Review Casa Maya Restaurant - St. Augustine

Ashleigh Perkins
Had lunch here. I really enjoyed all the different flavors of the food. Our waiter Daniel was a real Gem. Love that there wasn't a wait when we showed up and we're seated right away. I look forward to my next trip to St. Augustine; Casa Maya will be on my list to visit again.

This is a really great restaurant. It was a nice atmosphere with great music playing. I order the Tacos Al Pastor and they were delicious. I was going to order more but time wasn't on my side. The staff there are really nice and friendly. They came immediately when we needed something and constantly asked us if we were okay. They had some good drinks that you could order too. I'm definitely coming back here when I'm in St. Augustin.

Fun spot, great atmosphere. (Only sat outside) live music was good and the food was great. Absolutely amaizing fresh guac. Plantains we're cooked perfectly.

This Amazing gem has flare, delicious food, live entertainment, trendy bar area to drink while your table is made ready. We were seated by Larry, the general manager, who made us feel right at home. Spacious parking lot right next door! Food is authentic and delicious.

My mind was blown and some other parts, by our bartender Xavier, he was very welcoming, knowledgeable, kept us entertained, and humoured. The cocktails that he crafts are absolutely amazing! The food here is also top notch, the people in the kitchen work with great ingredients and know what they are doing with them. I highly recommend this place!

Oysters were large and from from Maine. The guacamole was tasty but Kirstyn made the visit with her excellent service! We came back from the jalapeno margarita and were not disappointed.

We dined at Casa Maya on February 21st for lunch. We were immediately seated in the upstairs balcony which has a wonderful view of the street activity below. Service was quick and attentive. We had the corn tortillas and salsa to start followed by Cohinitia Pibil. There are add on’s available for an additional cost. We also had the Ceviche. Both were delicious. I look forward to returning to St. Augustine and dining at Casa Maya again.

We came to Casa Maya for drinks. Really enjoyed the vibe of this place, especially the outdoor seating. Great place to chill and catch up with old friend. I ordered hibiscus flowerita and I forgot what my friend ordered. We both really liked our drinks. The service was good. Definitely will come back again next time and try out the food.

We drive all the way from Jacksonville for this Mexican food. It is the best in all of North Florida. The Ceviche is something else, we love to throw a dollop of the guacamole in it. Get the veggie burrito and add meat it’s to die for.

Fabulous, Authentic Mexican cuisine at its finest! A very classy twist on Sangria you can’t go wrong with white or red recipe. Staff was polite and courteous owner came out to meet my family. If your looking for water downed Tex mex or surfer food you may want to dine elsewhere... The shrimp ceviche was killer and the peel & eat shrimp with custom blended Mexican spices are a must! Honestly it is a welcomed Gem for any foodies who know great Mexican old school cuisine. The Sopa de Mayan was some of the best soup we’ve ever had. We will be repeat customers as local Ponte Vedra Beach residents!

Had terrible service here. Yes we had a large group but it's not that hard to write down what each person had. some mix up is even ok, but auctioning food, having me cut into a burrito and see if it was steak or chicken and then giving it to someone else, really? When the checks came out I asked the waiter for mine and he literally told me it was at the other end of the table and I could go and get it. Really? The service was sooooo bad. I think when you automatically add a tip in it makes the waiter not care. At least that is what this felt like. :-(

We had dinner there yesterday evening. I ordered the lamb and it was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend that dish and this restaurant. Sat on the outside deck and the ambiance was great!

Stopped in for the first time for brunch and the food was amazing! Sat outside and had great service. The oyster shooter is a must try!!! Great place to eat for a girls day out or family lunch!
Diana Hoffman-Bailey
No flavor guacamole after told they had the best. White sangria bitter, fruit not mottled into wine. Atmosphere ok.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a delightful lunch at Casa Maya. The food was fresh and delicious with ample choices. The bar was also very plentiful with cocktail options. We found the staff to be friendly and prompt with their service. Definitely our new favorite place in town. A nice little gem in the heart of the city.

My girlfriend had shrimp tacos I had the mahi-mahi tacos !! It was awesome! Place was clean and in order , the waiter was on point with all of the menu and how it would be served! We enjoyed it very much! Would tell all must try !!

Amazing atmosphere, service, and delicious food! Enjoyed amazing cocktails before dinner on the patio and the wait flew by!

This was an awesome place, great food ,great atmosphere. We will definitely go back

Excellent food and service. I highly recommend the mahi tacos.
Lisa Willow Dunne
Great vegetarian menu. Delicious fresh food and staff was excellent.
Patty Gamez
The food was cooked to perfection. I had the green burrito and it had jist the right amount of rice, beans, and veggies and not too much cheese. The service was outstanding for a holiday and we were seated right away. We live in Titusville and would definitely go back

This was our second time here....The first time was awesome so we brought my in-laws with us and the second time was just as fabulous as the first! Austin who was our waiter was great! Casa Maya is now one of our favorite places.....
Stephen W. Ramsden
I would like to review this place but after being seated we sat there for several minutes while about 7 different employees walked by without even looking our way. It was empty and we were the only people on the floor but simply could not any service....so we left. $15-$30 lunch entrees? I expect better...
Marilu Dempsey
Loved it! Awesome vegan burrito, fresh veggies, black beans, avocado and salsa plus a small container of venegrette because I didn't get cheese. Shows that the chef cares that you love his food.
Teresa Hancock
Service was great! Great atmosphere but fajitas were surprisingly bland. Fish entree was good. Rather pricey for what we got. Menu was great and had a lot of choices.
Cindy Ross
Scott, Liam & I had late brunch here today; it was very tasy! I had the Hangover Skillet with over-easy eggs, potatoes, peppers, onions and chorizo. Scott had Huevos Rancheros and Liam had Chips and Salsa. The salsa was super good!

I've eaten here twice. Both times the food was delicious. First time I had the carnitas, the second time the shrimp tacos and black beans and rice. Everything was so good. My friends all loved their dishes, too. A friend got the green burrito which I tasted. Wow.

I didn't give it a 5 because the first time the service was awful. The server was sloooooow and she tried to tell us that the happy hour prices didn't apply to our drinks. We had to go to the bar to get it straightened out. She also knew nothing about the menu. The second time the service was excellent. So maybe the first was a fluke.

The ambiance is great. We sat outside the first time and upstairs the second. A very relaxing vibe.

A-flipping-Mazing. We sat at bar on patio, drinks were amazing, oysters were perfect, we're coming back for breakfast. I recommend cucumber jalapeño, it's a best seller for a reason people.
Brett Tobias
Food was expensive and so were the drinks. Neither were very good. The bartender spent most of his time ignoring us, which is probably for the better, because he was rude when he actually had to talk to people.
In short, there are too many great places to eat and drink in St. Augustine to waist your time here. You should go somewhere else.
Louise Walton
This should not be even considered as a place to eat, I could write about what was good but this space would be blank. Let's start from the beginning the service was exceptionally slow, the waiter was arrogant and didn't write down our order, he was sure he didn't need to, then he kept forgetting things like actually waiting on us and items from our order. My husband ordered the grouper which was bland, overcooked and just below average to say the least. My daughter and I ordered the paella.... DONT MAKE THIS MISTAKE it was like soup, so much liquid, the chorizo was dry, scallops overcooked, clams and mussels were not bad. However this was overall not why I am writing this review it was the way we were treated when we explained that this was not acceptable to us. My husband did not eat his grouper as myself and my daughters food was well below par, so we were laughed at by the terribly rude and immature wait staff and then we were threatened and bullied into paying for food we did not eat or even think was worth paying for, we will not be going here again. And my advice eat somewhere else , eat a sandwich, eat anywhere but here.
Kchristiansen92
Expensive for things you could make at home.... We went here excited to try the food based on the great ratings this restaurant has online, but we're extremely disappointed. They were out of things on the menu, and the service seemed very untrained. We received a wrong order, too. $13 for 3 very small tacos with no sides, and an $8 drink that tasted like water and tequila. It was a very disappointing lunch for a trip we were excited to take.

Lunch with the family. On Sunday May 24 2015 my family and I went to Casa May for lunch. We had the worst service ever and then because we were a larger party a gratuity was automatically applied. The wait for our drinks and food was much too long. Our waitress asked if we wanted any more drinks then20-30 minutes later did not bring them stating that she did not know we wanted drinks and that last call had gone out at 4:30 PM. I understand to a point when a place is busy . However the restaurant did not seem that busy at the time and people that came after us were served and done before we were. I was very disappointed in the service. Our bill was large and it was not worth it to us due to the wait. We even had a hard time just getting water. Perhaps the waitress was new?
Sam Jones
Had to be the rudest wait staff! Once we finally were seated in the half empty restaurant, we waited for at least 10-15 minutes for anyone to come over to the table. We decided to cut our losses and leave.
Laura
I got the vegetarian burrito. It was filled with veggies, wrapped in a green tortilla, and covered with salsa. The guacamole was so tasty! The black bean soup was good as well.
David Raymond
Great spot for lunch with great outdoor seating. Carnita tacos were outstanding.
The highlight for me was the top shelf margarita- no sour mix.... Just fresh lime, oj and agave served in a mason jar. Perfect

Need service training. This is a great restaurant with delicious food and drink menu. We have repeatedly had bad service the last 3 times we've dined there. I hope management fixes their floor staff's neglectful and inattentive service issues. It's imperative for the success of your reputation because word is spreading that you have poor customer service and its a deterrent to dining at this restaurant.

1st time great... 2nd time not!. I had been to casa maya before and had a wonderful experience, and great food.
Year later, they must be under different management. We were seated right away shockingly on a very busy night in town. It was clear once we sat down 2 separate tables were not happy with the service. We were sat outside where there are heaters... But we soon found out they had no propane for any of them. An hour wait later with only drinks from the bar (brought by the bus boy, not our waiter) and no water, we realized the heater across the patio was on heating no one. We asked to move to that table, had 5 minutes of heat... That heater went out. Clearly the place was very short staffed and the management is not what it needs to be. When your staff members talk poorly about the management to the customers... It's a bad situation. Food was good but I probably won't be going back unless things shape up.
Reneemjohn89
Terrible Service. We came in for an afternoon lunch, and was immediately brushed off by the maître d'. Then when he did seat us, we were not attended to or introduced to our server for at least 7min. Our drinks took another 5+ minutes to show up and to this day I have still not seen our food. I wish I could at least say the food was worth the wait, but I'll never know.

Best Mexican food outside of Mexico and healthy too. If you are looking for a new Mexican food experience then casa maya is the best choice for you. The food is done is delicious and made healthy and fresh! The staff is friendly the restrooms are clean. I simply give this place 5 stars
Food Lover
Had dinner with my friends and everything was AMAZING!! The food was delicious, great service and the Margaritas. Everything is fresh and with great flavor. I recommend this place if you are looking for delicious and authentic Mexican food.

Bad all around. We went their last night for a family dinner and had reservations. We were seated at 7:30 and did not get utensils or water. When we asked for water, it was served in plastic cups whereby the neighboring tables had glass cups. We then received our appetizer without utensils (had to ask again) and the server took our order supposedly at 8:17 . All the other patrons around our table who were seated later had already received their meal. I asked several times about our meal and was told the flank steak took longer although he never mentioned this to our party. I went to the ladies room and again asked for our meal finally served at 9:10 and cold. After a few bites I asked the manager to take my meal away and deduct if from my bill-it was 28.95 meal! We were very disappointed in our experience and will not return!

Nothing special with high prices, terrible service, avoid. This place was rated high, and it shouldn't have been. No acknowledgement on arrival and we had to ask if they were seating still, before they decided to seat us with out reservation. Turned out it was half empty anyway. Plastic cups, no refill on water: just a pitcher left on the table after the server got lazy refilling one drink. The server stated food was coming in 5 minutes after waiting a half hour, but it showed up 45 minutes after that even. The manager attempted to apologize and threw a freebee of 4 alcoholic drinks for the table of 7 to share after we complained. What a slap in the face. Then then included 20% tip on top of it and didn't deserve it. The food tasted okay, but wasn't special. There are so many other places to choose from, pick any other place.

Delicious food and fun atmosphere. Definitely a St. Augustine favorite. Cozy tiny restaurant with GREAT food.

What a great experience... we loved the food and service!! My table ordered the fish, the steak, and I ordered the Carnitas. OMG... delicious!! Very tasty, a definite 5 star restaurant!
Emily
Fantastic flavors. Mango on fish was fantastic. Not very many options for kids
Rc
We had the cochinita pibil platter and queso fundido and sangria! We are delighted, the queso is amazing! We shared the main dish and the Mayan spiced pork was juicy and tender! Maribel was a quick waitress and our glasses remained full!! We Will come back... yes the place is clean!
Mary
Great food and service. Highly recommend the freshly made guacamole appetizer, chicken quesadilla and flan. Will definitely return.

Impressed!. Delectable food and excellent service! Be sure to stop by and at least try their Mayan soup!

Worst service ever. Not only they took more than an hour to service the food, but it was wrong and cold, knowing that we had kids , worse service ever.

Serendipity. Just walking down the street and Victor came out from the court yard to speak to us. He convinced us to give authentic (old school) Mexican food a try. The staff is genuine and really cares about your experience. The food...very very good, a good value. We ate in the court yard, but the restored interior rooms were beautiful.
The sangria'? It looked beautiful and tasted great; fresh and not too sweet. Unfortunately, it lacked alcohol in it and was a bit pricey. We didn't mind because at no point were we treated like tourist, which we are very sensitive too. We live in St. Augustine and would definitely bring the whole family back.

Great Food/Friendly Service. Very friendly staff. The manager was great! We had to change our reservation from 6 pm to 5. No problem. The food was wonderful. Well seasoned. The restaurant was once a home, which has been renovated. The gardens and interiors are beautiful! Relaxing, enjoyable, last night celebration!

Amazing food and great atmosphere. Very friendly staff, the food is excellent, we ordered the chicken Quesadilla, mushroom and maya soup and steak taco and it was all very yummy A+. Just a warning the hot sauce is HHOOOTT!!!

Overrated. Food was good, but way overpriced, and not what we were expecting. I will say that the atmosphere was nice, beautiful courtyard. It cost a fortune and I wouldn't go there again.
Mandy Lancaster
Absolutely fabulous!! We eat here each time we come to St. Augustine. It gets better each time. We loved the Mayan soup, Aztec pork, Xaman-Ha Mahi, cafe con leche, tres leche and pecan pie. The service is great and the staff is so personable. We highly recommend restaurant as part of your St. Auggie experience.

One of the best. I have traveled around the world 8 times now and can say that this is truly one of the best in the world. The food here is incredible. For anyone that complained about the amount of time to prepare a work of art....please just go to Taco- Bell and let the true aficionados enjoy this gem !!!!

What a pleasant surprise! My wife and I were floored with the quality of the food at Casa Maya. We couldn't get a seat at out favorite French restaurant in town and started up the street. We had passed by this restaurant before figuring it to be another 'bad' mexican restaurant. But two couples out front waiting for a seat convinced us to give it a try. Wow! What a great tip. I had the hangar steak with kind of a green chili sauce. Grilled to perfection which is actually hard to do because of the thinness of a hangar steak. My wife had a chicken dish she raved about it. Salads were fresh and vibrant. The guacamole was as good as my New Mexican grandmother's. I was pleasingly shocked! There are only several restaurants we go to in Saint Augustine and this is now on our 'must' list. Service was a bit slow, I admit, but the owner made his rounds and attended to our request immediately. It is a college town after all and I've noticed a low retention rate at many restaurants in Saint Augustine... it goes with the territory I suppose.

Comments. Wonderful opportunity to dine at Casa Maya on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014. We were warned ahead of time by the staff that the wait would be long, the three of us decided to wait because of all the good recommendations, and we all were happy that we waited, because the food was outstanding, service great, and we would all return to have another fabulous meal. Thank you Casa Maya!!!

Bad service or bad night?. Okay, here is the caveat before the review: Restaurant claimed to have a shortage of clean plates due to an unexpected accident that caused many of their plates to break. We dined here on Dec 28th when the crowds were at their peak. Service staff were mostly friendly, but deficient. Host, servers and staff made no secret that they were stressed and tired, which is not very professional in the restaurant and hospitality industry. Soup arrived at the table pretty cold; so cold, it had to be reheated; water and silverware had to be requested from server twice. No napkins were offered until requested. Half of the food ordered, including all appetizers, were served on real thin paper plates, the ones you buy at your local gas station convenience store, not the more robust Chinet type paper plates. Server apologized and explained the issue with the broken plates. Food was hit and miss. For a group of five, half the dishes were pretty tasty and hot, the other ones were unremarkable. Based on the circumstances, it's hard for me to decide if this restaurant is really bad or if they just had a real bad night. Either way, the staff needs to be trained to perform better, even in chaotic circumstances.

Restaurants like this are the reason people are addicted to food!!! LOL! If you want a perfect lunch out or dinner this is the place to go. I have been a customer since they first opend at the original location. Every single local and visitor I have suggested done here ALWAYS RAVE about their experience and become fans. The atmosphere is unforgettable, the food... There just really are no words for the sincerity and love that you can taste in every single thing that is served. You feel like family here. Literally ever thing on the menu is prepared to perfection. Vegan? Vegetarian? Carnivore? They will have you amazed from appetizer, soup, salad, entree, and dessert. It had been over a year since I had been to Casa Maya..Tonight was astounding. It was my first time at the new location... It could not have been a more gorgeous way to spend the evening. Guacamole, Mayan Soup, Yucatan Salad, Carnitas, Avocado Creme Brûlée, organic coffee, and Flan (to go). Don't judge me, it had been over a year of disappointing meals!!!!! Lol!! Enjoy! I know you will!!

Really poor service. When my family of four (2 adults, and 2 college students home on break) came into this restaurant, it had been highly recommended to us. We first checked the menu posted outside, as I am a strict vegan. After waiting to be seated, we discovered that the majority of the vegetarian items on the menu were "lunch" only items. So when I ordered, I had only one choice. Then we proceeded to wait for more than an hour for our food. The server informed us after about 30 minutes that our order would be out soon, and we continued to wait....when yet another table that ordered after we did was served, I went downstairs to find a manager, which of course I did not find. Our food she arrived, with very little apology, and no flatware......The waitress knew I was livid and chose to just stay away. The manager never appeared as I had requested. When we asked for the check the waitress said she was told dessert was on the house. (Since I did not have the patience to wait again, we declined). Really disappointed that the manager never bothered to apologize, and really disappointed that the server really didn't seem to care either. Or maybe it was that the server never bothered to tell the manager. Either way - this was a huge customer service failure, we eat out often, but it it unlikely that I will be going here again.

Quaint relaxing atmosphere, friendly service, unique menu, fabulous fresh food. I am a vegetarian and had many many great options to choose from (that wasn't just salad).
Rebecca Teeters
We sat upstairs on the balcony and enjoyed the cool breeze, lovely music from across the street, and the delicious food and wine. The Au Mun Grouper was delicious, as well as the Bacalar Salad and Mayan soup. Friendly and alert staff. We will definitely come back again!
Debbie Keneipp
My husband and I recently stumbled upon Casa Maya on a recent trip to St. Augustine. I did an Urbanspoon search and since the restaurant had a good rating we figured we would try it. What a wonderful place. We started with a drink and some conversation at the downstairs bar with the owner's son who was so delightful. The service and food was amazing. We had a fantastic dinner and drinks.

We would definitely go again!

Decent guac but awesome salsa. Everyone hypes the guac but I thought the salsa was so much tastier. Thick with a lot of flavor just excellent. Guac was okay just not as good as everyone made it out to be. My wife was a bit disappointed in her fish tacos a bit cold she said but I liked my dish of a shrimp quesadilia.

The upstairs space was very nice and spacious also nice place in downtown.
Janderwee
Atypical Mexican. In general we liked the food here, though it's not your typical Mexican fare....... Nopales salad anyone? My carne was very good, and it's hard to find a decent carne. The main drawback to this place - the salsa. I swear we were eating plain tomato sauce from a can! If they can fix that problem, this would be a great place.
We liked dining on the balcony - great people-watching on the street below.
Justine Cyr
Overall the setting and food were very good. The only part I didn't like was the chips and salsa....not good enough for a restaurant serving spanish food. And service was mesiocre. But my boyfriend's mahi mahi was great and my pulled pork was delicious.
LKA
EXCELLENT!! If you are considering Casa Maya or Acapulco, its not even comparable. The guacamole and salsa is absolutely incredible, as well as the Carnita entree. Service was a little slow, bit it was good service. Thanks Casa Maya, we will be back soon.
Sojourn
Pretty good food. Everything is prepared well, but most things on the menu blend together with no distinctive characteristics. Oh, and I caught then pouring their famous "house made" salsa from a store brand bottle into the carafe. Never the less, it's worth stopping by once.
Disgruntled Guest
One of the worst experiences. Absolutely one of the worst experiences in history of eating. Came in with a party of five. From the start, the service was poor. Walked in, no employee to be seen to seat or greet us. When one did show up, another followed with her drink, that she stirred while awkwardly telling us there was a party inside and there was one table and outdoor seating.

While being walked confusingly by two staff members, the bar tables scattered with laptops, paperwork etc. Office in the dining room is a little confusing.

After an extended wait on drinks/appetizers, we ordered something relative of a fondue disaster. The cheese was half-melted, thick, and greasy. It had obviously been microwaved. It was served with a few raw tortillas and a thin salsa. Together, it tasted like spaghetti-o's in a flour tortilla. Gross.

I ordered the Pakal Shrimp as did another guest I was with. The shrimp were chewy, grossly over cooked with the tail on. So in addition to having to eat chewy shrimp, i had to saw through the tails to remove them. The portions were relative to the price. Aside from the overwhelming flavor of bottled barbecue sauce, undercooked rice. The plate resembled something between a soup, an etouffee, and a paella.

I promptly returned the plate as I found it unedible. I asked for whatever was quickest as everyone else was attempting to eat what they had ordered (I tried everything, nothing was good). They brought me out a tasteless pulled pork with a watery ramekin of black beans and a spoonful of bland rice. I had to ask for tortillas.

Aside from the food, it was clean and well kept up with, but it was poorly lit where we were sat, and during dinner there was the constant sound of a dumpster/trash compactor going the entire time. I would of much rather of listened to the dining room inside then a dumpster.

While we sat, we watched the dishwasher carry dirty dishes (pans, plates, everything) through the outdoor seating area. If this wasn't enough. All the members of the kitchen staff were out on the back patio smoking cigarettes while we were eating.

When we received the check, they had still charged us for the 20 dollar shrimp dish that I sent back, instead of charging me for what I actually ate which, all in all, wasnt worth paying for. 140$ for dinner for five, I would rather have gone for fast food than go there.

The server, was polite, but was completely out of his element with dealing with my complaint. Service was slow for us being the only visible table other than the "party" upstairs.

Will not go back. Would not recommend.
Maria
Delicious food, fantastic service. We had a great lunch, the owner Marco was very thoughtful and attentive. Would definitely come back!
Deano
We ate a delightful lunch here and were seated on the second floor balcony! The food was quite tasty, the salsa and guacamole impossibly fresh! I would drive an hour out of my way for a repeat of the ambiance , food and service we got here. Hats off to the owners and great staff.

Best Breakfast in Town. When ever we visit St Augustine, we have to stop here at least once for breakfast. Their chilaquiles are amazing!!!
Peggy
Absolutely delicious! You should get the queso fundido. If they ask you if you want to try the habanero hot sauce, say yes! It was awesome. I had the veggie burrito, and the husband had the Aztec pork. Everything was great. One of our favorite places in St. Augustine.
Wallacer
Great organic fusion lunch. Yes, hummus is an option for the Mayan wrap. Light, fresh ingredients, pleasant atmosphere, delicious. Just to be clear, for those who are unhappy with Casa Maya's lack of "authentic" Southwest Influenced "Mexican" cuisine: authentic Mexican food in Florida is at its best in a taco truck. The rest of us will enjoy the avocado creme brûlée.
Rafael
If u r searching for a flavorful authentic Mexican restaurant, or something with a southwest twist don't come here. Their chips are from a bag and the salsa tastes like a can of unseasoned tomatoe sauce.... Everything sounded good but was just average and cold once it arrived. Waiters didn't know menu (when asked bottled water brand, "it's from Walmart or Cosco" we were told), too bad because location and place itself is nice.
Neal_barnes
Not for vegans!. Last week, I ordered their vegetable burrito with very specific instructions to omit the cheese because I am a vegan. It arrived and appeared to be as ordered until I had eaten about a third of it. I then noticed strands of cheese on my fork and discovered that they hadn't done as I had requested - the remaining two-thirds was filled with cheese. The waitress apologized and assured me that she had requested it without cheese. They did replace it with another, but I wasn't impressed with their inability to serve food as requested. No offer to compensate me for the inconvenience was made.
Trinette101
Tikin Xic fish was amazing and the roasted chicken with green sauce just as flavorful. Friendly staff was amazing. Excellent find!

Found this place last night while searching restaurants on urban spoon....Awesome! Good food, great service...ask for outside seating for the ambiance!

Casa Maya is a must stop when in St. Augustine. Dined there this evening & dinner was above excellent! I went for the special suggested by our waiter..shrimp, sauce, & veg were superb...I wanted to lick the plate clean! My wife tried the Cochinita Pibil..tender junks of marinated pork w plantains..YUM! Try the Molletes with chorizo..this was a starter that could pass for an entree. The Mayan soup is outstanding as well. Great food and excellent wait staff. We'll be back!
Kelly
Mmmmm!. Amazing food, wow.. This is easily my favorite restaurant in St. Augustine. We got grouper tacos and a Pepito steak sanwhich and a basket of chips and guacamole. Everything is so amazing! I cannot wait to go again next time I am in town.
Danneskjold
SUPER GOOD!!!. Great mexican food! TOP notch! great options for vegetarians! GO HERE best meal in St. Augustine

Management does not get it,. Until they get it together, I would spend my dining dollar elsewere. Food is fair, wait staff is trying, management lacks prfessionalism. Tonight we ventured there for dinner and customers were getting locked in the restroom. One person in our party was locked in for 15 min. Others dinners were experiencing restroom lock issues.

now here's the issue...once the manager got her out...he did nothing. There was no comp, no free dessert, no nothing until I approached him as i walked out the door ...saying we would not come back, he gave her his business card for a free entree !

Poor dinning experience due to " asleep at the wheel ' management

Best guacamole on the face of the earth and the tortilla soup is possibly the best soup ever created. Ever.

Seriously, ever.

Best fish tacos I've ever had!!! Organic everything which I love as well!!

Loved it. My boyfriend and i were at st. Augustine for the weekend and we had breakfast at casa maya on sunday morning and the food was delicious, the service was great, and the prices also. We loved the place and we plan to go back there for dinner the next time were up there. Thank you very much
Vicki
Amazing food. Wait staff took great care of us. There is a house Pinot if u like that to try its wonderful.

I went to lunch and had an amazing experience. Im gluten intolerant and they were happy to swich any items on the menu i couldn't eat. Really enjoyed my lunch.

The best sangria in town. This is where the locals eat. Don't miss out

Little House, Big Flavor. As locals, we are always looking for downtown restaurants that not only please us, but also the many friends from out of town who come to visit. We found the Casa Maya because my daughter is a vegetarian and there are not many restaurants in the historic district that offer many selections (the excellent Floridian was closed that week). So we opted for the Casa Maya after looking at the menu posted outside and I'm glad we did. This family-staffed restaurant serves up wonderfully delicious South American food at an equally wonderful price. The staff is unpretentious and the atmosphere is cozy: think dining in someone's home. Unfortunately, our first visit was on a very busy night and one of our orders (we were a party of 9) was incomplete. However, subsequent visits were problem-free. If you are looking for reasonably priced authentic South American cuisine in a comfortable and cozy environment, the Casa Maya will deliver on all counts.

Put our name and number on the list for a party of 6. We were told it would be around 20 minutes. We walked around, entertained our kids, had them pick out what they wanted and anxiously awaited the meal. 40 minutes later another party of six walked in off of the street and sat right down. Alarmed I went in to check, our name and phone number clearly written on the board inside. They had forgotten about us! Our hotel had forewarned that the food was good but the service terrible- but I never expected this!!! They offered to seat us outside (during a thunderstorm...) While the food smelled good I would not want to support this establishment based on our experience.

We ate here last night. Hole in the wall is an understatement! But delicious food!! We ate on the outside patio and enjoyed everything we had. Will definitely be back! Our appetizer, the Queso, was burnt by the kitchen but we agreed to wait for another. They gave us a free dessert, a mango key lime pie slice. Awesome find in St. Augustine!

Sitting here now, enjoying the lamb and the carnitas. We just stumbled onto the place. What a find. Will definitely be back.

Tucked away on a side street in downtown St Augustine is a jewel of a restaurant. I had the chicken wrap and it was the best I have ever had. Will be going back again today.
Linda
Holy Mole Chicken is excellent as is the guacamole. Will be going back again soon.

Great authentic Mexican food! Exceptional dinner. Small an unassuming this was the best Mexican food we've had in Florida. Thanks to a friend who recommended it we were able to find it easily and park close by.

Delicioso!. The breakfast is my favorite here! Sweetwater coffee is outstanding. Smoothies are refreshing. The meals are creative and authentic Mexican. It is a small "house" with very limited seating, so be prepared to wait. Parking is right across the street on Hypolita. Enjoy!!

Awesome place. Finally found the best mole in Florida.

Black Beans. Awesome beans perfectly seasoned. The addition of rice was unexpected but nice. I will definitely visit this restaurant again on my next visit.

Impressed. My family and I usually eat at the Columbian which is right up the road from this small restaurant. Very casual dining. I had the shrimp tacos which were delicious others in my family had Mahi tacos and steak tacos which were just as good. These aren't your typical tacos. They weren't submerged in cheese, sauce and lettuce. These were full of flavor... I will be back again :)

Chips and guacamole are a little pricey at $8 but I would have to agree with them that they have the best guacamole in town. I had the fish tacos with chipotle mayo. The pico was very fresh and the fish, grouper, was perfectly grilled and nicely sized. The wife had the pepito sandwich which is flank steak, a black bean spread, tomato, and avocado. The steak was extremely flavorful but a little chewy which can happen if not cut properly. Upon further inspection, they cut the meat more for presentation than tenderness. Never the less, it was great. They also had a habanero hot sauce that was a real sleeper. Just a bit will do it but as my meal went on, the more I laid on. If you like heat, give it a try. All in all, Casa Maya was a great meal.

I love everything here. Would eat here everyday if I could. Yummy.

My husband and I were there for lunch and we had the guacamole appetizer and the fish tacos and shrimp tacos. Awesome food, great service. Will be back MANY times

If it opens!. I'm a local and I have many many times tried eating here and never know when it is open or closed! But the other day I finally got in and the food is pretty good. Service is not that great though and the place is too small.

Delicious!. Everything we had was great. Loved the Sangria & the guacamole.

A MUST TRY IN ST AUGUSTINE!. I've eaten at Casa Maya several times now and each time it gets better and better! It's not your traditional Mexican with chimichanga's, burritos, and taco's, but an authentic change of pace from the Yucatan region of Mexico with some very tasty dishes. To say what's good would take too long since everything is good, but I can tell you the Mayan soup and the Carne Asada (skirt steak) are great! Just when I thought their dinner was fabulolus I went there for breakfast and it was even better! If you are in the old town of St. Augustine and want to have a great dining experience, try Casa Maya...you can't go wrong!

"Mayan Soup" We always eat here when we are in St. Augistine and have never been disappointed. Love a bowl of Mayan soup for a starter.

They're closed on Tuesdays. So don't read all the tasty reviews, get all pumped, then have to settle for pizza. :) we're going back today for take two!

I'll start with this... I ate there 4 times in 3 days. Enough said?! I'm a NATIVE Floridian and see my share of bad food in touristy towns... I just happened upon this little restaurant as it was near my hotel. I travel quite a bit and eat out just as much. I LOVE flavor (why else eat?), appreciate good service, eat organic, often eat vegetarian meals and want someone to WANT to prepare my food with care. At Casa Maya - I was able to have all of this and more! Everything from the OJ, to the tomatillo sauce, salsa, spices, corn tortillas, Hot Habenero sauce and seafood was FRESH, FRESH, FRESH! I've heard the owners came from Mexico to start this business... thus AUTHENTIC Mexican flavor (not your typical $.99 taco joint, Thank God!). MAD PROPS to energetic Jennifer and David - my friendly servers who greeted me, the solo traveler, with a smile everytime I walked through the door. You can tell these folks are family. I work in the Jacksonville area on occassion and would make special effort to return to Casa Maya for good food and friends, along with a sunset over the old city of St Augustine (best view walkiing over Bridge of Lions or at Porpoise Point - Vilano Bch)! Parking lot across the street and only two blocks from water.

Amazing Food, Awful service!. I have been to Casa Maya multiple times and have never had any complaints. Food is always fantastic and service has always been good up until this last time that myself and 5 others went for lunch. First, we waited what seemed like hours for them to take our drink order. Then after we waited for another long period of time, it took more time for them to take our food orders and it was not even busy. Then, My friend ordered a pork sandwich that came with avocado's which is fine, except for the fact that he is allergic to avocado's and the description of what he ordered did not say that avocado's were in there, So my friend politely asked our server if he could get a sandwich minus the avocado due to his allergic reaction and our server was completely indifferent about it and coped an attitude. Throughout our visit at the Casa Maya today, our server seemed completely agitated and not very helpful. Then, at the end when it came time to pay, our server never asked if we wanted the whole check together or separate, so he brought 6 people 1 huge bill, that needed to be separated, then he became aggravated about splitting the bill and stated he could not remember who had what and shrugged his shoulders at the group. The service was so bad, that we are debating going back even though the food really is good!. Its ashame about the bad service and that it was our Friend's first time there, and I recommended this place..

Not your ordinary Mexican food. The steak tacos were great'

Hot sauce!. I just got a Cuban and a beer and the Cuban was good...but the most memorable thing was the hot sauce! Its homemade and awesome so I bought a bottle. I would like to go back when I have more time, as the service was slow. I hear good things about the queso though...

MY OH MAYA!. Absolutely fell in LOVE with this place! So far in the last month, I've visited twice.. yep, that good!
On my first visit I was driving back from Jacksonville and decided to spend the afternoon in historic St.Augustine. On a whim we walked into CASA MAYA, a small place, with a lot of character. We ended up finding a tiny table by the entrance and although the room was tight it was well worth it! I had the QUESO FUNDIDO w. Spinach & Mushroom & the Veggie Wrap served w/ a side of chips! Very fresh and flavorful, highly affordable!
A few weeks later I was raving on and on about it & took a drive with a friend, we arrived a tad too late for the Lunch and was told they reopened at 5:30pm for dinner, why the hell not, right? (mind you, I hadn't had a single bite to eat!)
When 5:30 FINALLY rolled around, I ran.. not walked to the restaurant, I got to admit, the service was not up to par as it was last time. We waited sometime to get a menu, our order was taken, but not promptly delivered. sadly my wrap wasn't there so I ordered the Mayan Soup & the Veggie Empanada for appetizers. The soup was the first to come out, as the restaurant slowly got packed.. about 20mins later our server walked by and apologized for the wait and explained the veggie empanadas were made from scratch and took longer to prepare, a little warning would've been nice! I felt bad, because I had raved about the place, and our service was so slow.. The soup was AMAZING! The empanadas.. eh.. hardly any veggies in it as much as cheese and the dough was not your traditional Spanish dough but more of a flaky/dessert dough.
My friend had the fish for her entree and as for me, I had the veggie burrito. Her fish was a tad salty, but all and all very flavorful & mine veggie was so tasty there was hardly a memory of that thing on my plate! I will definately be back, although I won't arrive starving as I did!

Amazing flavor. Very small restaurant with amazing food. We ordered the queso fundido with chicken. The seasoning was just amazing. Very rich. Fish tacos were just as good. I would steal the salsa recipe if I could. Our new favorite restaurant in St. Augustine.
Mike M.
Casa Maya. The service was great, even though it was one guy during a semi-busy lunch hour. Food was absolutely awesome. Blue-corn chips and salsa are a must as far as appetizers go, and the mahi tacos and cuban sandwich are good choices. Ask for the habanero sauce if you want a little extra kick. I plan on returning to this restaurant pretty much every time I come back to St. Augustine, which will be often. Only con I can think of is that it is a little cramped so not really good for big groups, but that's part of its charm.
George
Good food. But, not many tables and slow turnover.
Chris Cox
A hesitant yes-the food tasted very fresh, very quant atmosphere, it the food was a bit bland. Wife and I got Mayan Soup, the pepito sandwich and the Mayan wrap. The soup was the best thing we had. If we come back (we won't) we'd order the soup and cubans-they looked great. Close, but didn't stand out.
Michelle Kerr
I love this place! The dining room is small just like being at a friends house. Especially with the place also being tucked away from the main drag. The owners are lovely and the food is deliciously fresh. I will be sure to return when I am next in the area.
Keith
Great fish tacos. Warm chips and excellent salsa. Decent sangria. Atmosphere is more barlike.
