As an udon lover, I always look forward to being near Japantown so I can go to Udon Mugizo. Sometimes it’s crowded, but I love that they have Yelp waitlist which makes the process super simple as you can browse the mall while waiting for your table. Went Sunday afternoon and there was no wait for 2 people, other times I’ve waited 30-40 minutes.
All of the udon dishes I’ve had have never disappointed. Beyond udon, you must try the mushroom tempura. So crispy and a light batter. My other fave is the beef donburi. The thinly sliced meat enables a nice level of crispiness which makes this one of the better beef donburi dishes I’ve had. So good.
Yesterday, tried the Mentai Udon which reminded me of a white sauce pasta, very creamy with a unique and rich taste. I liked the uni udon more than this one but it appears to no longer on the menu. Maybe seasonal.
Service is also quick and attentive, thank you Udon Mugizo for such a great dining experience.
The service was quick and friendly. The colors and feel was light and welcoming. Ordered the Beef Sukiyaki Nabeyaki Udon Large. The flavor of the broth was average but nothing amazing. The beef was tender and well prepared. The broth was hot and keep everything warm throughout the meal.
I would go back and try something different but I wouldn’t get the same thing again it just lacked the wow factor to me. Everything else was top notch. Restrooms are only available in the mall not the restaurant.
Tried out their Curry Udon and Niku Udon and they were very good! We ordered each in large size and it was the perfect serving.
The curry was not too thick so it doesn't feel salty or "too much", the udon was nice and chewy and the broth in the Niku udon was very rich and smooth in texture.
Came here last minute before closing time to try this spot out as I was in town just for a few days. The Salmon Spinach Cream Sauce Udon was excellent — really enjoyed it. The staff was super friendly as well. Would strongly recommend for all Udon enthusiasts if you're in the Japantown area.
There was no wait time before noon. Really enjoyed the udon noodles made in the house. The service was prompt. The food came quickly for our hot Nabeyaki and cold Niku Bubake udons. It was very filling for our regular size portions. Highly recommended.
To be honest, I initially intended to leave a negative review for the food. However, Michelle completely transformed my experience :)
She genuinely cares about the diners and noticed I wasn't enjoying my initial order. Michelle waived the first order and assisted me in selecting a more satisfying dish. This time, I found something better to savor.
Her extensive knowledge of the menu was evident as she adeptly recommended dishes that suited various tastes, providing detailed explanations.
Throughout my dining experience, Michelle checked on me several times to ensure the food aligned with my preferences and that I was enjoying myself.
A proficient server like Michelle can truly be the linchpin in maintaining the restaurant's reputation🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I love the flavor of their mentai udon! Rich and creamy. I wouldn’t say the udon quality is the best I’ve ever had but this is up there for sf. If you’re craving for udon, highly recommend this place! Their Niku one is pretty good too but their mentai one is more special.
This has got to be my new favorite spot to eat in Japan Town. The service was kind and they were quick to serve you your food, the restaurant itself was very cozy and calm and didn't have too many children or tourists, and the food was AMAZING! Definitely try out their Tempura Udon. Apart from the few minutes wait time (for me it was only about 15 minutes even though I was told it would be 23) everything was such an amazing experience. 10/10 would highly recommend.
An absolute must visit when in the area, the mentai udon is incredible and they have my favorite curry udon anywhere.
The sides are great too. I don't even like sweet potato but their tempura one is worth trying.
I just wish they were open earlier.
We arrived 15 minutes before the 2pm close and they were kind enough to let us in. We ordered the Tonkatsu Udon, medium spicy. It was very delicious. It came with a tempura shrimp, and underneath it were some slices of chasu pork. It also had some green onions, and spinach. The broth was very good with just the right amount of spicy-ness to the broth. The noodles were very tasty and I enjoyed their texture. If you haven’t had udon noodles before they’re a lot thicker than ramen noodles, but they’re really good. We had also ordered an appetizer of shrimp tempura, since we didn’t realize our udon already came with one. The shrimp tempura were great, good size of shrimp and tempura ratio. They weren’t overcooked, and had a nice dipping broth/sauce. Overall it was a very good meal, great experience and service. Will definitely come again!
One of my favorite places for food in SF as they make their udon fresh every day and the broth is always flavorful without being overly oily or artificial tasting! Highly highly recommend if you’re a fan of udon, my personal favorite items on the menu are the Zaru Tempura Udon if you’re looking for a dipping udon (cold) with tempura shrimp and veggies. I also love this Mentai Cream Udon which is pictured (what I ordered today). It’s on the heavier side due to the cream but it’s a super unique take on udon and tastes like a creamy seafood pasta with udon noodles. I get it without Parmesan or green onions due to my preferences. It tastes more Asian with Parmesan but if you want a more Italian tasting dish include the Parmesan by all means!
The reason I gave it a 4 is due to the fact that the restaurant recently closed due to a pest problem and I saw a cockroach while dining there today after they reopened. Clearly the pest problem is still persisting 🤢 I hope they figure it out soon!

Great service, wonderful food and a nice small Japanese restaurant feel. The soups are large and made with high quality ingredients. The beer selection is great too and a nice Sapporo will pair nicely with the meal. Due to how popular it is, you will need to reserve a seat ahead of time, but the wait time usually doesn't exceed 30-40 minutes. Everything from the prices to the wait are well worth it and it's a must for anyone visiting the Japantown malls.
Ordered shrimp tempura donburi, katsu curry udon and one more which I forgot the name. Food was authentic… delicious and filling. Servers are very attentive. But this place, located in Japan town in San Francisco was kinda hot probably because of the lighting fixtures. Food kinda pricy but worth it.
Really good udon! I had their MENTAI CREAM SAUCE UDON with seasoned roe, Parmesan cheese, green onions, sprouts, tempura bits, and nori.
The homemade udon noodles were chewy and soft with a nice bite. It was a good portion for me, I did not finish it. The roe does get a bit lost in the sauce once you mix everything up so I would recommend keeping some on the side to “top up” some extra punch of flavour.
The service was friendly but not overbearing. I came just after 1:00 PM during the week and had no wait at all.
It's a pretty small place in the mall, so make sure you get a reservation.
We shared the tonkatsu udon and assorted tempura, and they were both delicious! The tempura was served with a bowl of dashi that was really nice for dipping the vegetables into. I would definitely recommend this place and the mall in general if you have not been here!
friendly staff with quick service! love the food here so much 😋 amazing dishes and flavour consistently across the menu~
i'm always a huge sucker for the sukiyaki nabeyaki udon + would highly recommend it to anyone 🥰
the weather was super hot this day and there isn't amazing circulation inside which is a bummer 😞
You should try Tonkotsu and Cream Sauce Udon 🍜 here. Have to queue up, just sign in waitlist. Price is affordable. The staffs are friendly and helpful. Udon broth is good but a little salty for me.
