Carl is a smart man. Been on Rhode Island Ave for over 40 years. He’s a smart well educated man. Undergrad and graduate degrees all before 1950. A wealth of history in this man and establishment.
Food is consistent and prices are more than fair. He mentioned he has a birthday coming soon….77th!

Service was awesome. Very friendly staff who made a sub with lots of meat. I'm very glad someone recommended this place to me. Remember to bring cash, they don't take any cards!
You will not find a nicer owner to go with such a nice product in DC. Carl is a class act bubbling over with positive words at every visit. The subs (cold only) are great and reasonably priced while providing hefty, tasty portions. Make sure to bring cash. You will not be disappointed.
So so glad we stopped here. Great staff/owners and the food was great. We got #1 and #9 - we really enjoyed both! As others mentioned, it is cash only so be prepared for that.
You can not beat carls! The price quality and quantity are prehistoric. And the customer service predates the modern era. I will definitely be back in for a bite. If your in the neighborhood stop by. You won’t be disappointed
I have been going Carls for atleast 20 years. Always greeted with love and respect. I usually get the #9 the Turkey with Provolone. Best subs in the city. I travel around the country for work can’t find any other sub shop touching Subbs by Carl.

Great local sub spot. Classic disheveled inside with super nice staff. Bread is soft and delicious and ingredients are fresh. One star subtracted for lack of cleanliness.
