It was my first time and it was pretty good. I'm from GA and it compares pretty close to deep southern food. Even the environment reminded me of home, great place.
The building my not be the most attractive but the food is amazing! Mr. Chatman is awesome! He greeted us and asked if we'd like to sample a fried riblet which was great!!! Our cashier was a little rude, but other than that the food was perfect. Best fried chicken I've had in San Antonio.
Awesome place. If you havent been here you missing out!Awesome food,Awesome customer service.Always so friendly. And fresh chicken everytime we go no matter what time of day it is!!
Great Gizzards. I live down I-35 North. I pass by Chatman's Chicken on the East Side every now and then. I decided to stop by and sample a menu item. I ordered the gizzards and was very, I say again, very satisfied. I haven't had gizzards that good since I was a kid when my father cooked them. Chatman's Chicken has the best gizzards in all of San Antonio, TX. It's a long drive from my house but those gizzards are worth the drive.
No. Thank You!!. If you live on the southeast side of town, you have heard of Chatman's chicken. I was over that way recently so I had to try it. The smell of fried chicken definitely draws you in to the colorful little restaurant.
I'm not sure if I encountered "The" Chatman behind the counter or not, but he was certainly polite. As a matter of fact, we played one upsmanship on thank yous for about 5 minutes - - - - He said "Hello." and, "Thank you for coming." I said "Hello." and, "Thank you for taking my order." He said, "No." and "Thank you for the business." I said, "My pleasure." and "Thank you." He said "No. . . . . . ." ; you get the idea.
I grabbed a table near the counter to watch the action in the kitchen so I could see the frenetic fomentation of fastidiously fricasseed fowl. Lots of inside and to-go orders coming in and the birds were flapping out of the place (like my onamonapia?) by the piece, plate and bag full. I wondered just how many whole chickens this place went through in a day at this rate of churn!
Received my order and dove in. Mistake!!! This food is served fresh - - that means it is just out of the fryer - - which means I took a bite of Mt. Vesuvius and was about to erupt from the lava flow in my mouth! Needless to say I had to order another Dr. Pepper!!
Once I put the fire out and tasted the chicken with the few remaining unsizzled taste buds I had left, I found that the golden fried pieces of wing, drumstick and breast were pretty good; crispy crust, tender meat, juicy juice (ran out of adjectives); I was definitely liking this guy's version of a southern classic.
As I was about to savor the last piece of my three piece combo, the same guy I had ordered from came over to my table and asked how I liked the chicken. I told him it was very good and thanked him. He said, "No." "Thank you for coming." I said. '"Thank you." and, "I appreciate your asking after my satisfaction." He said, "No." and, "Thank you for . . . . . . . . . . . . . .".
BEST WINGS in San Antonio..... Just WAAYYYY TO LONG OF A WAIT!!! And TE sitting area NEEDS TO BE CLEANED THROUGH OUT THE DAY!! Was really dirty and tables were not clean, but I can't get over the Best Wings I've had in years!!! Just a GOOD CLEANING and it would be GREAT!!!!
Very Juicy. Great fried chicken! Very juicy and tender. Love the sides especially the collar greens and mac n cheese.
I want to try the chicken fried steak next time.
Finally got my gizzard fix!!!. I posted a discussion on the local US forum in search of the best gizzards in the area. I was told to look no further than Chatman's Chicken and Stinky apparently agreed. He beat me here last week. I want to try everything but a gizzard fix was in order. Being caught between an all day shift on a Saturday, from downtown I made my trek to the Eastside and hit the drive thru. The drive thru speaker was out of order and a sign instructed to drive up and order. I was immediately greeted upon pulling up in the efficient line and ordered the six gizzard meal with lemon pepper seasoning and an additional box of gizzards to share. My ordered was called by the wheelman in the kitchen as I was ordering it and I was asked to pull aside while it was prepared. What I immediately noticed while waiting were all the people going in. It was very busy for a Saturday afternoon. I suppose I was a bit anxious and don't know how long I waited but as I thought about going inside to ask about my order, the same gentleman who took my order made his way out, thanked me for my business and said I would enjoy.
I'm not gonna lie. I immediately opened the gizzard meal and dug in. First thing I noticed is the size of the gizzards. I could only imagine how big the chicken pieces are. It is a first for me eating gizzards in this style with cream gravy, but it was great and I enjoyed them. Everything was fresh and very well worth a short wait. The prices are reasonable, the staff I encountered is very friendly. All in all a standout institution in the San Antonio area. The box I took to work was enjoyed by my coworkers and I am already planning a return visit for some original chicken recipe.
Way Better than the Colonels!!!. Lemme see. How can I put this? Sometimes the words just wont come. Ah heck - lets keep this simple.
This is GOOD Chicken! I had a wing (which was the size of a baseball) a leg, 3 gizzards, and 3 livers. (also very large pieces) I don't know where they get these chickens (I hope it ain't Chernobyl - just kidding) but these are not small pieces of chicken. And its clearly not frozen, its just too juicy. I don't know if these are the best gizzards and livers in San Antonio, but they're the best I've ever had. Deep southern fried just dripping from the fryer (I know! I know! Not healthy :-/) and comes in Lemon pepper, spicy or Original Crust flavors, so everybody's happy.
The buildings comfortable enough and its easy to find. Actually, I think the place is an old Long John Silvers, but I don't know that for sure. Lots of parking too with a nice and easy drive through, but I ate inside, which allowed me to meet the super friendly and helpful staff inside.
Prices are some of the best in the city for chicken this good run by some good people serving up some amazing chicken. I'm willing to bet KFC would give anything for this recipe.
Chaaaaatman's Chicken....where your chicken gets Chat!!!. Tuesday: $2.99 for 8 pieces!!!!!
Must have: Corn Fritters, Mashed Taters, Fries, Catfish Plate, Chicken Fried Steak Dinner, Gallon of Sweet Tea and of course their FRIED CHICKEN!!!
We ordered 200 pieces of chicken to feed 80 people and it was the BEST large order chicken I've ever had! The local fried chicken restaurant chain had served us old chicken TWICE when we ordered 200 pieces so we decided to go with Mr. Chatman. The best decision I've made since sliced bread!
My fiance and her friend were greeted by Mr. Chatman himself and had his employees open and shut their car door for them!
This is the way business was handled in 'old days'....take care of your cusotmers and they'll be back for more (with a friend)! I loved his firm hand shake with a smile! Keep up the great work....you have a customer for life!
Best Chicken Ever!. Went to Chatman's yesterday for the first time and it was the most tender chicken I've ever eaten! They just made a life long customer.
Loved Chatman's. Longtime SA residents, we'd never been to Chatman's before. Not wanting to cook anything, we decided on a "google adventure" and found Chatman's on this and other sites. The place is a former "Long John Silver's" restaurant with some of the landscaping and cutlasses on the doors still evident. There the similarities end, because the chicken was fantastic. We met others who'd driven miles to get take-out. One of the staff asked if this was our first visit. After replying positively, she brought us out a complimentary portion of delicious corn fritters. We had corn on the cob and fries as sides. Unlike other chicken places, the corn here is the whole thing--not cut in half and they are butter drenched. I needed a bib. We'll be back.
Amazing fried chicken!!! Can't stop craving this chicken, we'll be back!!!
Very Good. Wings are the best!!! great environment.
Chicken Friendly. Stopped in the other day at this east side landmark and I was glad I did! Greeted by very staff, they enjoy their job, enjoy their customers, and enjoy to cook some of the best...almost like mama's, fried chicken. Tender, large pieces of succulent chicken. I will be back....but want some gizzards next time.
Great lemon pepper fried chicken. Three pieces was a lot to have. The fries were good too. Skip the wings. Way too much batter and not enough chicken. The staff is very friendly and the dining area clean. I'll shall return.
100%!!!. Gotta be something right! awesome prices, friendly staff, and excellent food.
Better than Church's. Good chicken! They now have lemon pepper and spicy flavors.
BEST CHICKEN PERIOD!!!!!!!
This is the best fried chicken I have ever had. Completely and utterly amazing. Eddie the owner is awesome as well as his entire team. You can tell his team all love working here which reflects in the quality of the food and service. I drove 35 minutes from the Northside for this Chicken and it was absolutely worth the drive. Next time I will buy in bulk like a trip to Costco.
The chicken here really is excellent. She gave me a little pork sample while I waited for my food and that was excellent as well. If your getting tenders get them spicy is my recommendation. I ordered a spicy chicken wing that came out a little later and wish I had ordered everything spicy. The fries were okay, but the Mac and cheese was very good. I wish the interior looked as good as the food tasted. But that’s how it goes- the worse the place looks the better the food tastes. I thought it was cool they had a community board as well.
The best fried chicken I've had in San Antonio! It's about 20 minutes from where I live but 100% worth the drive. The prices are great, too. We got a 12 piece, half spicy and half lemon pepper, box of chicken. We also got mashed potatoes, greens, coleslaw, beans & rice, and okra. They were all perfect! Especially the greens. I highly highly highly recommend this place if you're in the mood for some southern fried chicken! You won't be disappointed. We paid about $40 for everything.
Omg ❤️❤️. The flavor of this food and koolaid 👏👏👍🏼. Everything looks so good it was very hard deciding what to eat. We ended up getting the 3piece spicy white with okra and greens. 3 piece dark yams and fries. Added gizzards to go lol. Then when we decided to come back to get the fried riblets and chicken and waffles.
I’ve worked in restaurants for 14 years. Ritz Carlton’s, four seasons , jw marriotts. The level of genuine care and love felt in every bite is authentic as sitting at grandmas house for dinner. They stay true to who they are. The owner was nice enough to talk to my GF and I while we enjoyed our meal and brought out a fried riblet. Omg y’all it was incredible all the food is real home cooked southern cruise. Go!!! If it ain’t Chatmans it ain’t chicken!
First of all what an amazing team, the customer service was to the T!!!! I felt so comfy being here and eating at location.. food was flavourful and fresh.. I recommend this place to everyone.
You can just tell by the building at this place is going to be good. Sign read: "Thank you San Antonio for the 21 years". They're definitely doing something right. Super friendly and kind people. They gave me a sample of a fried pork rib which was delicious! I got the three-piece dark with lemon pepper. All I can say is that it's great chicken! moist, flavorful, hot, fresh what else do you want?!
The food at this restaurant was awesome. The customer service was great and the staff made sure everything was made correctly. I would definitely come back again.
My buddy and I were driving back into town from RockPort. On a whim we decided to stop here. This was THS BEST fried chicken I've ever had, and I'm a New Orleans native. Every side was superb, the chicken was crispy and crunchy, and the staff were very kind and sociable. My friend who was with me at the time finished his plate and IMMEDIATELY went back for seconds. Won't be eating at Popeyes or KFC ever again. When I want fried chicken, I'm going to Chatmans.
Service was so nice! Chatman thank you sir for being so generous and giving. This is now my all time favorite ❤️ place! The fried okra is amazing!! I am a huge fan of okra and I rate my okra. They did a fantastic job with their okra and chicken. Finally a restaurant who makes fresh fried okra!!! Thank you 🙏🏻
I wasn’t feeling well and this meal was so delicious. Made me feel a little bit better. Thank you 🙏🏻 and God bless this place and their workers and their families.
OK to be honest, I’ve been to Chapmans before always have a pleasant experience met the owner before friendly guy. Food was good today. The only thing I did not like was the white meat was a little too dry for my taste other than that everything else was great. The other thing was the jalapeño poppers were half shell type big filled with cheese did not care for those and I had asked for three and they charge me for six besides that everything else is good.
Went to Chatman's chicken for lunch today and I regret not checking this place out sooner. The fried chicken was super flavourful, juicy and crispy. Super friendly service, the owner was very friendly and let us try a riblet which was phenomenal. Highly recommend!
Chapman's Chicken is definitely a restaurant you must try. The food was delicious and the staff was very very friendly.
I came here as I had been told about it alot. The employee named Ethan was very helpful with my order and explained everything to me. All of the other employees were very nice and friendly too. While I was eating my meal inside I got to meet Mr. Chatman and he was very friendly and kind. My meal was delicious and very fulfilling, look out Churches and KFC with that small chicken pieces that they give you.
The chicken is the best I’ve tasted in San Antonio. It reminds me of my grandmother’s fried chicken. So, so good! Loved the fried okra as well. The young man who helped us at the register was very attentive, and polite. I wish there was a location closer to me.
I visited for the first time after seeing it plenty of times before. There was a line in the drive through, but the gentleman who helped me was very nice and even offered me a free riblet sample when I mentioned it was my first time.
I really liked the chicken and the sides I got. My family was very pleased as well. I'm definitely coming back again to give more if the menu a try.
Most excellent fried chicken since grandma's home cooking. You will not be disappointed. Best greens I've had in a long time. Will definitely visit again very soon.
