I was thrilled to learn this place had extended their schedule this year due to the pandemic. (They're usually closed for the season when we travel to Colorado each Fall.) The volunteers were so helpful and full of information when I paid the $12 to enter the park. You can choose to hike from the bottom or drive to the top (via a gravel, unpaved road) for a shorter hike. Either way, you'll encounter wonderful views along the way. The weather was perfect on the day of my hike. It was warm, windy and dry at the top, and I was happy I had brought extra water. The final portion of the ascent to the ruins is narrow, so be sure to give uphill hikers the right of way. I was lucky to encounter a volunteer at the top who shared the history and interesting details of the area. There's a sign welcoming you to the top indicating the elevation (7620 ft) and creating a perfect photo op for reaching it.

When you're on your way in Western Colorado on highway 160, be sure to turn off to see chimney Rock monument national park. It costs $12 per adults and much less for children. The views are breath taking! Truly a must do in the USA! This have been has been one of our greatest excursions during our later life travels. The entire staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Good luck with the new build and hope to see you again in the future!

A $12 donation is worth it for the views getting the top. Happy to donate to the cause. Fairly easy hike on an unpaved trail to the top that is mostly gravel and dirt with a few steep spots. Lower trail is paved and wheelchair accessible. Plan on spending 2 hours and bring water. Staff was informative and friendly. The gravel road in is fairly well maintained but the parking lot is small and can't accommodate oversized vehicles at the top. A cool step back in time. You can see New Mexico from here.
