I always try to sneak away at lunch to enjoy a 5start meal. Luckily I am always back within the hour because the service is quick and the food is amazing. I love the grass fed burger, the chicken biscuit.. what else... ohhh the fired chicken and mac and cheese yummers. I have also been for Sunday brunch... thank goodness I don't have to go back to work after eating such a filling meal on Sundays.. This place never disappoints
I had the pleasure of enjoying both breakfast and dinner here and I have one word…. MMMMMMM! The BLT Benedict was the best I have ever tasted, the thick crispy bacon and tomato jam really took the traditional benedict to a whole new delicious level. For dinner I ordered the Sweet Corn Veloute with crab hushpuppies and heirloom tomatoes – again, like NOTHING my taste buds have ever tasted. It was full of flavor. My only complaint, I wanted more of it. The staff was very attentive. And the vibe was a cross between cool and rustic, not the least bit stuffy, very welcoming. I will most certainly make another stop here when in the area again.
This was my first time to DC and i was so lucky to find Art and Soul. I've never had carrot soup like this before. It was delicious!
I could have had a second bowl, however the salmon with mushrooms and spaetzle was a wonderful way to end my day.
I'll recommend this establishment to everyone I know...

We’ve been here a few times and haven’t been disappointed. First we ordered from the bar- the bartender makes me a variation on a Moscow Mule which we’ve nicknamed the “Lee Special” and it’s my favorite drink! Then we moved on to our wonderful dinner! Our waiter Vernon was so nice and friendly- he made suggestions for us and we were really pleased with his service. My husband and I shared the cornbread appetizer -yummy! Then he had a burger with bacon and a fried egg and I had shrimp& grits- both delicious! Then we had coffee and dessert- a cheesecake and a bread pudding. What a wonderful evening- we’ll be coming back again 😁👍🏼
We dined for breakfast and dinner the Saturday we were in town. Small but freshly fantastic selection for each, I quite enjoyed both meals. I thought I wasn't hungry enough for an entree so got the corn soup with crab hushpuppies and wished there were free refills! Everyone in my party seemed to have a similar experience and really enjoyed (devoured) their food as well. Dessert was superb and our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. Plus the staff humored our rapid water drinking, checking on us often.
We had a group of 6 on Saturday night, 6/4/16. As out-of-towners, we came on the recommendation of some locals, and you guys hit it out of the park! An entire table of North Carolina foodies, we sampled everything from the pork chop special to the ribeye, the cheese board, crab dip, asparagus, Mac & cheese, and cornbread. Everything was perfect, even down to the pickled okra garnish. Our server (Vernon, I think was his name) was knowledgable, charming and efficient. He gave some of the best customer service I've ever had. He even made sweet tea happen for this table of southerners, and it was delicious! Kudos to the kitchen for our expertly prepared meals, and to the FOH for the cleanliness, ambience, and exemplary service. It was a true treat to dine here.
This was my first time at Art and Soul. I loved everything about it! Inventive cuisine, great staff, and lively ambiance. Limited but excellent wine list. This restaurant is definitely on my list of favorites!
Excellent! Great food and great service, I would definitely recommend and come again.
Great atmosphere, service, wine selection and menu! The salmon was terrific!
Food was great! Service was excellent. Waiter was really nice and friendly. We went for the Pooch menu. Leo loved the peanut butter and banana popsicle!!
Great idea! Thank you for being dog friendly!!!
I don't live in DC but have introduced several locals to Art and Soul, they are now dedicated diners there. Everything is exquisite down to the french fries. I revel in introducing people to this restaurant and watching their eyes roll back and groan from happiness about everything from the burger to the chicken thighs or the fried chicken.
This is a very busy restaurant, lots of people there. My and Girlfriend went at night for a date. The fried chicken is super crispy on the outside and seasoned to perfection on the inside, and very juicy. We ended up taking some back to our hotel and I ate this chicken cold, I never eat cold food. The spicy collard greens are fresh and they taste amazing with the jalapeño cornbread. I'm not a huge fan of mashed potatoes but this place is the exception. The price was decent as well this meal for two cost about $60 give or take but it was definitely worth it.
In an event benefiting DC Central Kitchen, a collage of local chefs coalesced in the newly opened Art and Soul on New Jersey Avenue for a bread battle of buttery proportions. Being the resident southerner at DCfüd, a purveyor of carbohydrates and a vapid believer in healthy competition, Biscuit Bash 2016 called to myself and many district dwellers for an array of biscuit-based noshes alongside local brews and craft cocktails courtesy of Art and Soul’s mixologist, Lee Bonds. All participants were allowed to exhibit their inner food critic, voting for the best biscuit rendition of the evening.
Good upscale southern food from a celebrity chef (art Smith). They do a good breakfast. They made the only Red Velvet cake I've ever liked. Ever. I remember having good duck wings there. And fried chicken and fried green tomatoes. They did a great huge pork roll (Porchetta) for an event once. You can't go wrong here. It is near Union Station.

Those who know me well know I love a dinner party. I truly enjoy having a table full of strangers exchanging stories and experiences. Last Saturday, my friend K and I had the opportunity to attend a Saturday Supper at Art and Soul Restaurant. For starters, Art and Soul is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. It has a special place in my heart as it was the place the Dutchman and I dined the night we got engaged. It also has a special place in my heart due to the amazing can baked cornbread served.
Come for the fried chicken. The "Fried Chicken for Two" (essentially a whole fried chicken, so it easily feeds 3 or more if you order other things too) actually lives up to the hype. I'm not so sure the rest of the menu contains much worth bragging about. The food is pretty good, but nothing we ordered blew us away. Also, it's in that unfortunate part of DC where everything feels like a tourist trap, even when it is just a decent restaurant in a nice hotel.
The salads are great, the shrimp and grits were tasty. They have a nice bar section, too. Service was outstanding.
The shrimp & grits were great.
Had room service delivered and was happy with the quality and value of the meal. Ordered the three-course meal, which was a bargain compared to ordering ala carte. Sorbet was the highlight!
Very tasty and creative dinner. Took many recommendations of Roman, our server. Started with pumpkin hoecake and Scoth egg, which was fantastic! Enjoyed well-prepared ribeye and glazed overtones of well-created short ribs. Mixed on the fig dessert. Overall, we enjoyed a very good dinner.
Tasty Food!. I stop by here every time I'm in DC. The service is hit and miss, but I usually go at lunch when it is pretty busy. However, the food is always great. I tried the catfish with black eyed peas for the first time today and it was excellent. The fish had a crispy cornmeal crust with a green tomato salsa on a bed of black eyed peas. The peas were flavored perfectly with salt pork and the green tomato salsa added the perfect hint of freshness to the dish. I'm sure I will be back on my next visit to the District.
The Best Kept Secret in DC. Can you say the best kept secret in DC?!?!?!?! Oh my goodness, who knew this restaurant would be found in a hotel on Capital Hill and the food would be so good. I heard how the fried chicken was so good and normally I don't order chicken when I go out. But let me just say, it was like eating my grandmother's chicken. And the mashed potatoes (which were cold when they first came out, but when sent back and they came out for the second time, OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!) were so good, I wish I had more. Grilled carrots, with mint leaves, who would have thought to mix the two. So I didn't think I would have room for dessert. Well my taste buds and stomach surprised me. The seasonal cobbler (blueberry & raspberry) with a scoop of ice cream was divine. Needless to say I WILL BE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did I mention the ambiance....tres' chic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn't Feel Like a Hotel Restaurant. We were staying at a different hotel in the area, and decided to try Art and Soul for dinner. Entering the restaurant from the street, I would never have known that it was attached to a hotel. The decor is upscale, comfortable casual. The staff were friendly, courteous and attentive to our needs. The food was absolutely delicious, and deceptively filling. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great Restaurant on Capitol Hill. We were staying at the Hyatt on Capitol Hill and looking for somewhere local to grab dinner. We saw Art and Soul the night before on our way to Somoma, and thought it looked like a place worth a try. We walked in the following evening (no reservations) and had a couple of excellent drinks at the bar before being seated. The menu was very approachable - everything looked amazing - and we were not disappointed. Though full, we could not turn away desert. We frequently travel to Chicago and were pleased to find Chef Smith's other restaurant, Table Fifty-Two - which did not disappoint! This is a great place for dinner if you are anywhere near the Capitol.
Delightful Soul Food. Art Smith has clearly missed out on the minimalist deconstruction trend in food today. Instead, Art and Soul focuses on hearty but haute soul food.
The Shrimp and Grits appetizer is simply better than other renditions around the area that serve as full meals. I include Georgia Brown's and The Carlyle in this statement. The grits are extra creamy with a dollop of cheddar. The shrimp themselves are enormous and impaled on a long piece of sugarcane. Amazingly, the shrimp were perfectly cooked, something that is extraordinarily difficult when they are as large as these. On top of it all was a lovely oilve oil and basil aoili and the "chow-chow" which was a warm salad of sorts. An amazing starter.
I ordered the Blackened Scallops for a main course as my wife went for the Salmon. The scallops again came perfectly cooked, not rubbery in the least. 4 of them perched nicely upon a magical concoction of mashed potatoes and blanched collard greens, all covered in a tangy and wonderful red eye gravy. Little pieces of bacon hid throughout the dish as well, provide nice little surprises.
While I'm not a huge fan of salmon, I was a huge fan of the fennel peppercorn sauce that came with it, one of the best sauces I've tasted this year. The salad of fruit and vegetables in a ratatouille form provided a bed for a well cooked piece of fish.
Dessert was decadent, not always in a good way. The bread pudding with blackberry compote was a perfect bite to end with. On the other hand, the caramel brownie bar was terrifying. Made of pure dark chocolate, it was topped with dark chocolate fudge and layered with gooey caramel. Almost like a cruel joke, a delicate scoop of vanilla ice cream was laying next to it. It was far too rich. It should have been half the size with twice the ice cream. After one bite they could have sold me coffee for 40 bucks and I wouldn't have blinked.
Service was iffy in places, but the restaurant was busy and the servers seemed overworked.
Overall though, the food was really quite spectacular.
Great!. This restaurant was absolutely delicious, but the service was not that good. My mother never received her iced tea, and our service wasn't hospitable at all. We also had to ask the manager for our check because our waiter never came back. The excellent food however did make up for the service. I would definitely suggest this restaurant.
The hotel is definitely going for trendy-hip, and the bar is struggling between cool and hotel, but the meal I had wad first rate. I focused on the mussels and the crab three ways. For me, both were winners. The mussels were plump, cooked to the right level, and the mix of plum tomatoes, I think coconut milk, fresh rosemary and thyme blended fir a very flavorful balance. I love mussels, but I would imagine mussel haters would like this dish. The crab threeways was really good. The crab cake was rich on crab, nice spices, smooth so the crab was easy to taste and the spices accompanied. I could eat a bucket of the softshells, rich, creamy, and a perfect coating of deep fried goodness.
Strong drinks nice atmosphere. Did not get around to the food though...
Considering that Art and Soul was a more-or-less random destination for us picked for convenience, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the cocktails and food were, and I’d be happy to come back and give them a try for dinner, or to sit outside on their pleasant patio. It’s definitely one of the gems for the Union Station area.
loved the crispy crunchy texture of the outside of the chicken, while the inside dark meat was tender and juicy. I could taste the subtle heat from the peppers, that really jumped on my tongue. This plate was not only nice to look at, but incredibly flavorful and easy to polish off.

On the ground floor of the swanky Liaison Hotel sits Art and Soul. The restaurant is owned by FSU alumnus, and Hamilton County native Art Smith. From our perch on the 7 th floor the location was perfect and we invited our friends, and recent transplants to DC, Michael and Tanya to join us for dinner. After making us presentable we made the short elevator ride down to the lobby. Art and Soul flows into the bar and entryway of the Liaison and allowed people to move freely between all three areas. Upon giving our name to the friendly hostess we were seated. The restaurant was sleek and modern with touches of Southern shabby sheik. Polished metal, clean lines, and modern lighting were mixed with chalk boards, touille printed drapery, and my favorite element, a wall covered entirely in dry beans. Our waitress appeared with menus and immediately noticed our fidgeting kids. Crayons were produced and she offered to put their meals in right away to give them something to occupy their tim
Our trip to Art and Soul came as the deserved exclamation point to a long, stressful week. Friday evening was to be when Angela would find out her results of the California Bar Exam, and it would've been an understatement to say that she was a little anxi

Arriving early to Art and Soul Restaurant’s (http://www.artandsouldc.com) Pig and Oyster Roast tasting, my evening began at their bar with a generously poured glass of Merlot (only 7 dollars during their happy hour). The interior of Art and Soul was decorated with an aesthetically delectable assortment of taupe and gray with accents of chocolate brown.
This was such a savvy and cozy spot! We were a few minutes short of arriving for breakfast, but the lunch menu did not disappoint. Our server was friendly and quite helpful in assisting with our food selections. The Maryland Crab Deviled Eggs, Smoked Chicken Salad with Chipotle Vinaigrette, and the 8 oz. Sirloin Steak were all beautifully plated and even better tasting! If we could’ve sampled the entire menu, we would’ve; but, we’ll be back for more!
I was walking around DC and I looked up Black Owned Restaurants and this one came up. Not sure if it’s actually black owned but that’s okay cuz the food and service was good. I didn’t realize it was apart of the hotel. Really nice aesthetic on the inside. Very warm and inviting as I was greeted by the hostess. I sat by the bar and the bartender gave me the menu and made suggestions of what I should get. I trusted his judgment and got the Chefs Special which was roughly $42. I got the mimosa, which was not bottomless, got the Buttermilk Chicken and Waffles plus the house made blueberry bread. Everything tasted amazing. The mimosas was a really tall glass so I definitely felt he buzz, bartender out a splash of OJ in it so that was appreciated. Chicken and waffles were seasoned through and through while the waffle was soft and fluffy on the inside with a nice crisp. And the blueberry bread was simply amazing. I strongly recommend the blueberry bread. Definitely a spot to check out in DC.
Very nice restaurant attached to Yotel, we went looking for chicken and waffles and were very happy with our meal. The chicken was very tender, waffle was very flavorful, waitress suggested the spicy maple syrup that was very good. Overall an amazing dining experience. They also had live music that was a very nice touch.
Ordered chicken sandwich which was great, fries were very well seasoned and tasty. We told the waiter we only had 30min and he said no problem, got us food and check in and out in 30min. Outdoor seating was nice. Right when you walk in Art and Soul it did smell heavy of cigarette smoke which I took a point off of atmosphere for.
Such a cool spot and food was delicious! We didn't get brunch but the lunch menu was excellent. Mimosas were perfect and music was fun.
Good food with very artsy interiors. Outdoor seating is nice. Service is very slow. Our food came almost 30 minutes after we ordered. Not many vegetarian lunch options, but they do have few brunch type entrees. Located very close to attractions.
SOOO TASTY!!! There quite a variety of foods - it’s hard to categorize the type of food… but everything we had was SO GOOD! The spring fever drink was AMAAAAZING! The steak was so yummy! The brunch was especially tasty!! That Benedict was AMAZINGGGGG!! Only disappointment was the lack of bougie coffee options at breakfast haha - for how bougie the rest is, I kinda expected some more coffee options, but the food was AMAZING! Literally didn’t have to leave the hotel…the food was so good each time!
We came for brunch with out of town guests. The dining area is picturesque and aesthetic but the music is loud... It was hard having conversations with our group of 5.
Crab Deviled Eggs-I found it tasty, our group found it bland with just heat.
Mac and cheese side-creamy and was ok.
Chicken Sandwich-messy but good.
Cinnamon roll- was ok
Overall good service with ok food for brunch.
we were staying at the yotel next door and came here a couple of times for happy hour and a free 'high tea' that we won from the trivia night. happy hour beers and snacks were worth the price, although I don't think I would've normally paid $65 for the afternoon tea, as delicious and aesthetically pleasing as it was (for a special occasion perhaps)!
The brunch menu is so good! Ended up getting a chicken sandwich and it was so crispy! Loved the season fries too.
The location isn’t the best or most convenient unless you’re in a hotel right nearby.
We told our server we had to be out in 30 mins and our food was delivered quickly and he brought our check quickly too!
It was the highest rated place opened at 10 am.
It is located near hotel and were almost full.
We took egg burrito and ham/cheese sandwich. Potatoes were not well cooked but overall it was okey.
Wonderful Sunday brunch experience. We were seated almost immediately. Right away you notice the patio area, welcoming ambiance, great lightning, and a beautiful decor.
Our server, Victor, was amazing and spot-on with his recommendations. We decided to go with the Chef 3 Course Brunch meal, generous amount of food for the price.
I wanted to highlight the Chicken and Waffles, great balance between sweet and spicy. The Strawberry Cinnamon Roll was delicious, not too overwhelming. Our meal also included the Steak and Egg entire, can't go wrong and everything was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
Definitely a great place for brunch, good food, great service, and a laid back atmosphere.
Easily one of my favorite places. Took my dog to the patio, and had amazing food, great service, and good vibes. Loved it so much went 2 nights in a row. It’s a must try spot! Angel took care of us and he is the best service staff ever.
My dog loved the hungry dog steak dish best. And all the human food is chefs kiss. <3
This place is nice on the inside and out. Nice bar and top notch service. We had brunch here. Food was clutch. I had the steak and my wife the salmon. Definitely recommend this place for brunch!
What a great place. The food is phenomenal. Dont let a limited brunch menu fool you. Go for the app, brunch and desert option for 42$ a person. Extremely fresh and delectable quality. Their outdoor space was nice to have brunch in on a beautiful day! Very great staff
The food here was extremely good, I had pancakes and I very much enjoyed them! My only issue was that we ordered coffee, only to be told that the coffee machine wasn’t actually working. Overall this place is nice.
Atmosphere and service was welcoming and enjoyable. The food choices were limited on the lunch menu, the food was good.
Would recommend if you have a spare 45 minutes to grab some grub.
Stopped and had brunch here. The restaurant was big and fancy clean looking on the inside…but they have a big outside area that we had our eyes on.
Food was great! We sampled a number of their brunch options that were all great…with us loving the biscuits and gravy the best!
Their chocolate raspberry tart was pretty darn good too! I would order it again.
The only thing that sucked was the staff, managers and a table of 15 were all fighting over how many tables they could occupy. At first it was… a bit … entertaining… but it kept dragging on and it was clear the situation was bumming everyone out… so we just left.
Would recommend! Would try the place again :)
