No restaurant like this. These people are always finding ways to please customers. The go ou of there way to make what the customer wants even when it's not on the menu. Very hard working people. God bless.
Late Lunch. With a group of friends, I had a late lunch at Armando's in the middle of the week. Things were very quiet! When we arrived, we were immediately served chips, refried beans and salsa. The salsa was very mild and needed a bit of kick. In fact, that is what I will say about the restaurant overall. The food was okay, and some dishes seemed a little different than the standard Mexican-restaurant fare. But there isn't any reason to drive out to Brownsville just to eat here. Food is fine but not memorable. Still may be the best restaurant in town.
Fresh & Flavorful. First impression was good. The place is clean and not booming with too much chaotic noise or music. Lights are dim, which lends a nice ambience, but at the same time it can seem too dark.
Chips, salsa and warm refried beans were immediately served. Good chips and bean dip, but the salsa was super watery. Our water cups stayed full, and they apparently serve ice only upon request, which is nice because I usually prefer my water at cool- to room-temp. The water tastes really good, by the way.
There is only one bathroom, and I think I had to wait for five users before I could have a chance at it. The bathroom is small. Bring your own toilet seat cover, or make it with TP. Also, don't be immediately afraid of the mysterious liquid on the seat. The paper towels are above the toilet, so freshly washed hands are likely to drip before a towel is accessed.
I ordered a chicken enchilada (my usual) with rice and beans. My mom got fish tacos and tamale, my step-dad got carne asada. The dishes looked really good and, for the most part, tasted really good as well. My mom and I didn't care for the fish taco, though. It was just....different. It comes in some sort of tomato-based sauce or salsa and lacked any lime or other sharp flavor. The fish itself was good, though.
I usually don't finish rice and beans because they get boring in my mouth after a while, but in this case I cleaned the whole plate. Everything seemed fresh and moist.
My first impression about the staff was not exactly stellar. I mean, they were nice and did their job well, but two of them just made me feel very mildly uncomfortable as a guest there, yet the third person was more personable and comfortable to talk to.
