Review Doc's Backyard Grill - Sunset Valley

Chris Saunders
Doc’s Backyard is a great place for families to hang out under a small grove of live oak trees. They have a large outdoor area, with many picnic tables and a play area. Despite there being many people and kids running around, I was able to find a seat and was waited on quickly by very friendly staff. Doc’s has a full bar and at least 20 beers on tap. The basic cheeseburger was charbroiled and good, but was slightly overcooked - I also sampled the cheese fries which were the bomb. Looking for a place where a few couples can hang out together with their kids and also get a few beers? Look no further. The patio is dog friendly too!

This was very nice family friendly restaurant. First the service was a 10. Sarah our server was so nice and checked on us she was amazing. The food was so delicious. I love hamburgers and we never find a place that I can say. Oh yeah I'm coming back for this. Well I'm saying that now. The burgers were so good. My husband isn't a fan of burgers but he enjoyed his he had a tort burger. Came with a tortilla instead of a bun. So I'll be doing that at home now for him. It had pico de Gallo, guacamole, and cheese. This restaurant had tvs for sports and playground outside for kids and Outdoor seating. Very nice I think I found a top 5 for me. Please hit a thumbs up on my post. 😊

Love the indoor or outdoor seating. The food is always great. It is bar food prices, but the flavors are elevated. Just delicious. Service was great, waitstaff was attentive.

We had a really great experience here, even on a busy Sunday. The food was excellent, the outdoor space is great to enjoy and a lot of fun for kids in the playground area. The service was impeccable - our server was awesome, probably the best we’ve had in Austin ever. Really enjoyed our time here today. P.s. their fried pickles are the best!

Doc’s is definitely my new favorite! Their happy hour specials are the best I’ve seen so far. The drinks are very well made and so are the appetizers. We sat out in the patio under one of the misting fans, it was so nice! There are also multiple TVs and a large playground out back for the kids to enjoy. This is a great spot for anyone and everyone to hang out, they are even dog friendly! The staff of course is what made this experience amazing and we plan to come back very often for happy hour.

Great food! My jalapeño burger was fabulous. Large playground with ample room for kids to play.

I’m going to guess they’ve had better days. But this day. 10 min for a server to check in with me. One bartender. Couldn’t make the drink I ordered off their menu. Couldn’t substitute a different tequila for the drink. Really??!!! Servers running around saying someone needed to stop and clean the silverware. They were out. In the end. The server gave me my drink for free, which was a nice gesture

The outdoor ambience was very relaxed, the menu was well-varied, and the array of 40 draft brews was formidable! The food was really good, especially the onion rings! Jack, our server, was a paragon of professionalism. He juggled the 24 patrons attending my retirement party without missing a beat and was accommodating and wonderfully personable throughout the hours we were there. The misters helped cool things down, but were only available on the patio near the entrance, so some of the older patrons where we were sitting farther out had to leave early due to the heat. Seating farther out was well-shaded, but numerous grackles dropped "bombs" from above.

On 4th of July 2019 I went with my mom and 5 yr old daughter to Doc's Backyard on Brodie in Austin, Texas. We wanted to go to a family friendly restaurant where she could play. My daughter has celiac disease, for her to be safe while eating I took in food for her to eat. I still bought food for my mom and I to eat. I told the waitress she had no problem with it. I asked to speak to a manager after my food was cold and had nothing to drink for more than 15 minutes. The only manager that was there was very rude from the minute I tried to speak to him. When I said why we came there, and mentioned my daughter's food he jumped down my throat about bringing in outside food. Very ugly telling me there are signs everywhere and it is not allowed. I told him why I brought it in, cause she has celiac disease. He didn't care still at this point yelling it's not allowed. After he walked away. I was very upset, this happened right infront of my daughter and the whole restaurant. My mom went to speak to him. Asked to speak to another manager but he was the only one, the waitress couldn't believe how he treated us. She went to get contact information for my mom. The other manager who's name is JOE, came out still very rude, yelled at my mom saying oh well he contated his boss to let them know. She said that's fine she will be speaking to him too. She asked for his contact information and he gave it to him. She started to walk out and decided to go talk to him again. Very calmly she asked calmly I would like to ask you a question, he said "well that would be nice", again hatefully. She asked if he had children and he replied, 2. She told him that she prayed they never get a life changing disease that can cause serious health issues. He "laughed" and said he has "it" all through his family. At that moment I walked in with my daughter. I could tell that he was continuing to badger my mother. I told him it wasn't right to deny my daughter to eat food for for disability. He laughed at me too. He then extremely loudly motioned to the door and told us (my mother, my FIVE yr old daughter and I) to "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY RESTAURANT!". I did tell him to kiss my a** and we would be speaking to someone above him. This happened in the full place with all customers watching and listening. Again, with my 5 year old daughter present. Without the manager's loud attitude and anger, none of this would have escalated to the situation it did. Never was the bad, slow service nor cold food apologized for. All he did was tackily and loudly say he would take care of the bill. He showed no empathy for my daughter's situation nor for the fact she is a young child listening to all this. My Mom and I have considered Docs as a family friendly place with the playground etc. Your employee certainly managed to change that view. Never did we demand or expect her to be able to eat your food. And the waitress never once said anything about her not being able to eat the food we brought it. I have to say this is the most disappointing experience we have had in any restaurant. I am my daughter's advocate, she is only 5 years old she can NOT speak up for herself and her lifetime disease.

How does this have 85% liked it??? All of the reviews say "doesn't like it." And it was AWFUL. They don't seem to have the tables numbered to where the staff knows where any food goes-- in our extremely long wait, we were offered quite a lot of food we didn't order. My son's drink (chocolate milk in a carton) took 20 minutes to reach our table. None of the food we had (burger, pickle chips, kids pbj, wings, sweet potato fries, pulled pork nachos) was good. Most of it was not seasoned (the fries were not seasoned at all-- gross) and the burger, wings, and nachos had the look of food that had been sitting under a heat lamp. The kids pbj was a packaged pbj from a grocery store. Stay away if you care about efficient service or good food.

Ruined by their door policy. Doc's Backyard has promise. However they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by their weird and idiosyncratic policy on the doors that open to the patio, Tonight with all 3 doors open and the wind blowing a gale through 1 of them (the left one) despite 3 requests to close that door, they decided it was easier to close the middle one. This despite the fact that the middle and right door were not channeling the wind like the other. Should have realised they were oblivious to this since they had the fans going before we asked for them to be shut off. The result? Annoyance and cold food as the wind swept in and ruined an otherwise pleasant experience. It will take a lot of persuasion before I return.

PLACE SUCKS, great bar for kids?!?!?!. Real disappointed in the service last night. yes it was packed, but is that any reason to mess up a drink order and then have Ms. Priscilla offend the patron's choice of shot by asking, "why'd you get a girly shot?" hey Priscilla, here's a question, "why'd you not get a tip?!?!" Or the fingerless manager who thought the same insult would work if from a man (to a table full of men bigger than him, smart guy). great service! by the way, how hard is it to tell that a shot was made wrong when it's light yellow and it's supposed to have whiskey in it?!?!

TVs, mediocre food, bad service , and under-trained bar staff, KIDS EVERYWHERE at a bar . . . go get 'em Doc's!

Wanted to like it, but.... Just can't do it. First, the positive, our waitress (can't remember her name, was friendly, helpful and provided good service. Great selection of cold beers!). The rest - not so good. The hamburgers are overcooked and nothing special, the Frito pie with eggs on top was salty and the eggs were cooked to death even though we ordered over easy. The TV volume made me feel like I was at a heavy metal concert sitting right in front of a speaker. I know it's a sports bar, but jeez...

Was Awsome 1st time there food was Delicious and my 4yr old was able to enjoy it. They have a small little play area but it's great for toddlers. Wait staff was great and curtious. An overall great experiance. Will be a returning customer.

There's better. Mediocre burgers and pricey unless you go on Mondays to get the 2 for 1 deal. That may not be going on at this time. Inattentive service. The burgers were cooked properly but served room temperature. Good choice of beers but not of them were served with ahead on the beer. Been there twicw. That is enough. There are too many burger joints to go back again.

Love This Place!. The food is good and the staff and the people are fabulous.
Craig
Mediocre over priced burgers and they forgot the bacon. Won't be coming back.

HORRIBLE SERVICE. I went here with my boyfriend and one of the many waitresses wearing barely anything at all had the gall to hit on my boyfriend. If you enjoy cold food due to the terrible waitstaff constantly standing around, chit-chatting instead of working and an extremely uncomfortable atmosphere made possible by the nasty girls that work there, this place is for you! (Or, you could just go to a strip club, where the service would actually be prompt and it would be acceptable for the waitstaff to be touching you constantly.)
