Boathouse Sushi Rohnert Park

I've only recently - last few years - become a sushi convert and had the good fortune of starting that conversion at Boathouse Sushi. I'm sad to say I spent almost 40 years not knowing how great sushi was and had that default position that raw fish must be nasty. Oh well at least I'm raising my children properly and my oldest loves sushi. Now of course I've had the opportunity to try sushi at several different sushi restaurants all across California and, thanks to Boathouse, I had this naive idea that all sushi tasted as good as Boathouse's. Suffice it to say that's not so. Boathouse is consistently excellent sushi. The sauces taste good, the combinations are excellent, and, perhaps most importantly, the rice is prepared properly. I went to a sushi restaurant in San Diego not long ago and was very disappointed in both the flavor of the sushi and the preparation of the rice. Hard, gritty rice is NOT what you want with sushi. Boathouse gets both right, every time I go - and I usually go about once a month for my "date nights" with the wife. I have only one minor thing to say about Boathouse in the negative: I was VERY disappointed that they eliminated the 2-hour "happy hour" on Friday nights. $4 tapas sushi was really an excellent deal and made it affordable for us to eat out more frequently. Now, unfortunately, we only make it to Boathouse once or twice a month if we're lucky. There's a pretty comparable sushi place in Petaluma that has unlimited sushi for $25 but of course that's not the same kind of deal as $4 a roll of excellent sushi and when I buy "unlimited" sushi I have a bad habit of gorging myself on it. That said, I guess Boathouse would rather have 40-50 of my dollars once-twice a month at a higher profit margin vs. 30-40 2-3x a month at a lower profit margin. Make sense I suppose though overall I know we've gone much, much less since they've eliminated the tapas menu. No more rushing home on Friday nights to get there for happy hour, that's for sure. Regardless, the sushi is certainly one of the best in the area and definitely the best I've had so far in Rohnert Park. You won't be disappointed.
