Umai!!!!! Get your butts in there.. Btw- Umai = delicious.
I go there for lunch almost once a week and all I have to say is that I love this place! You walk in and are greeted by sweet hostesses and friendly chefs. Dai and Dee are the chefs usually behind the counter and are super nice.
Now to the nitty gritty, the food. The sushi is tasty, fresh, and in great portions. No skimping on the fish my friends. My brother took me to Kona Grill last week, what a waste of money. All rice and no fish, plus the two goons behind the counter were just flirting with the waitresses. None of that going on at Sakana, they are always asking how the food is and what else do yuou need. They have a fantastic sashimi plate at lunch for $10, which I almost don't finish after the complementary soup and salad.
I took a co-worker there last week who is from Japan and talks about how the sushi at places here are not authentic. She was impressed not only by the food, but really impressed because the hostesses and sushi chef also speak Japanese!
Go there, enjoy yourself and when you leave tell them, Oh-kini! They will like that ;)
Delectable Delights. Sakana is tucked into a proportioned off building suite next to a grocery store and a fast food joint. Parking was a breeze as it's private and sufficient. As we entered the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess and the sushi chefs. The hostess was quick to point out the elaborate display of daily specials and appetizers that are placed on the opposite side of the hostess station. They are plated to perfection and each menu item looks more appetizing than the next. Along with the food, they have a few bottles of cold saki on display to contemplate.
The restaurant is on the smaller side, which I feel adds to the quaint, warm feel that a sushi restaurant should lend. There's no shortage of traditional Japanese décor; the customary, esteemed Good Fortune Cat sat atop the sushi bar.
Upon being seated, the waitress was by our table momentarily to take our drink order. We ordered a Kirin Light saki bomber and from a choice of six appetizers, we ordered the seaweed salad for an additional 50 cents. Another waitress asked our table if we'd like some complimentary noodles; we indulged. The saki bombers were delivered to our table with hot house saki and frosted beer glasses. The seaweed salad was crisp with a pop; definitely fresh. The thin noodles were served cold with a slightly sweet broth. It was a nice compliment to the seaweed salad.
We ordered a Soft Shell Crab Roll, which is a regular menu item. The crab was considerably larger than I've been served at other sushi restaurants, along with the overall larger size of the roll. It was topped with a generous amount of smelt eggs; a sushi lovers delight.
Off the daily special list, we ordered the Candy Cane Roll. It had spicy crab and avocado, wrapped the traditional way with seaweed and rice, topped with generous cuts of maguro tuna and white tuna toro (also known as escolar; a type of mackeral). It's drizzled with wasabi mayo and ponzu sauce and topped with a type of relish. The artwork was complete with Sriracha, hot chili sauce, that was artfully swirled about the edge of the plate. Might I say, "deeeeelish!" If you like maguro tuna, this is the roll for you.
We also tried the house smoked salmon and maguro tuna nigiri and the seared tuna sashimi. Taste, texture and serving size were all above par. The house smoked salmon is prepared in-house, so it's a unique gratification. The rice was steamed to sticky perfection, as the rice didn't lose its cohesion and break apart.
The waitress, without hovering, was efficient as we never had an empty cup that needed filled or a dirty dish that needed to be cleared. The overall positive experience left us satisfied and amped for our next visit.
Have gone to the one in Tempe a few times. Excellent sushi at a great price. Highly recommended!
