It's my favorite restaurant in the world. The food, the service, and the atmosphere are all top-notch and yet unpretentious. It's the first restaurant I've been to where a server refers to a dish as a "flavor bomb"...and it absolutely was. For my money, no trip to San Francisco is complete without a meal at Stones Throw.

one of the best meals i've had in a while. their menu is creative, the flavors are distinctive and delicate and they make each dish. their snacks menu - i could not fault - i had every one of them. a friend of mine had the duck - i'm not a fan but this dish was awesome. the server had some great suggestions on the wine and whilst i think $60 is a bit steep - as we drank the wine - it was a great selection, great taste for the food we ate. The server was great, service was awesome! this place gets it right! I'll be going back!

I love this place. Their dishes are all so creative and sophisticated. I love details and they surprise me with how much attention they put into small details to create a balance flavor and texture for each dish. I usually don't have dessert but I have to each time I visit here. Also the restaurant has high ceilings and they are not trying squeeze in so many tables like most SF restaurants do so even when it is crowded, I still can hear my friends. A+ all the way!!

I have been there once for dinner and once for their monthly special prix fixe menu. Both were outstanding meals. The May prix fixe (five courses) was one of the best meals in my life. They have an extensive beer and wine list. The staff were extremely service oriented and welcoming on both visits.

Omygod, what a great place. A line for breakfast at 10:45 a speaks volumes. The salmon mousse is decadent, and their tater tots never had better.. they are homemade. What flavor, blended minced potatoes, onion and seasoning cooked to perfection. The beverage of choice was their own concoction a light fruity blend with just the right amount of bubble...a "I want to go back" for more kind of place. All staff very pleasant and friendly.

Passed this place while riding the cable car and googled it as it looked the kind of place we were looking for as dinner that evening. Great choice as the food was awesome - best meal we had during that trip to San Francisco and one of my favorites ever. Highly recommended.

This was a very nice dining experience. Stones Throw is unpretentious yes as good as any restaurant in San Francisco. It was our first time and certainly not the last.

Great food and intriguing wine

Terrific dinner with our children and spouses. Delicious and varied small plates and entrees, and a wine list the reaches less known areas in Austria, Spain, South America as well as unusual California choices. Classy modern yet relaxed and informal.

From the decor to the food, this place is a winner! We were in SF for a weekend and tried a variety of restaurants. This was, by far, my favorite. The melon/Baratta salad and chicken liver mousse were amazing, as was the Waygu beef. Even the simple tomato soup was great. Everything was just very fresh and of the highest quality. Will be back!

Chef Halverson is definitely applying his 4-star background into some unique combinations and creations in the reasonably priced menu ...

Delicious food! Started off with the duck pate and summer squash starter. Both were so good, we decided to get the heirloom tomato starter as well! Octopus was tender in the middle, and had great accompanying flavours. The orange dessert was a very good elevation of a typical creamsicle, and the cake had a great blackberry sorbet to cut through the sweetness of the chocolate! All in all, great meal!

Food quality 5/5 Food was delicious, served perfect temperature and timing was good between dishes. Atmostphere 5/5 Very European style restaurant great for taking dates or meeting SO's parents etc. Comfortable and homey feeling while still remaining upscale Price 5/5 Reasonable for the food quality and taste Unique* Deserts here are styled and adult versions of childhood favourites. The restaurant asks you at the end if you could make a suggestion for a future desert and will invite you back to try it if they pick and make your suggestion.

Located in a quiet section of Russian Hill. Once a month they do an invitational Chefs tasting. Really enjoyed the Michelin rated Commis and Hawker Fare chef last night. Menu included Rock Shrimp Goi, Pork Sausage and veal cheeks. Desert was a mango rice pudding. Each of the 5 dishes was paired with a nice wine. Mostly whites but one red. Service was excellent and am already looking forward to seeing who next months chef will be.

A great place for food and drink. Family style is a great way to go here as all their dishes are easy to share and it's worth trying as many things as possible. I recommend the PAN-SEARED STRIPED BASS, SQUID INK CONCHIGLIE PASTA and the BRANDT FARMS PRIME BAVETTE STEAK

Try the puffed potato, steelhead trout and da burger (see the photos). Gets busy so please make a reservation even on weekday evenings. Portion size is not huge so be prepared to order a snack/starter and a main per person. Came as a party of 4 for dinner. Had di Stefano burrata (I always love my burrata cheeseball), duck pate and mousse (no idea where the mousse went but the duck pate was good), puffed potato and eggs (one of my favorite here, potato ball with eggy dip), squid ink pasta (I wasn't a fan of this, nothing fancy), charred spanish octopus (get it for the sake of the novelty, tasty and chewy too), steelhead trout (looks like salmon actually but it is not, prepared very well, soft, moist, flavorful), "da burger" (burger with sesame bread and beef and cheese, really loved this one too). Be prepared to spend money. Had a bottle of brunello red wine for USD88. Total price USD61 per pax for a group of 4 (including tax and tips). Did not have space in the tummy for dessert.

Not perfect. We came here for their three course breakfast, which is bread+savory/sweet spreads, then your choice of entree, then doughnuts for dessert. Come hungry because it is a lot of food. Breads were the best part of the meal, the spreads are an excellent variety and all delicious. The entrees leave a little bit to be desired - very heavy for breakfast fare, and used a tad too much oil to cook. The fried chicken as pictured had a good crisp on it, but the lack of a spoon made it hard to drizzle gravy onto it. And I remain confused as to how I am supposed to eat the poached egg - it was a good egg, sure, but was I supposed to mix it with the gravy...? Doughnuts were good, but I didn't get a picture. Anyway, service was impeccable, water constantly refilled inobstructively. Overall good place to get breakfast and catch up with friends since it takes time for the service of the courses, but come hungry.

Went for brunch on a Sunday. Food and service were excellent. Bread was fantastic. There's a good variety of fresh breads in a basket. I had the fried chicken and egg brunch. It was wonderful. The chicken was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. The gravy wasn't too heavy. The egg was soft on the inside. Delicious. It was a great experience.

First of all, the service is excellent, not only courteous but also friendly. From the hostess to the waiters. The place has a nice decor and is spacious. The food was well prepared, interesting and well presented. We loved that it was great for sharing, specially the "snacks" that are sor of appetizers. An over all very good experience, and I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Great place for a date! Open kitchen, slightly dim but not too dim lighting, nice wine list and impeccable service. I would give 5 stars for service. All the staff from the receptionist to server to manager were all extremely helpful and friendly. They also give you 5% off if you take an Uber to the restaurant instead of driving since it's really difficult to find a parking space around there. I thought that was really considerate of them. Although 5% isn't a lot but it's enough to incentivize you to not bring your car. As for the food - my favorites were the oysters (very garlicy sauce...love garlic!), potato and eggs (has some sour cream and onion in the sauce, the dish gave me an orgasm in my mouth), soft shell crab (also a perfect combo of crunchiness and smoothness of the avocado), and the key lime pie was to die for. My only complaint about the place is that food isn't served efficiently. Between appetizer and small bites we had a wait of 15-20 min, and between small bites and entree was another 30-40. So by the time we got to the entree, we were already full since the food settled in my tummy already. But Some people do enjoy this, gives you time to chat between courses. I'm just someone who enjoys getting dish after dish, so it all depends on your preference.

I have only been here for brunch, but both times was great. I love the soft scrambles eggs with whipped ricotta and the spicy tomato baked eggs. My boyfriend loves the burger and the doughnuts are the perfect sweet treat. My only complaint is their style of serving the bottle of mimosa. They keep the bottle of sparkling wine in an ice bucket on a main center table, not on the table you're actually eating at, so you have to wait for your waiter to refill your glass each time. Its nice to have an attentive waitstaff but I also like having the option to pour my own glass of a bottle I purchased.

Great service and yummy food. I had a poached trout. The sauce was something I never had before. The herb sprinkled on top was also new to me. Enjoyed a lot. The portion was not so big, so order some appetizers if you come here hungry. (My friend ordered a cheese burger, which was smallish and came with 7 tater tots)

Our party of three had a 6 pm dinner reservation on a busy Saturday evening. We were seated promptly and offered beverages. Each interaction with staff was friendly and accommodating. The server was knowledgeable and was able to beverages, appetizers, and entrees based on our likes and dislikes. The ambience is a bit unassuming for SF, where most new restaurants seem to be over-striving to achieve that "casual elegance." Instead, Stone's Throw focuses on the food, drinks, and experience over environment.

We took a group of 25 to Stones Throw for a team dinner. James was super great to work with leading up to this, and was really responsive over email. They served our entire meal family style, which was perfect. Their meal changes regularly so I sadly can't find the name of the dish I loved, but it was some sort of black-colored curly pasta. So good! Overall great option for large or small groups.

Pan seared Bass and Bavette steak are stars. The service and staff here are outstanding and attention to detail and your dietary needs is the best. The interior is rustic, simple, and tastefully done. Great place for dinner for two or a group.

This had been on my list for a while, and finally got to try it last Thursday with a group of friends. Service was very good - friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. Food was good. We split the four appetizers/starters they had on the menu - I liked the sturgeon mouse a lot. My husband and I split the duck and it was pretty good, though a bit tougher than I like. That said the portions were hearty and splitting it (along with the appetizers) was definitely enough food to satisfy me. I really wanted to try the pea soup too (not sure if it was served hot or cold, though I was hoping the latter!), but didn’t get a chance to. For dessert, we had the PB&J doughnuts - though they were really beignets; our friends had the choco-tacos. The portion size on the desserts was smaller than expected, but were pretty tasty.
