Very similar to oliboli in Tustin which is amazing because this place is so much closer to where I live. Loved every bite. Texture and flavor were worth whatever calories they added. Staff had such friendly and helpful vibes shout out to them. 5 stars must try for any donut lover
As a traveller, it was a welcoming experience that made my day. Warm and friendly personnel. They offer a variety of donuts 🍩🍩🍩 that are fresh and mouthwatering. My only problem was that I only tried 2 of them. I need to go back.
So far this is the best artisanal donut shop I've tried in south OC.
Raised Donuts:
The only knock (other than having to pay artisanal donut prices) during my experience was that the Chocolate Raised was a bit dense and stale for my taste. I did get the Vanilla Bean (raised) too and that one was fantastic -- so I'm going assume the Chocolate was just a bad/sitting batch. The Dutch Apple Pie and Blackberry Fritter (great option if you want a tart bite) also had perfect texture/chew to the dough.
Cake Donuts:
The standouts for me are the Brown Butter Sea Salt, Boysenberry, and Pumpkin Spice (gluten-friendly options are available for all three). The Raspberry Corn Cake was like a cornbread donut with a crispy exterior to the dough, but the raspberry ganache falls flat compared to how great their boysenberry ganache is. Their Old Fashioned also vanishes when compared next to their Brown Butter Sea Salt. Which, if I had pick only one flavor, it would be that Brown Butter Sea Salt.
We're beginning a journey of the top 100 donut shops in the country and JD Flannel is #3! Do I think it's deserved? Well, I haven't tried #1 or #2 yet but these were the best donuts I've ever eaten. Incredible taste, perfect texture on each of the many we tried. Flat out INCREDIBLE!! I love a good donut so have tried many and I was delighted to see a top five shop in the same shopping center as my fav Mexican lunch place for when I'm heading to San Diego. The Universe was smiling. Excellent service from kind people. I understand why others trek down from LA just to have these donuts. I'll be back and soon!! PS My video shows some empty space in the display. I saw them add fresh donuts as they were baked ~ freaking, hot, fresh, amazing!!
Is it overpriced? From an average guys standpoint who’s not used to paying more than $5 for a doughnut, yes. Very simple maple glaze and an Apple fritter set me back just slightly under $10. Add coffee it’ll be over $10.
But the texture of their doughnut was something very special that I haven’t had anything like that before. Maple glaze had a very sharp sweetness level to it and it was just perfect. Apple fritter was nothing much to write home about, but very high quality. Would I go back? Hell yeah, for the maple glaze though.

I’ve not had gluten free donuts this fresh and this good. The owner pulled a couple gluten free donuts straight out of the oven and I thought I went to heaven.
It’s been 15+ years since I’ve had a crispy cream straight out of the oven but this was about as close as you can get. Super kind people. Great customer service. And good to die for. I love that they use a dedicated fryer. I felt so safe there. I really am over the moon at the moment.
Great doughnuts. The bear claw was amazing. We bought 8 and had 1/8th of each outside. The worst was very good the best were amazing. Several glutan free options.
Easily the best donut shop in Southern California. I’ve had many different flavors and never been disappointed. Many great options including vegan and gluten-free. What stands out here is the fresh, homemade ingredients and their ability to get the right amount of sweetness in every donut. The coffee is equally good and pairs well with their delicious donuts.
Be sure to check their website for monthly menus. Even more important, follow them on Instagram for special flavors that pop up for one day only. If you ever see the Apple Bear Claw available, you must try it. Probably the greatest donut I’ve ever eaten. Enjoy!!
Nice little donut shop. Donuts are a bit pricey, but the gluten free and vegan options are absolutely divine. Not at all heavy like gluten free baked goods normally are. They have unique gourmet flavors too
These things are tasty! Tried a few flavors blueberry corn cake was my favorite and a recommendation from the owner. Get 5 of these and what ever else you were planning to get.
Every doughnut is so flavorful and omg I can't get enough. Try as many as you can, they are all worth it. They are nationally ranked and you can see why!!!!

JD Flannel Donuts and Coffee is my new favorite donut shop.
LOCATION
This shop is nestled in the Plaza Del Obispo Shopping Center, just west of the 5 freeway in San Juan Capistrano.
PARKING
There are multiple parking spots available in this plaza. It is shared among the different businesses around it.
ORDERING
I spotted this donut shop on a Friday close to noon and it looked pretty busy. I looked it up on Yelp and decided to come back the following day. I figured there would be a long line given the popularity of this spot so I placed an online order for pickup. When I arrived, there was a line early Saturday morning so I was glad I had a short wait on the PICKUP side. Dave (the co-owner) was there that morning and he helped me with my order! What a friendly guy! I told him that it was my first time visiting his shop, and I was picking up a small box for myself and a separate box for my niece who has food allergies - this would be her first donut!
PACKAGING
Anyway, he made sure that the donuts were carefully packaged. The Gluten-free donuts were in the same box with the Vegan donuts but separated in a bag - very thoughtful! The branding outside the box was as cute as its blue and white gingham interior. I love when businesses put these small details.
TASTE & TEXTURE
The donuts were divine! It’s got a light overall crunch on the outside and a warm cake-like interior. And it wasn’t a heavy texture either nor was it super sweet — it was just right! The texture was almost spongy and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. I loved every single flavor and can’t wait to try more on my next visit! My favorite was actually their Brown Butter Sea Salt - yum!
Overall, I highly recommend JD Flannel Donuts and Coffee. Simply good donuts consciously made with their customers in mind! Come support them and try the donuts for yourselves!
JD Flannel Donuts is by far the best donut shop in San Juan Capistrano! Their donuts are unique, very fresh, and super delicious!! We love that their donuts are made with real ingredients! Today we tried the Boston Cream, the Lemon Blueberry, and the Smoked Apple Fritter. All of them were amazing. We love knowing that JD Flannel Donuts recently partnered up with another of our preferred local spots, The Ecology Center. We definitely recommend JD Flannel Donuts to anybody looking for a from-scratch, tasty treat.

Truly one of the best donut shops in the country. I travel a lot and have made it my thing to try the best donut shops in each city, then do a review on my personal social media. There are lots of really good donut 4 star donut shops in America. However the level of freshness, whole real ingredients, and flavors hits a new level. They also have a variety of GF & Vegan donuts. Their Brown Butter Sea Salt is so unique. Their cake is moist but fluffy, full of flavor, not just a carrier for the toppings. The chocolate icing melts in your mouth. No feeling of fat lining your mouth or a lump in your stomach. They rotate their flavors to always give you something new to look forward to. I don't live in San Juan Capistrano, but every time I visit So Cal I will stop by.
Very good donuts. I mean VERY good. The people are super friendly, the coffee is freshly made and even though it's in a strip mall, sitting outside is a really nice experience. Lots of flavors to choose from, with a rotating array of seasonal goodness.
My wife has to eat Gluten Free. We were in the Laguna area recently and googled gluten-free places to try. JD Flannel popped up in searches and we decided to give it a try. It was located in a strip mall. When we arrived, the tables outside were filled with customers! The staff was friendly and super knowledgeable with their gluten free products. We chose the GF browned butter sea salt and GF apple cider donuts. They were warm, soft, moist, freaking delicious! We hope they keep checking prices to open shop in Meridian :)
Service and donuts were definitely excellent and fast. What was more remarkable was that in our party of 10, we kept talking about the service of one of the owners and how he personally made each of us feel seen and appreciated. He was incredibly personable, friendly, and went well above and beyond. Can’t wait to go back! Please bring one to Denver!
