Were in town for the day and had just been to Whole Foods, but after reading about this place we had to make a special trip to give them a try. The location is not the best, but that never deters me or my wife (at least if we are together), and it often adds to the experience for us. We opened the door and did not look back.
Inside is simple tables and chairs, and you seat yourself where ever you please. The whole right side of the store is a butcher shop and we were listening to meat getting butchered as we sat and waited for our food, and laughed about just how fresh our meat was going to be. We were the only caucasians in the restaurant but for one lady eating alone at another table, everyone else was hispanic, and I say that only to point out that if an ethnic restaurant is full of the foreign nationals its food represents, it usually is the real deal, and it was!!!!
Let me say to you that this Mexican food is unbelievable! Like walking across broken glass that is 1000 degrees, barefoot, just for one more bite good. My wife said that her shrimp tacos were hands down the very best she has ever eaten. She really liked the barbacoa taco she had a well. I had lengua, chicharron, and carnita tacos and they were fabulous, and came in double corn tortillas, with cucumber and radish on the side. Do not over look the sauces that are on the table. They add so much to the tacos, and you have this flavor explosion happening in your mouth, and for me the best way to eat them was to put both the green and the red sauce on at the same time. The flavor is intense, but he heat is just moderate. I did also order a steak tostada, but was not really able to eat it, I was too full and we had to head out for an appointment and could not let my stomach rest to make it fit in. It was covered in fresh veggies, cheese and creama (like sour cream, but milder).
My wife is still talking about her shrimp tacos and wanting to plan another trip back to try more things. I would put this place up there with El Asador, Taco Mex and Taqueria Olgy's, and it might beat one/some of them. You have to look this place up when you are in Mobile.
Not some of the best tacos I've had...THE best tacos I've ever had! All served on corn tortillas. So many options-tongue, liver, intensities, chicken, chorizo, barbacoa, asada, etc. Wuick service (avoid noonish time if you're super hungry, that's when it gets the busiest). Served traditionally (with cilantro, onions and lime), not like every other "Mexican" restaurant. No chips and salsa served, because that's actually not a real thing in Mexico. And neither is queso, for the record. Overall, number one choice for tacos for me right now! They serve traditional drinks too, like horchata and jamaica and tamarindo juices, not to mention Jarritos and Coca Cola out of the glass bottle (half a liter!). Go here if you're wanting delicious, authentic Mexican food-you won't be disappointed!
Tacos were awesome! Very authentic and made fresh! Only $1.50 per taco.
This is the most authentic place I've been to in mobile. The staff is very nice and the prices are great.
Had the chicken tacOs and a side of guacamole. Loved every bite! Not your typical restaurant. Not very knowledgeable about authentic restaurants but it was diner style atmOsphere but also meats on display that you could purchase from the refrigerated glass display cases. Service was good. I do smell like a Mexican Restaurant now but I enjoyed the experience!
