In the pursuit of completing our passports, my wife and I stopped in on the way home from a road trip up north for lunch, and to check out the property.
Unfortunately Kalama, unlike cities further north, was still saddled with the burden of outdoor dining only at the time of our visit, but our table was right under a propane lamp and comfortably warm, despite the temperature being less than 40 degrees. Blankets were provided at the host's kiosk; my wife took one, just in case. Wasn't really needed.
The lobster sandwich (its actual name eludes me, and I can't find it in the menus online, but it was on the menus handed to us) was pretty solid; my wife loved it, and the sample bite I had was pretty tasty, but I wasn't particularly hungry. We subbed out her fries for the Good Honest Soup of the day (a beef stew/chili), which was just enough, hearty, meaty, savory. Really good! I accompanied it with a Fall Furnace, which is like a modified Hot Toddy, and coupled with the propane lamp above me, I was comfortably warm and content!
The Pear Sidecar, which we've had at other McMenamins location, held its own as one of her favorites, although there was an odd, very faint coppery taste to it this time (I concurred with her assessment), which I'm going to attribute to something in the dish-cleaning process. Wasn't enough to be off-putting, but it was there.
River views from the back patio of the pub are picturesque, more so than I thought the Columbia River could be, and particularly at sunset. Good food, great ambiance, and the best company (my wife; your mileage may vary, depending on whom you bring along!) made for a wonderful, relaxing stop on our road trip home! Can't wait to come back and stay overnight!
Decided to take a drive and find a place that would let us "dine in". The outdoor seating area was open. They had multiple fire pits lit, heaters on, seating right by the river. It was so awesome to see the ships passing in the night, sitting around a fire pit, just enjoying being out of the house. Food was great. Highly recommend the elk burger, and the tuna melt, and the chicken pizza πππ it was all great! Service was great. Definitely going back. It was worth the 1 hr drive.
This spot is worth visiting. They have big portions for convenient prices. Regularly clean and with excellent atmosphere. Will come back again.
