Very affordable. Better than Buc-ee's & Rudy's. And you get more for what you pay. I love this place.
Fed 10 hungry girls for $85 and they were completely full and satisfied with all of their food preferences. The turkey was super moist and tender. The sausage was perfectly cooked. The brisket was moist and smoky. The BBQ sauce was sweet and spicy and peppery and perfect compliment to the meats. The ribs were better than Salt Lick and we didn't have to wait 2 hours. Thank you for the stellar service and great food. Perfect end to our trip.

Had a great dinner with family. The food is the best I've had in a long time. Can't pick a favorite because it was all great. Thanks for great service and even greater food.
I wants me sum BBQ!. I'll preface by stating that I'm a transplanted Texan and not a huge fan of BBQ. With that out of the way, this is BBQ to get excited about - really! Esposa and daughter brought home combos featuring turkey, brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. The turkey and ribs were excellent: juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The turkey was especially surprising. Both we well above average. The pulled pork was juicy and tender, but no better than other BBQ joints. The brisket was a bit tough and dry, but still flavorful. That turkey though, damn good! Topped it all off with some of the absolute best BBQ sauce I've had anywhere: tangy, very spicy, and a bit salty! The green beans seriously kicked my ass. Potato salad was average. Overall: VERY GOOD. RECOMMENDED.
Gatorriffic. I've finally was able to visit this BBQ restaurant, that I've heard about. I've read the reviews (most of them) but decided to see for myself. I've arrived on a Saturday around 3PM. The exterior of the restaurant was very eye appealing, and the drive-thru window was cool to see (because not many BBQ restaurant have drive-thru). Inside the place was pretty dead. I was thinking because the lunch rush had just finished. But during our time there, several people were coming in. I really like how they use electric kettles to keep their BBQ sauces (Regular & Cajun) heated. Our ticket consist of an order of Fried Alligator , Chicken Fried Steak, and 2 Meat (Brisket & Pork Ribs) plates.
The Fried Alligator plate consist of large (not small like others) crunchy battered nuggets. The flavor and the meat texture was excellent. The 2 sides for this plate was mashed potatoes (with skin) / gravy and cream of corn (which was addicting). I was please with this plate, with only a couple of suggestions to add; offer a Cajun Alligator and Catfish combo and Fried Alligator as an appetizer with some Cajun sauce.
The Chicken Fried steak was a large portion of nicely crunchy battered steak. You know when you have a great plate in front of you when you don't need a knife to cut your steak. The gravy was nice and peppery, but could of use a bit of flavor (possibly chicken).
The 2 Meat plate (Brisket & Pork Rib) was to my surprise was the least expensive of the 3 (under $8)! The brisket was very (if not too lean) lean to the point that I had to add BBQ sauce to help it down. It did have a nice park and rings to it but lack a bit a flavor to it. The pork rib could of use a couple of more hours cooking so that I didn't have to pull/tear the meat away from the bone. And again the pork could use a bit more of flavor.
Good food. VERY reasonably priced. If anything you get the better deal. Two meats and two sides for $7.20. Domestic beers are $1.99. Can't beat it. General manager came around and was very friendly and looked happy to be there. I live pretty far from here but am happy to make the 30 min trip for some good food. Staff was also very polite.
Good overall visit. Went today for a late lunch and had the 3 meat plate with brisket, sausage, and turkey. All the meats were flavorful and enjoyable. Chili beans were okay, too much mayo in the potato salad for my taste. Pickles, onions, and jalapenos at the self service bar were a good addition to the meal and liked both types of BBQ sauce. Will definitely go back again. Interior is very nice for a BBQ joint!
The meats are really good! The mashed potatoes taste like the ones we used to eat in the cafeteria in elementary school. The green beans were not good, either. I'll be going back, but will get some meat to go and make my own sides.
Tried the Two meat combo with two sides, cup of gumbo with sweet tea. The brisket was smoked properly. Had a nice smoke ring and was very moist and tender. It was a little bland.... They should add more salt and pepper to their rub; Sausage was very tasty, had a nice smoke flavor and was leaner than most. The sausage gets a good grade. Both barbecue sauces are excellent. Potato salad has good flavor but way too much mayonnaise. Seasoning was fine but I'd probably add more potatoes to the mixture. Gumbo was outstanding! Fried okra was outstanding! The pico de gallo (on the condiment bar) was good but if they add 50% more tomato, it would be outstanding. Jalapeños and pickles were good too. This restaurants food is not quite as good as Rudy's or Smokey Mo's; however, as the staff gets more experience, they could ultimately surpass both and become the top barbecue joint in town. They are far better than Two Bros and Blanco BBQ. The restaurant and kitchen are pristine and the waitstaff is outstanding. Overall... I give them a thumbs up! I'll be returning. Enjoy!
Nice Recovery. Tried these guys out yesterday and it was a down and up experience. Did the drive-threw with some reservation from reading this site. Got the combo 1/2 rack of ribs and one meat (Brisket) that came with 2 sides (baked beans and fried okra, both good but nothing special) and added a pound of sausage. Was the only one in the drive-threw and it was a short wait, only problem was they forgot the brisket. Called to let them know and they were quick to apologize and offer a "good sized" portion if I came back to get it. We ate what had which was quite good and then I went back and indeed got a half pound of brisket and a piece of pecan pie. I was happy with the recovery, but I live close. Check those to go orders. I will be back.
Great Food. We ate there Feb 20th and were blown away by the food and the service. The Turkey and Brisket were great. We enjoyed the Baked beans since they didn't have pork which neither of us eat. The sauce was a bit sweet for my taste. I prefer a Memphis type sauce with more of a vinegar bite.
The staff is excellent and very courteous.
We have both eaten at the CIA in upstate NY and can see why the chef knows his profession.
Good BBQ. After months of anticipation, I finally got to try the food at Choke Canyon and it did not disappoint. I decided to get the family pack #1 (1.5 lbs meat, .5 lb. sausage, 3 sides, bread, pickles, and onions). Too bad they were out of pulled pork, turkey, and pork ribs at 7 PM on Sunday. They allowed me to substitute .5 lb of baby back ribs for the pork ribs. I was very impressed with the way they packed the take out order. All meats were packed in a large foil pan and the sides were packed in a drink holder. The brisket was very tender and flavorful. I thought it was unusual that the sausage was gray inside with a pink exterior. The baby back ribs were tender and delicious. The smokey bbq beans tasted like baked beans, a pleasant surprise from the traditional pinto beans. I liked the green beans and tomatoes because the beans were not canned. The cole slaw was very fresh and crunchy. I was impressed with the quality and taste of the food. I can't wait to try their pulled pork and turkey. Note: The family packs must be ordered through the drive through. Inside the restaurant, the hostess told me that I could order the family pack but when I got to the cashier, I was told that I had to go through the drive through.
Best so far in San Antoino. Having been a judge for a couple of years at the Memphis in May BBQ contest, I have been disappointed by the BBQ offered in San Antonio, UNTIL NOW. This place is my pick for the best in SA. I had the pulled pork and brisket (marble cut). The pulled pork was not sauced at all and it didn't need it. I hate when operators think that pulled pork must be drowning in sauce, let the customers decide to sauce or not. The pork was moist, not overly smoked and just about perfect.
When ordering brisket, always ask for the marble cut as the flat cut is usually dry. The brisket was perfectly cooked and it really did melt in my mouth.
The sides were fine and with a couple of surprises. One, they offered stuffing which was moist and tasty, second instead of the usual texmex style red beans, they offered BBQ baked beans. They beans were, although canned, great compared to most BBQ places in SA, but could have been spiced up a bit with more pepper and perhaps some pulled pork bits included in the mix to make them more interesting.
Both sauces (regular and spicy) worked for me, but could use a bit more depth in flavor. This is not to say that it's bland, just not a home run.
I asked about the breakfast menu which included mostly breakfast tacos and sandwiches, the manager told me these are available until 10:30 but only via the drive thru window. I'm sorry, I am one who do not like waiting in a line of cars when you can simply park, run in and get your food, leaving the line of cars behind me.
I believe this place will be extremely successful, until the next great BBQ place opens. If they stay alert, keep paying attention to details and make a couple of tweaks here and there, they will do really well!
Good food. Been waiting for you to open---stopped by--bought one pound of brisket to take home for sandwiches. It was delicious !! Now planning to return with friends for lunch or dinner.
Great food!. Stopped by today for some food. I had the turkey with mashed potatoes and green beans. My husband had the chicken fried steak. Both were delicious. Moist and tender with lots of flavor.
Service was excellent. Restaurant was clean. This area is lacking in restaurants very close by (without having to go into Stone Oak proper), so this is a welcome addition to the area.
Can't wait to go back.
PS... read the other reviews. For the guy who said he stopped by for an invitation only gathering (without an invitation) and wasn't served ... what do you expect? The big sign out front saying "Opening on Super Bowl Sunday" might have been your first clue they weren't open.
