“Started by Joe Allen Hill in 1951, Hill’s Lexington Barbecue in Winston-Salem is the first to have the name “Lexington Barbecue,” thus their claim to being the “original” Lexington barbecue. At the time they opened there were a few small side street barbecues in Lexington operated by Stamey, Beck and Swicegood. But none called their barbecue place “Lexington Barbecue.”
May 4, 2019 Saturday lunch. Sister, wife, son, daughter-in-law for lunch. True Lexington BBQ - cooked with wood (smoke flavor is great). BBQ can be ordered as chopped, sliced, blocked, or pulled I ordered chopped as this is the historic correct serviced style - or sliced is ok. The barbeque (I had a tray of chopped) was really great - correct ratio of lean to some small included fat. The barbeque (red) slaw was 'out of this world' - I could have really enjoyed eating much more of this than would have been good for me. Hush puppies were cornbread - but paired very well with the meat and slaw. The banana pudding was exceptional - all five of us not only cleaned our bowls but also scrapped the bowls for the last possible taste. Highly recommend the banana pudding.
The plate looked great – finely chopped pork, red slaw, and crinkle fries. We might as well have been in heaven. Digging in, I was treated to that nice smokey Lexington flavor I love (and miss in Tennessee). The pork was solid, though I think the ratio of ketchup to vinegar in the dip favored the ketchup a little too much. The pork was served with dip, and no extra was needed.
Delicious Barbecue in Winston Salem. Just had lunch here again the other day. The BBQ flavor is excellent. I prefer this style of barbecue over others in the local area. The restaurant is clean and well managed. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are very reasonable. I highly recommend Hill's Lexington Barbecue in Winston Salem. We shall return!
Not the best BBQ I've ever had, but good. The chopped sandwich was fairly small but it was relatively inexpensive so it was ok. Overall, it was good.
Good BBQ, Great Fried Chicken. The BBQ here is not the absolute best Lexington style chopped pork, not even in Winston, but it is solid, and they do a number of other things very well, and have for years, and the service is always good, even when it is crowded, as it was today at lunch.
The pork comes out of the kitchen in a medium chop, and sauced too much for my taste - so I always ask them not to sauce my order. The result is a much drier product that I can sauce to my taste. I have found this to be true much more often with Lexington and Western style sauces than with Eastern because of the inherent sweetness in those sauces which will mask the pork taste.
Now the pork here lacks smokiness, and this is becoming more and more commonplace as cooking over wood coals is increasingly abandoned for electric or gas cookers. But properly sauced, this is not a bad version, and makes a more than decent sandwich.
The hush puppies are good, they offer both versions of slaw here, and I find both nice. The fries are the crinkled kind, but here they get them crisp, and salt them properly right out of the oil.
They make an excellent Southern style chili dog, loaded with a meaty, tasty chili on a nice quality wiener. I would come here strictly for the hot dog. Their fried chicken is also outstanding - lightly coated, fried crisp, and perfectly seasoned with a nice amount of salt and pepper
They offer some good sides as well. The Fried Squash is always fixed fresh, and fried perfectly. The Fried Okra is from frozen, but is a nice item, fried well, and both of these are properly seasoned. And their home made cobblers are worth the calories
Now this is not the cheapest place in town, but you get good value, excellent food, and nice, friendly service. It is a family place, so there will be some noise from the young crowd, especially on the weekends
