Review The Funkadelic - Sunset Valley

Elliott Nguyen
We’ve been here three times now and every time the food is delicious and the service is really exceptional. The first two times, we went on a weekend and it gets supppper packed; even when we went today on a weekday, it had a pretty steady crowed, especially as we were leaving around 11:00. This place really hustles to make great food, provide excellent service, and pretty reasonable pricing. One thing I really want to highlight are the reasonable portion sizes. There are far too many places that serve gargantuan plates of food, much of which goes to waste.

This brunch spot is a MUST if you come to Austin! My husband and I stopped in on a Sunday morning around 11:30am. There was a line, but it moved pretty quickly. (Honesty do not let the line steer you away) We quickly ordered and got sat. The food came out relatively quick for how busy it was. Pictured: The Heuvos Racheros, the Hash scramble, Pupusas, and the chips and queso side dish. Everything was delicious and did not disappoint.

My goodness! Why did it take me a year in a half to finally come around to *Funkadelic*! Either way, I am so HAPPY my boyfriend and I decided to have brunch/lunch here! We were greeted by one of the workers who was so warm and knowledgeable on the menu, we decided to order everything he recommended - the special burger, migas, vanilla pancake, and churro waffles! And let me tell you...the food was AHHMAZING! Funkadelic's environment and food are lively just like their owner, Michael who greeted us and everyone there! Absolutely PHENOMENAL and can't wait to go back!

lieutenant commander worf killed it. Chefs special breakfast tacos “that are not on the menu”, are really good. The hash scramble was meh. Pancake didn’t even need syrup. Coffee is help your self so why pay 1$ refills next door?

Very nice kid friendly breakfast joint. Fun and unique menu items. Very clean and fresh. My only critique would be that I think the chicken and waffles would be better with either drums, wing or breast. Thigh meat is a little fatty when fried IMHO. I was also surprised that the sausage side is link sausage rather than breakfast sausage. Look forward to trying the hash and toad in a hole the next visit.

You know I'm beginning to realize that brunch in Austin is not just overrated at this point, but beyond a waste of time. After two weeks open I'd expect the kitchen flow to be pretty decent, perhaps they were understaffed on Sunday... We waited over an hour and a half from walking in to eating. 20 of those minutes were in line. Food was fresh, but left me wanting double the portions. The Pupusas which were recommended, were bland and had little going on, apple filled ebelskivers / aqua frescas were solid though. Seating was so cramped you have to shimmy through to get by, on top of that you have to figure out to seat yourself after standing there awkwardly for a good five minutes. (don't forget to grab your water/utensils too) At the end of the day it was 50 bucks for a beet salad, a street food south American dish and a glass of watermelon juice with a decent tip. (Ouch) I'd recommend checking this place out on a weekday if you're going to try it, maybe it's different.

Very bright open space with really good options for breakfast food. Service is friendly , fast and make sure you get some coffee before you leave. I'll definitely be making more visits to this place.

The Funkadelic is an interesting, amazing little brunch place! You order at the counter and someone will tell you where to sit right before you order, or after depending on how busy it is. It can get pretty busy on a Sunday morning, but it is so worth it. I get the Pupusas every time it go. I have tried my husbands food every time and everything he has gotten so far has been amazing too. The pancakes have a yummy vanilla flavor, and the chips and queso are awesome. I could go on and on, but I will spare you.

A fabulous new brunch spot with a really interesting menu! I love love love the starter tostadas, and the funnel cake fritters come with an excellent watermelon dipping sauce that is so so good. And, the owner Michael is really friendly and welcoming. Can't recommend this place enough!

Delicious food, and great staff!! I highly recommend this place. Weekends get a bit crazy, but weekdays are nice and chill.

Sitting here at the Funkadelic and I couldn’t leave without writing a review! Wow!!! Some of the best brunch I’ve ever had in Austin! We had the pulpusas, the brioche French toast with grilled berries, the funnel cake fritters and sides of the potato latke hash! A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! The presentation is beautiful and not pretentious, large portions, and typical Austin brunch pricing! The staff was all incredibly friendly and the environment feels like someone converted a funky little garage into a restaurant...very ATX! I can’t wait for next weekend to come back and bring more people and try more of the menu! The funkadelic will be a new stop on our brunch train for sure!!

Well, we have a winner here!!! My husband Chris requested that I look for a new place for bkfst/brunch this morning since there are always so many places opening here in Austin. Funkdelic is relatively new and not too far from us so we went. The food is GREAT-- locally sourced, fresh, clean, made from scratch, and super yummy. There are definitely some innovative items on the menu (churro waffles with horchata to name one), but none of the fusion stuff that so many places are putting out lately. The decor is crisp, bright, and fun, and spic and span clean. The owner and and all the staff we came in contact with were positive, cheerful, and authentic. It is walk up and order (which gives you a great view into the kitchen) and then they deliver meals to your table. And...the coasters they give you to place on your table so the servers will know where to find you are the best! They are black and white photos of family and friends of the owner. I did not see them all, but we had a sweet photo of his mom. We will definitely be returning and have already told several of our friends about it. It is definitely family friendly. We tend to shy away from that term because we do not have children and prefer a quiet meal, but everyone was well behaved and the families that were there seemed to be enjoying each others company. Dog friendly patio for when the weather is nice.

Visited for the first time on Saturday and had a great experience. Met the Manager/Owner and he was very gracious in "correcting" us in how we sat ourselves before ordering (which we did not know wasn't supposed to be done) so for first timers you MUST order before seating yourselves, there's no holding tables when the line goes out the door...and the line will go out the door. Seating, unfortunately, is very limited but for the space they've done well with arrangements. The staff was friendly and kudos to the chefs/cooks b/c the food was GREAT and presentation of meals was beautiful. IMO a LITTLE pricier than I would have expected as a brunch for 4 adults is going to run you over $60.00, as was in our case but I would go back again. And they have a great kids menu for those with kiddos. If you plan on weekend brunch know that if you get there between the hours of 10am and 11:30am there will be a line out the door to get in to order.
