When it was Maks it was awful. Since becoming Taste of Hong Kong two years ago this ha become our go to favorite for Chinese American food in Sarasota. It compares favorably with the typical NY neighborhood place. Standard Cantonese favorites are done nicely and there is a page on the menu of Hong Kong type specialties. The beef in xo sauce is especially good. Service can vary. Sometimes understaffed. Considering that this is one of only two good Chinese restaurants in the area. Stay away from the carryout places. My only complaint? The egg rolls are not the big fat ones that we see up north. Too much wrapper and not enough filler. Get the spring rolls insteadinstead!
Sit down restaurant with classic dishes. For us it was like the places we grew up with in New York.
Attentive service that wasn't speedy but not too slow.
Bottom line, nothing fancy but good food.
Slow service food ok. Our second visit and both times service was extremely slow. There was one waitress to cover a dozen occupied tables. It took a full 45 minutes from the time we arrived before we got our food. Our order was correct, that was not the case for some of the other tables. On the plus side, the food was good. I got the Sesame Chicken and pork fried rice. It was a very generous portion, so much that I took some home, something that rarely happens. Worth the wait? Probably not unless you have plenty of time and a hankering for some standard Chinese food.
In October, 2014 the restaurant was renamed from Mak's to Taste of Hong Kong
Karl K.. We eat at Mak's a couple of times per week. The food's always been great, the restaurant impeccably clean, and the staff is very courteous. The only long waits we have ever experienced is during tourist season on weekends. I lived a few years in Taiwan, and with the exception of a couple of Americanized dishes like chop suey, and chow mein, the food is quite authentically Chinese.
What I've been looking for!. Excellent, excellent food -- nothing fancy, surprisingly low price. My new lunch place. I've been looking for a great Chinese place, and I've found it!
Consistently good Chinese American food. While other restaurants may vary depending on the night or how busy they are. I have not received a bad meal from this place.
This time I ordered Mapo tofu. I find that’s a good test of a chefs ability. While every chef makes it differently, it is one of the standards by which I judge the restaurant.
We also ordered chicken chow fun. Although the menu states beef chow fun, they were more than happy to substitute.
Food was incredible!! The salt & pepper calamari (pictured) is amazing! Crispy, crunchy and perfectly tender calamari! All the dishes we have tried are great portions and full of flavor! Yummy veggies and great meat!
After a long trip was looking for something quick and this place hit the spot. The food was hit and egg roll crispy. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for some fast food Chinese food.
Possibly the best HK style restaurant in town. Yummy next best. Egg rolls the most authentic, not the typical cabbage roll that most places outside of Canada serves. Surprised to see salt fish on menu. I miss my mom’s recipe. My wife loves the fried rice. Today I ordered dragon meets Phoenix and it was a disappointment. Shrimp undercooked. But it’s only one of two places in town where I would bring company.
Very tasty food, clean and plenty of room for the entire family. 😋 If you want good Chinese food this is the place. Enjoy!
Visiting friends in Sarasota and was invited out for some Chinese food. Extensive menu offers a huge variety of choices. All the food at our table was better than average and the service adequate. Busy little restaurant has lots of noise.
I really really really enjoyed going to this establishment. The food was very hot and good. The waitress was there with a quick smile. The place was very clean. So was the bathrooms. The place was small but homie I plan on returning to this place and telling my friends ☺️
Small and nice place, simple and agreeable. The food was very enjoyable. We ordered the spring roles, the beef fried rice and the red curry with shrimps. Everything was delicious. If I may say something, maybe the shrimps were somewhat undercooked. We really enjoyed our lunch. Everything was fresh and tasty. We will go back.
Love Love Love the Shrimp Egg Foo Young! The only other dish we've tries is the Kung Pow Chicken and it was excellent as well.. :-)
Searching for good Chinese food in Sarasota and found it here. Traditional menu, with Thai dishes. Steamed dumplings were tasty, and the beef chow fun was made well.
So far I have had the Crab rangoon, their Pan Fried Dumplings, and soup. I'll tell you though- ive come to think that if they do the best Crab Rangoons ive had in Sarasota, then they are worth a shot for anything. I have a love for Rangoon and Dumplings- thats my jam. I found these Dumplings to be on the "poofy" side, but I still really enjoy them (2nd fave. Dumplings in Sarasota......very close 2nd). I have gone back to this cute, laid back, like a true hole in the wall place many times. If I can... I love to get there at least once every 1 to 2 weeks. So yummy, indeed! I'm almost scared to let my secret out!!!!
Food is always great!
Our favorite is the grouper with asparagus and mushrooms.
The owner is so nice and friendly... she knows us as we come in at least once a month. Highly recommend this place!
Small family restaurant. Everything is fine, just a not smiling waitresses. Tips are including to receipt.
Love this place.on a par with Yummy House. The food is Cantonese style and not heavenly spiced. efficient service ,reasonable prices, comfortable seating, located in Gulf Gate.
The type of place to eat every day without breaking the bank.
Awarded 2.7 Yums on a scale of 3
I had the Mongolian Beef and it was tasty. The staff was friendly and helpful. Their english was fine and it was easy and smooth to order to go over the telephone. It might deserve 5 stars, but I've only eaten there once, so it's too early to say. The to go wait time was reasonable, and the order was ready when I arrived. Overall I recommend this place and I would go back there again.
Buy far the best Chinese restaurant in the Suncoast. Finally found one I can go to.
Great service.
Get the tea.
This is comparable to Chicago and New York Chinese food.
A must go to
We had shrimp egg foo young and chicken/mixed vegetables. Both were very tasty. Wait to be seated and for meal were not long. Waitress was nice too!!😃
