Japanese Food! Stop in Here!
Great food, wonderful amiance & friendly service! Isn't that what we all want? YES, yes, yes! Stop in here for a great meal in a relaxing atmosphere - heaven!
Great sushi place. Fish was all fresh and very affordable compared to most places. View over the river very nice. Just a challenge to find them as they are in the back of a shopping center.
Best sushi place I've ever eaten at!. And I've eaten at a lot.
All fish was super fresh with clean, crisp flavors. A few specials not listed on the menu that they must have gotten from their local fish monger. Three varieties of tuna, ebi, salmon roe, uni (they were out that day, which is A-OK with me!), octopus, mackerel, fresh and salt water eel...and many other sea creatures plus tons of rolls and prepared dinners. The mackerel was excellent!
But the rice... the rice was the best sushi rice I've ever had. Not too sticky or dry, sweet or sour. Just perfect!
Service was awesome! Sat at the bar and spoke with the sushi chef who was quite knowledgeable, skilled, talkative, and friendly. He, the waitress, and the owner made us feel like regulars. A great experience.
With a wall of chopsticks from their regulars, this place really has it going. I so want to be a regular!
We will be back!
Most authentic in san antonio. Ok I have been going here since I was a child and have tried an assortment of different sushi places in San Antonio. This is by far the freshest that I can say I've tried in 22 years. Yums. The only issue is some occasional service issues but the thing is that I don't know any other place that serves fresh wasabi, uni, ikura, even random things that I haven't heard of that are all so fresh!
I visited Texas from CA found this Sushi restaurant by chance. Loved their Sushi and friendly staff. When I visit San Antonio eating at Koi Kawa will be on my to do list.
Best fish in town. Hands down the best Sushi in town. Great atmosphere, friendly spot, most of all you can not beat the menu, from the tempura, to the selection of rolls everything is tremendous. I have been to Fujiya, Goro, Sushi Zushi, and the likes none compare even remotely to the quality found at Koi Kawa.
Best Sushi joint in town!! Love the Koi Kawa Krew and the atmosphere is very chill!! Love this place and highly recommend to those new in town or looking for a new sushi joint to try out!!
I don't know what this "terrible rolls" review is about, I have been coming here for years and never had a bad roll! There is a nice selection on the menu but the chefs will make anything you can imagine. Maybe not enough mayo and cream cheese for that user! If you want FRESH, tasty, imaginative rolls come here! If you want fried cream cheese concoctions go somewhere else. Best rolls in town for sure!
Very good sushi. My wife surprised me with an early sushi dinner. I had my usual choices inari, tamago, and unagi. The inari was sweet and moist, the best in San Antonio, and the tamago was cold and silky. The nori used for the unagi roll was very chewy, and a bit unappetzing. The contents of the roll was very tasty however. We definitely will return.
Decent sushi. Lovely little Japanese place with simple decor, friendly service (didn't really know the food, but that was fine - asked what wasn't known), and pretty darn good sushi.
Tempura was disappointing but seaweed salad great.
Limited sake selection if that's your thing.
A variety of nigiri pieces were buttery, melt in your mouth good. The rolls were a little less inventive and relied more on spicy sauce for flavor that anything else, but that's limited to the ones we have tried.
Overall a decent place with stand-up sushi in a pleasant environment. Not blown away but will likely be back.
So, Good! I Recommend This Place!. Wonderful Food, Great Atmosphere, Highly Recommend this place!
This is a Real Japanese Restaurant. A lot of Asian restaurants in San Antonio have an identity crisis. They don't know what they want to be when they grow up, so they try a little bit of everything - Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Etc., from various regions, which I know some people prefer.
Not Koi Kawa - this is a Japanese restaurant, and they are proud of it - which they should be. This is a menu that is so reminiscent of my time in Japan, with some nice new twist's thrown in to keep it fresh and modern. This is a full menu with lots to choose from, but the big emphasis is on sushi, sashimi, and tempura. I love it! And my biggest surprise is the authentic clay pot with hand rolled Udon noodle dishes. I had Nabeyaki (with an egg). I lived on clay pot meals for a long time while stationed in Japan. This is their version of comfort food. Very earthy and satisfying.
The sushi and sashimi is as fresh as any I've encountered in San Antonio, and the Sushi Chefs are fun & inventive and will make any roll you want, but the extensive list they offer should cover any and all taste's. If for no other reason, eat here for the sushi and sashimi. Prices are awesome for food this freshly prepared.
The dining room is open and comfortable with an awesome view of the pond outside. Its also much quieter than a lot of places we are used to going, so this is the perfect place for a nice intimate dinner, with service being as warm and friendly as any in town. The wine list is very good for a Japanese restaurant, and has a full selection of Japanese beers and an amazing Sake Menu.
To sum it up, I'm going to state the obvious - This is a real Japanese Restaurant. That's all you really need to know.
Probably best sushi in town. Tell the chefs what you like and they'll whip up something special. Great quality fish.
Pleasant Experience. My husband, our two-year-old son and I went here for sushi, despite mixed reviews on this and other sites. We were absolutely pleased. We are sushi lovers, but not sushi connoisseurs, so authenticity is second to flavor for us. Nice ambience, clean and bright. It was very quiet when we arrived, a half hour before the dinner rush, but never got too loud. Our waitress was attentive and pleasant. As a couple wanting a good dinner and not having the option of leaving our son behind, we were apprehensive of bothering other diners on a Friday night, no matter how well behaved he might be; however, the waitress brought his dinner first without our asking, provided smaller silverware (the first place in SA to do that!), etc. and was very understanding and helpful. The food was very good, fresh, hot or cold as it was supposed to be, plenty of it, served promptly as it was prepared, and certainly affordable. We would love to come back!
SUPERB!. Food is great! place is awesome! The server is cute! ;)
Heaven & Hell Roll, you're more heavenly. Sara Roll... Awesome!
Vegan: best avocado rolls in san antone. Try the agedashi tofu as an appetizer, just ask them to leave the fish flakes off. Tip your sushi chef, too.
A little pearl.... ... tucked away in San Antonio. We drove past it a couple times before finding it. Signage font is difficult to read.
We both ordered the sashimi platters (A & B). Waitstaff gave the impression that the one was just a smaller portion of the same fish, but their are additional species featured on the larger one. Delicious sashimi and miso!
Would have liked a hot towel at the beginning of the meal.
The Verdict: Divine!
Great!. I recommend the avocado cup, cucumber salad and the Heaven and Hell Roll. All were great. The staff was friendly and made great recommendations. I will definitely come back.
Pretty Good The food was great and the sushi was good. The only complaint I had was that the service was a little slow even as the only customer in the shop.
Best sushi in SA. Food is beautifully prepared and very fresh. Good menu selection and service.
A SA treasure. Brought our Japanese exchange student here, she said it reminded her of home. Don't come here if you want a quick meal. Come if you want good food, and a relaxing setting.
The Best in Town!!. I've eaten sushi all over the world, and I have to say that Koi Kawa has the freshest and best sushi I have ever had! The restaurant is so clean and the atmosphere is wonderful...I will be going back again!
Best Sushi for Japanese. 英語が間違っていたらすみません。The taste is closer to what Japanese want who have recently moved from Japan.
Always have found the food to be tasty. Enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
Koi Kawa. Nice place but it is a little hidden. Food was great. Staff was ok.
Great sushi quiet atmosphere that was very pleasing. Large menu. Part of order was forgotten
Best ever must go! Special Sarah roll !!
Best Sushi in San Antonio!. Nice setting, polite staff, and great sushi!
You won't find fresher, better tasting sushi anywhere in sa. Waitstaff is the friendliest, and the sushi chefs are very entertaining. These people have very good attention to detail. Everything from soup to sushi is delicately prepared especially for you. Very pleasing to the eyes and mouth. Young and old, wealthy and average come together to enjoy a truely magical experience.
Best sushi in San antonio! My husband and I go at least every other week. If you enjoy it enough to become a regular you get your own chopsticks ordered just for you to use when you come again. The sushi chefs are so much fun.
Great Sushi. Koi Kawa is back near the trees and near a gently flowing little river just off Broadway. Great ambience and sushi!
Good but.... I love Koi Kawa for the intimate setting and it's nestled off the road in a cozy location. The food is good, the prices are not bad, but.....
The service the last 2 times i've been there has been horrid. nobody comes back to refill drinks, the waiter didn't seem to know the menu very well when i asked about certain items. the final straw was the check. we had to just leave cash on the table and walk out because our waiter never came back!
Found this sweet gem in San Antonio when i was visiting and to be honest I have never had fish that fresh in my life. Everything was delicious and Young was my server and she was the best too ! Very nice and funny. Ask for her when you stop by. This place will not let you down.
I’ve had 3 chirashi bowls from 3 different restaurants. Koi Kawa hands down has the best sushi in town. I still think about this amazing bowl to this day and plan on going back to get me another. Great service and even better food!
WHAT! This place was so good! We googled sushi around us and koi kawa popped up so we took a chance with no research. We parked our car and started walking to the restaurant, we were greeted by such a cute boardwalk with a fountain display. We came in with a party of 5 and we’re seated right away. Our server was prompt. Our food was just yummy. I was sad they were sold out of their Japanese fish, but it was okay because everything else was delicious. We cleaned up every dish, not a single bite left
We love going to this place. It’s by the side of a river walk. You can eat and later can take a walk if you want. We have been there a couple of times. Their appetizers are good. Their sushi rolls are good too! This time we tried Jalapeño bomb basically tempura jalapeños filled with cream cheese. Loved it! We also took saba shioyaki and chasu don! First looking at the dish we thought it would be dry. But surprisingly it wasn’t. We both liked our selection! The fish had so much flavor. If you like mackerel fish you can try that item. We tried their miso soup as well. We like that too. I would visit again! I recommend trying this restaurant out. You wouldn’t regret it!
This one of the few places that I would recommend going anytime of the year. Went for a lunch date and she was highly satified. We ordered 4 rolls, for me the Sara Roll & Dream Roll, her the Kiss of Fire & Las Vegas Roll. I also ordered the Katsu dinner and she ordered the teriyaki chicken 🐔. It taste fantastic and I was actually overwhelmed by the flavor. I can't imagine eating sushi anywhere else. If you know of a place better or equal, let me know!!!
Solid sushi! The rolls taste fresh and are generous. They don’t overload them with rice. There is far more fish than rice in their rolls. Highly recommend!
I went during the day and had a lunch box. The price seems reasonable. After eating, it is a good place to explore the park. I didn't walk because the weather was hot.
Not only is this a super romantic place, but it is so serene and beautiful. Their sushi makes time stop.
The menu offers authentic Japanese choices, everything was absolutely scrumptious and the service was wonderful!
Went for the bento box lunch and it was delicious! The tempura was so light and crispy, the salad had a ginger dressing that was delicious, the sushi and spring roll were fresh, the chicken katsu was BOMB, and it comes with miso soup on the side! 😊
We were there for my mom's birthday weekend. She loved it, but it was a very busy afternoon. It was on a Sunday. We waited a while for our drinks. We enjoyed everything. It was so busy. I wasn't very happy about our table, but I didn't tell mom. It was our first time there, the food was great. We will go back, but on a different day.
Highly recommended by our daughter & realtor, exceeded our expectations
They have an extensive menu . Variety of sashimi, nigiri, maki, California options, & even chirashi. Variety of katsu, noodles (soba, udon, ramen), & donburi dishes.
Kept very clean. The dining area is relaxed with a pretty view (greenery & a bit of the SA river) NE side of Brackenridge Park. Dress up or super casual with family (all ages), friends, work, or date night. Sit at the bar where you can see sushi preparation & enjoy plenty drinks.
Stays very busy but the service was good, they were very warm & attentive.
Parking on premises but can get congested.
Highly recommend, will be one of our go-tos when we are missing JP.
The food is great here.
The staff is ok and the food is a bit pricey. But it’s worth trying.
Wow the best sushi in San Antonio and a wonderful ambience. The view of the San Antonio river is beautiful. This spot is a hidden gem off Broadway. P.S. the service is a lil slow and kinda snooty but it’s worth it.
I’ve eaten here twice and both times were wonderful. The sushi is excellent here. We tried the Ichiban, Spurs, Red Devil and another. The tuna poke appetizer was phenomenal. Some of the best tuna I’ve eaten outside of Japan. I would definitely recommend this place to family and friends.
The staff was great 👍 very helpful timely. The atmosphere in Koi Kawa was perfect. Clean, quiet and respectful. The appetizers we ordered were great and the sushimi was super fresh and cold. Delicious! We will Definitely be going back!
Everthing was delicious, we really enjoyed the explosion of flavors. We will definitely come back here everytime we visit San Antonio.
THIS PLACE WAS SO FREAKING GOOD!
The restaurant is around some other offices, but located towards the back. They have a bar, and open seating. They have a nice view for seating towards the side. Which I enjoyed, along with the dim lighting. The food is OMG 😱!!
They have lots of appetizers to choose from, but my favorite was the Gyoza 🥟!it was cooked just right, and packed with so much flavor! I had the Hot Tokyo and I want it again! It has a good amount of spice to it but tolerable! I added the cucumber and avacado which was the cherry on top! I would recommend you try it! The Udon 🍜 soup broth was so tasty 😋, and noodles were perfect. Just hard to grab with chopsticks 🥢 for us lol. The Mochi ice cream was mango flavored and 2 is plenty per person! I’ve tried others but I definitely think the mango 🥭 is my absolute favorite.
Young was our waiter and she was awesome! She made sure we were taking care of considering she was the only waiter I saw 👀. She’s was great 👍!
You have to try it! ✅
Freshest sushi I've had in San Antonio, and the food is served soo fast! The deep fried Hot Tokyo sushi roll was absolutely amazing 🤌✨️🍣
The atmosphere is also so beautiful with the windows looking out to Brackenridge
*Hot Tokyo roll has tempura shrimp, avocado, jalapeño, cream cheese, deep fried & topped with fresh spicy tuna. It's filling!
