Review Grande Mere Inn Restaurant - Stevensville

Daniel Medina Díaz
I recently had the pleasure of dining at a local gem, which surpassed my expectations in a region with limited culinary choices. The establishment excels in delivering a gastronomic experience reminiscent of home-cooked meals, a rarity in today's restaurant scene. The Chicken Parmesan, a standout dish, showcased a delightful harmony of flavors and textures. The chicken, enveloped in a perfectly seasoned breadcrumb coating, was fried to golden perfection, evoking the essence of traditional home frying techniques. However, I must note an area ripe for refinement - the bar service. The Old Fashioned, a classic cocktail, was presented with an unconventional twist of a half orange, diverging from the traditional garnish. While innovation in mixology is commendable, the excessive ice and modest portion size detracted from the rich, robust flavors of the bourbon. This aspect of the experience, though minor, left room for improvement in an otherwise exceptional dining experience. In future visits, I anticipate seeing how this establishment evolves, particularly in its cocktail offerings.

My husband and I dropped in for drinks and an appetizer. The owner/manager was extremely attentive and helped us find a great spot in the bar area. Service was outstanding and the mushrooms were fantastic. We will be back for dinner soon!

I wish I could give our server more than 5 stars. We really appreciated the service and food recommendations. She even brought me a candle for my to-go birthday dessert as I was too full from our amazing dinner. Thank you!

It was our first time here and will definitely be back. Ava was our waitress and she was amazing. Very attentive and made us feel so welcome. The food was excellent. We loved everything about this place. Highly recommend

WOW! Exceptional establishment. I can not say enough positive things about this superb restaurant, the enthusiastic, friendly staff, & the incredibly welcoming, entertaining, & amiable owner. Let's start with the amazingly savory food. We got the seafood platter, and the plate was overflowing with all the seafood delicacies. Everything was mouth-watering delicious. Lobster tail, blackened swordfish, fresh lake caught perch, and the crab stuffed shrimp. I seriously could not choose a favorite item because each morsel was so distinctive & enjoyable. It was apparent that they take great pride in all their food. Even the house made salad dressings are delightfully enjoyable. We had their blue cheese and French dressings. Both were the best I've tasted. The Grande Mere is so rich in history too. Take a moment to look at all of it's pictures and adornments. A big hearty thank you to the most gracious owner, Charlie. You've earned yourself a lifelong fan and customer. Slainte!

Always a winning dining choice for a fine dining experience . The cosmopolitan is fantastic. Warm friendly atmosphere I do recommend making reservations.

Service and food were good. I thought the pasta that came with the chicken was a bit bland, Maybe they serve it that way for customers to add salt and pepper later? I'm not sure.

Came upon this place in our way up north. Read the reviews and gave it a try . Excellent food, service and lots of locals enjoying their neighborhood gathering place. Steaks were huge and lobster excellent. I ate an appetizer for my dinner and couldn’t finish. Take the time to go out in their back garden benches overlooking Lake Michigan at night. Just beautiful.

Grand Mere has been a family favorite for so long. I finally got to experience it for the first time and was not disappointed at all. I had the escargot appetizer, mushroom soup, and the walleye special and my husband had the duck with peppercorn sauce. Everything was delicious and the entire staff were very friendly, attentive, and fun. I can't wait to go back when I'm in the area again.

Recommended by local friends while we were visiting, this restaurant did not disappoint! The brie and puff pastry appetizer was delightful, a whole triangle of delicious brie in a cherry glaze. My husband got the jumbo shrimp and I got the crab stuffed shrimp, both delicious. Enjoyed the cranberry bog martini, a cranberry version of a French martini. Finished it off with the bread pudding. Everything was great. The staff was delightful, helpful and extremely pleasant! We will be back the next time we visit. It started snowing the day we were there, but on a beautiful day the lake view from our window seat would be gorgeous!

Great dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine for $100 with over a 20% tip included! We were impressed with the complimentary bread with pate and flavored butter! We split the seafood platter with lobster tail, stuffed shrimp, breaded perch, and blackened swordfish. The dish came with two sided and was plenty for two for $50. We were way too full but the dessert menu looked incredible!

Have been here a few times. The service is impeccable. Brought our 18 month granddaughter and the server Debbie took special care for her. The food and atmosphere are fantastic. You won't be disappointed. Love this place.

Very good restaurant. Nice point of view for Michigan Lake sunset. Food was good and i have really enjoyed some dishes with fish, appetizer and main course. If you want a good place to taste good seafood, it will be definitely one of the best choices around Benton Harbor.

Very pleasant staff. Good menu well-executed and served by nice waitstaff. Even the table busser did a nice job. Grand Mere is unpreposessing from the roadside, which makes the interior and its views a delightful surprise.

Our trips here are few and far between these days but every time we make the journey, usually for a special occasion, the service and food are stellar. This last trip was no exception. All of it was top notch.

The best food and best service anywhere! It was wonderful and had enough for 2 meals. I even got a free dessert for my birthday

Great food and service. Full menu at the bar. Highly recommend

For our taste, this is the best upscale restaurant in the area. But not so upscale that you can't order a Miller High Life beer. "If you got the time, we got the beer". I had the Filet, ordered it Medium, it came out perfect. My wife had the perch, which is always good. If you like Liver & Onions, they have the best I've ever tasted. A few weeks back, my wife and 5 of her friends went here for dinner and 4 of them ordered the Liver & Onions. My son likes their Roast Duck. He orders this often. I can't imagine anyone not liking this restaurant. Great view of Lake Michigan also......

Our first time dining at Grande Mere Inn although my husband and I have been coming to this area for over 40 years. We enjoyed an excellent meal with dear friends and had a great view of the sunset. Our server was the best! (I think her name is Kathy).

Always wonderful! We did not have a reservation, but they accommodated us quite quickly. We were also very impressed to see the wine list is still stellar! Perch was great, walleye just as good! Still a Stevensville institution which deserves a visit for the beautiful sunsets as well as a great meal!

The food was incredible, the atmosphere welcoming, and the host/owner hilarious! Will definatey be back and recommend to others. Dont forget to ask about the famous duck but be careful when he gives you a chocolate...lol

Very small, tables on top of each other. Highly priced for area and food not matching price point. Selection too small.

Great food the owner Is incredible the place has a real charm about it !

A local icon. Food is exceptional, and the atmosphere is unparalleled. Charlie is stepping into some big shoes, with the help of Matt and the rest of the staff. Whenever you're in southwest Michigan, make a point to have dinner here.

Everyday for a living we take either tourist or locals fishing out of Saint Joseph. The conversation, "where's a good place to eat" always comes up... Grande Mere is where we suggest, specificly because we want them to come back to Southwest Michigan! Great service, quality food, amazing atmosphere.

Atmosphere was great and the view is incredible. However, I asked for a medium well steak and it was damn near rare/meduim rare in the inside. The cost of the restaurant is also significantly expensive for what you get. Could be because they have a monopoly on the local market

It was John and I's first time. We had looked up a place that had escargot as it is one our favorites. This place was lovely, sitting with excellant service. The pate was excellent and all the food was amazing. We took a chocolate tort thing home and my husband adored it. We will be back.
Cindy Modson Koldys
Went yesterday and poor service and the food was just ok. Our waitress Michelle had a big birthday party and took our order and she never came ask if everything was ok. The food was not that great.
Steven Daoust
Great place. Fine dining but a casual vibe! Time it right and you get a beautiful view of a Michigan sunset from the main dining rooms!

We always have amazing service and excellent food! They have their own in house brew called exit 22 porter, which is delicious. Love this place!

Great food, fast friendly service, and great lake tavern atmosphere

First Time Visitors ~ Fans Forever!. While visiting St. Joe, Michigan for the first time we accidentally discovered the Grande Mere Inn and boy are we glad we did!
We arrived later in the evening on a Saturday night without reservations and were seated immediately in the bar for a cocktail while we waited for a table to open up in the dining room. The gentleman who was the host was absolutely delightful. After only 10-15 minutes the host came back for us and took us to a table by the window in the dining room. The view was outstanding. We started off with an appetizer of Baked Brie in Puff Pastry with Michigan Cherry Sauce ~ OMG ~ I thought I had died and gone to heaven. It was incredible! Our salads were offered with homemade dressing (yummy) and fresh baked bread. For dinner, we both ordered the Lake Perch ~ again...outstanding. We enjoyed our meal while watching the most amazing sunset over Lake Michigan. It was the perfect romantic evening. We will DEFINITELY go back the next time we are in the area.

Horrible Meal. The special was beef stroganoff - the wasn't what I was served! A bowl of cold egg noodles with shredded beef, mushrooms and a scoop of sour cream plopped on top. It was disgusting. $17 for a meal I couldn't eat. The waitress never bothered to ask if there was a problem with my meal. This was a pricey mistake that I won't make again.

Nice Place. This place has some excellent menu items to offer from yummy burgers to king crab legs. Bartenders and servers are great! They make some kick ass martinis- you really get two for the price of one... they generously pour and give you the leftovers over ice. Desserts are home made and they use local seasonal food items!

Grande Mere Inn. I've got to say from living in the Stevensville area, this is one of the only more upscale restaurants around. The food quality seems to depend on what you order; I recommend the baked chicken with potatoes and fresh greens. The berry cobbler for dessert is also pretty darn good. The service here is decent and the place is charming and tasteful, especially the outdoor garden area. My only complaint would be the pricing. I think they totally overcharge considering the location, service and quality, but hey, they can get away with it.

Oh My Gosh!. I decided to go to this restaurant off of recommendations of some coworkers. Considering what we paid, the meal was not good and the service was lacking. Below is a check list of what went wrong.
1) Silverware was dirty - When I showed the two dirty spoons to the person busing the tables she stated "oh yeah, I remember those spoons". My nine year old later identified the contaminant as blueberry filling from the blueberry buckle that was the featured dessert. In addition when my daughter had soup - that spoon was also dirty.
2) The lettuce in the salad was brown. Not just wilted but brown on the edges.
3) My daughters vegetables were way over cooked and had a hair on it.
4) When blueberry buckle dessert was brought to the table it had cold spots like it was heated up in the microwave.

The staff has clearly lost the passion for fine dinning. The chef has some of the best produce in the country at his doorstep in SW Michigan and he doesn't take advantage of it during harvest season in early September.

Amazing Place!. I am the weekend innkeeper at a local B&B in St. Joe. I send literally hundreds of our guest here every summer. Everyone absolutely loves it every time!

Didn't live up to the hype.... EVERYONE around here has recommended this restaurant to me for special occasions. I decided to take my mother her for her birthday when she came to visit.
The lake view is a pretty far away view, nothing too close, but you can see it.
I ordered the filet, which is my favorite cut of meat. It was a bad cut...very tough, and waaaaay overdone. The sides served with it were pretty plain-jane...nothing I expected for the price. We did get the escargot for an appetizer and it was decent, but nothing spectacular. Everyone in the dinner party was disappointed. For this price in a city you could have a way better dinner.
However, the maitre d' was very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere wasn't of a fine dining establishment, but of a country cottage. I think the price and hype reflect a different kind of restaurant than is actually there. I was not impressed enough to try it again.

Best escargot this side of Paris...no joke.
