Summary: Service great, some of the dishes were fantastic.
Pros:
- Calamari (not pictured) was awesome with a lovely spice to it, 5/5.
- Creamy seafood linguine had a little too much thyme for my liking but a solid 4/5.
- Crab cakes were great, fresh and crispy 5/5.
- Halibut fish and chips were solid, the fries have a lovely battered crisp to it, and the coleslaw was surprisingly well balanced 4.5/5.
- Seafood chowder (not pictured) looks gross but tastes great 4.5/5.
- Cool decor and great view of the small boat harbor.
- Above average service with a friendly waitress and fairly swift fulfillment of food orders.
Cons:
- pricey (but that is Seward)
Overall: I withheld 5 stars as I think that should be reserved for places that really blow you away with the combination of food, service, and value. This is a fantastic restaurant and I would definitely come again, but I wouldn't say this is a one-of-a-kind place.
We had a great experience. Service was excellent! Best calamari ever! Bread was fantastic. Seafood pasta was good. Crab legs were good, but not a lot for the price... there also wasn't a crab season this year... so they were good for last year's crabs. Best bread pudding dessert I've ever had!
They were busy at dinner but service was quick and accommodating. My halibut was perfect and my son absolutely loved his steak, broccolini and potatoes. The hot fudge sundae was delicious as well! Definitely will be back!
Update- came back Sunday around noon 5/22/22 kind of busy but service was good and quick. Probably the best salmon tacos I've had in a very, very long time. Fresh & a little spicy.
The wait time of an hour proved to be the best decision we made! We were seated at a beautiful window seat. While sipping on blueberry mojitos, we gazed out at the scenery. Next, we feasted on oysters and fisherman’s stew. Following our delectable dinner, we ate a fabulous berry compote! May I say, “My compliments to the chef.” Best food in Alaska!
While in town for work, I ate three times at Rays. Twice for dinner and once for lunch. As you can imagine it was great since I was here not twice but three times.
For dinner the first night I had the Halibut Andaman as an entree with the seafood chowder and calamari as a starter. The chowder bowl was huge and delicious, a very solid 9/10. One thing I always find funny on a seafood chowder vs clam or salmon, is the seafood can be quite nebulous since you don’t know exactly what it is you’re eating; either way it was great and would definitely get again. The calamari was out of this world and I can say easily, the best I’ve had and I’ve had a lot of calamari from many great places in my life. The main dish, the halibut, might be the best seafood entree I’ve ever had; I’m hesitant to label things that way since it’s hard to be certain on the best if you don’t have them lined up but no doubt this dish is and will always be in the conversation. The halibut was served with a crispy baked breading and smothered in a delicious curry sauce and sided with broccolini. My wife had the seafood linguine which was also very good.
The next day we stopped in for lunch. We once again had the calamari and I had the salmon tacos for an entree. Again, the best fish tacos I’ve ever had and it’s not even close. I was in San Diego for Cinco De Mayo a couple weeks back for work and had no shortage of delicious seafood tacos but none of them came close to this. The salmon was blackened with a pesto aioli that was unbelievable. My wife had a fried shrimp lunch which was amazing. The breading was clearly in house and just delicious.
The last meal we had I ordered the clams as an appetizer since we’d twice had the calamari. I wasn’t a big fan of the clams to be honest but it was okay. I had the glazed salmon for dinner which again was good but didn’t live up to either of the experiences I’d had prior.
All in all this place is a home run for me. Very seldom do you go somewhere that has the view and food to match, usually it’s a trade off. This place had views to die for with the food to match.
Jim, if you’re reading this - I think it’s strange that you read my reviews :P
Absolutely brilliant, hands down the best seafood in Seward!! Great food and excellent service, totally worth the long wait to get in during dinner hours. We had the crab cakes and the Halibut Andaman - one of the best crab cakes we’ve had and the Halibut Andaman was out of this world!
Ate at Ray’s tonight for dinner. Absolutely fantastic meal! We ordered the clams and half pound of king crab for apps and loved them both! The entire table ordered halibut for dinner. The blackened halibut (gluten free) was the best I’ve ever eaten. The remainder of the table loved the macadamia nut crusted halibut with an incredible curry sauce. We will for sure visit again. Oh and the views were breathtaking! We got there right before dinner seating at 4 and did not have a wait.
