Diamond head general store does a good job making you feel like your back on the big island. Portion size and island flavors.
They always have specials to keep you coming back.

Pro Tip: know that they automatically charge 15% tip and each dish is expensive and the plates are huge.
We got the Mochiko chicken loco moco and Kahlua Pork with cabbage to split between 3 people and it destroyed us. We could only finish 2/3 of the food. I'm usually a big eater but I wanted to save room for the mochi desserts but wow the food is so delicious but heavy I could not finish either dish.
The salty dishes were the best. Desserts were good but standard though the Maladada was unique and tasty

Pricey but very tasty - lots of foodstuffs/snacks/drinks from HI that would otherwise be hard to find

The Food
Discovered Morning Wood a few years back, but they closed during the pandemic. They are now reopened, but more of a take out within a Diamond Head General Store. I came back to visit with a friend around lunch time. One thing I noticed is they do not have some of their breakfast items anymore like pancakes or omelette. We ended up ordering their Loco Moco, which is a sunny side egg over beef patty over rice. The meal, or dish if you will, came packaged in a box. (There is no table service, but there are bar seats, but everything is take out.) The Loco Moco is not bad. The egg was nicely cooked, and the sauce goes well with the rice. But the beef patty was a bit burnt. Felt like their quality degraded a bit after reopening.
The Miscellaneous
Morning Wood is still located in the same building as before. There is still a small area for parking, but otherwise it is street parking. The interior changed quite a lot though. The center got converted to store shelves, while the surrounding area is food order and seating. As mentioned before, the menu has changed with some items removed and some added. They have Hawaiian Style Shaved Ice now. The price also increased, but not so much the quality though. Hopefully they will expand back to what they used to be, along with more menu items.

Morning wood restaurant converted to a convenience store / take out place. They still got it. You could still eat there but chairs and table space are limited. They do not serve you so you’ll have to grab your own seat.
The food is delicious! I had the loco moco with beef patty. Spicy, flavorful. Ugh. Gonna drive there now to eat at home.
They will charge you 15% service fee dine in or take out.

The "Almost Famous" fried chicken and donuts!!! Holy sh*^, it's amazing. So super crispy on the outside and tender and MOIST on the inside, exactly the way good fried chicken should be. The Moco Loco was on point, the gravy holding it all together. Come here, wait in line, you won't be upset.

Prices are large, portions are large, flavor is only medium. They couldn't add an extra portion of Portuguese sausage, which was regrettable. If you looking for somewhere to get you in the Hawaii mood, this is it. But if you're looking for flavors that are in the ball park but not quite there, then this place is okay I guess.

First time come here on a Saturday lunchtime, putting the name on the waiting list and waited for almost 2 hours. The environment is pretty simple and delightful. Ordered a steak, sesame muffin and also appetizer muffin. Everything was so delicious and super super presentable. Totally worth the two hour wait. We were so blown away by how beautiful and tasty the food was.
Second time come here on a Thursday lunchtime. Waiting for about 10 minutes, and got a table for five people. Realize they don’t serve steak during the week time, what a pity. Order some new dishes, still very very presentable, for the taste was just OK. Maybe my expectations were too high because of how good the food were at the first time.
