I usually don’t have too much time to keep up with restaurant reviews since I’m usually writing my own but of course I did notice the N&O Restaurant of the Year for 2014, Gocciolina. Given their location, it would not be easy for me to visit the place and I’d run into them every now and then at local food events to sample their cuisine. But thankfully, I finally found an excuse to visit this cozy Italian ristorante and it was totally worth the drive!

Until I visited Gocciolina, I hadn't quite found an Italian restaurant in Durham that followed the principle of authenticity; a sort of cooking in which the chefs try to replicate the flavours one tastes in the home country. In other words, I was after real flavours - not just dishes served with an overly generous serving of grated cheese and marinara sauce. I guess I've already given myself away with the final verdict, but I urge you to read on to see how it came about.

Excellent. In an odd location up in North Durham, but we live there so we like it here! Reservations are apparently hard to get, but it's not difficult to get a seat even on a Saturday night if you're willing to wait for a bit. Don't be fooled by it's location in a strip mall, it's some of the best of its kind in Durham. Service was great and food was delicious. We tried antipasti, which we definitely recommend doing, as well as the entrees and dessert. Their specials are good and seasonal. They get their fish the day of from the Outer Banks and seemed to suggest that's the method for all the cuisine (ie local). You can get a large multi course meal for two for under $50 and it's excellent. Disagree with the other reviewer who complained about portions. They were very well portioned. Highly recommend.
