Took a stab after looking at the menu and pictures. WOW, they didn't disappoint, the food was fantastic. Everything was cooked perfectly. Our waitress was great, I'm looking forward to going there for breakfast.
The food here is great and I'll definitely go back for the food. However the atmosphere/interior of the restaurant needs some work.
I had the house omelette and I highly recommend that. It was very good and everyone's food was great. The only very minor complaint on the food was that we had to pay extra to have eggs any other way than scrambled. The pitcher of mimosa and the bloody Mary was great as well.
We had a group of 8 and couple kids, and the staff was able to accommodate us by putting tables together. The staff was very nice and friendly but with a big group, one minor changes in orders were missed.
The atmosphere definitely has a dive bar feel to it and the interior just needs some work done. A lot of the lights were not working and the bathroom was very outdated and dirty looking. No changing table either so we took our kid out to the car to get changed instead.
Overall if you overlook the interior, the food here is amazing. I would recommend takeout vice dinning in until the interior is redone.
Went here on a late Monday night after flights were rescheduled and so was pretty tired, needed easy food. Glad this place was open, the grilled cheese was fab as was the sweet potato fries. The cervice however contained bitter cucumber which ruined it, the staff were lovely about it and didn't add it to the bill, realising their error.
It's a blue collar hang out spot. I have enjoyed everything I have gotten here. Mainly I get the breakfasts and the chicken wings and the burgers. I work a few doors over and its always nice to come see Ellen and the crew. I absolutely love the work done on the wings, clean hot oil... excellent staff every time. Got the wings and a small side salad for lunch this time.
Dive bar of the highest order, and I say that lovingly. Fun place, excellent servers, and it’s a bar that serves food.
The breakfast americano was perfectly cooked and not of inhumane proportions. I was happy and full without feeling overstuffed.
Prices were very reasonable, especially in an area where thing seem to be going upscale.
I look forward to having some drinks there at night.
The food and service were excellent. I had the coconut pineapple pancakes and they were Great! My husband got the apple cinnamon and said they tasted like apple pie. One granddaughter had chocolate chip pancakes that were overflowing with chips and the other had French toast which she raved about. There are games also available which the kids enjoyed. The atmosphere inside is a bit dive bar but I marked it down a bit because the bathroom needed cleaned.
I had never been to Point Loma and while looking for somewhere to eat I didn't just want fast food so I looked up small restaurants and Point Break Cafe popped up. Great service, good atmosphere, and there Tuna Sandwich was the bomb with a side of coleslaw. I'm sure the rest of the menu is good aswell.
Great breakfast before sailing in San Diego. Have a range of foods to choose from. Chicken fried steak is amazing.
The blueberry pancakes are really tasted.
I went to point break cafe once a day for a week, while staying in San Diego.
My boyfriend and I went to one of our favorite restaurants to take our puppy. One of the few restaurants that allows their 4 legged patrons indoors. I love the Yappy hour (their dog) menu and the human food is delicious too. The waitress (we usually get) is a dog lover. She gives your dog as much attention as their owners if not more. She buys treats from Petsmart to share with her 4 legged customers.
Nice little cafe/restaurant with lots of menu choices. Friendly and attentive waitress, good food, large portions, and decent prices. Wonderful fresh coffee!
We visited again in 2023 and we are happy we did! We brought friends with this time and they loved it too! A hidden gem among hundreds of options. Everyone was fully satisfied with their food and the service!
I do not leave reviews. I feel this one is absolutely necessary.
As one approaches the cafe a lack of spatial awareness can prove difficult to find the entrance to this establishment. For those who prove unworthy in such awareness you must first complete your lap around the building to enter. Not that I had to do that, of course.
Upon walking in you are hit with a perfect blend of hometown diner and beachside dive bar. A breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu selection paired with a full bar gives the patron a wide selection of both sustenance, and should you feel saucy, a bit of debauchery. While it may have just been luck, a TV playing an interview with Keanu Reeves helps to secure not only the vibe of the cafe but also helps you settle into the name.
After you seat yourself you are promptly greeted by a server, and should you be in karma's good graces, that server will be Ellen. As she immediately welcomes you with hospitality you could only find elsewhere in a southern mother's home she is quick to provide answers to questions and details about the specials.
The worst part of this restaurant is deciding what you want to eat. From homestyle and Mexicali breakfasts to the burgers and sandwiches that are sure to grab your attention, it is initially best to follow your heart and plan another trip to eat. Quality delicious food is in fact the name of the game, and Point Break may in fact be writing the playbook.
I got the tamales with the tomatillo sauce, a recommendation from none other than Ellen herself. The food she presented was almost enough to satiate my appetite from looks alone. Upon my first bite I was sent into another realm. I believe it was the great warrior poet Britney who said; "with the taste of your lips I'm on a ride." I believe she in fact replaced the words "tamales from Point Break Cafe" with the word "lips" just for the sake of the melody, but I know what she really meant.
The tamale was so well crafted my abuelita herself would give her stamp of approval (a feat harder to earn than a third Michelin star, by the way.) A perfect texture hits your mouth, the cheesiness gives that savory, melty, fatty flavor we Americans so crave. Finally, the sauce. Oh the sauce. Tangy, a little sweet, and absolutely powerful flavors first hit your olfactory senses and then your tastebuds, a 1-2 combo you're actually honored to receive. A sauce so robust my father exclaimed "Oh!" in a manner I've never seen a man deliver before.
As you enjoy your meal you are also blessed with the general presence of the aforementioned Ellen. While she greets other guests and takes order she does not leave you behind, rather, she is the vessel that will deliver the entire experience. You will feel welcome, you will feel loved, you will taste wonders beyond comprehension, and you will yearn to go back as soon as possible.
Overall, the vibe was impeccable. I know I could enjoy a meal with my family or go and get absolutely silly with my hoodrat friends. I know I will eat good, and should I be fortunate enough to be served by Ellen I will live good in that moment as well.
Please eat here. Nay, please experience here.
Cordially,
A random stranger on the internet whose opinion you should care about in this one and only instance.
What a great experience here . We felt so welcomed and just the overall vibe felt really good even seeing the manager how she got along with the workers made me like this place even more . And the fact that food was good made it even better 😋 I had the steak and eggs for breakfast and nachos for a late night snack and I definitely recommend both .
What a find! I've lived in Southern California all my life and I never knew it was there. Great food killer drinks good music. Not a place to take kids. Big portions and reasonable prices.
Service was impeccable
Food was divine we had beef nachos and steak sandwich along with drinks. All the food was really good. You won't go wrong with their steak sandwich. It's cooked to perfection and served on a toasted bun along with delicious thick cut fries. Yes real steak not sliced shredded beef. Two beer battered onion rings with ranch.
This place is AWESOME!! Our waiter explained that it opened about nine years ago - replacing Bollweevil. They kept some of the motif and it's something to experience. The breakfast menu offers a lot of choice, but come with an empty stomach😁. They serve breakfast and lunch and they also have a Happy Hour. It's not pricey either.
Cool local venue to dine and sip a pint. Great breakfast items. Always a stop on my visit. Thanks as always!
Cheers!
We were welcomed immediately and received excellent service. The chicken fried steak and eggs were delicious!! 10 out of 10 recommend
Delicious food. My son wasn't thrilled with the bar atmosphere but ate all of his food without hesitation!
