We were just passing through Santa Fe and decided to give this place a try. I was pleasantly surprised! The food was really good and authentic and the waitress was nice and had a really cute smile. I would definitely come back here the next time i'm passing through Santa Fe again.
A little family joint. Very authentic. Had a couple of new items. We enjoyed our meal. My wife had the blue corn tamale and i had the beef chimichanga. We had pososle, corn and pork side dish, and sopaipilla, fried bread. Both were excellent.
If you have a number of restaurants on your “rotation” of frequent favorites, one visit to El Comal will probably convince you to add it to that rotation. It’s that good! It’s that real! A comprehensive breakfast and lunch-dinner menu is replete with all your favorite New Mexican dishes while a chalkboard lists a handful of daily specials which the wait staff dutifully pushes. Cumin is not used on either the red or green chile.
If you want real deal New Mexican food you have to try this place. Spicy salsa, red, and green chile. As a New Mexico native I can handle spicy and it still had me eating lots of sopapillas with honey. Reminded me of home cooking with a casual environment. The brisket tacos were tender. Even bought some hand made tortillas and salsa to take home.
Great place and the burritos is great choice ! The red chili is a little spicy, maybe a little too spicy so maybe asking for Xmas would be better. Although it is a small restaurant but totally worth the visit.
Very good steak fahitas but only I delicious tortilla. The red dipping sauce for the chips was all hotness, I couldn't tell if the flavor was good. The bean and cheese side was excellent. The sopapilla for dessert was a huge, hot and delicious treat. Service was a little slow but very pleasant.
Hidden Gem! You want the best food you can find and enjoy it in a low key environment where you can be humble and stay under the radar? This has the best food. The margaritas are a touch over the top. Most people are having sodas or iced tea.
El Comal was highly recommended to my family (UTAHNS) by my cousin Thomas- a resident of Santa Fe. (He said it's a Favorite of "locals") When in New Mexico we are always looking for those special dishes with chile.
It's a small diner with BIG FLAVORS! We were OVERWHELMED by the delicious food- from the Carne Adobada w/potatoes & eggs to the Huevos Rancheros and the cheese-topped Papas Rancheras! Their potatoes are a melt in your mouth mystery ( I would love the recipe) AND Let's NOT forget the fresh made-to-order Sopapillas & Tortillas! Some of the BEST I've ever had! We highly recommend El Comal 😀
Great food and very attentive wait staff! I wish I lived closer I'd be there all the time! 😀
Let me say, right out of the gate - you may not want to go in based on the exterior. It’s in an old shopping center. However, the food was amazing. Best guacamole I’ve ever eaten and I make pretty good guacamole. We had beef stewed in cumin paprika and other spices. Amazing. I ordered a sangria thinking I’d get a water glass size, no In a frozen margarita glass. I told the owner about Google reviews and he didn’t seem to understand. Much better than the restaurants I’ve eaten at in the Old Town.
Laid back and super casual, no frills. The salsa from the chips is a little hotter than most. Many of the plates offer sopapilla as an option which is a nice treat. I had a combo plate. It was good, fair priced, simple and homestyle.
Really very nice. Good selection, friendly service.
Excellent food.
Sopapilla that came with the food was delicious.
Tamales, beans, rice, posole, all good!
Salsa plenty spicy.
