Love the food here. A bit pricey, but well worth it. Very fun atmosphere as well. Very busy place so be prepared to wait for awhile. You won't be disappointed.
Always have a great experience here! This place is a very popular spot in Wichita, Kansas so be prepared to wait a bit to be seated - trust me, it's worth it! Sumo's is a Japanese steakhouse with tabletop hibachi cooking stations. Customers sit around the cooktops and actually get to watch your meal cook and transform in front of your eyes! Sumo's also has a bar that serves unique, yummy cocktails - and they have a section where you can order sushi. This place rocks!
I don't understand all these negative reviews! I eat sushi here with my family once a month and we always have a wonderful experience. I love Sumo's sushi because it isn't so large I have to unhinge my jaw to eat it, unlike the other popular sushi restaurant in town. Doesn't hurt that they have the best garlic fried rice in the country, either. I crave it all the time!
GARLIC FRIED RICE! Enough Said. The show is always a blast, the chef's do a great job. Every meat or seafood you can order for the grill is amazing, but if you dont order the Garlic Fried Rice you are missing out! I order a double order just so I can snack on it while watching the show and then still have some left for the entree!
Pretty good. My friends rave over this place, but we think it's just pretty good. Food is a little better than average, but the service and 'show' from the chef's is very good. We typically have a very good time. Drinks are usually very good and adequately priced. Go check it out and have fun.
A Couple of thoughts. I was looking through the reviews, and wanted to share my take on a restaurant I like alot:
First) There are actually essentially three separate customer experiences going on--a bar (where you can get drinks and sushi), a sushi restaurant (which almost never has a wait, and where you can get sushi, appetizers, drinks, and more), and a grill restaurant (which often has a wait). Me, I love sushi, so I never really have any issues.
But if you want the Hibachi grill, then:
Second) The restaurant does not do reservations. They will take call-aheads which guarantees they don't turn you away at the door (they are usually so busy on the weekends anyone without a call ahead is likely to be turned away) but this does not guarantee a time. Usually the weekdays (M-Th) seem calmer.
If you come early on the weekends (within half an hour of opening) you seem to have a good shot of being seated right away, but once the tables fill up you cannot be seated until a table chooses to get up. Even if the chef's are moving at full speed, get to the table, cook the food, do the show, and deserts are pushed, this means that 1 table will take about 30 minutes to finish. In reality, people often sit for another half hour or more after the chef leaves, just chatting and enjoying the heaps of goodness on their plates. Yes I am sorry, I have been one of these people.
It would be nice if they had a way to speed this up, but I don't know the solution. Maybe they should have ejectable seats? What I do know is the few times I have eaten at the grill, it has been AMAZING. I also know that I have run into crazy wait times at many other high end restaurants in Wichita during the weekends, so I am not sure this problem is unique to here.
So for those worried about the wait, sorry, but maybe this info helps you negotiate it better? For those worried about the service, I haven't seen it myself, but that sucks, and you have every right to be upset. For those worried about the food...oh, wait, no one is complaining about the food. Huh.
I have ate here twice. Great food, no wait. Both times were on business, so I visited during the week. I had sushi both times. It was fresh and fast. It has a modern hip feel as they play upbeat and modern music. I always enjoy it, and will keep coming back.
A fun way to experience Japanese cuisine. Not necessarily authentic, but very good food, prepared and presented in an entertaining way.
Service leaves a lot to be desired. I went to Sumo with a group of 14. We were treated poorly during out arrival. The hostess even rolled her eyes at me. The bartender was not friendly. The chefs at the grill saved this place. The food was good, but I am not sure I would return because we were treated as a inconvienence, and to top it off this was not the first time. The first time was for my birthday, and there was a group of 6, and again the bartenders and hostess were not service oriented in the Least! Food good, but service is "barely acceptable" at the best possible rating.
Nothing to complain about. People are being so outta control on here, seriously the only bad things people have been able to come up with is:
"I had to wait more than 10 seconds at a popular restaurant"
"There are people on this planet other than me!"
"It took a while for my party of a million to be seated"
"It's loud" (Really?)
Notice how no one has complained about the food here? That because the food here is amazing. Sure Sumos doesn't do reservations, but when the food is that good it's well worth the wait. Hence the reason why Sumos is always packed and hence the reason why you may have to wait more than 5 seconds (Heaven forbid).
Sumo is Solid. The sushi side and grill side are equally awesome. Try a Green Dragon from the bar. Shrimp and lobster are pretty fresh.
Filet & Chicken Goodness. This place was awesome. The atmosphere was fun and relaxing. We ate at one of the grills and not only was our grill master interesting, but so were the other tables as well. I have been to several grills such as this one and Sumo was probably the top. The food was so good and the fried rice was out of this world. Please visit this establishment!!
Everything!. This restaraunt is my absolute favorite!! I go there at least once a month, if not more. The sesame chicken is the best! And I could eat the garlic fried rice as a meal. AMAZING!
Fabulous Sushi!!!. If you are looking for delicious Sushi in Wichita, Sumo is the place!!! I have never had a bad experience.
Well sorry about some peoples luck! Every time I have came to sumo's the food has been very good and the service has as well! Can't beat the garlic fried rice either... judge for your self
Fun place. This is the place where i love to go celebrate my birthday w my friends!!
Best sushi in town. the grill is great. I always share with my husband and still get beyond full. it is very crowded and slow seat you, but worth the wait. always get the garlic fried rice. the half price sushi on the weekends is a very limited menu.
Good food. I like to take advantage of their half off sushi nights!
Good food. However, appear to be cutting back on portion sizes. Some chefs more entertaining and pleasant than others.
Cheap late-night sushi. My favorite time of night to go to Sumo is after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant recently started half-price sushi on weekends from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and it's a fabulous deal.
My boyfriend and I often go after work and you can feed two people with drinks for under $15.
I love the fried rice and the sushi. The Hibachi grill is good, although it seems pretty average compared to Kobe's and other Hibachi grills that I have been to.
The service is usually a bit slow because the restaurant is almost always packed. If you plan to bring a large party, even with a reservation you will almost always have a wait. Plan to wait at least an hour with a large party and half an hour if it's only a few of you.
Servers are hit or miss. Many have an attitude, but some are friendly and personable. The Hibachi chefs are always incredibly friendly.
Food is reasonably priced and fresh, and the atmosphere is trendy. Trendy also equals loud, though, because people are seated in large groups far apart from each other on the Hibachi tables and the entire restaurant is open air.
It's more intimate at night during late-night sushi, if you can hear one another over the DJ. I prefer to sit in the sushi bar area anyway.
If you are looking for good food for a reasonable price, Sumo is a decent bet.
Nice for a change. Kids always like the japanese style grill. This one is par for the course. The sushi is general good as well
It is hard to get into and you may have to wait once there, but the food is good. The chefs don't tell jokes or do tricks like they used to. It is more rushed. The atmosphere is nice and their fried rice is awsome. It's one of the better asain resturants in Wichita
Great fried rice. A little pricey and the food isn't spectacular but the rice keeps me coming back.
Wichita's top hibachi/sushi joint. Whether you're wanting something off the grill or sushi, Sumo delivers in high caliber fashion. The flavors are amazing. Portion sizes are reasonable. Value for the dollar may be a bit high if dining at the grill. Regardless, a must visit restaurant in Wichita...
The best in town hand down
The fried rice is amazing! Everything is well prepared cause it's cooked right in front of you.
This is my favorite spot to get sushi and to do Hibachi grill! The ambience is also very nice! Love it!
Awesome. I love going to Sumo for their Sushi!!!! Such a fun atmosphere too.
Great sushi. Very good sushi, possibly best in wichita
Good atmosphere and good sushi/sashimi.
Excellent food. Generous helpings. A little pricey but it should be expected.
I got the #17 Lad Nha Thai House with rice instead of noodles and no tail on the shrimp. The owners are so fabulous and accommodating. Seriously. All you have to do is ask and, as long as it’s doable and no illegal, they will oblige. I was told that I was only one of two people who sub rice for noodle in #17. The other person is a Hispanic guy who doesn’t like noodles.
The experience of going to a hibachi grill was definitely there. The ambiance was fine. Our chef was fun and energetic and the performance was exactly as expected. We went during half price martinis which was a pleasant surprise.
The food was fine. It was all cooked the same regardless of the cooking preference of the steak. Worth going at least once to see for yourself.
It was an awesome atmosphere the man doing the grill was amazing fun full of energy it was my son's birthday dinner because birthday is tomorrow we had 8 people one vegan and they loved it
