Definitely your classic Portland dive bar. The atmosphere is great. Clean restrooms. Good service and a pretty decent breakfast. There is some seating out front for those that like to people watch! Definitely recommend.
I ran into Hamad and was very pleased since he has been out of town for a long time and his bar staff has largely done a good job supporting any needs that should go to him. The staff here historically has always upstanding. Gunner was the single most talented and capable and human rights advocate person to ever grace this place! People don’t get rowdy. It’s a chill spot. Neighborhood AF. Breakfast is banging and I literally get the blue cheese steak to go more than once a week sometimes it’s so good. Breakfast has great vibes to start your day and it’s never rowdy. You can catch people chilling and having meetings throughout the day. I enjoy the bench style outdoor seating booths that are kind of cozy and intimate. This is THE spot for downtown St John’s historically so I will be back hoping for great vibes.
Most of the bar staff know the neighborhood I well enough but I do have a little problem with the enabling of the rumor mill around here. I personally get villianized by a regular patron who approached me romantically— we had no prior history than him knowing my late ex and that I planned to move back here. Rumor mill has it wrong. Not changing spots for dirty looks. Food and company are too good!
[Been a minute since my review. The food is still delicious and top notch bar food. Super great, helpful, always compassionate service. But they're savvy, so don't try to scam them unless you need to end in custody.]
Really great dive bar, maybe the best. Good food, good people, I like, really.
I came here, originally, because the bartender at another bar told me he really could make me a late night burger, but that he'd give me a tip, and I should rather go to Slim's and get one there. Really, sent me elsewhere, The Overeasy/Four Points place said to go to Slim's (and that's a good breakfast/brunch bar, for sure, not upscale, but very solid). And, hey -- they were right!
Old school food-counter bar, here, actually very, very old, by local standards. And, fyi, they were building the cook up while I was there -- didn't catch his name. When I mentioned how good the burger was last weekend they made sure to point out the compliment to him. I don't think he realizes how good his food is. Sounded like he was wanting to move on, empty-hearted. Kinda shy guy, he was, seemed like, into his work.
Twice dipped fries, you can tell. The burger is really good, so I bet he adjusts his ground meat. It's a dive bar and he's making burgers as good as you'll find anywhere, cheap. It reminds me of the old Skyline burgers before they got trendy. I came back to make sure I wasn't just drunk last week, but it's true. I mean, get 'em while they last, right? As soon as he finds out what he's worth, it may not last. Never does. But hey, check it out while you can.
Top marks for pub grill, maybe bonus points. Good beer for a dive, too, but don't take me for an indication of what's hip. Good people, that's what I can tell.
