As a vegan, I'm used to picking the one vegetarian item on a Mexican menu that looks easiest to veganize and ordering that. There were so many options for me here! I ordered the vegan California burrito. French fries in a burrito? Holy cow, that's genius. I'm still full five hours later. The meat eaters in my group enjoyed theirs just as much. Loved this place!
My son located this fantastic restaurant since almost half of us were either vegan & vegetarian. This restaurant was so good and treated us like family. We were served by Mr. Hugo himself and his wonderful fiancé (we wish them well). All the dishes we selected were made to everyone’s likings and Mr. Hugo made us some specialty dishes which surprised us in various flavors. Mr. Hugo was so kind to make some of his special dishes so we can take some home to our home State. I highly recommend this warm friendly atmosphere restaurant to you and serves every appetite, young, old and in between. We will definitely be back and you should too.

Food is excellent. A place where everyone can go regardless of thier food choices! My friend and I shared and were stuffed. We had a very leisurely meal, and got to visit without being rushed out. Large and spacious room. Darling outdoor patio. Long history in the community makes for more caring. .Used to be Ranchos, but I love it even more. Good job Hugo.

What a wonderful place! Let’s start with the fact that the staff is wonderfully friendly and the service fantastic. Add to that the plethora of Vegan options on the menu (literally dozens), and the dishes bursting with flavor, and you have a perfect place for vegans and non-vegans alike. We had the tofu enchilada with vegan cheese, a pineapple tamale, and birria taco made of jackfruit and mushrooms (it was a daily special). Everything was stellar and the margarita flight is also highly recommended. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Once upon a time I was randomly in San Diego and wanted to see the sunset. I was with my vegan friend and she was hungry, and Hugo’s was the closest spot that had vegan food to where we were. She loved her food but this review isn’t about her. I had the surf and turf burrito and I really don’t know how to explain what this burrito did to me. It was a religious experience, and I’m an atheist. It was a flavorsplosion in my mouth. I was not worthy nor ready.
But it doesn’t end there. For the next 3 years, on a boring day in Utah where I live, I’d dream of this burrito. I tried to find somewhere local that could do it, and they all palled in comparison. But today? Today I made it back to San Diego and today I was reunited with my one true love: the surf and turf. I thought maybe I made it up in my mind to be better than it actually was, and somehow it exceeded even those expectations.
Hugo or whoever you are, chefs kiss to you for this burrito that will haunt me all my days.
And to the rest of you, you’re doing yourself a disservice staying in the main part of OB. Go try this burrito. You won’t regret it.
Good food, especially the Enchiladas trio is definitely to try for. Vegan and vegetarian options are great as well. The staff is kind and friendly. The ambiance is also relaxing and great inside and outside. Service is fairly quick.
Be mindful that the credit card service charge is there. Equally cash discount does exist but not much.
Tons and tons of vegan and vegetarian options. Portions were very large. The margarita flight was delicious.
Love Hugo’s! The food was fantastic. We ordered vegan tacos and nachos and hot damn they were great! The guy behind the counter was really cool and loved the atmosphere even though I did take out.

Hugo's Cocina , the family-owned Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Ocean Beach, San Diego, is a great place for tasty Mexican food, whether in a small group or large. The owner, Georgina, and her staff, are outstanding.
The menu at Hugo's Cocina features a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, as well as SEVERAL vegan and vegetarian options. The food is made fresh to order, and the portions are generous. The prices are also very reasonable.
We had a reunion of nearly 50 of our college friends at this place a couple of weeks back. Georgina worked with us on the menu, catering to every group needs, on the seating, the decor and other arrangements. She was proactive in suggesting options that would make the experience unique. Georgina and her staff were friendly and attentive despite the large group.
We would definitely recommend Hugo's Cocina to anyone looking for a great Mexican meal in Ocean Beach.

If you havent tried this place youre missing out!! Top favorite restaurant of all time. The food is exceptional. Tons of vegan options using soy chorizo (bomb) and vegan Carne asada(yet to try). Their frozen mango margaritas are to die for !!! They have chunks of real mango in them.. it tastes like a smoothie but better. They also have amazing regular smoothies. The food and fruit is so fresh! The atmosphere is really neat. It's vibrant, welcoming, laid back, colorful. Not to mention you get free chips and salsa while ordering and waiting on food. Even that is so so good. Seriously could not stress enough.
Cute traditional Mexican that does sit down or takeaway. I had a nopales (cactus) taco, a side of black beans, and a pineapple tamale. The first two items were average - kinda bland - but there are tons of vegetarian options, which I appreciate, so 4 stars instead of 5 for a place I really enjoyed.
Special shout out though for the pineapple tamale, which was amazing — definitely give it a try. I would drive across town to have it again! It’s sweet, and listed in the menu with the entrees, but it could totally work as a dessert as far as I’m concerned. Delicious!!
I went here for breakfast and started with an amazing Mexican style coffee with cinnamon. I ordered a pancake combo with eggs, potatoes and turkey bacon. The potatoes were seasoned with a great blend of spices and the bacon was crisp and mouth watering. Service was excellent, as well. The decor was fun — I especially liked the Mexico tourism posters.
We just got the opportunity to eat here and it is overall just phenomenal, the staff is so nice the horchata is homemade and all the food is so fresh and delicious the portions were perfect and I can’t wait to come back highly recommend
This has to be the most vegan-friendly Mexican restaurant we have ever been to Hugo's offers vegan cheese, vegan chicken, vegan chorizo and even vegan fish which was so spectacularly prepared in their fish tacos They are horchata is to die for.
The portions are really huge and the food is not as spicy as I expected perhaps it was meant for tourists however make sure you ask for the hot sauce and which are all homemade.
They do take out and they deliver and frankly it is one of the best Mexican vegan restaurants we have ever been to.
I picked this place at random only to find out later that it's a favourite for several friends. The staff is so warm and friendly and the food is amazing.
When I go back to San Diego, I'm going back here for supper again. Every time.

Very good service and lots of character. They have a separate vegan/vegetarian menu with loads of options. We sat on the patio which was really cute and surrounded by plants. Down to earth, not expensive, highly recommend for a chill spot in Ocean Beach.
Great variety of Mexican, vegan and vegetarian items. The sweet potato tacos were delicious. Vegan "fish" taco, not so much. The "fish" was made with peanuts and had a very distinctive Non-fish flavor. Was still ok. The salsa and guacamole was good. Mike wasn't bad, but not the best I've had.
