Loved this place. Very authentic. My husband has lived in Austria and Germany worked and traveled extensively in the hospitality business. Bier is delicious and served in the traditional way. We’ll be back for sure!
Mr. Dunderbak's has been a Tampa staple for as long as I can remember. Their food is excellent, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and now they are brewing their own beer which is excellent. If you've never been here before, this is a must visit restaurant.
I highly recommend checking out the soup of the day which they make from scratch. I also highly recommend the Kassler Rippchen and the Schweinhax which is only available in limited quantities on the weekends.
I love their beer selection and you should try their cheese plate to go along with your beer selections. Fabulous experience and friendly staff who will help you make selections if you are having trouble deciding.

Didn't know what to expect when I pulled into a shopping center, but that rapidly changed when I saw the Biergarten. This place oozes pub. All in all it was a good meal and I'll be back again.
Currywurst Berlin with Bratwurst and Weisswurst
The smell of curry hits you when it arrives, the wurst is in a tomato sauce, it's like a curry accented take on a BBQ sauce. Tasty! The sausage has a smooth consistency but I couldn't tell the difference between the two sausage types.
Saure Sahne Schnitzle, Sauerkraut, kartoffelsalat
The Schnitzel is like a country fried steak for you southerners out there. The sauce was similar to a stroganoff but with a little more . Half the veal was really tender but the other half was a little chewy. Overall it was very good.
The sauerkraut was killer! Tangy but not overpowering and not bitter. The German potato salad was vinegary, as designed, the bacon was unexpected. It was ok.
Jagerschnitzle, spätzle, and garlic potatoes
The Schnitzel had the same texture as my previous one but the gravy was the differentiator. It was a brown gravy with a strong beef flavor. It was also tasty, but of the two I preferred the sour cream version.
The garlic potato cubes were simple and tasty, they had a good crisp to the outside. They were seasoned well. The spätzle were ok, they were mild in flavor, a little too mild for my taste.
Apple streusel and vanilla ice cream
Your classic apple pie a la mode. Eat the streusel with your ice cream. I am a compartmental eater generally and at first the cinnamon, allspice and cloves(?) hit hard, but they cut through the plain vanilla and work really well together.

July '16: Potato pancakes lacked onion or any notabale flavor(s); had the texture of mashed (hooey). Red cabbage lacked flavor.
HP octoberfest was good; the pork schnitzel w/ sour cream sauce was a superior substitute for the jaeger on the schnitzel & spatzle. It had large slices of fresh mushrooms & garlic, but Herr Dunderbak "why are you so cheap on your gravies/sauces"? One would think they're out of Ft Knox.
The pork (tenderloin) schnitzel was the best. The spatzle was very good, & Shad, our waiter, was attentive.
We've been here twice & the traffic (Bearss, Bruceby Downs, everywhere) has been ridiculously bad each time. We don't live in the area, so we probably won't be back.
Initial visit: Drove two hours (roundtrip) to experience what all the hype was about for this "legendary" german eatery. We found that the potato pancakes, schweine jaegerschnitzel, red cabbage, & hot potato salad were all excellent.
The pancakes were robust w/ onion; the schnitzel was tenderloin (nothing but lean pork, tender & flavorful) & lightly crusted; the potatoes in the hot salad were as close to being perfectly cooked as I can recall.
We weren't as high on the jaeger sauces (both brown & white lacked flavor; how about more base & garlic), the spatzle (should never be served without a good dredging of sauce/gravy in my opinion), & the chocolate cake (tasted like one of those frozen cakes). I was especially surprised by the ambiance of the dining area. It was more of a Cracker Barrel gift shop atmosphere than a "BIERGARTEN".
Our waitress (Keri) was charming & attentive. Our meal w/ appetizer, two entrees, three beers, & dessert came to $66 (tax & tip incl).
Awesome beer selection! This is where my friends and I go when we want a night out in Tampa! The food is good, and we all different favorites!
All I can say about this place is: Das ist sehr gut! Great food and excellent selection of beer. Even if you don't like beer or aren't of age this is still a good German restaurant with a unique atmosphere unlike anything else in Tampa. I recommend the Chicken a la Dunderbak's and a pint (or liter if you're up for it) of a hefty beer.
The food, as always was great. I tried the sour cream schnitzel. Delicious. My husband had the hawaiian schnitzel, which he liked. The service was great, very friendly. The is one of our favorite places to eat.
Just passing through and found this place. So very glad we stopped. Food was so very good. And the staff was very attentive. Like German food this is one of the best I have been to lately.
Quirky, fun, and good choices.. The German food was good. The beers were excellent. It looks like a Bavarian Biergarten with communal benches, which took some adjustment for me, but it ended up being fun. Lots of non-university locals.
We went in late last night for a quick bite and loved it! My boyfriend had the Ruben with Pome Frites and it was so tasty. I got the kielbasa and potatoe pancakes. I loved too! Beer was awesome! Everything was awesome!

Solid German Cuisine in a fun atmosphere... Whats not to like about Dunderbak's? Freshly prepared German cuisine paired with a large and diverse beer selection and a guy playing an accordian! Service can be a bit spotty and the place is quite noisy. Not the best choice for a business dinner but a fine choice if you are in that part of town. The schnitzel and sausages are amazing. Be sure to check out some of the amazing side dishes too.
Excellent beer selection with staff well educated in good beers to suggest. The food is good for all sorts of moods from light snack, sandwiches and chips, to full on delicious german entrees.
AMAZING!!! SO many choices for beer and the schnitzel Holstein is SO yummy!! Great place for a night out with friends, just being an appetite and thirst for amazing beer!

Nothing like it .... I originally went because they had a fantastic tap & bottle selection, I'd wager one of the best in Tampa. I began going more often when I moved only two blocks away. The staff is fantastic and knowledgeable. I didn't think I'd be all for the German faire, though it has turned out to be amazing also. I wouldn't know authentic German food if it stepped off a plane at slapped me, but it seems legit. They also label it as "German Inspired" American faire, so if you are the sort in need of a vanilla diet, they've got you covered too. I'll miss this place greatly when I move.

More Pros than Cons. The German cuisine at Mr.Dunderbaks is great. I highly recommend the Suaerbraten, Jager-Schnitzel, Sour Cream-Schnitzel, and get the potato pancakes and sauerkraut. Both of those sides are amazing. I can guarantee it is the best sauerkraut in town. The apple strudel is ok for dessert, but I would recommend taking it home to heat it up and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of it. The only cons to the place is the beer in bottles. The fridge seems to be very disorganized, and it is more the job of the customer to locate a particular beer than your waiter to be able to find a particular bottle. That being said, just scout out the fridge and maybe point your waiter in the right direction and you will have a fine evening.
Great Food and Beer. Outstanding food and beer. The beer selection is one of the best in the Tampa Bay area. Good service and ambiance.

Recommended. Sunday lunch with my daughter was really nice. Great beer selection including my favorite, Hachershore Octoberfest (mispelled) on tap. $8+ change for a liter. A little disappointed that they were out of potato pancakes but the fried pickles, cheese appy and onion rings were very good. Finally the sandwiches are really tasty. The place has a nice vibe and the decor is interesting. Deli case in the restaurant!

Everything was authentic and very delicious. The only bad item that I had was the meatloaf (that had the wrong texture); but I was with 3 other people and everything else I tasted was awesome.
I would defiantly go back for more authentic German food, or possibly just to have some of the best chicken wings I have ever eaten!

Food, Fun... and Beer!. Mr. Dunderbak's is one of the best restaurants around for the faux German experience and casual food, plus a decent place to buy imported German groceries and wine. The sandwiches here are top-notch and definitely the best choices on the menu. Pick one... you can't go wrong. The pierogies are noteworthy, as are the fried pickles. Their soft pretzels are pretty average, whether you choose the American or German style, but ask for a selection of mustards to go with it and it will turn into a taste sensation. Any fan of mustards would be thrilled at the variety and styles, with spicy jalapeño standing as my favorite, followed by cranberry. Aside from the sandwiches and appetizers, any sensible person comes here for the beer. They have a massive selection for a place of their size and most are pretty reasonably priced compared to places like The Brass Tap. Mr. Dunderbak's is usually pretty crowded and almost always loud, so this isn't the place for you if you like to enjoy your meal in peace and quiet.

Awesome and classic!. I've been going here since they were in the University Mall and I've never been disappointed. Always left full of terrific food and beer, not to mention a good time. The owner, JB, really really knows his beers and as a fellow self-described Beer Geek, my hats off to him! The staff can always be counted to be super-friendly and make great recommendations for new beers to try. I had a great pint of Arrogant Bastard one time that I'll never forget. They regularly rotate the beer selection, so it's a fun place to try new beers. And the food is great, too! Oh, the Ruben Dog and I have a long love affair there. It's the stuff of legends. That, the Der Blue Max plus any of the authentic German entrees are amazingly good. You go here to enjoy great food and beer, not to nurse a sucky Mich Ultra and pick at a salad. And they have great live entertainment with bands and German polka. I will always come back here because it's consistently awesome. Well done!

Not veggie-friendly. I love Dunderbak's, and I go there often for the great beer selection. It should be noted though that if you're a vegetarian, then don't expect to have much of a selection to eat. Pretty much the only entree you have is a grilled cheese sandwich, which isn't particularly amazing or a couple boring salads. There are some good side dishes though like the potato pancakes or the pomme frites (ask for some curry ketchup!). I really wouldn't go here if it weren't for the fact that they have some of the best beer in the area.
Love this place! I just recently moved to Tampa from Bamberg Germany and this food is as close to authentic as you can get. Schnitzel and pommes frites are great!! (try them with curry sauce, yum!)

Love Dunderbachs!!. So, just imagine driving to eat dinner and when you walk in the door, you enter Germany. There is a polka player in the middle, there is a beer garden room, a fancy bar, and the restaurant/bar area. There is also a deli and small store that you can purchase imported items.

They also have a great selection of draft beer and bottled beer. For me, I have a negative reaction to the nitrogen gas tanks and they run all of their beers on nitrogen. So for me, I have to buy the bottled beer. Other than that, I love this place!!
We couldn't think of a place for dinner one night and then bam! Mr. Dunderbak's seems like a good idea. The food wasn't too overpriced and there was such a big serving! I've never had German food before but this place just makes good food :$
Good Eats!. When my husband suggested this place I was just not too sure but thought I'd give it a try. This place has awesome food, the fresh sausages/brats, etc. was phenomenal! We've been back several times and have yet to be disappointed ... oh and if they have the goulash, get it - it's fantastic!

As close as you can get. Mr Dunderbak is as close as you can get to good German food in Tampa. The dishes are authentic and reminds me of the bars I visited while I was in German on vacation.
It was an A+. We arrived with a group of 10 or so on a Saturday night, although they were busy they had a spot for us right away. We were enjoying friends and family and wouldn't have minded a wait but it was nice to sit after a long day. Everything we ate was awesome! Awesome German style pretzels for and app and yummy fried pickles... A little too salty for some but I LOVED them! My boyfriend and I shared two entrees... I had Das Reuben (great classic taste!) and he had the Paprika Gulasch and that was THE BEST! Beer selections were great and our service was ever better! We will be back :-)

Schnitzel: Yes, Please. Mr. Dunderbak's never disappoints. Always with a wide selection of quality beer and the perfect amount of breading of anything schnitzel, this is a lunchtime favorite for me.
Ja wohl!. I like this place and having grown up in Munich, it has a very familiar feel. The pommes frites are great & I have eaten many of the sandwiches. The schnitzel is wunderbar! The spaetzle however....which is a shame, since that is one of my favorite German dishes.
Pretty Good Vegetarian Options. We find ourselves here a lot because of the beer options (our friends love beer!). While the majority of the menu is meat, there are a number of things that vegetarians can dine on and enjoy. I have eaten both the veggie reuben, vegetable sandwich and grilled cheese sandwich. I prefer the reuben because the grilled cheese is too much cheese and the vegetable sandwich is only ho-hum. My wife ate the pierogies and she loved them (though I wasn't quite as keen on them as she was). They offer two pretzels (a German and American version). The American version is simply a super pretzel while the German is something much heavier. Still, I prefer the American version. As far as appetizers go, the pomme frites are out of this world (especially when you throw on some spicy mustard and flavored ketchup) and the potato latkes and fried pickles are pretty good too. There are a few other options in the appetizers but I have yet to try them.
When my German heritage needs some attention, this is a great place to visit. My Bavarian grandmother would have loved it.

Favorite. This is probably my favorite place of all time. Just a great atmosphere . If you have never been here its time to visit. I recommend trying a reuben and grabbing a stout imported ale.

Mr. Undertake's is AWESOME!! Whenever my boyfriend and I are in the mood for a good sandwich and a wide selection of draft and bottled beers, Dunderbak's is always the first place that pops into our head!! We drive 40 minutes from St. Petersburg to New Tampa because it's THAT good!! Maybe one day they'll decide to open one in St. Petersburg though (please, please).
Love this place!. Mr. Dunderbak's is one of our favorite spots to eat, have an amazing beer, and gorge on delicious foods. On Friday's we love to take our 3 year old girl to listen to the german and polka music, we can be comfortable and she can be as loud as her little heart desires and we aren't embarrassed. I highly recommend adding their red cabbage in place of their sour kraut (even though that's amazing too)...it's out of this world.
Loves it!. I've been a patron of Mr. Dunderbak's since moving to Tampa in 2001. I spent a lot of time at their location in University Mall as well as their new (and fabulous) location on Bruce B Downs.
Not only is the food and beer ridiculously good, but the staff makes the experience wonderful. Not just the waitstaff, either. The owner himself makes it a point to come by and get to know his customers and that's not something you can say a lot of places around Tampa!

Wunderbar. Just discovered Dunderbak's last year and it has quickly become one of my fave's... festive, laid back atmosphere - solid german food and serious beer list - including LOTS of belgians, combined with a deli and lots of german grocery items for sale. In 2010 I went on a quest to find the best bratwurst in Tampa Bay and theirs is easily in the top 3. Best thing I ate there was Schweineaxen (roast pork), which they serve on Saturdays. Atmosphere isn't frathousy - good mix of patrons from all over. Wish I lived closer!
Mr. Dunderbak's is Wunderbar!. Great place to have a couple of beers with my hubby when we get the chance, but an entertaining place to sit down and eat with the family too! The atmosphere is cozy, the music is lively and the food is delicious!
One of my all-time favorites. I've been visiting Mr Dunderbaks for years when it was at the mall. The new location in New Tampa is a wonderful experience. I lived in Germany for three years and I can say from experience that the food is as about authentic as it can be. I lived across the street from a local gasthaus which I frequented often, and the food is just as good or better. If you aren't familiar with German food, try the Jaegerschnitzel to start. It;s incredible.

Dunderbaks thinks outside the box with their delicious vegetarian reuben, which I would go for any night : ) they also have so many delicious beers......who can resist. Awesome. I love this place. Found while attending USF. Since they moved it is even better than it was in the mall. This place destroys any type of Tap house or WOB anywhere. Selection is insane and unique and unlike WOB the servers know about the beer. The food is TOP NOTCH and any time I am in the area I stop by for lunch.
Small portions but good.. I have been going here for almost 10 years, since they were back in university mall. They used to make big, awesome sandwiches and now they make such smaller sandwiches that I almost sent it back in disgust, but... I went ahead and ate it and left hungry and wish the waitress came to our table more often, we literally noticed it took 10minutes for her to get to our table each time. Hopefully this will change soon or else our long time devotion will be cut.
Gimme more!. I wish this place was closer to me because I would certainly haunt it daily. It has a charming interior and the managerial staff is incredibly helpful and passionate about their business. I was a little fearful of the menu being that I only eat fish as far as meats are concerned. I was very pleasantly surprised! I had a large fresh pretzel with mustard and a veggie pita. Both were yummy and left me craving more. Of course their fame lies with their beer selection which is great. Bring a friend who isn't a fan of beer and witness their mind change before you as the very skilled bar tenders select something they will be buying for a lifetime. this place is great for friends and family.
This place satisfies all of your german needs and desires. the bartender is pretty cute too....
Food is phenomenal, it's dialed in the be precisely German with some polish thrown in, the beer selection is strong with some in house options. Service is always great, between the servers and the owner they're very friendly and they'll walk you through whatever questions you have. The atmosphere is top knotch, great little side are to grab some gems you really can't find anywhere else. Phenomenal job, I'll always come back when om in the area.

Tampa/St.Pete trip Part 1
Very much enjoyed eating at this classic and historical German restaurant. So much to look at and an extensive menu. Very busy but most things were tasty. My favorite were the potato pancakes. There were the perfect consistency and very tasty. The perogies were cold but edible .. the sandwhich were delicious and the beer was flowing. Our waiter was very helpful but very busy .. we waited for refills and items but I just think they were just understaffed.. a problem you see too often now. Will return and enjoy trying more German treats!
Super tasty and delicious food. Big portions. Great and patient service. Awesome atmosphere. Very fun place and felt as if we were transported overseas. Deli, candy, and gifts, too. Huge selection of beer. Definitely not expecting the cool ambiance inside by the looks of the outside. Big place inside with a lot of seating. Seating outside too, but inside is way cooler 😎 literally and figuratively! We will return! Parking was sparse. It's in a strip mall so you have to compete with other businesses to park.
It's been at least 4 years since my last visit to Mr. Dunderbak's & everything was just as good as I remember. From the knowledgeable server, able to make excellent drink recommendations to the delicious food & large portion sizes.
Very glad to see Mr. Dunderbak's is still here & I definitely will not be waiting another 4 years to visit again.

Guten Tag Y'all!
Started our day with a late morning walk through Lettuce Lake Park on the boardwalk. Had to get a small Volksmarch in before the temperatures reached boiling point.
We were referred here by a co-worker, and I am seriously happy we followed up on it.
I was stationed in Germany from 1984-1987 with the US Air Force at a place called Borfink (no longer in service). Lived in Nuebrucke and Birkenfeld.
So obviously, I spent a lot of time eating true German cuisine over the 3 year period.
We also moved here from Columbus, Ohio 5 years ago which has a very large German population that includes an Oktoberfest that is second to none in the US; and also has several German eateries that are simply amazing.
So, it is interesting that we have found an abundance of German themed restaurants down here in Florida; and all have been remarkably good.
Today was no exception. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. Yes, it is cramped and not easy to navigate the on site market, but that means a packed house, right?
Food. I had to have Saurbraten. I think a good one is an indicator of the restaurants German quality. Mine was simply Wunderbar! Probably one of the best since I was in Germany.
Others in our group had Jagerschnitzle, Nuremberg Sausage Plate, and a Reuben.
We did have a Pretzel and fried mushroom as as a starter. Both good. Also had Black Forest Cake and Apple Struedel for dessert. Amazingly good.
A couple house brewed Maibocks were also consumed. Very good and true to the style with that sweet sticky mouthfeel and slightly bitter pop before relaxing into a long dry finish.
Prices were fair for the times we are in. Bartender was our server and he was excellent.
We sat in the bar and watch a little Fussball while dining and it was nice and relaxing. Out in the main room it was a bit more noisy, but that is to be expected.
As far as getting a "true" German gasthaus experience or feeling like a moment reflecting on the visits to Muchen...this does fall a hair short as most of the workers appeared to be students from nearby USF. That is to say, that there were no German accents from the staff. There's a place across the bay that has that part nailed with 2 sisters from Germany.
The true question of the day...will we come back? Ja!

This place was a pretty cool experience but it's not definitely not for everyone. The atmosphere is cool but it's also really cramped inside and it's super loud. The seating situation is also unique and a pretty mixed bag depending on the size of your party. Larger parties get bench seating that don't have any type of back support. It is definitely not desirable and can wear on you if you have any kind of back issues.
The food is really good and the portions are ridiculously huge you will not leave hungry. The deli and the little German specialties market are also really cool. I was stoked to find they actually have a fair amount of non alcoholic beers as well, because I have recently given up alcohol but still love beer and wanted one with my meal. Most places have no non alcoholic beer offerings. I definitely suggest you buy some German candies before you go.
Again this place is awesome but it feels crowded, the seating isn't
very comfortable, and It does get really loud. So you have been warned about that. Everything else though Is awesome. So grab Togo food if cramped and loud turn you off.
The Atmosphere was like being back in Nuremberg. Will, our waiter was great and recommended the food we needed to try. So many different beers,wine,and German foods!
Absolutely amazing atmosphere and food. Ordered the JägerSchnitzel and it was extremely tender and juicy. All of the food was extremely flavorful and I could not get enough of the potato pancakes! Service was a bit slow but it was a bit busy and they seemed understaffed which is not their fault. I cannot recommend this place enough! Amazing vegetarian options too!

We went to Mr. Dunderbaks for my birthday. The food was excellent (as always), the service was awesome (Jose is awesome) and the beer selection would make any beer geek have an organism. We come here several times a year (not during snowbird season). Highly reccomend eating here.
1st time eating German food. It was amazing. Best way I can describe it is comfort food. Deep fried battered pork, fries, and cabbage is I ate which was all delicious. The cabbage is called something else as it's fermented cabbage. Service was outstanding and the restaurant is pretty cool. They got a shop inside and plenty of beer. If you don't know what to get ask the waitress to help you decide. They won't go wrong. I told mine to surprise me and I enjoyed my meal.
Good beer, good food, and German market items like steins. I would recommend a nap after a das von bomb sandwich haha. They have growler service too!
My family and I have been coming here for several years (and bringing friends!) and truly love this hopping little German restaurant! We nicknamed it the German Cracker Barrel because of the really authentic German decor and gift shop-like environment you enter into from the time you walk in the front door 🚪.
Everything my loved ones and I have tried so fad has been very good, even excellently prepared compared to other options.
I usually order the Jagerschnitzel which come with two sides (the cucumber 🥒 salad is exceptional.)
Definitely do not forget to get an apple strudel with a scoop of vanilla icecream for dessert 🍨, as well. It is simply the yummiest.
This place is awesome!!! The food is spectacular, the unique and original flavors of German cuisine, such as their beers, always surprise their diners, from something very simple like strips of meat to something more elaborate like pork knuckles. I love it and I will come back. Highly recommended.
First visit, could not be more pleased. Started with a couple of local beers, then got a couple schnitzel entrees. The schnitzels themselves were excellent, and the sides were pretty tasty too. Would definitely return!
Very quirky restaurant. The atmosphere is great the service was excellent. I tried the Jägerschnitzel and I was very impressed the beer selection is great. Definitely recommend this restaurant.
