I love it here. The food and vibes are always great. I did have a reservation at 7 and was not seated till a little after 730 due to overbooking and how crowded it was. Had a few martinis while waiting so I was pretty drunk for dinner which made the food taste even better. I love their scampi and potatoes. Love it

Very great seafood. The sand dab was wonderful. The free bread was served warm and smothered in garlic flavored butter. The potato side was wonderful. Great service. Only complaint was that my table was in the middle and bar guests kept talking or moving over me or running into my chair. Also, it was a bit too dark inside.

Lovely place, cozy and had a vintage vibe, the servers were so nice and helpful and the food was delicious. Shout out to David one of the cooks for helping us at the parking lot and go out of his way to do so, we are very grateful.

This place is awesome! Old school Santa Monica. Great service, awesome drinks and the food was amazing! Went as part of a themed bar crawl but told the Hubby and can't wait to go back!

Parking is limited here as you know. So make sure of that. Ordered a mocktail at this place. It’s so good. It’s best to make a reservation here if you want to eat. Place can get busy and small.

Elegant, welcoming, and incredible food. Every dish we had was spectacular. The unique crusted steak was unreal! Make a res and eat here when you can.

I really enjoyed my time in the backyard patio with my girlfriends! There was really good live music and they were super accommodating to us when the place was sort of full. Friendly and helpful staff and I had an amazing plate of nachos. The nachos were supposed to have steak on them but they ran out and we subbed it for chicken and it was SO much better than the steak would have been. I would absolutely go back and get it again.

We had a delicious dinner at in the quaint, dark Chez Jay. We were thankful we had reservations for our family of 5. We were seated immediately even though the restaurant was very busy. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly and quick. You could sense the history in the walls. It was a fantastic recommendation from a local. Much better than the commercial, chain restaurants down the street.

I went here with a friend that lives nearby. I had seen this bar on the TV show Goliath. It has an incredible vibe. I’m paying this review a few months later so I forgot what I ate. I know Ill certainly go again. The service was outstanding and I believe the owner was very involved and spoke to us several times. This is a place that genuinely cares about the business and its guests.

This Santa Monica landmark first attracted my eye while watching Goliath at home in San Diego. On a 3-day trip to Los Angeles I decided to come by and check it out. I loved it! My friend and I hung out for a couple hours, had 3 drinks each, and ordered the honey glazed brussel sprouts with bacon and sautéed button mushrooms. The drinks have a heavy pour. The food is really good. Here’s a secret: dip the brussel sprouts in the mushroom sauce, it’s incredibly good! The space is dark and a bit divey, but their kitchen also pumps out some really tasty-looking steaks and sides, food fit for more “upscale” spots with “surface” and “curb” appeal. It’s absolutely a good time to hang out here after an evening walk along the Venice and Santa Monica waterfront.

Looking for the best way to drive across the country? Look up at one of three epic road trips from Chicago to Los Angeles! Feb 2021 Chez Jay was chosen as one of the best places to visit on a road trip by The Wall Streat Journal! 🥜🐘🇺🇸 This American restaurant, the historic landmark (from 2012) that was established in 1959 in Santa Monica on 1657 Ocean Ave. Its Owners did a good job on The Backyard (opened August 2019) where now we all can enjoy brunches on weekends and live music from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays. The New brunch menu is fantastic! Chez Jay is one of those special places where beside good drinks and amazing meals especially if you are into seafood and steaks you can get the best of its atmosphere, meet new interesting people and to make new friends. Great service and every person who works there is a good person. You will always feel people care about you and make sure you are happy at Chez Jay!

I had the best time at Chez Jay. It was worth making a reservation and we were seated right on time. It felt like home from the owners warm welcome to the amazing staff it began great and got even better. The bloody Mary was a perfect way to begin. The Calamari steak was just as tender and delicious as I heard. The butter steak was perfectly medium rare and the herb sauce will have you craving it the next morning. The scalloped potatoes made for an excellent side choice with a nice Al dente piece of fresh broccoli. The steak was so delicious I can't stop thinking about it. Good thing there was so much food and fun I brought some home. The parking lot is a nice treat in crazy busy Santa Monica. In a sea of watered down boring spots the food and history of Chez is a welcome classic.

amongst the detritus of touristy santa monica lurks this weird dive. food was solid classic red sauce/steak joint fare, but ultimately pretty delicious, in a way. beers and booth and energy were great. overall, a gem.

We went to Chez Jay, Santa Monica, 6th July 2023 3 adults on holiday from England. We absolutely loved it there. I wish we were in Santa Monica for longer, so we could go again. From the second we turned up the staff were so friendly and attentive and we had a good laugh. The atmosphere is great. Like a good old Anerican bar. They are so thoughtful and knowledgeable about the food. We all had steaks, which were amazing, great size and cooked well and tasted superb. The chef even came and checked on us. Thank you so much for making us so welcome. Great portions and pricing too.

I ordered the grilled salmon and it was juicy and fresh. It was delicious. The backyard sitting is more relaxing and quiet. The front is a little dark and more for drinking. We prefer sitting at the backyard. We chat and drink and enjoy the food there.
