anywhere. Great chili! No ketchup! Take a piece of baklava or pound cake for dessert.
Excellent food, just have patience it gets busy. George the owner loves his guests.
I miss you guys so much I bought them in bulk last week when I was home. Now I can have Roast Grill in California. Literally the best chili dogs on the planet!
This place is as close to perfect as it gets in a hot dog joint.
Great food, easy to understand menu, friendliest service you’ll EVER get, great value. Period!
Love this place. Greatest Hot Dogs in town, small place with 10 stools!
Is as advertised. Great chilli for the dogs. I'd be a regular if I lived in the area. Glad we stopped. Well worth it
A must if you want a classic griddle dog with chili and coleslaw. One of the last places to get lunch and a beer for under $15 in downtown Raleigh. I personally don't like ketchup... But if YOU do then this might not be the place for you. 😉🌭
Absolute perfect atmosphere for a hot dog joint. I've had better dogs, but I've never had them at a better spot. Dogs were perfectly charred and the chili was great. The slaw wasn't the best I've had but it didn't take anything away from the dog. Service was as sweet as the Tootsie Roll that was handed out at the end. Probably couldn't bring the boy because... NO KETCHUP ALLOWED!
Like taking a step back in time in the best way possible.
One small lunch counter and 2 small tables. No frills hot dogs, a few simple sides and soft drinks. Hot dogs are cooked perfectly and staff is friendly and attentive.
You can also get your dogs to go if its full inside. Definitely recommend if you are in the area.
A piece of Raleigh history and delicious to boot. If you're near downtown Raleigh and want some delicious hot dogs, head to the Roast Grill. Where blue collar and white collar pull up to the same bar and dine shoulder to shoulder on well cooked hotdogs, glass bottle cokes, and never a drop of ketchup. The same grill sizzles away in the corner of this all-cash eatery. Accessibility has not improved with the recent pay-to-park scheme the city of Raleigh has implemented, but, the walk is worth it.
I get them extra burnt with just chili and a dash of Texas Pete. It's heavenly.
I went today because I had cash on me because they don't take credit. I usually don't have any money on me. That being said, I love this place. It's one of the last places in Raleigh that remind you of what Raleigh used to be. The owners are not there just to take your money, they treat you like they've known you forever. The dogs are good but the feeling you're at home is more than words can say.
This is the definition of old-town Southern dining establishment. I have such a great time when I grab lunch here. The couple that runs the place are incredibly kind, food is amazing and the atmosphere is so down to earth. I love bringing my young son with me here and they always treat him so kindly. Please stop by if you're in the area. Raleigh needs more places like this.
You know it's gonna be good when you're standing in line next to a sweet, retired couple that has been consistently eating here for decades. I'm glad I came here right before it opened because the line gets long quick and you want to be able to sit and enjoy the cute diner experience. George and Cathy are absolutely delightful. I ordered the hot dog with everything (mustard, slaw, onions, and chili). The chili is what makes the dog so yummy. According to the retired couple, it took George years to master his grandma's recipe. I also got the pound cake which was nice and moist. So glad this was my first meal during my weekend trip to Raleigh!
For a number of years I had heard the legend of the Roast Grill...I had seen it on Man vs Food and just had to try it. One day I noticed a sign on what seemed like an old house for hot dogs and realized I had found it. I walked in and was met by the owner cooking dogs on an old cooktop...there was a counter and 2 small two person tables along the narrow walkway. It was perfect...a step back in time in many ways. Not only that but glass soda bottles....something that brought me back to the 80's and experiences with my dad and I. The dogs are great but the experience sets it apart...bring cash and just enjoy.
I've had people telling me to come here for years and never had a chance to make it, until now. It was definitely worth the wait! These are easily the best hot dogs I've had.
The owners are super nice and carried on great conversation. Can't wait to come back again!
Still love this place. Been coming for years and is a must when in Raleigh. Cash only so bring it with you.
Go early or be prepared to wait a spell. It only sits 10 or 12 people inside.
Never ask for Ketchup, but who in their right mind, besides a child, asks for Ketchup on a hot dog.
