We went for date night. The vibe inside was just as good as the food. Those were the best cornbread muffins I’ve ever had. Best catfish too, so tender and flavored perfectly. Had green beans and macaroni and cheese, those were good too. Greens were out of stock sadly. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Lovely decor and the ambience was cozy. We will definitely be back.
This was my first time dining here. The staff was friendly and the food was excellent. I had Big Mama’s Fried Chicken dipped in honey and it was delicious. The chicken was cooked to perfection. I also had the lemon cake and it was bursting with flavor. I will definitely be going back again.
This food was the best I've ever had! Every single dish I tasted was prepared with love! My taste buds thanked me! The service was excellent and the music was a whole vibe. This was so refreshing. I wish we had this in GA.
Just good southern style comfort food! Upscale restaurant unique to this part of Richmond. Exceptional service , friendly and professional staff. Reservations only, no walk ins and understandable considering how popular and busy they are.
I visited this establishment for the first time today. I drove 2 hours to check it out.
From the moment I stepped inside I felt welcomed. The hostess was friendly and showed me to my table within seconds. The music and vibe of the establishment is top tier. My waiter was quick with taking my order and getting my appetizer out quickly.
The food was good and came out hot and fresh. I would return again to try something else. There is only street parking in this neighborhood though and so that did suck a bit trying to find a spot but it worked out.
When I tell you This was the best fried chicken. Chefs kiss muah. Chelesa was the best ever. Please support this restaurant you will not regret it. Good food and good vibes what more can you ask for. I felt like I was at big mommas house on thanksgiving.
I had the pleasure to learn about southern kitchen’s history. Recipes passed down from Big Momma. I felt like she was right there. When I walked in it smelled like grandmas cooking on Thanksgiving.
We had a wonderful experience at southern kitchen! Our waitress amber was awesome she really was down to earth and had a beautiful sense of humor. My wife & I are definitely going back!
Location is close to Virginia Commonwealth
University in the old part of Downtown Richmond. Area has lots of one-way streets. The restaurant sits on a corner of a one-way street. The interior is impressive—seating is comfortable and well spaced. Lots of good food choices—all of your soul food classics. Your order is served hot. All my choices were delicious. The dinnerware for sides was unique and served the right portion of food. The cornbread muffins were served when you sit down—THEY ARE WONDERFUL; ask for more. The final bill was $80 for 2 people. They add in a gratuity to your bill automatically. 🤨Parking around this location is challenging; but there are a few public lots at a cost using the ParkMobile app. However, this restaurant is worth the trip!
A+ service and food was delicious. Celebrated my daughter's 8th birthday and she loved every single minute. They have a full bar along with delicious desserts. Full menu and the shrimp and grits are so delicious. The bathroom was a show stopper and smelled amazing. If your in town and need some soul food stop here you won't be disappointed. Our waitress was so beautiful. Thank You!
The Mac and cheese was delicious. Collard greens were okay. The fried honey chicken was tasty and made me happy. The fried catfish was also good. The cornbread muffin was the star of this show. Absolutely would eat here again.
