At the suggestion of a friend, who knew I was taking a road trip to Monterey, this was a good place to pop in for a nosh on the way and boy, she was not kidding ! I have driven by here a 100 times and never stopped and now I will always make it a point to stop.
My friend and I popped in about 1:00 PM for a bite and chose the B,L,T + Avocado and fries. (Menu is quite extensive and very reasonably priced) Serving was plentiful enough to split, which we did, though it was so good I kind of wanted it keep it all to myself. But this along with a cold beverage fit the gullet just right. Our server Curtis, was so much fun and knew his "cold beverages", we thoroughly enjoyed spending an hour here before hitting the road again.
On our way back from Monterey, we thought, I wonder if Curtis is working tonight, so let's pop in again and get a nosh before finishing the drive back to San Francisco. Bingo, Curtis was there and even remembered us. We had a good giggle about our trip (it was a surprise to my friend for his Birthday) and this time we had the fried Calamari, which again was plentiful and so fresh and had both rings and legs (that's what I call them). Not a bit of grease on the plate and certainly nothing left when we were done.
The entire staff was upbeat, fun and well informed about their food options and were even honest about "what they did not recommend", which I completely appreciated.
They have outside seating, which is very inviting on a nice day with views of the Ocean.
Pastries look "to die for", but both times we were too full to indulge, next time ! Next time you are in the area and wondering if you "should or shouldn't stop" ~ STOP!!!!
Cool roadside stop on our California roadtrip. Delicious tuna melt and reuben sandwiches. Friendly staff and fast service. Definitely recommend a meal stop here 5 *****
We LOVE this place and stop in every time we drive up Hwy 1. Great menu with some unique offerings - if it's a weekend breakfast, try the challah french toast with berries - yummy! Plus great coffee, espresso and tea selections and super friendly staff. Kind of a laid back vibe, so don't expect service immediately, but it will defintely be with a smile and some nice words. And don't leave without trying something from the bakery, or better yet, bringing something home with you! Just tried the sourdough artichoke loaf - delish! Plus croissants, pies, cheesecake, cookies, etc
A perfect place to meet your friends. Casual environment, great food for a reasonable price, and music in addition. A North Coast Treasure.
Whale City is amazing! Great food, great service, great atmosphere. This is always our first stop heading up the coast. You can sit down for a meal or grab something from the bakery, either way you won’t be disappointed.
2nd time here in 4 years. Always a great selection of food (breakfast to lunch). Fried artichoke is a must. SERVICE was excellent too!!
And look across the way for the whales spouting - yes you can eat and watch mists from the whale spouts. Indoor and outdoor seating.
We had the Fish and Chips, Chirozo Scramble, Crab Cakes Benedict, Chicken Pesto Sandwich, and Fried Artichoke Appetizer. All the pictures are more than half way eaten - good portions. Kid friendly too.
We got pastries for the next morning. They look amazing.
Definitely one of my favorite crab cakes benedict place because I can taste the real crab used in the cake. I love my eggs perfectly runny. The clam chowder was great for a cold chilly weather and they give you a lot for a bowl. We also got a kids meal which we were surprised of how big they give you.
Even though I only stopped in for morning coffee on my way to a nearby hike, I thought I’d add my thoughts about Whale City Bakery by posting a mini-review.
After more than 30 years, this little cafe/restaurant/bakery in the tiny town of Davenport (pop. 400) has become a magnet for locals as well as tourists driving along Highway 1. In fact, while waiting for a fresh pot of coffee to be brewed, I talked to a family of five from Denmark who were headed from San Francisco to Monterey. They said that their guidebook recommended this spot for “a good big American breakfast”. There was also a very chatty local couple of regulars who were picking up some breakfast burritos to eat on the beach across the street. Not a bad idea.
There’s plenty of indoor seating, a small sunny dining area in front, and some tables in the shade in the back. You can see the ocean in the distance. The regulars said it’s a terrific spot to watch the sunset.
The menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are huge and I’m told that the portions are too. Prices seem reasonable. Maybe next time, I’ll grab one of their house-made pastries to go with my coffee (which was excellent, by the way).
I’m only leaving. 4 star because I absolutely love the food here. I will say the customer service was not the best. I was taking my time looking through the menu because I have a very limited diet and the server came backs about 3 times asking if we were ready and the last time he came he felt the need to say “you need to hurry up the kitchen is gonna close”. Funny enough about 5 minutes later a couple came after us and were never rushed or told this. So apart from the not so great customer service this place is typically wonderful and still worth checking out. Great food and great coffee.
A required stop on scenic Highway 1 in Davenport just a few miles outside Santa Cruz. Amazing bakery and restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Avoid the weekend crowds and tour buses. Take away, outdoor seating, and now indoor too. Enjoy a fresh baked pastry or hearty meal amongst the ocean breezes. Large portions and reasonable prices. Limited free parking.
