We had appetizers and drinks here once before, and were excited to come back for a full meal. Overall, though our experience was enjoyable, for around $160 before adding the tip, we are less enthusiastic to come back again for another dinner.
We split two appetizers - the dumplings and what essentially was a massive “pancake” of different veggies and herbs. Both were very good. We also added an order of the pickles to take home as a snack - they were all well-made and crisp.
We split an entree - $35 for the roasted chicken and sausage with “fried rice” - that was good but felt very overpriced. The meat was a single chicken drumstick connected to a ball of spicy sausage stuffed into the connected skin from the chicken thigh (making it appear to be one big serving of chicken). Both chicken and sausage were tasty. The fried rice was served in square cakes that had decent flavor, but were literally squares of cooked rice that were then deep-fried until crunchy. They were so dry and hardened we had to coat them with the sautéed veggies to make them soft enough to be edible.
We had two drinks each - my wife had two alcoholic beverages and I had two of the NA cocktails made with seedlip. All four drinks were good, but added almost $70 (plus tax) to our tab.
Our server was attentive and helpful without being overbearing. The decor is warm, inviting, and has an almost home-like vibe.
For us, we’ll likely keep Fern Bar as a great spot to start a date night with a drink and app to share, then move on to get entrees elsewhere.
This place was highly recommended to us by someone who lives in Sebastopol. They offer brunch, lunch and dinner depending on the day of the week. We only glanced inside as we opted to eat outside, but the space inside looked awesome with lots of plants. The outdoor area is pleasant too. The food was great! It's obvious that they use high quality ingredients. They have an extensive cocktail and spirits list and the menu has good variety without being overwhelming. You should definitely try this place!
Delicious food. I come here for the cool atmosphere. It’s very classy and makes some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had.
Impromptu fine dining while out in Sebastepol and oh my does Fern Bar impress! Everything was put together with great care and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was great and the service matched. Perfect spot for a date or more upscale celebration.
Fern Bar - located in The Barlow area - is a fun place to come to for their cocktails and lively atmosphere! Their meals are more tapas styled based dishes and the ones we had were delicious.
Food: We tried the halibut, the aged fries, the fried chicken, and the fried ravioli. It was all delicious. The aioli sauce that comes with the fries is tasty. The halibut was cooked perfectly with a green curry sauce that had a kick of spiciness to it. The fried ravioli was excellent!
Atmosphere: The restaurant was decorated with lots of green plants which gave it an earthy feel. It was lively inside. Our waitress was nice and attentive as well.
Price: The cocktails were $15 a piece which seems to be the normal price everywhere you go these days. I do like that they at least make them strong and unique which makes you feel like what you’re getting is worth the price.
Parking: Parking is available in a small lot next to the restaurant and on the street as well. It can be tricky to find a spot as it is a busy area.
My favorite restaurant in Sebastopol. The best plate is the green curry trout. All the drinks are good, especially the Kyoto Sour :)
Update 2023: this place is truly amazing. We flew to Santa Rosa with a 4 month old to come to this restaurant, and it was as good as we remembered!
The fried chicken is AMAZING! The burger was also fantastic. Highly recommend this restaurant.
We’ve visited twice and both times were some of the best dinner & cocktails we’ve ever had. Very unique flavors and combinations for both drink and food. The cocktails are balanced, I would definitely recommend ordering some of their house cocktail creations - they’ve come up with some really great recipes. The food is very rich, and we’ve never been able to finish everything. Great portions and just sooooo good. And finally, the aesthetic: This place is simply gorgeous and so is the food & drink presentation. Recommended 10/10, will definitely continue to return whenever we’re in the area.
Very pleasant happy evening at the Fern Bar.
The "Fern Beer" IPA was good. The "Night Walker" cocktail was an absolutely delicious after dinner drink. My "Smash Burger" was delicious. My wife's "Umami Bomb" was phenomenally good, great flavor, terrific texture.
Presentation of the drinks was excellent.
The service was friendly and expeditious.
This place has it all. Eclectic interior design, cool location, variety of interesting and delicious menu items, and high prices. Service was just right with its level of attentiveness. The baked eggs were very good. The smash burger was also very good but for the $30 price point I think there are better menu options. Unfortunately, the burger came with the most uninspiring and lack luster side of fries that looked like they came from the frozen food aisle at the local Walmart.
I had the fried chicken sandwich. Twas delicious! The aioli and the spicy dip was very flavorful. I also enjoyed a beverage named Euphoria. Also delicious. Service was great. Atmosphere is intriguingly beautiful. Lots of owls, ferns, a fun and unique layout. I highly recommend! 💜
The place is tucked away in the Barlow complex and sort of difficult to navigate to. Their array of cocktails are plentiful. More Shrub offerings than Wildseed. The menu changed upon our arrival. The choices were tasty but left us feeling a heavy (fries and chips were oily, heavy-handed application of sauces and salad dressing). Outdoor ambience 3.5. Food =3.5. Drinks =4, Value for money =3.5
Was looking forward to visiting the Fern Bar. Was my first time in town where the bar is located and was fortunate to be there on a Wednesday evening in summer when the town is alive with people and great music. Was lucky to get a table the Fern. The service was impeccable. The menu is a piece of art, impressively creative both the food and cocktails. It took a hot second to make our decisions. I think I was the unfortunate one in selected the phony Negroni and pork chop. The first drink was made incredibly poorly but the staff stepped up and replaced it with what was expected. I was looking forward to my main meal but have to admit it did not live up to the hype, it looked fantastic but was verging on bland when it came to taste. Have to admit we shared each other dishes and I was blown away by the variety of taste. Just not my night. Would absolutely go again however

👀 Our guide took us to The Barlow which is a 12-acre Bay Area outdoor market district featuring local food, wine, beer, spirits and crafts made onsite. They craft garden-to-glass cocktails served alongside modern American cuisine inspired by West Sonoma County's abundance of biodiversity.
The owners of Fern Bar already own a successful Sebastopol restaurant Handline when they had an idea to open up a cocktail bar, a concept missing in Sebastopol at the time.
The menu is great for speciality dietary requirements, Vegan, Veg, Celiac etc. Lots of healthy options and things to share.
💥 A plant lovers paradise, The Fern is a airy, plant-filled space.
🍸 The bar features house-made beer and spirit-free elixirs, as well as locally-sourced and small-production wines.
🍴 Buffalo Veggies house hot sauce, blue cheese yogurt $12 G I love this concept, I don’t love buffalo sauce though but this wasn’t strong.
Chive Pancake roasted brassica dip black garlic vinegar $10 V a very healthy dish, pretty good!
Umami Bomb mushrooms, shiitake 'cream', broccoli, sticky rice, balsamic, nutritional yeast $18 V, G I loved this, the mix of veggies and flavours worked well
✨ Great for plant lovers, those with dietary requirements or health nuts.

Top notch cocktails and good.
Vegetarian options and dry drinks were very impressive.
Beautiful ambience and great location.
At Fern bar, the menu looks delicious and their drinks looked pretty. The restaurant was very nicely decorated, and is the type that people would want their home to look like. Plant’s everywhere. Also, the drinks are prettier than I am.
The food was also delicious, full of flavor and beautiful to look at.
Really yummy spot with great dishes to share. We had the salad and the avocado dish. DELICIOUS, lots of flavor! Also had the trout- the green sauce and mushrooms went amazing together. Also tried the carrot, ginger, tumeric shrub- highly recommend and pretty too
Inventive, refreshing, and visually appealing cocktails. All the sauces felt like “secret sauces” in some way—be it the hot sauce crema that gave the fried chicken a mellow kick, or the mushroom ketchup that “umamified” the aged fries. Good mastery of mixing different flavors and umami. Feel-good vibes with upbeat music, industrial design, and fern-forward greenery. Overall a gem in the Sonoma Valley.
